High-Quality Nutrition Supports Overall Health

August 22, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

While losing weight is tough, for many of us, the real battle is keeping the weight off. Caroline Thomason, RD, CDCES, a dietitian and diabetes educator based in Washington, D.C., explains there is a growing body of evidence showing that when we focus on higher-quality nutrition, not only does our weight improve but also our health. Changing to a diet with more vegetables and fruits means you will take in fewer calories than you previously did, allowing weight loss to naturally take place. An improved diet results in better health.

One of the biggest problems with “dieting” is that a person too often focuses on calorie content without regard to nutritional value.” Experts say this makes sticking to a calorie restrictive diet harder. Once we include nutritional foods in our day-to-day diet, it makes us feel fuller and even lets us eat more while taking in fewer calories.

Another thing about a life-long nutritional diet filled with fruits and vegetables, plant-based proteins and whole foods is it promotes better health and quality of life as you age. Research shows people who eat better have a lower risk of many chronic diseases. Furthermore, dietitians say it is never too late to adopt healthier eating patterns. By simply changing diet, many people can lower high-blood pressure and cholesterol as well as reverse diabetes.

Doctors agree adopting good eating habits that are permanent is what counts rather than short-term diets. Along with diet; exercise, sleep and stress management are all important for better health.

MorningStar of Wheat Ridge is an outstanding retirement communities in Metro Denver. Our beautiful home offers assisted living residents a lifestyle of well-being, community and security. A Heartbreaking Step in the Alzheimer’s Journey

August 20, 2025 by Quinn A in retirement communities

Apart from having to watch a loved one go through the devastating stages of Alzheimer’s or another dementia disease, the next saddest thing may be when the person stops recognizing you.   This can bring up all sorts of feelings, of which some, while not fair, are there nonetheless.  When we take time to visit a family member (in person or via video call) in retirement communities and they don’t even know who we are, some people wonder why they are making the effort.

However, a long-term caregiver reminds us how we can be certain the person is not reacting to our presence in some way?  Maybe the sound of our voice, or the touch of our hand?   In the same way people in comas have said they heard the voices of loved ones even when they were unable to communicate, perhaps a person in the later stages of Alzheimer’s disease knows we are there for them on some level.  At the very least, in whatever way they can understand, we want them to know they are loved and valued.

Experts suggest a way to help make yourself more recognizable to your parents or spouse.  If you are an adult child, try putting together a photo timeline of you as a small child, an adolescent, a young adult to a current picture.  Spouses can do the same starting with a picture from their early days as a couple to the present.

For anyone having difficulty being around a loved one with Alzheimer’s, it may be helpful to learn all you can about the disease so you understand what is going on.  It will also teach you better ways to more effectively communicate with the person.

Along with senior apartments, MorningStar of Wheat Ridge offers specialized care for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Our holistic care is individualized for each resident and every aspect of our Reflections Neighborhood is tailored to serve their needs.  As dementia care specialists, we provide support to our residents and their families with an array of services, wellness programs and activities for the best quality of life. Residents receive 24-hour care from a well-trained staff, health monitoring, medication management and access to a full-time nurse. Please contact us or visit our website for more information about trusted memory care at MorningStar.

Maintain Your Mobility for a Healthy and Independent Life

August 18, 2025 by Quinn A in senior apartments

When we were younger most of us were lucky enough to take our mobility for granted. We didn’t have to think about whether we would be “able” to physically do a routine task. However, as we grow older, our bodies can encounter physical limitations that threaten our independence. Experts say protecting our mobility requires attention and the “use it or lose it” mantra is a fitting one. Lifestyle choices and exercise as well as diet and preventive care can help keep us stronger and steadier with fewer aches and more stamina.

The Harvard Health Publishing by Harvard Medical School defines mobility as the ability to move purposefully as you go through your day, and is the foundation for living a healthy and independent life. It requires a certain amount of physical stamina, strength, balance, coordination, and range of motion. Mobility allows seniors to do everyday things like get out of bed each morning, climb a set of stairs and bring in groceries from the car. Poor mobility causes problems such as being unable to get up out of a chair on your own or getting up from the toilet without helping hand. Good mobility helps keep seniors safe by lessening their risk of falls and subsequent injuries; and allows the person to live on their own.

The US Census Bureau reports that mobility issues are the most frequent cause of disability for people over 65 and impacts their ability to safely climb stairs and walk. While some mobility problems can’t be helped, experts say generally to maintain mobility, seniors should do exercises targeted to increase strength, balance, stamina and coordination.

Ask your doctor, physical therapist or trainer on ways to preserve and improve your freedom of movement. Moreover, if you are unsteady on your feet, check with them about using a mobility aid such as a cane or walker to improve steadiness.

For exceptional senior apartments, we encourage you to consider MorningStar of Wheat Ridge. We are an all-inclusive community, offering a dining service under the direction of our Executive Chef and a range of floor plans to meet varying needs. Residents enjoy onsite amenities, wellness programs and activities designed to promote a healthy, engaged lifestyle. Thoughtful Gifts for a Loved One With Dementia

July 23, 2025 by Quinn A in retirement homes

We all like to bring our elderly parents or loved ones a gift to show them just how much we care about them. It is often hard to know what to give to a senior, and especially difficult if a loved one is living with dementia.  Experts suggest you help them find ways to reminisce about their lives and accomplishments, and give them things that will bring a smile to their face and some joy into their life.

Many ideas for someone with Alzheimer’s or another dementia disease include personalized gifts.  One such gift is a talking photo book that allows you to record your own personal commentary to go along with each photograph.  This can be a fun book to sit and enjoy with your family member as it helps to trigger memories and conversation.  Many companies offer such books, and prices typically vary with the number of photos and recording time available.

Buying an interactive book featuring vivid photographs and large print on a subject your mom or dad love such as animals or flowers can also promote conversation and provide a way to spend relaxing time together.  To ease stress or agitation, you may want to consider getting them a fiddle muff.  A fiddle muff can provide comfort and warmth as well as activity to promote increased hand flexibility and brain stimulation.

Another meaningful gift is a cozy, customized blanket filled with photos of the grandkids or a beloved family pet.  On the Internet you can find companies that will do a collage of family photos or a singular one in a variety of materials.  Many of the blankets have surprisingly sharp images and can be machine washed and dried.

If the person has a hard time falling asleep or relaxing, calming visual and or audio stimulation may help.  Several companies have all-in-one cubes that offer a range of calming music and visual displays that can turn the ceiling into a beautiful night sky.

Along with retirement homes, MorningStar of Wheat Ridge offers specialized memory care to those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. Our Reflections Neighborhood is meticulously designed to accommodate the special needs of residents, allowing them as much independence as possible.  Each resident receives an individualized care plan and participates in a wide variety of wellness programs and purposeful activities including exercise, music, life skills, art, special celebrations and other events. For senior apartments, please contact us or visit our website for more information.

Seniors and Night Driving

July 21, 2025 by Quinn A in retirement homes

Many older adults complain about being unable to see clearly while driving at night. Experts explain that night blindness, also known as nyctalopia, makes it difficult to see well in dim or dark settings as the person’s eyes are unable to adjust to changes in brightness or to detect lights. Driving at night with this condition is not only a problem but is dangerous, and it is more common in seniors.

The condition is caused when the iris, the colored part of the eye, and the retina aren’t working well together. The iris has muscles that widen or narrow the opening of the pupil to adjust how much light enters the eyes. The retina has light-detecting cones and rods, which manage vision in dim light. When the irises’ muscles don’t react well; pupils can dilate and let in too much light or remain too small and make it hard to see in dim light.

A number of things can exacerbate night blindness including something we cannot control – old age. Dr. Isabel Deakins, an optometrist with Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts Eye and Ear, explains as we age, “”The number of rods in our eyes diminishes, pupils get smaller, and the muscles of the irises weaken.”

Other conditions that can cause night blindness include glaucoma, cataracts, dry eye syndrome and certain medications. There are treatments for glaucoma, cataracts and dry eyes. For other people, a stronger pair of glasses or ones that reduce glare may help.

Other strategies to improve night vision are to routinely clean the windshield, side mirrors and headlights. If you wear glasses, make sure they are clean. Be sure to dim the interior dashboard lights for night driving and use the night setting for the rear view mirror. If you are having trouble seeing in dim or dark settings, you need to stop driving and make an appointment with an optometrist or ophthalmologist.

Heart Disease Patients Benefit From an Involved Caregiver

June 18, 2025 by Quinn A in senior apartments

According to AARP there are things family members can do to help a loved one live their best life with coronary heart disease. They quote Vinoy Prasad, M.D., director of interventional cardiology and cardiac rehabilitation at Loma Linda University International Heart Institute in California, who explains after a crisis like a heart attack, “People who have a lot of support from their family actually recover better, they recover faster, and they do better long term.”

Coronary artery diseases include atherosclerosis, which doctors say is a buildup of plaque in the arteries and is the most common cause of heart disease. Plaque builds up in the arteries over years, and as the condition progresses, it can result in a complete blockage and produce a blood clot. High cholesterol, smoking, obesity, diabetes and a family history are linked to the disease. Other less common causes of coronary disease include non-obstructive coronary artery disease that damages artery linings and restricts blood flow without plaque buildup.

Statistics show on-going care for heart patients is more likely to be successful when the patient has an involved caregiver. Lisa Kitko, the co-author of a 2022 Heart Association scientific statement, explains that heart patients with involved caregivers tend to take their medications properly, follow medical instructions and get to appointments.

Kitko says like most things, another set of ears is better than one, so accompanying a patient to their appointments makes it easier to follow instructions as you are both on the same page. Family members are also helpful in providing transport to appointments and to programs such as cardiac rehab and support groups.

At MorningStar of Wheat Ridge, we offer the amenities and services to help seniors maintain their best quality of life. Our retirement communities provide living with a choice of well-designed suites, and a whole range of activities and programs along with tasty, nutritional meals. For those living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, our distinct Reflections Neighborhood provides holistic memory care that celebrates and elevates life. Women Can Protect Their Health With Recommended Screenings

May 30, 2025 by Quinn A in retirement communities

Medical professionals stress the importance of women getting the proper screenings to protect their health and discover problems early when they may be more treatable. Screenings are designed for otherwise healthy individuals and recommendations change as we age.

An article in the publication US News & World Report, states, “Your doctor can help you tailor the recommendations based on your goals of care, personal and family health history, age and life expectancy.”  This post discusses 4 of the 14 screenings in the article.

Breast cancer screening with a mammogram is recommended annually for women from age 40-50, every two years for those 50 to 74 and on a case-by-case basis after that.  Doctors say mammograms are key to the prevention as well as early detection of breast cancer, when it is most easily treated. Talk to your doctor about testing options if you are under the age of 40 and have a mother or sister who had breast cancer at a young age or have a high-risk genetic marker.

It is recommended women 50 years and older have a colonoscopy every ten years. As colon cancer is more common in African Americans and occurs at an earlier age, it is advised to start testing at age 45. Younger women/teens with a family history of adenomatous polyposis – a genetic condition that starts in someone as young as in the teen years may need colonoscopies at a much earlier age. Also, a woman with a history of Crohn’s disease or inflammatory bowel disease will likely be advised to have a colonoscopy at a younger age than 50. There are also other screening tests for colon cancer which may be right for you.

Diabetes is another disease a woman 45 years and older should be screened for every three years. Exceptions for screening earlier are a family history of diabetes; obesity and high blood pressure readings or you take medications for HBP.

A Lipid profile assessment testing a woman’s cholesterol and triglyceride levels as well as the risk for heart disease should be done every five years starting at age 45, or younger for those at high risk. If lifestyle changes do not reduce your numbers, you may need medications. As with all screenings, discuss with your doctor how often you need to be screened and what steps to take to improve your health.

MorningStar of Wheat Ridge offers assisted living, memory care and short-term stays.  Our range of onsite amenities, care services, wellness programs and activities allow residents to live life to the fullest. Both the Amount and Quality of Sleep Are Important for Overall Health

April 23, 2025 by Quinn A in retirement homes

The American Heart Association offers a checklist of eight key measures for improving and maintaining cardiovascular health. Life’s Essential 8 is designed to highlight things we can do to lower our risk for heart disease, stroke and other major health problems.

In 2022, the Association added sleep duration to the list as a component of heart health. They say the amount and quality of sleep can influence a person’s eating habits, mood, memory, internal organs and more.

One advantage to getting enough sleep is being more productive. After spending years working long hours to the detriment of a good night’s sleep, Ariana Huffington now says, “The irony is that a lot of people forgo sleep in the name of productivity. But in fact our productivity is reduced substantially when we’re sleep deprived.”

Professor of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Charles Czeisler, explains being sleep deprived can impair your abilities and is like being drunk. Poor sleep habits can cause you to eat more to feel more energetic, and may increase your risk for high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

It is recommended adults get a solid 7 to 9 hours of sleep each day and a sleep routine will help you achieve this goal. Start by going to bed each night around the same time so you can wake up refreshed at the same time each morning. If possible, open your curtains to let in the morning sunshine or turn on the bedroom lights. Research still shows breakfast is the most important meal of the day and should consist of healthy foods.

Another thing to get your day off right is to take a few minutes each morning doing something like practicing mindfulness or yoga. The other Life’s Essential 8 include maintaining a healthy diet, fitness, quitting nicotine, losing weight, and watching your cholesterol, blood pressure and risk for diabetes.

At MorningStar of Wheat Ridge, our vibrant home is designed from the ground up to serve our residents’ every need. Our community offers stylish retirement homes suites in a variety of floor plans. In addition, the Reflections Neighborhood is devoted to the specialized care of those with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.  Please contact us or visit our website to learn what sets us apart from other retirement communities and why MorningStar is a great place to call home.

Grandparents Are Celebrated in September

April 18, 2025 by Quinn A in retirement communities

While Mother’s Day and Father’s Day occur in May and June each year, grandparents have their special day in September.  To recognize the value of the relationship between grandchildren and grandparents, Grandparents Day is celebrated on the Sunday after Labor Day. In 2025 it will occur on Sunday, September 7th. While not a public holiday, President Jimmy Carter signed the proclamation in 1978 stating it should be observed each year.

For kids, having more people involved in their lives other than their parents is a good thing. Many grandparents’ unconditional love brings with it acceptance, patience and unwavering support as they readily recognize the child’s accomplishments and provide a safe, trusted harbor. Several studies validate the love and emotional closeness grandparents provide can make a positive impact on a child’s healthy development. Moreover, as grandparents may be retired, they have more leisure time to spend with the grandkids.

Research also shows that a close, involved relationship is good for grandparents too, and contributes to a healthier, happier and possibly even longer life. Grandparents’ relationship with grandkids can include the role of caregiver, teacher, playmate and cheering squad depending on where they live; and does not come with the responsibilities of being the parent. Grandparents can uniquely provide the child with a sense of their family history, heritage, and identity. They know great stories about the child’s parents and can help pass on family traditions and life stories.

If your child does not have any grandparents, consider adopting an elderly person who does not have grandchildren.  If you don’t know any senior citizens personally, call a senior community in your area and ask if they have activities where your child would be welcome. If you missed last year’s Grandparents Day, put it on the calendar and celebrate it with some of your favorite seniors this year.

MorningStar of Wheat Ridge is a top assisted living community in the Denver area with a mission statement to:

MorningStar at Mountain Shadows Welcomes Couples

March 14, 2025 by Quinn A in Senior Living Communities

When a couple’s health experiences are different, and one is healthier than the other, that person may assume the role of caregiver. As time evolves, the needs of the chronically ill spouse may become more complex and require daily care. This can be difficult for the healthier spouse, and even impact his/her own health and well-being.

To ensure both parties have an opportunity for the best quality of life; and senior living communities may be the answer. While leaving a family home and transitioning to community life is a big change, the transition is easier for the person with a spouse or partner by their side. Marissa Kirby, NHA, CHC, CHPC, and vice president of compliance at NEWGEN HEALTH, LLC, explains, “In many cases, particularly when a couple has been married for many years, the ability to live together can make or break their decision on whether or not to move to an assisted living facility.”

Many senior living communities like MorningStar at Mountain Shadows welcome couples; where we not only expertly and compassionately address the needs of a person living with a chronic illness or disability but also the needs of the healthier spouse. MorningStar’s assisted living provides the maintenance-free environment of independent living with the addition of care services for the ADLs (activities of daily living) tailored to the resident. We offer an array of floor plans including studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom suites. Each suite is equipped with a kitchenette, a handicapped-accessible bathroom, a 24-hour emergency call system, and a private heating & air conditioning system.  Your monthly fee includes cable TV and utilities, weekly housekeeping and laundry and linen services.  We do trash removal and spot cleaning daily.  Moreover, if you are wondering, we are pet friendly!

Senior-friendly activities, resort-style amenities and built-in companionship can be a winning combination for many couples. In addition to assisted living, our Reflections Neighborhood has suites devoted to those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. Please contact us or visit our website for more information.

Living with Alzheimer’s Disease

March 12, 2025 by Quinn A in retirement communities

A diagnosis of Alzheimer’s brings with it a range of emotions. Learning that you have a disease with no cure and no way to control what is happening to you can create feelings of anger, denial, depression and resentment as well as fear.  Another common emotion is isolation and the feeling that no one else understands what you are going through.  There can even be a sense of relief at finding out what is happening to you and having those concerns validated.

The Alzheimer’s Association counsels that it helps to try and come to terms with your diagnosis and the emotions you are experiencing as a way to help you to move forward.  They explain that, “once you make the commitment to take care of your emotional needs; you may find that you can rise to the challenge and face your diagnosis.”

You will find helpful coping tips on their website to make it easier to deal with what you are going through.  One of their most important suggestions is to have good support whether it comes from joining a support group, sharing concerns with family and friends, or talking to a counselor or member of the clergy.  They also say to continue to do the activities you enjoy for as long as you are able.  Finally, they remind individuals to take time to “feel sad, mourn and grieve.”

Along with assisted living, MorningStar at Mountain Shadows in Colorado Springs offers compassionate and loving care to those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Our Reflections Neighborhood not only provides an atmosphere of safety and well-being but also encourages and supports choice and independence to the fullest extent possible.  Memory care residents participate in recreational and purposeful activities, including exercise, music, life skills and art, as well as outings and special events. Above all, MorningStar residents are treated with the utmost respect and dignity.

MorningStar is guided by a culture rooted in our mission of honoring God, valuing seniors, and investing in our team, which allows us to deliver services with warmth, sincerity and depth of purpose. Are You or a Loved One Considering Assisted Living?

October 25, 2024 by Quinn A in retirement communities

If a parent or other loved one is starting to slow down and would welcome assistance with personal daily care or has mobility issues requiring major renovations to their existing home, it may be time to think about assisted living. While there may be several retirement communities to choose from, it is useful to have some insight into your parents’ needs when evaluating assisted living communities.

A Place for Mom, an Internet referral service, explains a good place to start is to “compare factors like staff friendliness, amenities, and overall culture.” If you plan to do a virtual tour or onsite visit, come prepared with a list of questions regarding costs, care plans, amenities, programming, and general lifestyle and culture.

During your visit, observe residents. Do they seem engaged, happy? Are they encouraged to participate in activities and events? Ask to see the community’s calendar of activities. If mom or dad loves to play bridge, do the retirement communities have a game room and a bridge club? If mom or dad is no longer driving, does the community offer scheduled transportation to doctor visits and other appointments? Do they do outside trips to area shopping and local parks?

Remember your loved one’s suite is where they will sleep but the community is where they will live.  Are the common rooms inviting? How about the outdoor areas? Is there a nice courtyard or terrace where they can sit and relax on a nice day? If mom or dad enjoys a glass of wine before dinner, is it available? Other things to ask about include the meal service, the community’s ability to meet both present and future care needs and how emergencies are handled.

MorningStar of Wheat Ridge is designed from the ground up to meet the needs of residents with a range of luxury amenities, senior care, hospitality services, wellness programs, and activities. Our beautiful retirement communities offer assisted living suites with a choice of spacious studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floorplans. Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia

September 23, 2024 by Quinn A in retirement communities

We know a person changes in several ways when living with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia. Memory problems and confusion are some of the most commonly known symptoms, but there are other behaviors just as common that can be unsettlingly and disruptive. The Medical News Today reports on the various behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia known as BPSDs.

Research suggests as many as 97% of people with dementia have one or more of the following symptoms: agitation; anxiety; psychosis; depression, apathy, irritability and/or physical or verbal aggression. Agitation may include behaviors such as pacing, wandering, restlessness and fidgeting. Repetitive movements and sleep disturbances are also common. Understanding these changes and learning strategies to deal with them can result in better care for the patient and make it easier for caregivers to cope.

Doctors are not sure why dementia patients suffer from psychosis but suggest it could be due to interruptions and changes to neurotransmitters such as dopamine, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), and serotonin. Along with these interferences to brain waves, many dementia patients also suffer from poor memory and impaired visuospatial abilities, which can confuse the person as to what is real and what isn’t.

Sleep disturbances can come in the form of hypersomnia with symptoms of reversed sleep-wake patterns and fragmented sleep. Another problem can be rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder. To help combat sleep disturbances, experts recommend limiting naps during the daytime and exposing the person to daylight (especially morning light) and getting physical exercise.

If you are a family caregiver, it is important to reach out and get help. The Alzheimer’s Association is a good resource for both information and support as is the person’s healthcare team.

Along with assisted living, MorningStar of Wheat Ridge provides individualized care for those with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. Our memory care is based on our extensive knowledge and experience with dementia-related diseases and we support residents from the early onset of the disease through the final stages. Please contact us or visit our website for more information about our compassionate, loving retirement communities.

How Assisted Living Can Prolong a Senior’s Life

July 26, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Seniors who struggle with everyday activities and health concerns can be more predisposed to stress, anxiety, chronic illnesses, and overall unhappiness. All that added stress can impact a senior’s lifespan, too. If you notice an elderly loved one struggling to feed themselves, complete chores, keep up with hygiene routines, or socialize, it may be time to consider options. Assisted Living options in Des Moines, Iowa can offer seniors an enhanced life experience with access to support with daily activities to keep them safe and healthy.

How Living Alone Can Impact Your Loved One

Living alone is not an inherent problem for most seniors. Many can maintain a routine, prepare their own meals, manage their transportation methods, and stay up-to-date with events and relationships without needing someone to check in or drop by. This isn’t the case with every senior, though.

For many reasons, a senior may begin to struggle to care for themselves, especially if they live alone or with a less observant roommate. Health conditions, memory loss, or general aging can make seniors more predisposed to struggling with caring for themselves.

How to Know It’s Time for Assisted Living

Sometimes it can be difficult to tell when it’s time to consider options for your loved one. Assisted Living is designed for seniors who do not need 24/7 supervision or hospitalization, but rather for seniors who need a little extra assistance with day-to-day activities, like planning meals, managing medications, and keeping up with chores and hygiene.

If you’re looking for Assisted Living in Des Moines, Iowa, MorningStar at Jordan Creek prides itself on being the ideal senior community because of their commitment to overall health and wellness. Find Companion Living in Premiere Assisted Living Des Moines

May 27, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

What’s one of the best ways to enhance a senior’s comfort and sense of security? Companion living options allow seniors to live intimately with someone they know and trust and is one of the many ways assisted living can make seniors feel more safe and comfortable. At MorningStar Assisted Living Des Moines, this arrangement is available for both couples and close friends, ensuring a supportive environment tailored to individual needs.

What is Companion Living?

Companion living is a great senior living option for those who are most comfortable living with someone they know and trust and who may need some extra help with daily living activities. Companion living is where two close individuals share a senior living apartment but can have separate care routines and treatments.

If you are looking for an affordable senior living option in Des Moines, be sure to consider companion living. Individuals can share the cost of rent, utilities, furniture, and even groceries that need to be purchased for the home.

The Benefits of Companion Living

A trustworthy companion, partner, spouse, family member, or friend can keep an eye on each other while navigating their new living arrangement. Living with someone you know is great because these individuals are already used to their loved ones needs and habits, which can help the other one to acclimate easier and begin to make their senior living facility their home. A companion can also update care managers and nurses within their senior living facility if routines or completion with activities begin to change. Those closest to us can pick up on things quicker than others sometimes and can notify caregivers when necessary.

How to Break the Stigma Around Assisted Living

May 24, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Although things are changing, many seniors may report a feeling of guilt or shame around relocating to a senior living home or assisted living care. These feelings are often perpetuated by family members and seniors are unable to recognize or refuse to admit the need for help from loved ones or a senior living community. This refusal often stems from the stigma surrounding the need for assistance, empathy, and care. It's important to address and remove this stigma to emphasize that needing help is a normal part of aging.

If you feel you or a loved one may be ready to transition to assisted living care, here are some tips on how to break the stigma when looking for the best assisted living des moines has to offer seniors.

1. Recognize the Signs

If you notice a loved one falling behind on bills, unable to keep up with typical household chores, or food frequently going bad in the fridge, it may be time for an honest discussion about assisted living options. Recognizing these signs as indicators that additional support might be necessary to ensure safety and well-being.

2. Have Honest Conversations

If you want to break the stigma around assisted living care, it’s important to engage in honest and respectful conversations with your loved ones about their needs. We all need help sometimes. It’s crucial to maintain respect and understanding during these discussions, ensuring that seniors do not feel ashamed or embarrassed about needing help.
