Our Health Needs depend on Reliable Medical Information

March 26, 2025 by Quinn A in Senior Living

The Medical News Today cites recent surveys showing Americans are vulnerable to misinformation via social and mass market media as well as from friends and family. As this can include critical medical information, they warn while there is a fount of easily accessible content, there are things we can do to protect ourselves from inaccurate advice.

According to a 2024 survey from Healthline, more than half of American respondents said they got health information via social media, while another 32% said they turned to family, friends, and colleagues for health advice. To help empower us to make good medical decisions, Medical News Today spoke with Dawn Holford, PhD from the School of Psychological Science at the University of Bristol, U.K. who specializes in the psychology of communication and decision-making.

Holford suggests people double check information with more than one reliable source to look for consensus across the board. She also adamantly says it is up to medical new websites like Medical New Today to be extra diligent to ensure their information is correct. In terms of the consumer, she recommends using trusted governmental public health organizations as well as global ones like the World Health Organization. In addition, look for well-vetted independent sites and reach out to trusted healthcare providers.

Following her rule of thumb, Holford cautions to be on your guard. She explains, “If something seems to align to what you already believe — it may well be correct, but follow the same steps to verify it.”

Helping Mom or Dad Downsize to Community Living

March 24, 2025 by Quinn A in Senior Living

If your mom or dad has reached the time in their life where they need help with daily personal care activities, moving into a senior living community offering assisted living is the perfect solution. You will have peace of mind knowing their needs are being met and they are safe and comfortable.  However, as much of the task of helping them move will likely fall on your shoulders, you have probably begun to realize that paring back a lifetime’s worth of possessions is a bit overwhelming.  Not to worry, there are many good books on the topic as well as useful tips on the Internet.

Organizing experts caution that the job can be complicated and fraught with emotion because as you see a pile of stuff to sort through and toss; your parents see treasures and memories.  Begin by creating a list of things your parents will need at their new place (keep in mind the size) and adding in the treasured items and personal belongings they want to keep.  If something is hard for them to part with, help them to think of a family member or friend they would like to give it to.  Also, remind them if they sell the item, they can use the money toward something better suited for their new home such as a smaller couch or coffee table.

Now the experts recommend going from room to room and start sorting by keeping, tossing, or donating piles.  In addition, rather than always asking your parents what they want to keep or get rid of, pare down the selection, and then ask them yes or no questions.  Presorting items also helps to avoid keeping lots of multiple items.

By measuring the size of your parent’s new suite, you can create a floor plan to realistically show how well their furnishings will fit.  Include the amount of cupboards and storage space they will have to help you know how much is too much.  Remember you do not want the new place to be so crowded that they can barely move safely about.

Keep in mind that if your parent is moving into a community such as MorningStar of Wheat Ridge, you will be treated to meals created by our Executive Chef served in our full-service dining room.  Also, for your safety, our well-designed suites are equipped with a handicapped-accessible bathroom and emergency call system.  Please visit our website to learn more about MorningStar’s assisted living in Wheat Ridge, Colorado.

Health Disease and Women

March 19, 2025 by Quinn A in senior apartments

Despite a long-held belief that more men are affected by and even die from heart disease, the American Health Association says we now know that is only half the story. Recent studies show more women die from heart disease than from all forms of cancer. Perimenopause and post-menopausal women are at the most risk from heart disease, and the older they get, the higher the risk. Doctors say the drop in estrogen that occurs in women during and after menopause is why older women have a higher risk for cardiovascular disease.

Robin Noble, MD, a board-certified OB/GYN, explains before menopause, estrogen has a vasodilatory effect on the vascular system. This anti-inflammatory effect fights against the development of the type of inflammation that causes cardiovascular plaques. Once a woman’s body experiences a drop in estrogen, it creates problems such as higher cholesterol levels, higher blood pressure and an increase in visceral fat – all linked to plaque buildup and hardening of the arteries.

The Medical News Today’s experts weigh-in on what post-menopausal women can do to protect their health. The top recommendation involves adopting a healthy lifestyle such as increasing exercise, managing stress, maintaining a healthy weight and eating a more plant-based diet. Moderating your alcohol consumption and not smoking are also important.

If you are at risk for cardiovascular disease or already living with it, you need to work with your healthcare providers. In addition to adopting healthier lifestyle habits, one course of treatment is hormone-replacement therapy (HRT). It can be an effective way to reduce the risk of heart disease at this time of life.

At MorningStar of Wheat Ridge, we provide seniors carefree retirement years with trusted senior apartments and memory care. Comforting a Friend Who is Grieving

March 17, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Many of us have watched a good friend go through the grieving process after losing a loved one and have been frustrated by not being able to do more to comfort them. Experts explain this is a common feeling and provide some suggestions to help.

One of the first things to remember is everyone experiences grief in their own way. Heather L. McGinty, assistant professor in the department of psychiatry and behavioral health at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, explains grief triggers a range of emotions, sensations and behaviors and can be complex.

A person’s emotions may swing from tearfulness to anger or denial, and as a friend, it can be hard to know what to say. Loneliness, betrayal, fear and acceptance are some of the other emotions grief brings up. Some people even experience physical symptoms such as headaches or stomachaches.

If you want to help, grief counselors say to first make sure the person wants it; and recommend asking if they want the type of support you hope to offer, such as spending time with them. Some people are very private and prefer to grieve in their own way. The most important thing is to be supportive of their wishes and be prepared to listen rather than hand out advice. Also, be specific like letting them know you want to take them to lunch when they are ready, or bring over a meal, run errands or do some yardwork.

Experts say avoid telling the person you know how they feel. Again, everyone experiences grief differently. Even if you don’t understand the way the person is acting out their grief, be supportive not judgmental. Lastly, don’t say things like “everything happens for a reason” or “they are in a better place.” If you think they would benefit from professional support, be sure to encourage it.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, our beautiful home is designed from the ground up to serve our residents’ every need. Our community offers stylish apartments in a range of configurations and floor plans.  Residents enjoy carefree retirement years as we handle the maintenance and provide onsite amenities, all-day dining, and a community of friends. MorningStar at Mountain Shadows Welcomes Couples

March 14, 2025 by Quinn A in Senior Living Communities

When a couple’s health experiences are different, and one is healthier than the other, that person may assume the role of caregiver. As time evolves, the needs of the chronically ill spouse may become more complex and require daily care. This can be difficult for the healthier spouse, and even impact his/her own health and well-being.

To ensure both parties have an opportunity for the best quality of life; and senior living communities may be the answer. While leaving a family home and transitioning to community life is a big change, the transition is easier for the person with a spouse or partner by their side. Marissa Kirby, NHA, CHC, CHPC, and vice president of compliance at NEWGEN HEALTH, LLC, explains, “In many cases, particularly when a couple has been married for many years, the ability to live together can make or break their decision on whether or not to move to an assisted living facility.”

Many senior living communities like MorningStar at Mountain Shadows welcome couples; where we not only expertly and compassionately address the needs of a person living with a chronic illness or disability but also the needs of the healthier spouse. MorningStar’s assisted living provides the maintenance-free environment of independent living with the addition of care services for the ADLs (activities of daily living) tailored to the resident. We offer an array of floor plans including studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom suites. Each suite is equipped with a kitchenette, a handicapped-accessible bathroom, a 24-hour emergency call system, and a private heating & air conditioning system.  Your monthly fee includes cable TV and utilities, weekly housekeeping and laundry and linen services.  We do trash removal and spot cleaning daily.  Moreover, if you are wondering, we are pet friendly!

Senior-friendly activities, resort-style amenities and built-in companionship can be a winning combination for many couples. In addition to assisted living, our Reflections Neighborhood has suites devoted to those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. Please contact us or visit our website for more information.

MorningStar has considered it a privilege and responsibility to “cast a new light” on senior living, inspired and empowered by our unique mission: to honor, to value, to invest. Living with Alzheimer’s Disease

March 12, 2025 by Quinn A in retirement communities

A diagnosis of Alzheimer’s brings with it a range of emotions. Learning that you have a disease with no cure and no way to control what is happening to you can create feelings of anger, denial, depression and resentment as well as fear.  Another common emotion is isolation and the feeling that no one else understands what you are going through.  There can even be a sense of relief at finding out what is happening to you and having those concerns validated.

The Alzheimer’s Association counsels that it helps to try and come to terms with your diagnosis and the emotions you are experiencing as a way to help you to move forward.  They explain that, “once you make the commitment to take care of your emotional needs; you may find that you can rise to the challenge and face your diagnosis.”

You will find helpful coping tips on their website to make it easier to deal with what you are going through.  One of their most important suggestions is to have good support whether it comes from joining a support group, sharing concerns with family and friends, or talking to a counselor or member of the clergy.  They also say to continue to do the activities you enjoy for as long as you are able.  Finally, they remind individuals to take time to “feel sad, mourn and grieve.”

Along with assisted living, MorningStar at Mountain Shadows in Colorado Springs offers compassionate and loving care to those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Our Reflections Neighborhood not only provides an atmosphere of safety and well-being but also encourages and supports choice and independence to the fullest extent possible.  Memory care residents participate in recreational and purposeful activities, including exercise, music, life skills and art, as well as outings and special events. Above all, MorningStar residents are treated with the utmost respect and dignity.

MorningStar is guided by a culture rooted in our mission of honoring God, valuing seniors, and investing in our team, which allows us to deliver services with warmth, sincerity and depth of purpose. Learn More About Pacemakers

March 10, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, the most common reason for a pacemaker is when the heart beats too slowly (bradycardia), or it pauses, causing fainting spells or other symptoms. The device also prevents or treats a too fast or irregular heartbeat (tachycardia). For patients with heart failure, a pacemaker is used to help the heart chambers beat in sync, and enable the heart to pump blood more efficiently.

Pacemakers use low-energy, electrical pulses to control the rate and rhythm of the heartbeat, and the type of pacemaker you get depends on your situation. A traditional pacemaker sends electrical pulses through wires (or leads). It is placed in the chest or abdomen; and wires are connected to electrodes inside one to three heart chambers. This type of pacemaker includes single- and double-lead pacemakers, or biventricular pacemakers also known as cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) devices.

A newer version of the pacemaker is a wireless pacemaker without wires, which is about the size of a large pill capsule. It is placed inside a chamber of your heart through a small tube inserted in one of your veins and doesn’t require surgery. The device sends pulses to the right ventricle. Typically the battery life of a pacemaker is between 8 and 13 years.

After the procedure, most patients spend a night in the hospital so doctors can make sure the device is staying in place, doing its job, and programmed correctly. You will be given a card with information regarding the device’s settings and the hospital where you got it, which needs to be always carried with you.

Once home or in assisted living, restrictions include not lifting heavy items or putting your arms over your head to avoid shifting the device or the wires. Your medical team will schedule a check-up over the next few weeks.

Living with a pacemaker includes avoiding close contact (at least 6” away) with devices having strong magnetic fields as they can disrupt your pacemaker. When using your cell phone, put it on speaker phone or hold it to the ear on the other side of your body from your device. Don’t put it in your shirt pocket. Household items like microwaves, electric blankets, and heating pads are usually safe if they are working properly. The risks of airport screening are low, but show your pacemaker card to be individually screened. Contact your doctor with questions and problems, and if you think your pacemaker has stopped working, contact them immediately.

This post is intended for informational purposes only.  Please contact your health care provider with any questions or concerns you have regarding your health.

Social Activities Help Keep Seniors Happy and Healthy

March 06, 2025 by Quinn A in Senior Living

The National Institute on Aging explains that while eating healthily and exercising is important for seniors, socializing and participating in activities you enjoy can be just as beneficial. Being lonely or feeling isolated is not good for our health and well-being; and can lead to depression or anxiety.

Taking part in social activities can increase a person’s sense of purpose and give more meaning to their life. Whether it is starting a new hobby, renewing an old interest, or making the effort to spend more time with family or friends, being social and having an active lifestyle can benefit the mind, body and spirit.

The NIA reports on various studies that find seniors who participate in hobbies and other social activities may lower their risk for developing some health problems “including dementia, heart disease, stroke, and some types of cancer.” A longer lifespan is linked to those who say they are satisfied with life; and other studies show staying physically active and having purpose appears to keep seniors happier and less depressed.

Experts say when older adults are happier; they are more resilient and better able to cope with life’s various challenges. More research suggests seniors who routinely participate in physical or mental activities may have fewer memory problems; while other data finds creative activities such as dancing or listening to music may help with memory problems or dementia.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, residents enjoy participating in our many activities and wellness programs. We have something for everyone and our calendar includes activities to mentally, physically, socially and spiritually stimulate and engage. We also encourage residents to tap into their unique talents and experiences to lead special interest clubs themselves.

Located in Colorado Springs close to I-25, medical facilities and other services, we offer 45 private assisted living suites in a variety of floor plans and configurations. The Search for an Assisted Living Community

March 05, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

If you have started searching for assisted living for a parent, you know it can be overwhelming.  You are probably looking for a place that fits their budget, care needs, and lifestyle preferences.  Moreover, you know it is not a decision to make lightly as you will not want to move mom or dad again after just a few months.  That is why the experts suggest that if the circumstances allow you should take your time.

The Internet has several checklists and suggestions on what to look for when searching for assisted living communities including questions to ask when talking to the staff.  One thing everyone agrees on is that it is a good idea to take a tour of the community.

Questions you will want to ask include suite sizes and configurations, pricing information and availability.  If you plan to have both of your parents move in, ask if they can share a suite.  Also, if applicable, find out if the community supports Companion Living (where two people of the same sex share a suite).

You will also want to learn more about the care services your loved one will receive. How is the level of care determined?  Will they have access to care 24/7?  How close is the community to medical care facilities and how are medical emergencies handled? Are nurses available and if so, how often?  What is the staff-to-resident ratio and do the staff receive special training?  Do any of the caregivers have CPR training?

In addition, ask about programs and activities available to residents.  If possible, get a calendar of events to review later.  Also, ask about the dining experience.  Are meals offered all day?  Is the dining room full service?  Can a resident have meals delivered to their suite?  If your parents have diet restrictions, find out if they can be accommodated.

Location is another thing to consider as you will want a community that is convenient for family and friends to visit.  Be sure to ask if you will be allowed to visit at any time or if there is a set schedule when residents can receive visitors.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, we look forward to answering all your questions.  Our dedicated team works hard to give our residents a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community second to none.  Our beautiful home offers outstanding assisted living in Colorado Springs with a wide range of luxury amenities, wellness programs and activities. In addition, our Reflections Neighborhood provides care to those with memory impairment.

MorningStar’s foundation is based on the mission to honor God, value seniors and invest in our staff to create a unique senior living experience.  Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, we provide the finest assisted living Colorado Springs has to offer.  Please contact our team to inquire about availability, pricing or to set up a tour.

The Impact of Pets on Older Adults

March 03, 2025 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Study after study reports elderly people who are pet owners, say they are the better for it. According to a Forbes magazine article, the number one benefit pets provide older adults with is “unconditional love.”  A whopping eighty-three percent of surveyed participants agree, and another 73 percent said their pet makes them feel loved. The good feelings pets give to seniors were even high in those who live with others.

Other surveys of seniors found pets gave them a sense of purpose. Others said they derived joy just from interacting with a pet even if they didn’t own it. Some seniors expressed that they enjoy having a pet visit their home or interacting with one while visiting family or friends.

In terms of what animals were most popular, dogs were a somewhat higher choice than cats; but some seniors had both. Experts say most people other than someone with very limited mobility can become dog owners. However, before you make a commitment to a dog; it makes sense to research breeds that do not require a lot of exercise. To this end, it might be better to adopt an older dog rather than try to raise a puppy. Smaller dogs are generally considered easier and there are several breeds known to be low-maintenance, easy to train and only require a daily walk.

By their nature and their needs, cats are typically much easier than dogs. They are wonderful companions and don’t need to be walked. If you dislike the idea of pet hair around the house, opt for a short-haired cat. Most cats are pretty independent, can live inside, and are quieter than dogs. Generally they only need to interact with their owners twenty or thirty minutes a day. Other pets suitable for seniors are birds, reptiles and fish.

Sometimes being a pet owner is one of the things that make older adults reluctant to move to a senior living community. At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, we know seniors do not want to leave behind their furry friends so we welcome pets.

MorningStar provides residents with a comfortable, inviting home where they can safely age in place. Our services, amenities and wellness programs are all geared toward accomplishing this. Residents also receive the often-overlooked benefits of community living such as healthy social connections and peace of mind knowing loving support is available whenever they need it. Please contact us or visit our website for more information about MorningStar’s assisted living or memory care in Colorado Springs.

Do Your Parents have a Fear of Assisted Living?

February 28, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Way too often older adults have a fear about assisted living that is based on misinformation. While we acknowledge a big change for a senior as it may mean leaving behind a beloved family home, it doesn’t mean an end to their privacy and independence. If the time has come when a parent may be safer and better cared for by the many services offered by assisted living, adult children can be supportive by getting the facts.

Most communities offer private suites in a range of configurations. At MorningStar of Littleton, our 65 assisted living suites are located over three-stories in studio and one-and-two-bedroom configurations. Residents have a choice of size and location preferences in smartly-designed studios ranging from 327 to 475 square feet to our largest two-bedroom units from 704 to 730 square feet. Each apartment has its own door and a lock; and is the resident’s very own cozy sanctuary. If a parent’s fear is losing their independence, let them know the goal of our community is to provide the services needed to maintain their independence and to get them back to living life on their own terms.

Another fear many seniors have of assisted living is they think it is too expensive. The truth is they may not have factored in all of the services and amenities provided by the community. Furthermore we believe there are many financial resources open to them beyond retirement savings and investments. To help explore options, MorningStar has partnered with “Financial Concierges” whose agents can educate you on the financial resources potentially out there to help pay for independent living, or memory care.

A person may also be reluctant to move to senior living as they are afraid their family and friends may forget about them. At MorningStar communities, we welcome visits from family and friends and provide adequate parking to ensure easy visits. Moreover, along with their own apartment to host visitors, we have plenty of relaxing, attractive common areas throughout our community both inside and out that are ideal for friendly visits.

Lastly some adults think community living means they are forced to participate in activities. While MorningStar of Littleton has a full array of meaningful and fun activities, no one is forced to participate. However we do remind a person they will be missed; and our activities are so diverse in interest we think you may find something you want to do.

To learn more about MorningStar of Littleton’s assisted living or memory care, we invite you to set up a personalized tour. We take great pride in providing trusted senior living Littleton, CO families count on. Our team looks forward to answering any questions you may have in regard to our or Alzheimer’s care.

Worried it Might be Alzheimer’s?

February 26, 2025 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Since it is true our brains may not function as well as they did when we were younger, not all brain changes are a sign of Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related diseases. It may simply be a sign that as our bodies move slower with age, so do our brains.

A recent AARP article highlighted memory problems that can be a part of normal aging as well as problems that should be brought to the attention of your healthcare provider. One example discussed was the difference between getting lost or confused in a familiar location as opposed to getting lost the first time you go to a new place. Experts say the former is concerning and could be a sign of a problem as it goes beyond normal aging. Also if you find yourself forgetting where you are at times or how you got there, tell your doctor.

Another worrying sign can be repeating the same story or asking the same questions over and over again. The person probably doesn’t remember repeating themselves; if they did, they wouldn’t do it. This is why if a spouse or friend tells you are constantly repeating yourself, add it to the list to mention to your doctor.

Forgetting appointments can be normal when it happens once in a while but concerning if it happens all the time. Moreover there is a difference between forgetting a planned activity until reminded about it or forgetting the activity was ever planned in the first place. Other signs it could be dementia include not being able to complete tasks you used to do or not being able to multi-task like you once did.

Normal forgetfulness includes things like forgetting a person’s name and then remembering it later; or not sure what day it is but later it comes to you that it is Sunday. In addition as the brain’s processing speed begins to slow down, it is normal to take a longer time to learn something new.

Muscle Loss in Seniors

February 24, 2025 by Quinn A in Memory care

The term sarcopenia refers to age-related muscle loss and is a natural part of growing older. However, it also may occur at a faster pace after prolonged periods of inactivity from injury, illness or the pain of osteoarthritis. Sarcopenia causes muscle atrophy and brings problems such as poor balance and greater weakness, which in turn can result in more inactivity and increased risks for falls.

Seniors with muscle atrophy may have difficulty reaching their arms upward, opening jars, typing on a keyboard or even tying shoes.  The Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine reports on a study that found “older men who did eight weeks of strength training lost about 25% of their muscle gains after they stopped training for two weeks.”

Jodi Klein, a physical therapist at Harvard’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital, suggests a few things you can do if you know you have a surgical procedure ahead of you that could cause muscle atrophy. She says if you are currently active, keep it up; if not, use this time to get started.  Klein explains, “The better shape you are in going into surgery, the better shape you will be coming out, and the less chance you have of enduring muscle loss.”

Older adults who want to regain muscle strength should talk to their health care provider about the best methods. Experts recommend an exercise routine that builds both upper and lower body strength. This could include weight training with dumbbells and resistance bands in conjunction with walking, swimming, and biking. If it would be helpful, think about turning to an expert to aid you in regaining strength.

A Mediterranean Diet May Help Stave Off Cognitive Decline

February 24, 2025 by Quinn A in Alzheimers Care

The Medical New Today recently published an article from Gut Microbes Reports, which suggests “that not only did the Mediterranean diet change gut microbiota and improve serum lipid levels; it also improved memory and cognition.” The study reported a link between improved memory and learning after “participants” followed a Mediterranean diet, which emphasizes plants, whole grains and healthy fats.

The 20 week study’s participants were 10-week-old rats who half were fed a traditional Western diet and the other half a Mediterranean diet.  Researchers say at the end of the study, rats fed a Mediterranean diet had better cognitive flexibility and improved aspects of spatial reference and working memory. The improvements correlated with a healthier gut microbiota.

Scott Kaiser, MD, a board-certified geriatrician at Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, CA, who was not involved in this study, told Medical News Today: “A growing body of evidence clearly supports a strong correlation between diet and brain health. While this study, and other related cornerstone studies in this field, may not be designed to specifically establish causation there are many clear causal pathways and plausible biological mechanisms that support the likelihood that various diets and nutritional factors may either be protective of our brain health or accelerate cognitive decline and otherwise impact our mental well-being.”

Medical New Today suggests while there may not be an absolute connection between better dietary habits and cognitive decline, much of the research from the last several years speaks to the fact 2025 may be the time to adopt better lifestyle habits. They explain a number of studies show nutrition; exercise and sleep can improve overall health including brain and heart health.

Assisted Living Provides an Environment for Seniors to Thrive

February 21, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Way too often people have misconceptions about senior living communities and specifically assisted living. They think of the nursing facility where their grandparents may have spent their last years and don’t want to put themselves or an older loved one into something like that. After all, haven’t we all earned a happy retirement?

Today’s assisted living communities are just that – a community. They provide an engaged lifestyle, safety and the proper support a person needs to help maintain their independence. Many also offer resort-style amenities like all-day, full-service dining; housekeeping, fitness centers, salons, bistros and in-house theatres and chapels to give seniors a vibrant community to safely age in place.

Furthermore, many older adults living alone say they feel socially isolated and lonely, which can put them at an increased risk for depression, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and more. When seniors move to an assisted living community such as MorningStar of Wheat Ridge, they have opportunities to engage in wellness programs, activities and special events. Examples from MorningStar’s monthly calendar include Fitness with Forrest, Indoor Walking Club, Short Stories Book Club, Trivia W/ Professor David, Live Music with Steve Clement, Creative Crafters: Tote Bag Designs, Bible Study and more. Seniors also find it easier to eat healthy as they no longer need to shop, prepare, cook and clean-up meals.

Another reason assisted living can make sense is that seniors find their current home requires expensive modifications to make it safe for them. Throughout MorningStar’s community, the physical environment is designed to help residents stay safe and prevent falls. Suites are equipped with handicapped-accessible bathrooms and 24/7 emergency call systems; and have lots of lighting and large windows. Dedicated care managers are always available to lend a hand when needed, and provide compassionate help with the ADLs (activities of daily living).

Cost Considerations of Senior Care Options

February 19, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

An article in the US News & World Report finds moving mom or dad to an assisted living community may be a bargain compared to paying for extensive in-home care. With an average cost of $25 to $27 an hour, in-home care can add up fast. For example, if you want someone with mom or dad while you are at work nine hours a day for five days a week, you are already spending $4,500 or more a month. This still leaves your parents without support on the weekends, and doesn’t include any support for problems which may occur during the evening and overnight.

An assisted living community includes room and board and housekeeping services as well as a variety of wellness programs and activities. It also has 24/7 staffing and suites with emergency call systems, handicapped-accessible bathrooms and other modifications.

If a family feels assisted living would be the best place for a parent but the cost is holding them back, experts say to thoroughly research all available payment options. This can include long-term care insurance and some private health insurance; or social programs such those offered by Veterans Affairs or Social Security Disability Insurance. A San Francisco based executive VP for A Place for Mom, Sue Johansen, suggests families consult with a financial advisor or a trust attorney.

Remember, once you find the assisted living community you want, ask about the difference in pricing regarding room size or floor plan, and/or location in the community (view, balcony, etc.). You will need to factor in annual increases so be sure to ask what those have been over the last couple of years. Also, does the community require a deposit, move-in fee or community fees; and what type of notice does your parent need to give to move out?

At MorningStar Assisted Living of Wheat Ridge, we are happy to answer all your questions. To get you started, our website offers lots of details regarding suites, activities and amenities as well as a whole list of answers to FAQs. Visual and Spatial Issues are Common With Alzheimer’s Disease

February 17, 2025 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Most of us are familiar with the forgetfulness and confusion Alzheimer’s disease causes. Especially in the early stages, family and friends start noticing the person is constantly repeating themselves and/or forgetting where they put things. However, experts say there are other commonly occurring signs of a serious problem.

One of those early warning signs can be having trouble navigating and even getting lost in familiar places. A decline in spatial awareness as well as vision problems can cause a person in the early stages of Alzheimer’s to become confused in new places and have trouble identifying objects and people.

Spatial and visual issues may include looking at an object and not seeing it clearly for what it is. Examples could be a person sees a blue floor as water or a dark spot in a rug as a hole in the floor. They may be unable to tell if their house is to the left of them or to judge distances accurately. Some people may mistake their child for their spouse or another relative.

These misconceptions and misidentifications are caused by damage to the neurons, which are “cells in your brain that communicate with each other and with the rest of your body. Alzheimer’s causes damage to neurons.”  Researchers say they are not sure if the problems are due to impairment to the spatial reasoning part of the brain or damage to the temporal and parietal lobes.

There are things caregivers can do to help a person navigate their surroundings more easily such as removing clutter from the person’s living space and labeling items. Keeping things in the same place is another helpful tip as habit is a strong instinct. If you are out with the person and they look confused or frightened, stop what you are doing, and calmly explain where you are as well as listen to their perspective of what they are feeling.

Along with assisted living, MorningStar at Mountain Shadows provides individualized care for those suffering from Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. Keep Your Brain Sharp With Games and Puzzles

February 14, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

While there is a long-held belief that memory loss and aging are inevitable, it is now known we can help keep our brains sharp. Studies have shown our brains continue to build new connections, and engaging in activities that challenge us can lead to sustained brain development and offer new ways to approach challenges.

The most effective puzzles and games linked to a reduced risk of dementia are those requiring critical thinking, problem-solving and memory recall. Patrick Porter, Ph.D, a neuroscience expert and founder of BrainTap, explains “These activities stimulate the brain by challenging it to find patterns, make connections, and think creatively. They require mental flexibility and encourage the brain to adapt and reorganize neural networks, enhancing cognitive reserve.”

To get the most benefit from mental activities, the experts say it is best to vary the type of games we play. Shifting from games that rely on speed, rapid decision making or memory help strengthen and tap into multiple ways to engage the brain. Studies show it is important to keep challenging ourselves and pushing the bar toward more difficult activities. Another thing to keep in mind are the studies linking socialization to a decrease in dementia. So before you jump on the computer for some brain games, think about gathering a group of friends to play a game of trivia or piece together a puzzle.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, we offer outstanding assisted living in Colorado Springs. Suites are available in a variety of contemporary floorplans which are equipped with a handicapped-accessible bathroom, emergency call system and private heating and cooling. We provide residents comprehensive care services along with luxury amenities, wellness programs and activities to enhance quality of life.
