Engaging Activities for those with Limited Mobility

July 28, 2025 by Quinn A in Senior Living

While growing older can bring a new appreciation of life, it can also bring a series of challenges including a decline in health that impacts a person’s mobility. This can be due to chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, stroke and heart disease, arthritis, osteoporosis, diabetes and obesity. Other causes are diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s as well as profound vision or hearing loss that interferes with people’s abilities, requiring people to rethink some of their lifelong activities.

The good news is many of the things’ people enjoy doing can still be done – they just may need some modifications. During this phase of life, you may discover new activities you enjoy just as much as the things you had to let go. Most importantly experts say do not define yourself by your limitations.

Rather they remind seniors that staying active and engaged has many benefits including boosting physical and mental health; and provides people with a sense of purpose and meaning to their lives. It has also been shown to improve memory and slow cognitive decline. Studies find seniors who stay socially active can even lower blood pressure, elevate mood and reduce anxiety and stress.

Some activities enjoyed by seniors with limited mobility include things like gardening in raised-beds, chair yoga, Tai-chi, water aerobics and low-impact resistance training.  Creative pursuits such as painting or drawing, playing a musical instrument and learning a new cuisine; as well as games such as trivia or bridge brings meaning and joy to someone regardless of their physical limitations.

Senior living communities are great places to help seniors find purpose and companionship, along with the peace of mind that comes with knowing someone is always around to lend a hand if needed.  For senior living Littleton, CO seniors can trust, take a look at MorningStar of Littleton. Inexpensive Upgrades to Help Seniors Sell their Home

July 25, 2025 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Looking to sell your home but do not want to invest in pricey remodeling? For many seniors, their house is already paid off and they are just looking for an easy sell. The following inexpensive upgrades can add value to help update a home.

Realtors bring an experienced eye to knowing how to make an older home an easier sale without spending thousands and weigh-in on fairly affordable projects (typically under $500) that yield results and are easy-to-do. One of the first suggestions is to paint the front door a nice accent color to the exterior. The job only requires a small amount of paint and some time. Also you may get away without painting the entire exterior of the home by touching up areas that are peeling or looking particularly old.

Most of us have heard the word “curb appeal” and realtors say it really does matter. Abbey Drummond of Windermere Real Estate in Salt Lake City, Utah, explains prospective buyers can be put off by the look of the home even before they go inside. She says, “Anything from fresh mulch, updated house numbers, a new mailbox, or a bold front door color improves the curb appeal.” Additionally clean up garden beds, remove old leaves from the yard and have the exterior power washed and windows cleaned.

If a kitchen remodel is out of the budget, experts say a new kitchen faucet can really upgrade the look. The same goes for replacing outdated light fixtures with more modern, efficient lighting. This is especially helpful if all the light fixtures are builder quality and all look the same.

For rooms that are painted in bold colors, realtors say it is better to repaint in more neutral colors. Also, touch-up paint on scuffed and dirty walls and floorboards as it can really freshen up a home. Another realtor tip is to replace electric plug outlet covers with new ones. Covers cost a few dollars and are easy to put on. Along the same lines, upgrade cabinet pulls to refresh a kitchen or bathroom. However, bring along an old pull to match up with the new ones to ensure they fit the predrilled holes on your cabinets.

Deep cleaning rugs and carpets, and wood floors not only makes them look better but will help your home smell better. While a bigger expense, replacing carpet or having hardwood floors refinished yields great results. Remember, presenting your home in the best light possible can result in a quick sale.

What are Personalized Care Plans?

July 21, 2025 by Quinn A in Senior Living

If you have been researching assisted living options, you may have come across this term: Personalized Care Plans. While it may sound clinical, personalized care plans are one of the most important parts of the experience. They function as a roadmap that ensures each individual receives the right amount of support and care on their  journey. The plans are necessary for proper support that respects senior independence, health, and lifestyle.

What is a Personalized Care Plan in Assisted Living?

A personalized care plan is a uniquely designed and customizable senior care outline made to support a senior with their specific needs, health concerns, wants, and goals. These senior care plans are collaboratively developed, leaning on the help of medical providers, family members, and the senior themselves.

Rather than providing uniform care to every resident, MorningStar Senior Living believes in the necessity of designing personalized care plans for each senior. This direction ensures that every senior feels comfortable within their daily routine and has their health needs met while feeling independent and relaxed.

Why Does Personalized Care Matter?

Every senior has a special set of concerns. Developing personalized care plans allows staff to offer more successful support. Personalized care plans reduce the risk of medication mishaps, unmanaged distress, isolation, and distrust. Assisted living that offers personalized options promotes a sense of autonomy and comfort. Families receive peace of mind knowing their loved one is supported in their care journey, and seniors feel cared for while still having the freedom to be who they are.

It’s Estimated Over One Million Americans Are Living With Parkinson’s Disease

July 09, 2025 by Quinn A in Senior Living

The Parkinson’s Foundation reports that over one million people in the United States are estimated to be living with Parkinson’s disease; and that number is expected to increase to 1.2 million by 2030. However, they say the actual number of people with PD is likely to be higher as many cases go undiagnosed.

The Mayo Clinic explains Parkinson’s disease is a progressive disorder that affects the nervous system and the parts of the body controlled by the nerves. Currently there is no cure but medications can improve symptoms, and in some cases, surgery may also improve symptoms.

Parkinson’s symptoms typically start slowly, and one of the first things a person may notice is a slight tremor in one hand. Called resting tremors, they occur when the person’s hands are at rest, and the first tremors may only be the shaking of one finger. It is important to note that not all tremors are caused by Parkinson’s and you need to consult with your healthcare provider to see if it is Parkinson’s or something else causing the condition.

Stiffness or rigidity, and slowed movement known as bradykinesia are other common symptoms of the disease. Rigidity occurs in the shoulders, trunk, limbs and neck. Bradykinesia includes slowness in everyday movement and tasks such as walking, speech and eating. Another common sign of Parkinson’s is a change in the person’s handwriting. Small handwriting called micrographia occurs because of changes in the parts of the brain that control motor skills. As the disease progresses, people report problems with sleeping, mood swings and changes in cognitive skills as well as eye and vision issues.

The risk of Parkinson’s increases with age and most cases are diagnosed after the age of 60. Men are more likely to have the disease, and there is a small heredity link. Moreover, ongoing exposure to pesticides and herbicides may increase your risk.

For exceptional assisted living in Colorado Springs, we encourage you to consider MorningStar of Mountain Shadows.  Along with a choice of stylish floor plans, our residents enjoy healthy, delicious meals served all day in our full-service dining room, luxury amenities, wellness programs and built-in companionship.  Please contact us or visit our website for more information on senior living.

Skin Cancer is the Most Common Cancer in the United States

July 02, 2025 by Quinn A in Senior Living

The Skin Cancer Foundation reports that the most common cancer in the US is of the skin and strikes one in five people by age 70. The good news is 99 percent of all cases are curable if they are diagnosed and treated early enough. However, to spot skin cancer, we need to look for it, which is why doctors recommend adults to do a routine skin check once a month and have a skin check with a dermatologist at least once a year.

Since we are the best ones to notice any changes in our skin, it helps to know what to look for. Experts explain skin cancers appear in many shapes and sizes, and warning signs are associated with the different types of skin cancers. Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) (also called basal cell skin cancer) is the most common type of skin cancer accounting for 8 out of 10 cases. Basal cell cancer starts in the basal cell layer (the lower part of the epidermis).

The Mayo Clinic explains that squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) develops in the squamous cells that make up the middle and outer layers of the skin. While not life-threatening, it can be aggressive and typically occurs on sun-exposed skin including the scalp, the backs the hands, ears or lips, but can also occur on any part of the body.

Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer and generally develops anywhere in the body that has been exposed to UV light. Additionally, it may be found in spots not typically exposed to sunlight such as the bottom of the feet. The Mayo Clinic says melanoma can start as a change in an existing mole or a development of a new pigmented or unusual-looking growth on the skin.

It is important to avoid UV light from the sun or tanning beds as it is one of the top culprits to damaging and aging the skin as well as causing skin cancer. Make an appointment with your healthcare provider if you have a sore or scab that doesn’t heal or a flat patch of scaly skin that doesn’t go away.

Do You Need Blue Light Blocking Glasses?

June 04, 2025 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Blue light is a high-energy wavelength of visible light, which can be emitted from our digital screens that we all seem to be using more and more often. To “protect” us from this light, there are a plethora of blue light protected glasses everywhere. In addition, we are hearing how much we need them now more than ever. So the question is do they actually work and is the extra expense worth it?

Since 2008, researchers have been studying blue-blocking or filtering products that are trying to decrease the transmission of ultraviolet light with wavelengths between 440 and 500 nanometers. Some digital devices recently offer blue light-filtering settings to reduce the transmission of short wavelengths of light.

However, it may not surprise you to hear there is some debate on whether we are adversely affected by blue light, and to what degree blue light glasses can help the problem. The Mayo Clinic explains, while blue light occurs in daylight, the waves omitting from our devices at night could be detrimental to a good night’s sleep as they may shift our circadian rhythm, the body’s internal clock. However, they also say studies do not show an improvement in eye strain or better sleep quality by using blue-blocking glasses. The American Academy of Ophthalmology agrees and doesn’t recommend special eyewear for computer users.

Instead experts offer some suggestions to help diminish eyestrain and improve sleep such as monitoring the length of your screen time and taking frequent breaks. They say try the 20-20-20 rule of looking at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes. In addition, an updated eye exam could detect problems with your eyes and whether prescription glasses might help eyestrain.

Rheumatoid Arthritis and Fatigue

May 02, 2025 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has a broad range of symptoms including joint inflammation and swelling as well as pain primarily in the hands, feet, elbows, and knees. Another common symptom is fatigue with seven out of ten patients saying they experience a lack of sleep and feelings of fatigue.

Doctors say there are several reasons why people with RA suffer from drowsiness and weakness. One of the main causes is a direct result of the inflammation that disrupts normal bodily functions. Another commonly cited reason reported by patients is a hard time sleeping through the night given the pain and discomfort they feel.

The fatigue related to RA makes it hard to catch up on sleep. Without adequate sleep, people can suffer from a lack of concentration, and it’s harder to maintain an active lifestyle. Fatigue can also cause irritability and be associated with depression.

However, it is important to know that even though fatigue is common, doctors say if your symptoms worsen and/or you have a fever, persistent joint pain or unexplained weight loss, contact your healthcare provider. Experts say this can be a sign of disease progression or medical complications and require immediate attention.

People with RA can help manage fatigue by eating a healthy diet and engaging in low-impact exercises. Practicing good sleep habits like adhering to a regular bedtime and avoiding alcohol and caffeine several hours beforehand can additionally help. There is some data suggesting limiting TV or your exposure to devices emitting blue light a few hours before bedtime can help you sleep better.

Along with adopting good lifestyle habits, talk to your healthcare provider about medications to help reduce pain. Other strategies include learning relaxing techniques like breathing exercises and mindfulness and building a strong support network to reduce stress.

For assisted living facilities or memory care, we encourage you to consider MorningStar at Mountain Shadows. Our beautiful community is designed to meet residents’ every need.  From healthy daily meals to wellness programs and activities, we have a whole range of services and amenities to ensure their comfort and wellbeing. Good Mobility Helps Maintain Your Independence

April 30, 2025 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Normal aging brings about a decline in our physical abilities that affect strength, stamina and speed – all associated with declining muscle mass. Harvard Health Publishing explains that there is not much decline in our muscles between the ages of 20 and 40; after age 40 there can be a decline of up to 1% to 2% per year in lean body mass and 1.5% to 5% per year in strength.

Mobility is key to protecting our independence. Along with losing muscle mass, other common problems in older adults include poor reflexes and balance, and loss of flexibility. Fortunately there are things we can do to encourage a healthier, safer aging process.

One of the first things is to avoid a sedentary lifestyle. One prevailing myth many older adults believe is physical activity will lead to injury or a fall. Experts say the actual truth is too much sitting causes muscle loss and decreased flexibility. For older adults, it is more important to exercise regularly to compensate for bodily changes in hormones and other factors that occur with aging.

Strength exercises using light weights or bands can help protect bones, build muscle and improve flexibility and balance along with aerobics, stretching and special balance exercises.  These include things such as brisk walking, jogging, biking, swimming, or cardio classes. To help build strength, balance, and flexibility, consider a class in yoga, tai chi, Pilates or isometric weightlifting.

Additionally regularly exercising not only helps maintain our mobility but is associated with a stronger heart and less occurrence of cancer. Talk to your healthcare provider or a physical therapist regarding the best exercises for your needs. The CDC recommends adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per week.

The contemporary MorningStar of Littleton senior living community offers 65 assisted living suites along with 20 suites devoted to Alzheimer’s care in our distinct Reflections Neighborhood. Floorplans include a choice of studios or one- and two-bedrooms and are equipped with handicapped-accessible bathrooms, emergency call systems and kitchenettes. Protect Yourself from Medicare Fraud

April 25, 2025 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Statistics from the National Council on Aging (NCOA) and other sources estimate Medicare loses approximately $60 billion annually to fraud, errors, and abuse. Experts caution anyone on Medicare is at risk for fraudulent charges and examples include:

  • Billing for services or supplies that were not provided

  • Providing unsolicited supplies to beneficiaries

  • Misrepresenting a diagnosis, a beneficiary’s identity, the service provided, or other facts to justify payment

  • Prescribing or providing excessive or unnecessary tests and services

  • Violating the participating provider agreement with Medicare by refusing to bill Medicare for covered services or items and billing the beneficiary instead

  • Offering or receiving a kickback (bribe) in exchange for a beneficiary’s Medicare number

  • Requesting Medicare numbers at an educational presentation or in an unsolicited phone call

  • Routinely waiving co-insurance or deductibles

Experts say fraudulent schemes are growing and there aren’t enough agents to keep up. The Office of Inspector General (OIG), which investigates Medicare fraud, works with a staff of approximately 450 agents for the whole country.

If you are on Medicare, you can help prevent some of the fraud as many schemes target beneficiaries directly by stealing their identities or enlisting them as unwitting accomplices. Medicare.gov advises seniors to start by protecting their Medicare card like they would a credit card. This includes not giving out the number to anyone other than your healthcare provider or other people you know should have it. In addition, they say it is important to check your Medicare Summary Notices (MSNs) or claims statements carefully. If you see a charge for a service you didn’t get or a product you didn’t order, it could be fraud. If you suspect fraud, report it at 1-800-MEDICARE.

Using a Walker Can Lower Fall Risk

April 07, 2025 by Quinn A in Senior Living

If you are at the point in life where you are not as stable as you used to be, have balance problems, arthritis or leg weakness; a mobility aid such as a walker could help keep you moving and lessen your chance of a fall. The first thing to do is work with a physical therapist or your healthcare provider to discuss the best type of walker for your personal needs and comfort. There are several fit points to consider as well as styles.

One common choice is a standard walker with four rubber-tipped legs and no wheels. Experts say it provides the most stability but has the drawback of having to pick it up to move. Other choices include walkers with wheels. A two-wheel walker has wheels on the front and can be helpful for those who have trouble picking up a standard walker. Four–wheel walkers may help those very unsteady on their feet but can be a bit less stable. This type of walker has the option of a seat for those that need to rest often.

Another important step in getting the proper walker is the height of the arms. The Mayo Clinic suggests stepping into the walker with your shoulders relaxed and upright. Elbows should be able to comfortably bend at 15 degrees. Other tips include remembering to stand upright when using them as it is easier on your back, and to move one step at a time. Step into the walker with each step rather than walking behind it.

Use caution when using a walker on a slippery or wet surface, and even carpet requires extra care. Just as you do when you are walking on your own, be sure to wear sensible low-heeled shoes that fit well and have good grips on the soles.

Add-ons and various options make walkers more convenient. Fold-up models allow them to be easily transported. Attachable bags and baskets ensure you can carry items you need while keeping hands-free to concentrate on safely moving the walker. Other options include trays for drinks or meals and seats.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, we have 45 private suites for assisted living and another 19 suites for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. For your safety all suites are equipped with a handicapped accessible bathroom and an emergency call system.  Residents enjoy healthy, delicious meals, luxury amenities, wellness programs and built-in companionship.  We are committed to providing outstanding senior living in Colorado Springs and invite you to set up a tour to see our beautiful community.

Lower Your Type 2 Diabetes Risk by Limiting Ultra-Processed Foods

April 02, 2025 by Quinn A in Senior Living

While there is a lot of data on how lifestyle habits impact our health, a study published last year reinforces a link between ultra-processed foods and the increase in a person’s risk for type 2 diabetes. The study from the University College London analyzed the intake of ultra-processed foods and health outcomes in more than 310,000 Europeans over a period of ten years.

This deserves attention as our country’s research shows “about 60% of daily caloric intake for Americans comes from consuming ultra-processed foods.” Moreover, according to the CDC, the number of Americans with diabetes or prediabetes continues to rise. They state 38.7 million people or 11.6 percent of the population has diabetes, and another 97.6 million people aged 18 years or older (38 percent of the adult U.S. population) has prediabetes.

Researchers say the problem with ultra-processed foods is they include additives and/or industrial processed and novel types of fats, proteins and carbs a home cook wouldn’t use. Samuel Dicken, BA Hons (Cantab.), MSc, clinical scientist and doctoral researcher at the Centre for Obesity Research in the Division of Medicine at University College London, and lead author of the study explained to Medical News Today, “Ultra-processed foods are everywhere, they’re highly accessible, cheap, convenient, and heavily marketed.” He says just take a look at grocery shelves filled with ultra-processed foods like breakfast cereals, snacks, plant-based alternatives and sugary drinks.

Despite the study showing the more ultra-processed food a person consumed, the higher the risk for developing type 2 diabetes; the study also had good news. It reported participants who altered their diet by replacing 10 percent of ultra-processed foods with 10 percent of minimally processed foods reduced their diabetes risk by 8%.

Experts say to improve our diet; we should eat more fruits and vegetables, limit drive-through meals and cook healthy meals at home. Also, when grocery shopping, read labels; the longer the list, the more likely it is ultra-processed regardless of claims of low fat or high fiber.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, we pride ourselves on offering residents daily meals that are full of fresh ingredients from high quality producers.  Our delicious meals are prepared largely from scratch and feature foods known to support brain health by their high concentrations of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds.     Our beautiful home offers 45 stylish suites for assisted living and another 19 suites devoted to the individualized care of residents with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.  Visit our website to see what sets our community apart from other senior living Colorado Springs offers and why MorningStar is a great place to call home.

Heart Disease Awareness Month

March 31, 2025 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Each February, Heart Disease Awareness Month is observed to raise awareness about heart disease, the leading cause of death worldwide. Along with promoting awareness of this largely preventable disease, it shows people how to take steps to protect their heart health. It also seeks to make awareness of how the disease disproportionally targets certain communities.

During the month, the National Heart, Blood and Lung Institute (NHBLI) encourages Americans to take the steps to adopt healthy lifestyle habits to prevent heart disease. These steps do not only improve heart health but help to prevent or alleviate the impact of other conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure. NHBLI says the practice of heart health care can keep our hearts’ healthy.

One of the first steps is to get more exercise as experts warn inactive people are almost twice as likely to develop heart disease than active people. For the most benefit, they recommend aiming for at least 150 minutes each week. They also say it doesn’t matter how you split the time up. You can do 10-minute segments 3x a day for five days a week or whatever else works for you. The important thing is to get moving.

Other steps to heart health are learning to follow a healthy diet, getting enough sleep and not smoking. Setting up an appointment with your healthcare provider for an overall physical can provide essential information regarding your blood pressure, cholesterol, weight and blood sugar levels. Something else you can do to care for your heart health is to manage and/or reduce stress. Using all of this information can guide you to make better decisions regarding your own heart health and that of your family’s.

At the MorningStar of Littleton senior living community, we provide residents a healthy, vibrant lifestyle for carefree retirement years. Our assisted living Littleton offers 65 fashionable suites in a choice of studio and one-and-two-bedroom floorplans. MorningStar’s Executive Chef creates meals with flavor profiles that stimulate the senses and boost energy, and feature the freshest ingredients from high-quality producers, often locally sourced (sometimes from our own resident gardens). Communicating with a Loved One with Dementia

March 28, 2025 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia can come on slowly but as the disease progresses, a spouse or other family members may find themselves struggling to communicate with the person. It is important to remember while symptoms vary and every person’s progression differs depending on the stage and type of dementia they have, a sad reality is many families have difficulty finding effective ways to communicate.

Experts say the best piece of advice is to be “patient with ourselves as caregivers.” Like other challenges in life, it may require you to tailor your communication in a way that can help you connect with the person, while at the same time, respecting their dignity. However Carol Podgorski, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Rochester, warns, “Dementias are progressive and degenerative brain diseases that can last for over 10 years. Communication strategies vary by the stage of the disease as well as other factors, including language abilities, sensory function, relationship history with the person communicating, and even personality.”

Tips to more effectively communicate include speaking slowly and clearly; and then giving the person the time they need to reply back. Someone with dementia is much slower to process information as well as find the right words. Experts say conversation is best done in a quiet place without noises or distractions.

Another thing to pay attention to is your body language. As you give them time to answer, look them in the eye and silently project encouragement with friendly facial expressions. Nod in agreement as they go along. If they say something that is not realistic such as wondering why a deceased parent doesn’t visit, experts say “join the journey.” Rather than explain the person is dead, show them a picture of the person and suggest you can help them write a letter to their parents.

It is also easier to converse if you stay in the present than trying to ask them what they did this morning. In other words, don’t ask what they had for breakfast this morning but if they are hungry now. When the time comes that the disease has robbed them of speech, talk with them and not talk over them.

March 28, 2025 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Everyone lives a different life with different needs, concerns, and abilities. This is why our modern senior living communities focus on providing personalized care adopted to each resident to ensure proper support and independence. At MorningStar Senior Living West Des Moines, personalized care is at the heart of everything we do. We have created an assisted living community where every resident feels seen, valued, and supported, no matter what level of care they require.

What is Personalized Care?

Personalized care routines are developed for one individual based on their specific needs, preferences, health concerns, medications, abilities and goals while in senior living. Personalized care plans are individualized and custom-made for each resident at MorningStar Assisted Living Des Moines.

Personalized care plans ensure that each resident is receiving the correct level of care that is most beneficial to the senior. By providing individualized care, seniors experience more independence and autonomy while feeling supported to explore the things they’re passionate about in the safety of their assisted living home.

Team members, caregivers and managers at MorningStar are kept up-to-date with each resident file, equipping them with the knowledge to provide the best assisted care possible to every senior in the community.

Ever Evolving Care for Ever Changing Needs

One of the best benefits of personalized care plans is the flexibility. A senior’s needs will shift over time. As this change happens, senior living care should be able to adjust. This is why care plans should be regularly evaluated and adjusted to ensure residents continue to receive the right amount of support. Whether it’s increasing assistance with daily tasks or modifying medication routines, these changes are made thoughtfully, incorporating input from residents, their families, and healthcare providers.

Our Health Needs depend on Reliable Medical Information

March 26, 2025 by Quinn A in Senior Living

The Medical News Today cites recent surveys showing Americans are vulnerable to misinformation via social and mass market media as well as from friends and family. As this can include critical medical information, they warn while there is a fount of easily accessible content, there are things we can do to protect ourselves from inaccurate advice.

According to a 2024 survey from Healthline, more than half of American respondents said they got health information via social media, while another 32% said they turned to family, friends, and colleagues for health advice. To help empower us to make good medical decisions, Medical News Today spoke with Dawn Holford, PhD from the School of Psychological Science at the University of Bristol, U.K. who specializes in the psychology of communication and decision-making.

Holford suggests people double check information with more than one reliable source to look for consensus across the board. She also adamantly says it is up to medical new websites like Medical New Today to be extra diligent to ensure their information is correct. In terms of the consumer, she recommends using trusted governmental public health organizations as well as global ones like the World Health Organization. In addition, look for well-vetted independent sites and reach out to trusted healthcare providers.

Following her rule of thumb, Holford cautions to be on your guard. She explains, “If something seems to align to what you already believe — it may well be correct, but follow the same steps to verify it.”

Helping Mom or Dad Downsize to Community Living

March 24, 2025 by Quinn A in Senior Living

If your mom or dad has reached the time in their life where they need help with daily personal care activities, moving into a senior living community offering assisted living is the perfect solution. You will have peace of mind knowing their needs are being met and they are safe and comfortable.  However, as much of the task of helping them move will likely fall on your shoulders, you have probably begun to realize that paring back a lifetime’s worth of possessions is a bit overwhelming.  Not to worry, there are many good books on the topic as well as useful tips on the Internet.

Organizing experts caution that the job can be complicated and fraught with emotion because as you see a pile of stuff to sort through and toss; your parents see treasures and memories.  Begin by creating a list of things your parents will need at their new place (keep in mind the size) and adding in the treasured items and personal belongings they want to keep.  If something is hard for them to part with, help them to think of a family member or friend they would like to give it to.  Also, remind them if they sell the item, they can use the money toward something better suited for their new home such as a smaller couch or coffee table.

Now the experts recommend going from room to room and start sorting by keeping, tossing, or donating piles.  In addition, rather than always asking your parents what they want to keep or get rid of, pare down the selection, and then ask them yes or no questions.  Presorting items also helps to avoid keeping lots of multiple items.

By measuring the size of your parent’s new suite, you can create a floor plan to realistically show how well their furnishings will fit.  Include the amount of cupboards and storage space they will have to help you know how much is too much.  Remember you do not want the new place to be so crowded that they can barely move safely about.

Keep in mind that if your parent is moving into a community such as MorningStar of Wheat Ridge, you will be treated to meals created by our Executive Chef served in our full-service dining room.  Also, for your safety, our well-designed suites are equipped with a handicapped-accessible bathroom and emergency call system.  Please visit our website to learn more about MorningStar’s assisted living in Wheat Ridge, Colorado.

Social Activities Help Keep Seniors Happy and Healthy

March 06, 2025 by Quinn A in Senior Living

The National Institute on Aging explains that while eating healthily and exercising is important for seniors, socializing and participating in activities you enjoy can be just as beneficial. Being lonely or feeling isolated is not good for our health and well-being; and can lead to depression or anxiety.

Taking part in social activities can increase a person’s sense of purpose and give more meaning to their life. Whether it is starting a new hobby, renewing an old interest, or making the effort to spend more time with family or friends, being social and having an active lifestyle can benefit the mind, body and spirit.

The NIA reports on various studies that find seniors who participate in hobbies and other social activities may lower their risk for developing some health problems “including dementia, heart disease, stroke, and some types of cancer.” A longer lifespan is linked to those who say they are satisfied with life; and other studies show staying physically active and having purpose appears to keep seniors happier and less depressed.

Experts say when older adults are happier; they are more resilient and better able to cope with life’s various challenges. More research suggests seniors who routinely participate in physical or mental activities may have fewer memory problems; while other data finds creative activities such as dancing or listening to music may help with memory problems or dementia.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, residents enjoy participating in our many activities and wellness programs. We have something for everyone and our calendar includes activities to mentally, physically, socially and spiritually stimulate and engage. We also encourage residents to tap into their unique talents and experiences to lead special interest clubs themselves.

The Impact of Pets on Older Adults

March 03, 2025 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Study after study reports elderly people who are pet owners, say they are the better for it. According to a Forbes magazine article, the number one benefit pets provide older adults with is “unconditional love.”  A whopping eighty-three percent of surveyed participants agree, and another 73 percent said their pet makes them feel loved. The good feelings pets give to seniors were even high in those who live with others.

Other surveys of seniors found pets gave them a sense of purpose. Others said they derived joy just from interacting with a pet even if they didn’t own it. Some seniors expressed that they enjoy having a pet visit their home or interacting with one while visiting family or friends.

In terms of what animals were most popular, dogs were a somewhat higher choice than cats; but some seniors had both. Experts say most people other than someone with very limited mobility can become dog owners. However, before you make a commitment to a dog; it makes sense to research breeds that do not require a lot of exercise. To this end, it might be better to adopt an older dog rather than try to raise a puppy. Smaller dogs are generally considered easier and there are several breeds known to be low-maintenance, easy to train and only require a daily walk.

By their nature and their needs, cats are typically much easier than dogs. They are wonderful companions and don’t need to be walked. If you dislike the idea of pet hair around the house, opt for a short-haired cat. Most cats are pretty independent, can live inside, and are quieter than dogs. Generally they only need to interact with their owners twenty or thirty minutes a day. Other pets suitable for seniors are birds, reptiles and fish.

Sometimes being a pet owner is one of the things that make older adults reluctant to move to a senior living community. At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, we know seniors do not want to leave behind their furry friends so we welcome pets.

MorningStar provides residents with a comfortable, inviting home where they can safely age in place. Our services, amenities and wellness programs are all geared toward accomplishing this. Residents also receive the often-overlooked benefits of community living such as healthy social connections and peace of mind knowing loving support is available whenever they need it. Worried it Might be Alzheimer’s?

February 26, 2025 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Since it is true our brains may not function as well as they did when we were younger, not all brain changes are a sign of Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related diseases. It may simply be a sign that as our bodies move slower with age, so do our brains.

A recent AARP article highlighted memory problems that can be a part of normal aging as well as problems that should be brought to the attention of your healthcare provider. One example discussed was the difference between getting lost or confused in a familiar location as opposed to getting lost the first time you go to a new place. Experts say the former is concerning and could be a sign of a problem as it goes beyond normal aging. Also if you find yourself forgetting where you are at times or how you got there, tell your doctor.

Another worrying sign can be repeating the same story or asking the same questions over and over again. The person probably doesn’t remember repeating themselves; if they did, they wouldn’t do it. This is why if a spouse or friend tells you are constantly repeating yourself, add it to the list to mention to your doctor.

Forgetting appointments can be normal when it happens once in a while but concerning if it happens all the time. Moreover there is a difference between forgetting a planned activity until reminded about it or forgetting the activity was ever planned in the first place. Other signs it could be dementia include not being able to complete tasks you used to do or not being able to multi-task like you once did.

Normal forgetfulness includes things like forgetting a person’s name and then remembering it later; or not sure what day it is but later it comes to you that it is Sunday. In addition as the brain’s processing speed begins to slow down, it is normal to take a longer time to learn something new.

The MorningStar of Littleton Assisted Living and Memory Care community is designed to provide carefree retirement years and includes a myriad of hospitality and senior care services, best-in-class dining and luxury amenities. Our signature wellness programs and activities enhance mental, physical, spiritual, and social connections.
