Surprising Activities Seniors Love in Assisted Living

August 29, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

People often imagine retirement communities to be boring, dull, and low-energy. For MorningStar Assisted Living, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Today’s modern senior living communities embrace creativity, movement, technology, and passions of all kinds. Residents at MorningStar Assisted Living stay engaged and excited for each day thanks to our great programs team, who make it their daily mission to bring a smile to everyone they see.

Hobbies that Spark Joy

At MorningStar Assisted Living communities, we pride ourselves on building programs and activities around each resident’s unique interests or passions. Painting, culinary classes, movie nights, chess competitions, and gardening are just some of the few popular options within our community. These activities engage our residents’ minds and produce beautiful results at the same time. Seniors appreciate having the space and time to dedicate to the things that bring them joy and accomplishment.

Musical Expression

For seniors who are looking for a new hobby, karaoke or other musical performances may be just what they’re looking for. Music has the incredible power to lift spirits and freshen memories. Introducing karaoke into senior living is a great opportunity to unite residents in a fun and impactful way. Karaoke provides joy, laughter, and community long into the evening. Getting involved in instruments is another beneficial hobby. Seniors can make up for a lot of lost time before retirement. Now could finally be the chance to learn guitar or piano like they said they always wanted.

Engagement Matters

Regardless of the activity, what these hobbies have in common is the focus on choice, creativity, and connection. Our assisted living communities at MorningStar recognize how important hobbies are for self-expression and autonomy. Seniors thrive when they have the opportunities to explore, laugh, and create.

Questions to Ask when Looking for Assisted Living

August 29, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Like with most things in life, it is nice to have time to plan and review options before making a decision but sometimes things happen in a senior’s life where they need to make a quick decision regarding lifestyle changes. This may be due to a recent fall or a change to their medical or physical health.

As senior living communities offer different services and amenities, discuss beforehand what things are important to your parents or other loved ones for their comfort level, enjoyment and well-being. Remember to factor in location as it is vital to have a place easy for family and friends to visit. Other things to consider are wellness programs and activities (do they match up well with your parent’s interests), levels of care and caregiver training, and staff-to staff-resident ratio.

The internet comes in handy for previewing communities regarding their location, philosophies, services and price. However, before a decision is made as to where to move an elderly parent, it is important to take a tour to experience firsthand the overall ambience and suitability of the place. Afterall, the internet does not give you a clue about cleanliness and odors nor about the quality of their meal service. This is why if you can, schedule to eat a meal with the community to experience the food firsthand. You will also want details on how your parent’s care will be managed.

The Place for Mom, a senior living referral website, has advice for families about the importance of touring a community and the type of questions you should ask. They point out when you tour assisted living facilities, you get the opportunity to speak directly with staff members and, when appropriate, even residents. Asking focused questions about pricing, amenities, caregivers, the types of care provided, and community culture will help you and your loved one compare which is the best facility for their needs.

At the MorningStar of Littleton, we specialize in providing quality assisted living with personalized senior care and hospitality services and 5-star dining. Our smartly-designed studio and one- and two-bedroom floorplans are equipped with handicapped-accessible bathrooms, emergency call systems, and weekly housekeeping, laundry & linen services. For residents with memory impairments, our Reflections Neighborhood provides trusted Alzheimer’s care family can count on. How Seniors Can Get a Restful Night’s Sleep in Assisted Living

August 25, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Many families experience difficulty when it comes to getting seniors to have a full night of sleep. This issue can get even more complicated when medical or memory needs are involved. Reactions to medication can even cause sleep disturbances. Regardless of what a senior is struggling with, assisted living communities like MorningStar can offer seniors and their families some nighttime relief. At MorningStar, you can find a senior living community that prides itself on creating an environment that supports sleep and sleep health for seniors.

Creating a Comfortable and Safe Environment

A sound night of sleep begins with a sense of safety and comfort. MorningStar Assisted Living communities are thoughtfully designed to minimize noise, have calming light, and include quality safety measures throughout the building. Residents and their families find reassurance in knowing that caregivers are on-site and available 24/7 for any need or concern. If a senior is struggling with sleep, they are never alone and can find support easily and reliably.

Building a Sleep Routine that Works

Like medication management, assisted living communities can also support healthy sleep habits by creating a sleep routine. Seniors benefit from structured schedules, especially when they are struggling with sleep. Caregivers at MorningStar senior living work with medical providers, families, and the senior to create a routine that promotes overall healthy habits that should aid in better sleep. Having set meal times, engaging in activities, and practicing breathing techniques are some examples of how our team works to help regulate the body and mind.

Why Strength Training is Important for Seniors

August 25, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Research shows our bodies start losing muscle mass after the age of 35. The process quickens once females turn 65 years and males turn 70. However, the National Institute on Aging (NIA) says strength training cannot only help us maintain muscle mass and bone density longer but improve mobility and overall functional independence as well as reduce the risk of falls. It is a safe and effective way to ward off age-related decline and increase one’s healthy years.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity each week and at least two days of strength training. While you may think you don’t have time to go to a gym to workout, experts say many strength training exercises can be done at home using your own body weight, resistance bands and light weights. For adults dealing with obesity, better weight loss results can be achieved with a combination of strength training, aerobic exercises and dietary changes.

Before adding any new exercises to your daily regime, it is important to consult with your healthcare providers. Experts say always start slow and gradually build up to more repetitions. It is important to breathe as the exercise progresses as holding your breath can raise blood pressure. Keep movements slow and controlled, and rest between exercises. Many exercises can even be done in a chair.

Another tip for older adults is to add a daily routine of stretching as it can aid in healthy aging and enhance quality of life. Along with stretching exercises, experts recommend endurance exercises such as a brisk walk or dancing and balance exercises such as Tai Chi and yoga.

The MorningStar of Littleton senior living community offers comfort, security and well-being with a myriad of hospitality and senior care services, luxury amenities, and signature wellness programs and activities. For assisted living residents, we have 65 private, spacious suites available in studio and one-and-two-bedroom floorplans. High-Quality Nutrition Supports Overall Health

August 22, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

While losing weight is tough, for many of us, the real battle is keeping the weight off. Caroline Thomason, RD, CDCES, a dietitian and diabetes educator based in Washington, D.C., explains there is a growing body of evidence showing that when we focus on higher-quality nutrition, not only does our weight improve but also our health. Changing to a diet with more vegetables and fruits means you will take in fewer calories than you previously did, allowing weight loss to naturally take place. An improved diet results in better health.

One of the biggest problems with “dieting” is that a person too often focuses on calorie content without regard to nutritional value.” Experts say this makes sticking to a calorie restrictive diet harder. Once we include nutritional foods in our day-to-day diet, it makes us feel fuller and even lets us eat more while taking in fewer calories.

Another thing about a life-long nutritional diet filled with fruits and vegetables, plant-based proteins and whole foods is it promotes better health and quality of life as you age. Research shows people who eat better have a lower risk of many chronic diseases. Furthermore, dietitians say it is never too late to adopt healthier eating patterns. By simply changing diet, many people can lower high-blood pressure and cholesterol as well as reverse diabetes.

Doctors agree adopting good eating habits that are permanent is what counts rather than short-term diets. Along with diet; exercise, sleep and stress management are all important for better health.

MorningStar of Wheat Ridge is an outstanding retirement communities in Metro Denver. Our beautiful home offers assisted living residents a lifestyle of well-being, community and security. Along with nutritious daily meals tailored to the changing health needs of older adults, we have a broad range of onsite amenities, wellness programs and activities. In addition, our distinct Reflections Neighborhood provides all the services required to meet the needs of those with memory loss diseases. Please contact us or visit our website for more information.

Modifications in Lifestyle May Lower the Risk of Type 2 Diabetes

August 04, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes affects millions of Americans, and every year more than a million people are diagnosed with the disease. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) reports in 2021, 38.4 million Americans, or 11.6% of the population, had diabetes. Of that number 2 million had type 1 diabetes, which includes more than 300,000 children and adolescents.

Seniors aged 65 years and older make up a large percentage of Americans with the disease at 29.2% or 16.5 million seniors (diagnosed and undiagnosed). Diabetes can be deadly and was the 8th leading cause of death in 2021. People with diabetes are at an increased risk of vision problems, heart attacks, nerve damage and stroke. In 2022, the CDC estimated the cost of diabetes was $412.9 billion.

Prediabetes is another huge problem and numbers from 2021 report 97.6 million Americans aged 18 and older are affected. It is a chronic condition in which blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be classified as diabetes. While it carries an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, it isn’t inevitable. Studies show prediabetes can be reversed or the risk mitigated with lifestyle changes such as diet, medications, and early detection.

Yale Medicine endocrinologist, Anika Anam, MD, explains, “Prediabetes goes hand in hand with metabolic syndrome, the term for a condition that includes hypertension, obesity, and high cholesterol.” She adds each of those conditions raises the risk for serious issues including heart disease, stroke, and cancer.

The CDC’s national Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), finds “people with prediabetes who lost a modest amount of weight—5 to 7% (10 to 14 pounds for a person weighing 200 pounds, for example)—with the help of a structured lifestyle-change program cut their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58%.” In addition, experts say at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise per day can not only improve insulin sensitivity and lower blood sugar levels, but aid in weight loss. Cutting out added sugars, eating more complex carbs (vegetables, legumes, nuts, and whole grains), and increasing protein are other recommended lifestyle changes as is reducing stress.

Things Not to Stow in a Hot Car

July 30, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

As summer temperatures heat up, there are some things you should not keep stored in your vehicle.  One of those items is sunscreen. While it is handy to have it available to reapply when needed, experts say too much exposure to heat can start to degrade the effectiveness of the SPF protection in the product. The best way to get around this is to apply sunscreen at home, and if you need to have it on hand, carry it in your handbag that will go with you once you get out of the car.

Another thing many of us want to have with us in the hot weather is water. Many people have gotten into the habit of storing plastic water bottles in the car to have on hand but again experts say not a good idea. When exposed to heat, plastic bottles containing BPA can leach chemicals that are harmful to our health. In addition, there is a chance of a plastic water bottle sitting in direct sunlight getting hot enough to spark a fire.  High heat can also affect the flavor of carbonated soda, and there have been cases of cans or bottles exploding due to high temperatures creating pressure inside the container.

Batteries and devices such as phones, cameras and laptops with batteries (and other components) do not do well in hot vehicles either as they can leak and fail. Credit cards are also susceptible to high heat as they may warp or become deformed and unusable. Aerosol cans containing hairspray, paint or other products are labeled safe for storage under 120 degrees Fahrenheit and could explode in higher temperatures, which a closed-up car can get up to sitting out in the sun on hot days.

Other items that can be affected by high heat include prescription and non-prescription medications. Experts say medications should be stored under 77 degrees (unless it is a medication that needs to be refrigerated) as heat can cause it to lose its effectiveness. If you do need to have items in a hot car, it is helpful to have an insulated bag or chest to keep something cool for a short time. Moreover, most importantly remember it is not safe to leave children, pets or the elderly in a car parked in the sun for any length of time.

MorningStar of Littleton senior living community offers the finest assisted living and Alzheimer’s care in the area. How Assisted Living Helps Maintain Routines and Schedules

July 25, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Seniors feel most like themselves when they can maintain their usual schedules and routines. Like anyone, seniors might enjoy having their morning cup of coffee at their favorite coffee shop, going on an afternoon walk, or watching a favorite movie in the evening. These familiar rhythms help to create a meaningful life and should still be available, even in assisted living communities.  MorningStar communities are designed to maintain and even enhance individual schedules while providing the best care possible.

Why is Routine Important?

At any age, sticking to a routine can help reduce stress and provide mental and emotional stability. Consistent schedules that feel familiar are great for seniors struggling with memory-related conditions, especially when adjusting to a new place. This is why MorningStar Assisted Living offers plenty of amenities and activities within an easily accessible community for seniors to continue living their lives as they would in their old home.

Community Activities and Amenities that Add Structure

Assisted living communities offer scheduled activities and programs throughout the week to get seniors out of their rooms and connect with others. Not only this, but many communal rooms and amenities offered at MorningStar provide a familiar sense for seniors. At MorningStar, seniors can catch up with a friend at the on-site bistro, get a scheduled hair trim with our hairstylists, and join hobbies and clubs. Being able to continue similar routines gives seniors their autonomy and helps them to feel fulfilled and excited for the next day.

Help Stop Medicare Fraud

July 07, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Statistics from the National Council on Aging (NCOA) and other sources estimate Medicare loses approximately $60 billion annually to fraud, errors, and abuse. Experts caution anyone on Medicare is at risk for fraudulent charges and examples include:

  • Billing for services or supplies that were not provided

  • Providing unsolicited supplies to beneficiaries

  • Misrepresenting a diagnosis, a beneficiary’s identity, the service provided, or other facts to justify payment

  • Prescribing or providing excessive or unnecessary tests and services

  • Violating the participating provider agreement with Medicare by refusing to bill Medicare for covered services or items and billing the beneficiary instead

  • Offering or receiving a kickback (bribe) in exchange for a beneficiary’s Medicare number

  • Requesting Medicare numbers at an educational presentation or in an unsolicited phone call

  • Routinely waiving co-insurance or deductibles

Experts say fraudulent schemes are growing and there aren’t enough agents to keep up. The Office of Inspector General (OIG), which investigates Medicare fraud, works with a staff of approximately 450 agents for the whole country.

If you are on Medicare, you can help prevent some of the fraud as many schemes target beneficiaries directly by stealing their identities or enlisting them as unwitting accomplices. Medicare.gov advises seniors to start by protecting their Medicare card like they would a credit card. This includes not giving out the number to anyone other than your healthcare provider or other people you know should have it. In addition, they say it is important to check your Medicare Summary Notices (MSNs) or claims statements carefully. If you see a charge for a service you didn’t get or a product you didn’t order, it could be fraud. If you suspect fraud, report it at 1-800-MEDICARE.

Is it Time to Start Talking About Assisted Living?

June 27, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

When is the right time to start talking to your parents or loved one about assisted living? Sometimes, the day comes sooner than we anticipated. You don’t have to worry about this conversation. If you are worried about your parents’ or loved one’s safety, it may be time to look into living options. Here are some signs that it is time to start considering and talking about assisted living :

Common Signs that Your Loved One is Struggling

If your loved one has been behaving differently, or you are worried about their wellbeing when you’re alone, it’s important to take note of any of the following things that may hint at the need for care options.

  1. Can’t Keep up with Regular House Maintenance

We all fall behind on our chores from time to time. But if you are noticing that trash is piling up, expired food is in the fridge, the pets aren’t being cared for, or bills are going unpaid, it may be time to intervene. Being unable to keep up with the home is a common sign of overwhelm and even cognitive decline. If these are things you are noticing, start looking into trusted options near you.

  2. Behavior and Personality Changes

Seniors will tend to experience minimal personality changes as they age. They might not be interested in the same things as before, or maybe they’re a little more antsy or frustrated than usual. Slight changes in behavior are fine, but if you begin to see major changes in your loved one’s personality, there could be something else going on. Cognitive decline usually presents itself as forgetfulness, anger, unpredictable moods, and changes in sleep habits.

  3. Poor Hygiene and Self-Care

Is your loved one forgetting to change their clothes? Maybe they are having a hard time remembering to brush their teeth or shower on their own? If a senior is struggling to properly care for themselves without your help or reminder, this is another sign that it may be time to consider, so that they can have the support they need.

Healthy Choices for Snacking

June 27, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Many of us experience a mid-morning or late afternoon slump in terms of energy and need a little bite of something to give us a lift. While experts say snacking can be a good thing, it is important to do it with healthy options. They emphasize the best snacks are low-sugar and nutrient-rich; and provide energy as well as support overall health. Snacks rich in fiber and protein help keep us feeling full. Foods to avoid are ultra-processed and high in calories, fat, sodium and added sugar.

Some examples of healthy snacks: smoothies. They can be made with fresh greens, your choice of milk and fruit. Along the same line is a cup of low-fat yogurt topped with fresh or frozen, thawed berries. If you don’t like yogurt, a cup of cottage cheese with fruit is a good alternative.

Kale is one of the healthiest leafy, green vegetables; and kale chips are a fun way to enjoy it. Moreover, they are very easy to make on your own. Prep carrots, celery and other raw veggies in advance to dip into humus or low-fat yogurt dip. Other quick and easy snacks include steamed edamame, unsalted pepitas, nuts and fresh fruits.

The popular superfood, chia seeds, are loaded with protein and fiber, and support heart and brain health. One tasty way to eat them is as a chia pudding, which is another very simple thing to make. Other quick snack ideas include peanut butter and apple slices or guacamole spread on whole wheat toast.

Whatever snack you decide, make it something you enjoy. Registered dietitian at the Cleveland Clinic Department of Wellness & Preventive Medicine, Kristin Kirkpatrick, M.S., R.D., L.D., says regardless of how good it is for you, if you don’t like it, you probably won’t eat it. She explains that “studies show that when you take this important factor into your dietary pattern, you are more likely to stick with it. For example, if you don’t like kale, don’t include it—instead, find another green or cruciferous veggie that you love.”

At the MorningStar of Littleton senior living community, we proudly serve meals prepared under the guidance of our Executive Chef, who knows how to make every meal a special occasion. Assisted Living Helps Your Parents Stay Independent

June 25, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Seniors fear losing their independence, and understandably so. Elderly adults have lived long, beautiful lives, full of years of self-sufficiency and personal autonomy. For many seniors, the idea of a senior living community can feel overwhelming. This is especially true if they have lived on their own for a long time.

While moving into assisted living can be an adjustment, there are many positives to this type of senior living community. Encouraging autonomy is one of the major ones. MorningStar Senior Living promotes independence and autonomy within their community in the following ways:

Maintaining Routines and Schedules

It’s important to maintain a senior’s personal routine and schedule as much as possible when they are adjusting to a new facility. Like any person, seniors experience more autonomy when they have a choice over what they do with their day. Flexible and accessible assisted living communities give seniors the freedom to fill their day with whatever feels best to them. With support, seniors can explore the community, meet new people, join clubs, attend free group activities, and even go to the salon and on-site cafe. Having easily accessible features and amenities allows seniors to keep up with their usual schedules without needing to leave the community.

Empathetic and Skilled Staff

Assisted living communities don’t hire “babysitters.” Trusted staff their neighborhoods with empathetic and skilled staff that possess the tools to properly care for the people that live there. These elder-care professionals know how to navigate the changing needs of seniors and how to handle emotional challenges or emergencies should they arise. Skilled staff also have the knowledge to know how to best care for and support each senior. No resident is exactly alike, and each one requires a different level of care. The staff at MorningStar know that respecting these boundaries and supplying the right support is the greatest way to embrace independence in seniors.

Diagnosing Alzheimer’s Disease

June 16, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

While there is not one single test used to definitively diagnose Alzheimer’s disease, doctors typically use a variety of tools to make a diagnosis. Along with the person’s primary care provider, specialists like neurologists, neuropsychologists, geriatricians and geriatric psychiatrists may all be involved in determining if the patient’s problems are Alzheimer’s or caused by other reasons.

The process starts with a medical workup done by a health care provider that includes the person’s history of medical problems as well as any history of psychiatric, cognitive or behavioral problems. It is important to tell the doctor about all current medications including over-the-counter-drugs and supplements the person is taking. Your doctor will also want to know if there is a family history of Alzheimer’s or other cognitive problems.

A physical exam should include a check of reflexes, blood pressure levels and questions regarding sleep patterns, diet, exercise and other lifestyle habits. A structural brain imaging scan such an MRI or computed tomography is used to rule out damage to the brain from stroke, tumors, head trauma or a build-up of fluid. Blood and urine tests can rule out other reasons for symptoms. The Alzheimer’s Association says common causes of dementia-like symptoms include depression, untreated sleep apnea, delirium, side effects of medications, thyroid problems, certain vitamin deficiencies and excessive alcohol consumption.

The doctor may also use one of several cognitive, functional tests to evaluate the person’s memory, thinking and simple problem-solving skills. Professionals state, “There is an urgent need for a simple, inexpensive, non-invasive and easily available diagnostic tool such as blood tests to diagnose the disease.” Currently researchers are experimenting with a variety of tests to enable them to track changes more easily in the brain to identify the disease. Health professionals do not recommend routine genetic testing for Alzheimer’s disease at this time.

Along with assisted living, Colorado Springs’ MorningStar at Mountain Shadows offers individualized, specialized care in our Reflections Neighborhood for those at the onset of Alzheimer’s disease through to the most advanced stages.  Beginning with compassionate caregivers to activities, programs and meal services tailored to our residents’ special needs, we bring a deep understanding of the disease to our care.  Please contact us or visit our website for more information about trusted senior living communities at MorningStar.

A Good Diet Promotes Healthy Aging

June 13, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

The National Institute on Aging (NIA) explains diet plays a large role in the aging process. To optimize our own health, they recommend we start by understanding the different food groups (published by the USDA); and how each one helps form healthy eating patterns for a particular age group.

Experts say diet is one aspect of healthy aging and is especially important for seniors who are at greater risk for cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes as well as conditions related to loss of bone and muscle mass such as osteoporosis and sarcopenia. Other aspects of healthy aging include maintaining a healthy weight, exercising, and getting a good night’s sleep.

One of the best food groups that encourage healthy aging is vegetables, which are rich in vitamins and minerals, and carbohydrates. These include dark green vegetables, red and orange vegetables, and starchy vegetables; as well as legumes (beans and peas) that are also found in the protein food group.

The NIA reports fruits are another critical food group and are not consumed often enough by older adults. Fruits contain carbohydrates along with extra fiber that helps keep the digestive system moving. Recommendations include eating fruits with the skin on but be sure to wash them thoroughly before eating. If you choose to eat fruit in a can, dried or from frozen, choose options lowest in sugar.

Fiber, a type of carbohydrate the body doesn’t digest, is another healthy food group. It can be found in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and beans. Fiber-rich foods can help prevent stomach or intestinal problems and lower cholesterol.

At least half of our daily intake of grains should be consumed in products made with whole grains. These provide iron and many B vitamins. Examples include whole wheat bread, whole oats, whole bulgur (also known as cracked wheat), and whole cornmeal.

For protein, it is recommended we choose low-fat meats, poultry, seafood, eggs, beans, nuts, seeds, and soy products. Dairy products help maintain strong bones and provide several vital nutrients including calcium, potassium, and vitamin D. Again, the best choices are low-fat options. Experts say also use oils instead of solid fats, such as butter or lard that are high in saturated fat whenever possible.

MorningStar at Mountain Shadows in Colorado Springs offers 45 stylish assisted living suites in a choice of studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floor plans. For seniors with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, our distinct Reflections Neighborhood offers 19 suites devoted to the individualized, specialized care of our most tender residents. Helping Mom or Dad Transition to an Assisted Living Community

June 11, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Moving can be exhausting and many of us have mixed feelings about the change – both looking forward to a new adventure and sad to leave our old life behind. Now imagine what your parents may be feeling as they leave a familiar home for an assisted living community. The change can be even more difficult if they are going into memory care.

Experts say there are things family members can do to help ease the transition and make it a more positive experience. First, involve your loved one into the decision-making process as much as possible. Discuss the various benefits of each community regarding suites, amenities, food service and the helpfulness of the staff and administrators. Also, read online reviews from other families and residents; and take advantage of in-person tours.

Once the decision is made on a particular community, now help mom or dad decide on what to bring to their new space, keeping in mind it is probably smaller than their current home. Consider an item based on its practicality, footprint, and your loved one’s feelings toward it. Be sure to include personal mementos such as family pictures and a few of their most cherished treasures he/she has collected through the years. Other furniture and items can be given to family members, sold or donated to charity.

Experts advise adult children to play an active role in helping a loved one settle into their new home and to remember it is an emotional adjustment. In-person visits help as do phone calls to let them know you are still thinking of them.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, we are experienced in helping residents make a smooth transition to our community by working alongside our residents and their families to listen to concerns and help solve any problems. MorningStar’s assisted living residents enjoy stylish suites, all-day dining, wellness programs, activities and amenities including a theatre, fitness center, salon, fireside patio and scheduled transportation.  For those living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, we offer a distinct area staffed by a compassionate team of trained caregivers.

Alzheimer’s Disease Can Cause Behavior and Personality Changes

June 06, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

We know a person changes in several ways when living with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia. Memory problems and confusion are some of the most commonly known symptoms, but there are other behaviors just as common that can be unsettling and disruptive. The Medical News Today reports on the various behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia known as BPSDs.

Research suggests as many as 97% of people with dementia have one or more of the following symptoms: agitation; anxiety, psychosis, depression, apathy, irritability and/or physical or verbal aggression. Agitation may include behaviors such as pacing, wandering, restlessness and fidgeting. Repetitive movements and sleep disturbances are also common. Understanding these changes and learning strategies to deal with them can result in better care for the patient and make it easier for caregivers to cope.

Doctors are not sure why dementia patients suffer from psychosis but suggest it could be due to interruptions and changes to neurotransmitters such as dopamine, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), and serotonin. Along with these interferences to brain waves, many dementia patients also suffer from poor memory and impaired visuospatial abilities, which can confuse the person as to what is real and what isn’t.

Sleep disturbances can come in the form of hypersomnia with symptoms of reversed sleep-wake patterns and fragmented sleep. Another problem can be rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder. To help combat sleep disturbances, experts recommend limiting naps during the daytime and exposing the person to daylight (especially morning light) and getting physical exercise.

If you are a family caregiver, it is important to reach out and get help. The Alzheimer’s Association is a good resource for both information and support as is the person’s healthcare team.

Along with assisted living, MorningStar at Mountain Shadows provides individualized care for those with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. Our memory care is based on our extensive knowledge and experience with dementia-related diseases and we support residents from the early onset of the disease through the final stages. Please contact us or visit our website for more information about our compassionate, loving community.

Ways to Express Gratitude Everyday

June 02, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

While studies find feeling grateful can make us happier and less anxious; like every skill, it does take some practice. An article at CNN.com explains gratitude should not be saved for special occasions, but like love, should be practiced or expressed regularly. With a little effort, you should be able to find something to be grateful for every day.

Experts share four ways to help you practice gratitude. The first is to create a gratitude album on your phone by taking a picture each day of things that bring you joy like a meaningful text, beautiful scenery, fun events on your calendar and pics of loved ones. Don’t worry about your photography skill. Now instead of scrolling through social media, use some of that time to look through your own gratitude album and appreciate the good things in your life.

Another gratitude practice is to take the time to breathe. Mindful breathing techniques can help relieve tension and reduce stress, and only take a few minutes. When doing, remember to be thankful for your breathing, which is a life-sustaining force. Combine breathing with feelings of gratitude and patience as you strive to feel relaxed and calm. The Internet offers several methods for practicing breathing techniques.

Expressing gratitude to someone each day by thanking them for their support and/or love are other ways to feel gratitude. Studies show it helps to build a better relationship between two people who routinely express or receive gratitude from their partner.

Lastly experts say end your day by feeling grateful. One practice is to think of three things you are grateful for and write them down in a notebook or piece of paper. They do not have to be big “things” but just something that makes you feel happy. When you wake in the morning, read over your three things and take a few moments to reflect on them.
