Tips to Dealing with Chronic Inflammation

June 30, 2025 by Quinn A in senior living

The Harvard Medical School writes many people suffering from fatigue, joint pain, and digestive issues may have chronic inflammation that is affecting their health and not know it. For some, chronic inflammation plays a central role in a number of the most challenging diseases of our time. These include conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, asthma and even Alzheimer’s disease.

So, what is inflammation and when is it considered chronic? The Cleveland Clinic explains, “Inflammation is a normal part of your body’s response to injuries and invaders (like germs). It promotes healing and helps you feel better. But inflammation that happens when there’s no injury or invader can harm healthy parts of your body and cause a range of chronic diseases.”

Chronic inflammation can be the result of a variety of factors such as persistent infections, autoimmune disorders, environmental exposures, and lifestyle factors like poor diet and lack of physical activity. In some cases, it may be the result of unresolved acute inflammation, or a direct consequence of conditions like obesity or certain diseases. It may also start as the body’s natural response to an infection or injury but doesn’t shut off as it should, but rather provokes the inflammatory response again and again.

Chronic inflammation generally is not as obvious as acute inflammation. Along with fatigue and low energy, symptoms of chronic inflammation may include depression; constipation, diarrhea, and other gastrointestinal complaints; changes in weight or appetite, headaches and brain fog. To help with symptoms, it is important to get a good night’s sleep, manage stress, maintain a healthy weight and diet, and stay physically active.

When medical intervention is necessary, experts say medications to treat the symptoms of chronic inflammation include aspirin, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug; as well as newer, more advanced targeted treatments. Talk to your healthcare provider if you have concerns.

Is it Time to Start Talking About Assisted Living?

June 27, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

When is the right time to start talking to your parents or loved one about assisted living? Sometimes, the day comes sooner than we anticipated. You don’t have to worry about this conversation. If you are worried about your parents’ or loved one’s safety, it may be time to look into living options. Here are some signs that it is time to start considering and talking about assisted living :

Common Signs that Your Loved One is Struggling

If your loved one has been behaving differently, or you are worried about their wellbeing when you’re alone, it’s important to take note of any of the following things that may hint at the need for care options.

  1. Can’t Keep up with Regular House Maintenance

We all fall behind on our chores from time to time. But if you are noticing that trash is piling up, expired food is in the fridge, the pets aren’t being cared for, or bills are going unpaid, it may be time to intervene. Being unable to keep up with the home is a common sign of overwhelm and even cognitive decline. If these are things you are noticing, start looking into trusted options near you.

  2. Behavior and Personality Changes

Seniors will tend to experience minimal personality changes as they age. They might not be interested in the same things as before, or maybe they’re a little more antsy or frustrated than usual. Slight changes in behavior are fine, but if you begin to see major changes in your loved one’s personality, there could be something else going on. Cognitive decline usually presents itself as forgetfulness, anger, unpredictable moods, and changes in sleep habits.

  3. Poor Hygiene and Self-Care

Is your loved one forgetting to change their clothes? Maybe they are having a hard time remembering to brush their teeth or shower on their own? If a senior is struggling to properly care for themselves without your help or reminder, this is another sign that it may be time to consider, so that they can have the support they need.

Healthy Choices for Snacking

June 27, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Many of us experience a mid-morning or late afternoon slump in terms of energy and need a little bite of something to give us a lift. While experts say snacking can be a good thing, it is important to do it with healthy options. They emphasize the best snacks are low-sugar and nutrient-rich; and provide energy as well as support overall health. Snacks rich in fiber and protein help keep us feeling full. Foods to avoid are ultra-processed and high in calories, fat, sodium and added sugar.

Some examples of healthy snacks: smoothies. They can be made with fresh greens, your choice of milk and fruit. Along the same line is a cup of low-fat yogurt topped with fresh or frozen, thawed berries. If you don’t like yogurt, a cup of cottage cheese with fruit is a good alternative.

Kale is one of the healthiest leafy, green vegetables; and kale chips are a fun way to enjoy it. Moreover, they are very easy to make on your own. Prep carrots, celery and other raw veggies in advance to dip into humus or low-fat yogurt dip. Other quick and easy snacks include steamed edamame, unsalted pepitas, nuts and fresh fruits.

The popular superfood, chia seeds, are loaded with protein and fiber, and support heart and brain health. One tasty way to eat them is as a chia pudding, which is another very simple thing to make. Other quick snack ideas include peanut butter and apple slices or guacamole spread on whole wheat toast.

Whatever snack you decide, make it something you enjoy. Registered dietitian at the Cleveland Clinic Department of Wellness & Preventive Medicine, Kristin Kirkpatrick, M.S., R.D., L.D., says regardless of how good it is for you, if you don’t like it, you probably won’t eat it. She explains that “studies show that when you take this important factor into your dietary pattern, you are more likely to stick with it. For example, if you don’t like kale, don’t include it—instead, find another green or cruciferous veggie that you love.”

At the MorningStar of Littleton senior living community, we proudly serve meals prepared under the guidance of our Executive Chef, who knows how to make every meal a special occasion. Each meal incorporates fresh ingredients to create flavor profiles that stimulate the senses and boost energy. Our 65 assisted living suites are available in studio and one-and-two-bedroom floorplans. For seniors with dementia-related diseases, our Reflections Neighborhood provides all-inclusive Alzheimer’s care with 20 suites. Assisted Living Helps Your Parents Stay Independent

June 25, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Seniors fear losing their independence, and understandably so. Elderly adults have lived long, beautiful lives, full of years of self-sufficiency and personal autonomy. For many seniors, the idea of a senior living community can feel overwhelming. This is especially true if they have lived on their own for a long time.

While moving into assisted living can be an adjustment, there are many positives to this type of senior living community. Encouraging autonomy is one of the major ones. MorningStar Senior Living promotes independence and autonomy within their community in the following ways:

Maintaining Routines and Schedules

It’s important to maintain a senior’s personal routine and schedule as much as possible when they are adjusting to a new facility. Like any person, seniors experience more autonomy when they have a choice over what they do with their day. Flexible and accessible assisted living communities give seniors the freedom to fill their day with whatever feels best to them. With support, seniors can explore the community, meet new people, join clubs, attend free group activities, and even go to the salon and on-site cafe. Having easily accessible features and amenities allows seniors to keep up with their usual schedules without needing to leave the community.

Empathetic and Skilled Staff

Assisted living communities don’t hire “babysitters.” Trusted staff their neighborhoods with empathetic and skilled staff that possess the tools to properly care for the people that live there. These elder-care professionals know how to navigate the changing needs of seniors and how to handle emotional challenges or emergencies should they arise. Skilled staff also have the knowledge to know how to best care for and support each senior. No resident is exactly alike, and each one requires a different level of care. The staff at MorningStar know that respecting these boundaries and supplying the right support is the greatest way to embrace independence in seniors.

Impact of Aging on Learning and Memory

June 23, 2025 by Quinn A in retirement homes

Many of us find ourselves wondering if our brain is working as efficiently as it did when we were younger. Research shows most likely it is not. Various studies suggest memory problems often “reflect a slower processing speed and poor encoding and retrieval of new memories as a result of diminished attention.” However, while normal aging causes seniors to process new information slower; judgement and reasoning powers remain largely intact.

Researchers say in the same way we cannot jump as high or run as fast as we did when we were children; our thinking process also begins to slow down. By the time we are in our 50s or 60s, this can interfere with remembering things, solving problems or learning new information. Structural changes in the brain regions involved in memory processing such as the hippocampus and the frontal lobes all experience anatomical and neurochemical changes as we age. Concentration can be affected by the natural loss of receptors and neurons. Outside factors such as not getting enough sleep or a hearing loss can exacerbate the problem, and daily aches and pains can impact our ability to concentrate as do the medications we take to ease the pain.

If an older person does not make a point to really concentrate when taking in new information, it can cause problems with recall as they never really learned it in the first place. Experts offer practical, commonsense tips to help you more reliably process information and improve your ability to focus. Examples include playing brain games, physical exercise (it helps send more blood flow to the brain), getting out in nature, listening to music, sleeping at least seven to eight hours a night or using relaxation techniques such as meditation or mindfulness.

Heart Disease Patients Benefit From an Involved Caregiver

June 18, 2025 by Quinn A in senior apartments

According to AARP there are things family members can do to help a loved one live their best life with coronary heart disease. They quote Vinoy Prasad, M.D., director of interventional cardiology and cardiac rehabilitation at Loma Linda University International Heart Institute in California, who explains after a crisis like a heart attack, “People who have a lot of support from their family actually recover better, they recover faster, and they do better long term.”

Coronary artery diseases include atherosclerosis, which doctors say is a buildup of plaque in the arteries and is the most common cause of heart disease. Plaque builds up in the arteries over years, and as the condition progresses, it can result in a complete blockage and produce a blood clot. High cholesterol, smoking, obesity, diabetes and a family history are linked to the disease. Other less common causes of coronary disease include non-obstructive coronary artery disease that damages artery linings and restricts blood flow without plaque buildup.

Statistics show on-going care for heart patients is more likely to be successful when the patient has an involved caregiver. Lisa Kitko, the co-author of a 2022 Heart Association scientific statement, explains that heart patients with involved caregivers tend to take their medications properly, follow medical instructions and get to appointments.

Kitko says like most things, another set of ears is better than one, so accompanying a patient to their appointments makes it easier to follow instructions as you are both on the same page. Family members are also helpful in providing transport to appointments and to programs such as cardiac rehab and support groups.

At MorningStar of Wheat Ridge, we offer the amenities and services to help seniors maintain their best quality of life. Our retirement communities provide living with a choice of well-designed suites, and a whole range of activities and programs along with tasty, nutritional meals. For those living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, our distinct Reflections Neighborhood provides holistic memory care that celebrates and elevates life. Contact us to schedule a personalized tour to see firsthand the finest senior apartments in the area.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. Diagnosing Alzheimer’s Disease

June 16, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

While there is not one single test used to definitively diagnose Alzheimer’s disease, doctors typically use a variety of tools to make a diagnosis. Along with the person’s primary care provider, specialists like neurologists, neuropsychologists, geriatricians and geriatric psychiatrists may all be involved in determining if the patient’s problems are Alzheimer’s or caused by other reasons.

The process starts with a medical workup done by a health care provider that includes the person’s history of medical problems as well as any history of psychiatric, cognitive or behavioral problems. It is important to tell the doctor about all current medications including over-the-counter-drugs and supplements the person is taking. Your doctor will also want to know if there is a family history of Alzheimer’s or other cognitive problems.

A physical exam should include a check of reflexes, blood pressure levels and questions regarding sleep patterns, diet, exercise and other lifestyle habits. A structural brain imaging scan such an MRI or computed tomography is used to rule out damage to the brain from stroke, tumors, head trauma or a build-up of fluid. Blood and urine tests can rule out other reasons for symptoms. The Alzheimer’s Association says common causes of dementia-like symptoms include depression, untreated sleep apnea, delirium, side effects of medications, thyroid problems, certain vitamin deficiencies and excessive alcohol consumption.

The doctor may also use one of several cognitive, functional tests to evaluate the person’s memory, thinking and simple problem-solving skills. Professionals state, “There is an urgent need for a simple, inexpensive, non-invasive and easily available diagnostic tool such as blood tests to diagnose the disease.” Currently researchers are experimenting with a variety of tests to enable them to track changes more easily in the brain to identify the disease. Health professionals do not recommend routine genetic testing for Alzheimer’s disease at this time.

Along with assisted living, Colorado Springs’ MorningStar at Mountain Shadows offers individualized, specialized care in our Reflections Neighborhood for those at the onset of Alzheimer’s disease through to the most advanced stages.  Beginning with compassionate caregivers to activities, programs and meal services tailored to our residents’ special needs, we bring a deep understanding of the disease to our care.  Please contact us or visit our website for more information about trusted senior living communities at MorningStar.

A Good Diet Promotes Healthy Aging

June 13, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

The National Institute on Aging (NIA) explains diet plays a large role in the aging process. To optimize our own health, they recommend we start by understanding the different food groups (published by the USDA); and how each one helps form healthy eating patterns for a particular age group.

Experts say diet is one aspect of healthy aging and is especially important for seniors who are at greater risk for cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes as well as conditions related to loss of bone and muscle mass such as osteoporosis and sarcopenia. Other aspects of healthy aging include maintaining a healthy weight, exercising, and getting a good night’s sleep.

One of the best food groups that encourage healthy aging is vegetables, which are rich in vitamins and minerals, and carbohydrates. These include dark green vegetables, red and orange vegetables, and starchy vegetables; as well as legumes (beans and peas) that are also found in the protein food group.

The NIA reports fruits are another critical food group and are not consumed often enough by older adults. Fruits contain carbohydrates along with extra fiber that helps keep the digestive system moving. Recommendations include eating fruits with the skin on but be sure to wash them thoroughly before eating. If you choose to eat fruit in a can, dried or from frozen, choose options lowest in sugar.

Fiber, a type of carbohydrate the body doesn’t digest, is another healthy food group. It can be found in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and beans. Fiber-rich foods can help prevent stomach or intestinal problems and lower cholesterol.

At least half of our daily intake of grains should be consumed in products made with whole grains. These provide iron and many B vitamins. Examples include whole wheat bread, whole oats, whole bulgur (also known as cracked wheat), and whole cornmeal.

For protein, it is recommended we choose low-fat meats, poultry, seafood, eggs, beans, nuts, seeds, and soy products. Dairy products help maintain strong bones and provide several vital nutrients including calcium, potassium, and vitamin D. Again, the best choices are low-fat options. Experts say also use oils instead of solid fats, such as butter or lard that are high in saturated fat whenever possible.

MorningStar at Mountain Shadows in Colorado Springs offers 45 stylish assisted living suites in a choice of studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floor plans. For seniors with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, our distinct Reflections Neighborhood offers 19 suites devoted to the individualized, specialized care of our most tender residents. Helping Mom or Dad Transition to an Assisted Living Community

June 11, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Moving can be exhausting and many of us have mixed feelings about the change – both looking forward to a new adventure and sad to leave our old life behind. Now imagine what your parents may be feeling as they leave a familiar home for an assisted living community. The change can be even more difficult if they are going into memory care.

Experts say there are things family members can do to help ease the transition and make it a more positive experience. First, involve your loved one into the decision-making process as much as possible. Discuss the various benefits of each community regarding suites, amenities, food service and the helpfulness of the staff and administrators. Also, read online reviews from other families and residents; and take advantage of in-person tours.

Once the decision is made on a particular community, now help mom or dad decide on what to bring to their new space, keeping in mind it is probably smaller than their current home. Consider an item based on its practicality, footprint, and your loved one’s feelings toward it. Be sure to include personal mementos such as family pictures and a few of their most cherished treasures he/she has collected through the years. Other furniture and items can be given to family members, sold or donated to charity.

Experts advise adult children to play an active role in helping a loved one settle into their new home and to remember it is an emotional adjustment. In-person visits help as do phone calls to let them know you are still thinking of them.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, we are experienced in helping residents make a smooth transition to our community by working alongside our residents and their families to listen to concerns and help solve any problems. MorningStar’s assisted living residents enjoy stylish suites, all-day dining, wellness programs, activities and amenities including a theatre, fitness center, salon, fireside patio and scheduled transportation.  For those living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, we offer a distinct area staffed by a compassionate team of trained caregivers.

Please contact us for more information about our beautiful home in Colorado Springs.  Not only are we happy to answer any questions you may have but our website provides information on our company’s history, vision, and mission as well as what sets us apart from other senior living communities.

Engage Your Mind With Enjoyable Activities

June 09, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living Facility

As we age, many of us find ourselves more absent-minded and forgetful than we were in our younger years. Seeing someone unexpectedly from our past can result in recognizing the face but being unable to bring a name to mind. Experts say some lapses in memory are common as we age but encourage seniors to do cognitive activities to help stay sharp.

Brain games exercise your memory, attention, brain speed, people skills, intelligence and navigation just like a trip to the gym gives you a cardio workout and exercises your abs and quads. One good resource for such games is the AARP online site. It offers a variety of fun and entertaining games and puzzles such as daily crosswords, word games like scrabble, Sudoku and trivia as well as the opportunity to join a bridge, chess or backgammon game.

The New York Times offers the daily World puzzle that gives your brain a quick workout along with several other word puzzles for Times’ subscription holders. Other programs offering brain games targeted at older adults can be accessed online for a monthly or yearly fee. In addition to the Internet, if you have an iPad or tablet, you can find challenging brain game apps.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, our vibrant community offers seniors a healthy and engaged lifestyle. Residents are treated to best-in-class meals, luxury amenities and a wide array of wellness programs and activities providing companionship with like-minded adults of a similar age. A look at our monthly calendar shows activities such as word and card games, table puzzles and Rummikub to keep the brain sharp while having fun.

Activities not only offer opportunities for challenging your cognitive skills but meeting and socializing with friends while enjoying a good laugh together. Contact us to learn more about MorningStar’s assisted living in Colorado Springs.

Alzheimer’s Disease Can Cause Behavior and Personality Changes

June 06, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

We know a person changes in several ways when living with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia. Memory problems and confusion are some of the most commonly known symptoms, but there are other behaviors just as common that can be unsettling and disruptive. The Medical News Today reports on the various behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia known as BPSDs.

Research suggests as many as 97% of people with dementia have one or more of the following symptoms: agitation; anxiety, psychosis, depression, apathy, irritability and/or physical or verbal aggression. Agitation may include behaviors such as pacing, wandering, restlessness and fidgeting. Repetitive movements and sleep disturbances are also common. Understanding these changes and learning strategies to deal with them can result in better care for the patient and make it easier for caregivers to cope.

Doctors are not sure why dementia patients suffer from psychosis but suggest it could be due to interruptions and changes to neurotransmitters such as dopamine, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), and serotonin. Along with these interferences to brain waves, many dementia patients also suffer from poor memory and impaired visuospatial abilities, which can confuse the person as to what is real and what isn’t.

Sleep disturbances can come in the form of hypersomnia with symptoms of reversed sleep-wake patterns and fragmented sleep. Another problem can be rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder. To help combat sleep disturbances, experts recommend limiting naps during the daytime and exposing the person to daylight (especially morning light) and getting physical exercise.

If you are a family caregiver, it is important to reach out and get help. The Alzheimer’s Association is a good resource for both information and support as is the person’s healthcare team.

Do You Need Blue Light Blocking Glasses?

June 04, 2025 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Blue light is a high-energy wavelength of visible light, which can be emitted from our digital screens that we all seem to be using more and more often. To “protect” us from this light, there are a plethora of blue light protected glasses everywhere. In addition, we are hearing how much we need them now more than ever. So the question is do they actually work and is the extra expense worth it?

Since 2008, researchers have been studying blue-blocking or filtering products that are trying to decrease the transmission of ultraviolet light with wavelengths between 440 and 500 nanometers. Some digital devices recently offer blue light-filtering settings to reduce the transmission of short wavelengths of light.

However, it may not surprise you to hear there is some debate on whether we are adversely affected by blue light, and to what degree blue light glasses can help the problem. The Mayo Clinic explains, while blue light occurs in daylight, the waves omitting from our devices at night could be detrimental to a good night’s sleep as they may shift our circadian rhythm, the body’s internal clock. However, they also say studies do not show an improvement in eye strain or better sleep quality by using blue-blocking glasses. The American Academy of Ophthalmology agrees and doesn’t recommend special eyewear for computer users.

Instead experts offer some suggestions to help diminish eyestrain and improve sleep such as monitoring the length of your screen time and taking frequent breaks. They say try the 20-20-20 rule of looking at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes. In addition, an updated eye exam could detect problems with your eyes and whether prescription glasses might help eyestrain.

Ways to Express Gratitude Everyday

June 02, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

While studies find feeling grateful can make us happier and less anxious; like every skill, it does take some practice. An article at CNN.com explains gratitude should not be saved for special occasions, but like love, should be practiced or expressed regularly. With a little effort, you should be able to find something to be grateful for every day.

Experts share four ways to help you practice gratitude. The first is to create a gratitude album on your phone by taking a picture each day of things that bring you joy like a meaningful text, beautiful scenery, fun events on your calendar and pics of loved ones. Don’t worry about your photography skill. Now instead of scrolling through social media, use some of that time to look through your own gratitude album and appreciate the good things in your life.

Another gratitude practice is to take the time to breathe. Mindful breathing techniques can help relieve tension and reduce stress, and only take a few minutes. When doing, remember to be thankful for your breathing, which is a life-sustaining force. Combine breathing with feelings of gratitude and patience as you strive to feel relaxed and calm. The Internet offers several methods for practicing breathing techniques.

Expressing gratitude to someone each day by thanking them for their support and/or love are other ways to feel gratitude. Studies show it helps to build a better relationship between two people who routinely express or receive gratitude from their partner.

Lastly experts say end your day by feeling grateful. One practice is to think of three things you are grateful for and write them down in a notebook or piece of paper. They do not have to be big “things” but just something that makes you feel happy. When you wake in the morning, read over your three things and take a few moments to reflect on them.

Women Can Protect Their Health With Recommended Screenings

May 30, 2025 by Quinn A in retirement communities

Medical professionals stress the importance of women getting the proper screenings to protect their health and discover problems early when they may be more treatable. Screenings are designed for otherwise healthy individuals and recommendations change as we age.

An article in the publication US News & World Report, states, “Your doctor can help you tailor the recommendations based on your goals of care, personal and family health history, age and life expectancy.”  This post discusses 4 of the 14 screenings in the article.

Breast cancer screening with a mammogram is recommended annually for women from age 40-50, every two years for those 50 to 74 and on a case-by-case basis after that.  Doctors say mammograms are key to the prevention as well as early detection of breast cancer, when it is most easily treated. Talk to your doctor about testing options if you are under the age of 40 and have a mother or sister who had breast cancer at a young age or have a high-risk genetic marker.

It is recommended women 50 years and older have a colonoscopy every ten years. As colon cancer is more common in African Americans and occurs at an earlier age, it is advised to start testing at age 45. Younger women/teens with a family history of adenomatous polyposis – a genetic condition that starts in someone as young as in the teen years may need colonoscopies at a much earlier age. Also, a woman with a history of Crohn’s disease or inflammatory bowel disease will likely be advised to have a colonoscopy at a younger age than 50. There are also other screening tests for colon cancer which may be right for you.

Diabetes is another disease a woman 45 years and older should be screened for every three years. Exceptions for screening earlier are a family history of diabetes; obesity and high blood pressure readings or you take medications for HBP.

A Lipid profile assessment testing a woman’s cholesterol and triglyceride levels as well as the risk for heart disease should be done every five years starting at age 45, or younger for those at high risk. If lifestyle changes do not reduce your numbers, you may need medications. As with all screenings, discuss with your doctor how often you need to be screened and what steps to take to improve your health.

How to Stay Safe this Summer for Seniors

May 30, 2025 by Quinn A in senior living

Rising temperatures in the summer can cause a lot of worry. While high temps and sun exposure can be dangerous for everyone, MorningStar Assisted Living reminds us how important it is to not forget senior safety during the summer months.

Seniors are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heatstroke. With the summer quickly approaching, it’s important to be observant of the symptoms and warning signs of heat related illnesses and how you can best help seniors stay safe this summer.

Heat Risks for Seniors

While we can all be affected by the sun’s harsh rays, seniors have an increasingly more difficult time navigating the summer. Spending too much time in the heat can be a serious concern and should be taken seriously by caregivers. Due to aging, seniors have reduced sweat production and may struggle with underlying conditions that make it hard for their bodies to self regulate. Some common symptoms of heat-related illnesses include dizziness, confusion, rapid heart rate, nausea, headaches, red skin, and even fainting.

Staying Cool

It’s hard to not enjoy the summer. Even seniors want to have fun in the sun! If you plan on being outside with a senior loved one this year, there are some important tips on staying cool. Be mindful of what time you go outdoors, with highest temps often being in the early afternoon. If you must be outside at this time, pack plenty of water, and dress in loose, breathable clothing. Seniors usually like to bring a hat and sunglasses. Minimize full sun exposure when possible by taking breaks in shaded areas or going into air conditioned places. While it might not keep you cool, sunscreen is crucial for seniors to protect their skin.

Selecting an Assisted Living Community

May 28, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

For anyone considering a move to assisted living, choosing the right community is a big decision for families as getting it wrong may mean another move within a couple of months. To help, senior living experts say the first thing to do is to think about the level of care you or a loved one needs to improve quality of life.

After you have a good idea of what your needs are, now factor in things like location and affordability. If you want the home to be a convenient drive for easy visiting, concentrate on those communities. If mom or dad no longer drives, look for a community offering transportation for doctor appointments or errands; or if they plan to bring a car, does it offer parking? Does the home offer 24/7 care, medication management and access to licensed nurses?

Obviously, affordability is an important consideration, but senior living advocates warn don’t be initially shocked at the price. Rather think about all the living costs such as property taxes, maintenance, utility bills and meals included in the home’s monthly fees. For a better understanding of mom or dad’s assets, it may be worth your while to consult an expert in elder financial consulting. They can explore various options such as eligibility for Veterans’ benefits, what your parent’s long-term care insurance may cover, and the advantages of leveraging real estate assets and life insurance, tax benefits and more.

Other things to think about include the physical characteristics of the community. Does it offer a floor plan that works for you? Do you want amenities such as a fitness center, hair salon, outdoor patio, restaurant-style dining, theater, Wi-Fi, etc.?

If you are considering assisted living in the Denver area, we encourage you to learn more MorningStar of Wheat Ridge. Our assisted living lets seniors comfortably and safely age in place with a range of hospitality and care services, resort-style amenities and a complement of wellness programs and activities. In addition, we offer specialized care for residents with Alzheimer’s disease and other memory impairments. Please visit our website to inquire about pricing and availability.

How to Talk with Your Parents About Assisted Living Options

May 28, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

In your heart, you know it’s time. You have watched your parents struggle and have worried about what may happen if you’re not around. Even knowing this, talking to your parents about assisted living options is a scary task. You know senior living might be the best choice for them, but you worry about how they might react. How can you explain to your parents that is a great option that can improve their overall health and well-being? Below is some advice that can help you talk with your parents about assisted living options.

Know What Assisted Living has to Offer

If you believe it is time for your parents to move to assisted living, we suggest taking some time to research some great options in your area and become familiar with what they have to offer. Reflect on the things your parents need. Make a list if they require help with everyday tasks, if they require medication management, flexible care, or what level of supervision they require. Make sure the communities you are interested in can meet their needs and then some!

Use Compassionate Communication Techniques

Many seniors are uncomfortable with change, especially when it is unfamiliar. Remember that your parents just want to be comfortable and understood. When preparing to talk to your parents about assisted living, practice active listening and allow your parents to share their thoughts about their current living situation and what they think about other senior living options. Highlight the positives of senior living communities and ask if they would be open to exploring them. No decisions need to be made right away. It’s important for your parents to be involved in the decision making process.
