Thoughtful Gifts for a Loved One With Dementia

July 23, 2025 by Quinn A in retirement homes

We all like to bring our elderly parents or loved ones a gift to show them just how much we care about them. It is often hard to know what to give to a senior, and especially difficult if a loved one is living with dementia.  Experts suggest you help them find ways to reminisce about their lives and accomplishments, and give them things that will bring a smile to their face and some joy into their life.

Many ideas for someone with Alzheimer’s or another dementia disease include personalized gifts.  One such gift is a talking photo book that allows you to record your own personal commentary to go along with each photograph.  This can be a fun book to sit and enjoy with your family member as it helps to trigger memories and conversation.  Many companies offer such books, and prices typically vary with the number of photos and recording time available.

Buying an interactive book featuring vivid photographs and large print on a subject your mom or dad love such as animals or flowers can also promote conversation and provide a way to spend relaxing time together.  To ease stress or agitation, you may want to consider getting them a fiddle muff.  A fiddle muff can provide comfort and warmth as well as activity to promote increased hand flexibility and brain stimulation.

Another meaningful gift is a cozy, customized blanket filled with photos of the grandkids or a beloved family pet.  On the Internet you can find companies that will do a collage of family photos or a singular one in a variety of materials.  Many of the blankets have surprisingly sharp images and can be machine washed and dried.

If the person has a hard time falling asleep or relaxing, calming visual and or audio stimulation may help.  Several companies have all-in-one cubes that offer a range of calming music and visual displays that can turn the ceiling into a beautiful night sky.

Along with retirement homes, MorningStar of Wheat Ridge offers specialized memory care to those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. Our Reflections Neighborhood is meticulously designed to accommodate the special needs of residents, allowing them as much independence as possible.  Each resident receives an individualized care plan and participates in a wide variety of wellness programs and purposeful activities including exercise, music, life skills, art, special celebrations and other events. Seniors and Night Driving

July 21, 2025 by Quinn A in retirement homes

Many older adults complain about being unable to see clearly while driving at night. Experts explain that night blindness, also known as nyctalopia, makes it difficult to see well in dim or dark settings as the person’s eyes are unable to adjust to changes in brightness or to detect lights. Driving at night with this condition is not only a problem but is dangerous, and it is more common in seniors.

The condition is caused when the iris, the colored part of the eye, and the retina aren’t working well together. The iris has muscles that widen or narrow the opening of the pupil to adjust how much light enters the eyes. The retina has light-detecting cones and rods, which manage vision in dim light. When the irises’ muscles don’t react well; pupils can dilate and let in too much light or remain too small and make it hard to see in dim light.

A number of things can exacerbate night blindness including something we cannot control – old age. Dr. Isabel Deakins, an optometrist with Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts Eye and Ear, explains as we age, “”The number of rods in our eyes diminishes, pupils get smaller, and the muscles of the irises weaken.”

Other conditions that can cause night blindness include glaucoma, cataracts, dry eye syndrome and certain medications. There are treatments for glaucoma, cataracts and dry eyes. For other people, a stronger pair of glasses or ones that reduce glare may help.

Other strategies to improve night vision are to routinely clean the windshield, side mirrors and headlights. If you wear glasses, make sure they are clean. Be sure to dim the interior dashboard lights for night driving and use the night setting for the rear view mirror. If you are having trouble seeing in dim or dark settings, you need to stop driving and make an appointment with an optometrist or ophthalmologist.

Impact of Aging on Learning and Memory

June 23, 2025 by Quinn A in retirement homes

Many of us find ourselves wondering if our brain is working as efficiently as it did when we were younger. Research shows most likely it is not. Various studies suggest memory problems often “reflect a slower processing speed and poor encoding and retrieval of new memories as a result of diminished attention.” However, while normal aging causes seniors to process new information slower; judgement and reasoning powers remain largely intact.

Researchers say in the same way we cannot jump as high or run as fast as we did when we were children; our thinking process also begins to slow down. By the time we are in our 50s or 60s, this can interfere with remembering things, solving problems or learning new information. Structural changes in the brain regions involved in memory processing such as the hippocampus and the frontal lobes all experience anatomical and neurochemical changes as we age. Concentration can be affected by the natural loss of receptors and neurons. Outside factors such as not getting enough sleep or a hearing loss can exacerbate the problem, and daily aches and pains can impact our ability to concentrate as do the medications we take to ease the pain.

If an older person does not make a point to really concentrate when taking in new information, it can cause problems with recall as they never really learned it in the first place. Experts offer practical, commonsense tips to help you more reliably process information and improve your ability to focus. Examples include playing brain games, physical exercise (it helps send more blood flow to the brain), getting out in nature, listening to music, sleeping at least seven to eight hours a night or using relaxation techniques such as meditation or mindfulness.

At MorningStar retirement homes of Wheat Ridge, our beautiful home is designed to provide residents with a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community. Heart Disease Patients Benefit From an Involved Caregiver

June 18, 2025 by Quinn A in senior apartments

According to AARP there are things family members can do to help a loved one live their best life with coronary heart disease. They quote Vinoy Prasad, M.D., director of interventional cardiology and cardiac rehabilitation at Loma Linda University International Heart Institute in California, who explains after a crisis like a heart attack, “People who have a lot of support from their family actually recover better, they recover faster, and they do better long term.”

Coronary artery diseases include atherosclerosis, which doctors say is a buildup of plaque in the arteries and is the most common cause of heart disease. Plaque builds up in the arteries over years, and as the condition progresses, it can result in a complete blockage and produce a blood clot. High cholesterol, smoking, obesity, diabetes and a family history are linked to the disease. Other less common causes of coronary disease include non-obstructive coronary artery disease that damages artery linings and restricts blood flow without plaque buildup.

Statistics show on-going care for heart patients is more likely to be successful when the patient has an involved caregiver. Lisa Kitko, the co-author of a 2022 Heart Association scientific statement, explains that heart patients with involved caregivers tend to take their medications properly, follow medical instructions and get to appointments.

Kitko says like most things, another set of ears is better than one, so accompanying a patient to their appointments makes it easier to follow instructions as you are both on the same page. Family members are also helpful in providing transport to appointments and to programs such as cardiac rehab and support groups.

At MorningStar of Wheat Ridge, we offer the amenities and services to help seniors maintain their best quality of life. Our retirement communities provide living with a choice of well-designed suites, and a whole range of activities and programs along with tasty, nutritional meals. For those living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, our distinct Reflections Neighborhood provides holistic memory care that celebrates and elevates life. Both the Amount and Quality of Sleep Are Important for Overall Health

April 23, 2025 by Quinn A in retirement homes

The American Heart Association offers a checklist of eight key measures for improving and maintaining cardiovascular health. Life’s Essential 8 is designed to highlight things we can do to lower our risk for heart disease, stroke and other major health problems.

In 2022, the Association added sleep duration to the list as a component of heart health. They say the amount and quality of sleep can influence a person’s eating habits, mood, memory, internal organs and more.

One advantage to getting enough sleep is being more productive. After spending years working long hours to the detriment of a good night’s sleep, Ariana Huffington now says, “The irony is that a lot of people forgo sleep in the name of productivity. But in fact our productivity is reduced substantially when we’re sleep deprived.”

Professor of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Charles Czeisler, explains being sleep deprived can impair your abilities and is like being drunk. Poor sleep habits can cause you to eat more to feel more energetic, and may increase your risk for high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

It is recommended adults get a solid 7 to 9 hours of sleep each day and a sleep routine will help you achieve this goal. Start by going to bed each night around the same time so you can wake up refreshed at the same time each morning. If possible, open your curtains to let in the morning sunshine or turn on the bedroom lights. Research still shows breakfast is the most important meal of the day and should consist of healthy foods.

Another thing to get your day off right is to take a few minutes each morning doing something like practicing mindfulness or yoga. The other Life’s Essential 8 include maintaining a healthy diet, fitness, quitting nicotine, losing weight, and watching your cholesterol, blood pressure and risk for diabetes.

At MorningStar of Wheat Ridge, our vibrant home is designed from the ground up to serve our residents’ every need. Our community offers stylish retirement homes suites in a variety of floor plans. Grandparents Are Celebrated in September

April 18, 2025 by Quinn A in retirement communities

While Mother’s Day and Father’s Day occur in May and June each year, grandparents have their special day in September.  To recognize the value of the relationship between grandchildren and grandparents, Grandparents Day is celebrated on the Sunday after Labor Day. In 2025 it will occur on Sunday, September 7th. While not a public holiday, President Jimmy Carter signed the proclamation in 1978 stating it should be observed each year.

For kids, having more people involved in their lives other than their parents is a good thing. Many grandparents’ unconditional love brings with it acceptance, patience and unwavering support as they readily recognize the child’s accomplishments and provide a safe, trusted harbor. Several studies validate the love and emotional closeness grandparents provide can make a positive impact on a child’s healthy development. Moreover, as grandparents may be retired, they have more leisure time to spend with the grandkids.

Research also shows that a close, involved relationship is good for grandparents too, and contributes to a healthier, happier and possibly even longer life. Grandparents’ relationship with grandkids can include the role of caregiver, teacher, playmate and cheering squad depending on where they live; and does not come with the responsibilities of being the parent. Grandparents can uniquely provide the child with a sense of their family history, heritage, and identity. They know great stories about the child’s parents and can help pass on family traditions and life stories.

If your child does not have any grandparents, consider adopting an elderly person who does not have grandchildren.  If you don’t know any senior citizens personally, call a senior community in your area and ask if they have activities where your child would be welcome. If you missed last year’s Grandparents Day, put it on the calendar and celebrate it with some of your favorite seniors this year.

MorningStar of Wheat Ridge is a top assisted living community in the Denver area with a mission statement to:

Health Disease and Women

March 19, 2025 by Quinn A in senior apartments

Despite a long-held belief that more men are affected by and even die from heart disease, the American Health Association says we now know that is only half the story. Recent studies show more women die from heart disease than from all forms of cancer. Perimenopause and post-menopausal women are at the most risk from heart disease, and the older they get, the higher the risk. Doctors say the drop in estrogen that occurs in women during and after menopause is why older women have a higher risk for cardiovascular disease.

Robin Noble, MD, a board-certified OB/GYN, explains before menopause, estrogen has a vasodilatory effect on the vascular system. This anti-inflammatory effect fights against the development of the type of inflammation that causes cardiovascular plaques. Once a woman’s body experiences a drop in estrogen, it creates problems such as higher cholesterol levels, higher blood pressure and an increase in visceral fat – all linked to plaque buildup and hardening of the arteries.

The Medical News Today’s experts weigh-in on what post-menopausal women can do to protect their health. The top recommendation involves adopting a healthy lifestyle such as increasing exercise, managing stress, maintaining a healthy weight and eating a more plant-based diet. Moderating your alcohol consumption and not smoking are also important.

If you are at risk for cardiovascular disease or already living with it, you need to work with your healthcare providers. In addition to adopting healthier lifestyle habits, one course of treatment is hormone-replacement therapy (HRT). It can be an effective way to reduce the risk of heart disease at this time of life.

At MorningStar of Wheat Ridge, we provide seniors carefree retirement years with trusted senior apartments and memory care. Our array of hospitality and senior care services ensure residents get the care they need to live their best life. Surprise an Elderly Loved One With an Unexpected Gift

January 29, 2025 by Quinn A in senior apartments

Do you have an elderly relative living alone or in a senior apartments too far to visit?  How about sending something special to show your thinking of them even if it’s not their birthday or a holiday.  One idea is to send them a gift basket filled with goodies to eat and drink, gifts to entertain, and items to make their lives a little easier or more pleasant.

For your coffee drinking parent or grandparent, a bag of gourmet coffee and a nice new mug is one way to start your basket, or add a collection of teas that include decaffeinated and herbal options.  Do they love chocolate or prefer salty snacks?  Adjust your selection to include high-end chocolates and other delightful treats or a nice selection of crackers and cheeses.  For a book lover, add a novel you think they would enjoy or a coffee table book on famous gardens, architecture, maps, photography or wherever matches their interest.

Now pack the basket with items such as jigsaw puzzles, crosswords, word-search books, a new coloring book and fresh colored pencils or markers.  If they have low vision, include large print playing cards and books.  If your loved one is feeling anxious or having a hard time sleeping, consider including a weighted blanket in the package.  While they come in many sizes, it is suggested you choose one that is 10% percent of their weight.   For example, if they weigh 150lbs, buy a 15lb blanket, and if they do not have a blanket that exactly matches 10% of their weight, you can go up a couple of pounds.

At MorningStar of Wheat Ridge, we offer a vibrant and carefree lifestyle for residents with a full range of care and hospitality services, luxury amenities, wellness programs and activities. Our senior apartments offer stylish suites for assisted living with a selection of floor plans.  In addition, our Reflections Neighborhood has suites devoted to the care of those suffering from memory impairment. Please contact us or visit our website for more information.

MorningStar has considered it a privilege and responsibility to “cast a new light” on senior living, inspired and empowered by our unique mission: to honor, to value, to invest. Respecting the Independence of Aging Parents

December 11, 2024 by Quinn A in senior apartments

We all understand the value of independence but as we grow older, many seniors are faced with physical and mental limitations that make them feel it may be threatened. Independence is one of the things seniors want to feel they still have control over; and is important as it is closely tied to self-worth and a sense of achievement.

Experts say well-intentional families can sometimes create bigger problems by becoming overprotective toward mom or dad. This can result in the senior becoming more fearful than the situation warrants, and erode their self-esteem and confidence. Another problem threatening a senior’s independence is when adult children talk to the parent as if they are a child. Even the most conscientious caregivers can sometimes baby the person too much or pressure them to do what they think is best.

Just as we do not want people telling us what to do or intruding into things we are not ready to share, you need to respect your parents’ privacy. When mom or dad’s wishes are respected, they will feel like they have more control of their lives. If a time comes when your parents need more help than they can get at home, it may be time to consider an assisted living community. Just be sure it is one where their independence will be nurtured.

What sets MorningStar of Wheat Ridge apart from other assisted living and memory care communities? We strive to provide a true home for our residents and have a team committed to serving seniors who treat them with the dignity and respect they deserve.  Our beautiful community is designed to meet all the needs of our residents with a range of luxury amenities, care services, wellness programs, and activities.  Please contact us for more information about exceptional senior apartments at MorningStar.
