Find Senior Living in Des Moines With Core Values

September 27, 2023 by Quinn A in Senior Living

The senior living community you pick to live out your retirement years should have the same deeply held values that align with your comfort and safety. You can find the best senior living Des Moines has to call your future home. MorningStar Senior Living emphasizes relationships, empathy, and independence under a three-pillar mission designed by Ken Jaeger.

If you are deciding to move into senior living or assisted living, take the time to thoroughly research senior living in Des Moines that will illuminate the standards and level of care you expect while creating a spiritually loving environment.

A senior living facility should have the same morals and values you support. Ken Jaeger, Founder and CEO of MorningStar Senior Living, believed in senior care that was defined by the human touch. He looked towards his familiar roots and wanted to re-create his grandmother’s house, a place where one can go and feel a sense of family. Ken developed a three-pillar mission to keep MorningStar grounded in empathy and trust. In these three pillars, caregivers and team members of MorningStar abide by the commitment to retain strong moral values and ethics. The community commits to creating an environment that promotes healthy, engaging lifestyles while providing up-to-date security and encouraging independence.

As an entity, MorningStar’s final pillar commits to hiring and retaining employees who are
creative, selfless, and compassionate. Since its first year of service, MorningStar developed a
deep and lasting impression on its community. They are a radically relational, senior-loving
home where residents are seen as heroes. MorningStar sees its worth as more than just a
business. As a senior living facility for people aged 55 and up, Morningstar vows to create a
legacy of benevolence that changes lives.

MorningStar Assisted Living Des Moines provides high-quality care and safety assurances for seniors, making it an excellent choice for families seeking a safe and secure senior living community. Assisted Living Offers A Lifestyle of Comfort, Wellness, Community

September 27, 2023 by Quinn A in Assisted Living Community

If you still think assisted living is an “old person’s home,” you could not be more mistaken. Today’s assisted living communities are a far cry from old-fashioned facilities like nursing homes, and offer seniors a vibrant lifestyle of comfort, wellness, and community. As a resident, you have opportunities to grow, learn and contribute.

Skilled nursing facilities (SNF) had their beginnings decades ago as “nursing homes,” and in a time when there were few other options for senior care. Today SNF typically focus on short-term rehab including helping patients discharged from the hospital after surgery or illness. SNF staff include RNs and CNAs, and specialize in serving residents in fragile and declining health.

Assisted living is designed to assist residents with the activities of daily living (ADLs) such as toileting, dressing, and bathing. However, assisted living communities like MorningStar of Wheat Ridge provide much more than just physical care.  Along with a wealth of amenities, activities and services, it is designed to feel like a real home.  MorningStar’s services help families by providing transportation to doctor appointments and other errands as well as onsite supportive services from third-party providers including physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy.  Residents have the opportunity for plenty of socializing and are encouraged to participate in a range of activities and wellness programs.

MorningStar’s services also include providing housekeeping to ensure residents’ homes are tidy and clean.  By taking care of meals, we help residents get the daily nutrition they need.  Moreover, meals are served restaurant-style in our beautiful dining room as we believe breaking bread together provides far more than physical nutrients but bonds us as family and friends.  We also help with another common problem many seniors experience when living alone, which is forgetting to or improperly taking medications.  We solve this by offering medication management services.

Please contact us for more information about the finest senior living in Wheat Ridge, CO.  Our beautiful community has 45 stylish suites for assisted living and another 19 suites devoted to the individualized care of residents with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.

MorningStar is guided by a culture rooted in our mission of honoring God, valuing seniors, and investing in our team, which allows us to deliver services with warmth, sincerity and depth of purpose. We have built a reputation for creating homes filled with an atmosphere of love and community. Please contact us to learn more about the finest senior living in Wheat Ridge, CO.

The Benefits of Holistic Memory Care for Seniors

September 27, 2023 by Quinn A in Memory care

Holistic memory care options for seniors with Alzheimer’s are becoming increasingly helpful in remedying symptoms associated with Alzheimer’s and dementia. Holistic memory care has been shown to improve outcomes for seniors with dementia and provide them with the highest quality of life possible. By exploring all the Assisted Living options Littleton CO offers, you can be sure you’re making the right choice in Alzheimer’s care for a senior loved one struggling with a memory loss diagnosis.

Holistic Vs. Traditional Memory Care

Holistic memory care can be found in assisted living communities that focus on a person-centered approach to senior care. This means diet, exercise, therapy, lifestyle changes, and relaxation techniques are all considered for optimal senior care.

Traditional memory care relies mainly on medications to manage symptoms and behaviors.

Assisted Living communities that utilize holistic memory care address all aspects of the individual’s well-being, focusing on their strengths, not pitfalls. Providing personalized care, promoting a positive environment, and offering a team approach have improved outcomes for seniors with memory loss.

Unlike traditional memory care approaches, holistic memory care offered at assisted living communities like MorningStar emphasizes the individual’s strengths and abilities. A specialized care plan is tailored to individual needs, interests, and skills.

Seniors receiving holistic memory care in assisted living maintain a sense of identity and independence for as long as possible while also receiving an appropriate level of care. Alzheimer’s: Stages and Treatment in Seniors

September 25, 2023 by Quinn A in Alzheimer’s care

When families receive an Alzheimer’s diagnosis for their parent or loved one, it’s understandable for them to feel a little lost and overwhelmed. When confronting this new change, it’s essential to be familiar with the stages and possible treatments for seniors seeking Alzheimer’s care. If you are exploring all the memory care options in senior living Littleton Co. Consider MorningStar of Littleton to help you find excellent Alzheimer’s care near you.

Alzheimer’s disease is usually seen in three stages:

  • Mild: A person with mild Alzheimer’s symptoms may still be able to function in professional and social activities, but they may have difficulty with some tasks involving their memory and communication.

  • Moderate: Moderate Alzheimer’s symptoms involve significant memory loss, confusion, and physical symptoms. At this stage, it becomes harder for the person to recognize family members and friends, follow instructions, or carry out daily tasks and errands.

  • Severe: At this stage, a person will need help with everyday tasks and care. They may experience incontinence, have difficulty eating, and become unaware of their environment and familiar people.

It is important to remember that Alzheimer’s symptoms present in all individuals differently. Seniors may experience these stages at different rates throughout their elder years. Finding all-inclusive senior care with person-centered approaches to memory care is the best option for memory care.

Treatment Options

Currently, no treatment or medication can cure dementia or Alzheimer’s. However, that doesn’t stop specialists from trying to mediate symptoms. While there is no cure for Dementia, you can find Alzheimer’s care options in the best senior living Littleton Co offers.

MorningStar of Littleton has been named “Alzheimer’s Association Leader in Dementia Care.” The Alzheimer’s Association established a program called “Recognized Leaders in Dementia Care.” To be so designated, a senior living community must enroll 75% of its staff in an eight-hour training that encompasses brain pathology, communication techniques, and methods of lessening agitation with non-pharmaceuticals. Colorado is the only Alzheimer’s Association chapter in the country offering this unique program. MorningStar of Littleton is proud to have earned this special recognition of our expertise in serving the memory impaired.

Reducing the Risk of a Fall

September 25, 2023 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that each year, one out of every five Americans aged 65 years and older has a fall that results in an injury such as broken bones or a head injury.  However, medical professionals say while it is important for seniors to take precautions to prevent falls as injuries can be serious, they also remind us that regardless of how old we are, it is beneficial for our overall health to keep moving.  Experts explain that failing to engage in “mild exercise on a regular basis results in reduced muscle strength, decreased bone mass, loss of balance and coordination, and reduced flexibility.”

They go on to say that despite commonly held beliefs, falls are not a normal part of aging and there are things you can do to help keep you on your feet and mitigate the risk of a fall.  Their first advice is to talk to your doctor about your risk and prevention.  Tell them if you have fallen and discuss your medications to see if side effects include dizziness or sleepiness that could contribute to falls.

While falls are common in seniors 65 years of age and older, individuals with dementia are at an even greater risk.  Researchers say there are several reasons for this including gait and balance issues as well as problems concentrating and staying focused on the task at hand.  Other issues that may increase the risk of falls include poor eyesight and chronic diseases such as Parkinson’s, and arthritis or numbness in the feet.  If you often feel dizzy or lightheaded upon standing or suddenly sitting up, ask your doctor if you might have postural hypotension, and find out how you can alleviate the symptoms.

Further tips to reduce your risk include having your eyes checked annually and updating your glasses when needed.  In addition, talk to your doctor about the best footwear for inside the house as well as outside.  Check your home for trip hazards (the CDC has a list of tips) and install grab bars in the bathroom.  Finally, ask your doctor about exercises to strengthen your leg muscles as well as balance-training exercises to improve balance.

At MorningStar of Wheat Ridge, our community is designed to accommodate our residents’ every need and to see to their comfort as well as their safety.  Each of our suites is equipped with a 24-hour emergency call system and handicap-accessible bathroom. We also recognize the importance of exercising, and as such, provide a full calendar of activities that includes a variety of exercise programs.  For more information about MorningStar’s assisted living or memory care in Wheat Ridge, CO, please visit our website or give us a call.

MorningStar takes pride in the reputation our communities have earned since 2003 for excellence and authenticity in why we serve and how we serve.  Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve.  Please contact us for more information about the finest assisted living and memory care in Wheat Ridge, CO.

How to Get Involved in Your Senior Living Community

September 22, 2023 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Staying social and active within your community can be difficult as we age. However, social interaction is vital for everyone’s well-being, especially seniors. Seniors not living in active senior care communities are more susceptible to social isolation. This is why seniors should be aware of the best social opportunities in senior living Des Moines has to offer.

Along with helping you navigate all the changes that come with growing older, MorningStar Senior Living and Assisted Living Des Moines focuses on your social well-being to provide mental and physical health benefits.

Recreation is important for seniors because having an active social life helps prevent depression and anxiety. Aside from all the amenities MorningStar has to offer, they advocate for community involvement by joining groups and pursuing hobbies. Sharing common interests and staying socially active makes it relatively easy to make friends at MorningStar if you want to venture out and try new things.

Would you consider yourself a bookworm? Joining a book club or starting one yourself is a great way to make new friends through a shared interest. Bonding over the discussion of books is an intimate way to get to know others. Plus, the routine of reading a book over time will keep you engaged and focused.

For seniors who prefer a physically and socially active lifestyle, joining workout classes is the right step to making new friends. Yoga, low-intensity workouts, and water aerobics are all low-risk physical activities for seniors. Joining a group like this is a safe way for seniors to keep their bodies healthy while socializing and meeting new people.

Some senior living communities have their gardens. At MorningStar, many assisted living residents enjoy tending to the garden and growing their own foods. Nurturing plants in a
collective garden has been found to give seniors a feeling of calmness and aid in a sense of
importance within the community. The group effort of growing and maintaining a living thing, such as plants, gives seniors in a retirement community the feeling of accomplishment, too!

MorningStar Assisted Living Des Moines provides high-quality care and safety assurances for seniors, making it an excellent choice for families seeking a safe and secure senior living community. With a commitment to safety, experienced staff members, and state-of-the-art safety features, you can be confident that your loved one will receive the best care possible with us at MorningStar.

Separating Age-Related Memory Loss From Dementia

September 11, 2023 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Expert report “at least half of those over age 65 say they are more forgetful than they were when they were younger, experiencing ‘senior moments’ of things like where they put things or recalling somebody’s name.” While several studies show as many as 40 percent of seniors suffer from some level of memory loss, this doesn’t necessarily mean Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia.

Doctors say we need to remember Alzheimer’s is not a normal part of aging, and there are some characteristics which separate age-related memory loss from dementia. One example is forgetting how to program your remote control or operate a piece of machinery after not doing it for a while. They stress this is common and typically not a cause for concern but forgetting how to get home or perform routine tasks may be a sign of a bigger problem.

Another symptom of Alzheimer’s or other memory loss diseases is forgetting what an object is used for or what it is. Someone with Alzheimer’s can forget they wear glasses or not recognize the glasses as their own. The same goes for forgetting names. A common problem is to forget a person’s name but a more serious problem is to forget easy words or replace them with something strange, making the person difficult to understand.

However, feeling you are forgetful may be cause for concern according to Dr. Barry Reisberg, director of the Fisher Alzheimer’s Disease Education and Resources Program at New York University Langone Medical Center. In a study in which Dr. Reisberg was involved, the findings showed “seniors with subjective memory complaints are, over many years, 4.5 times more likely to develop mild cognitive impairment or dementia than those who do not have such memory complaints.” Therefore, it is important to talk to your healthcare provider about any worries you may have.

Along with assisted living, MorningStar at Mountain Shadows in Colorado Springs offers specialized care for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. Every aspect of our care addresses the needs of our residents starting with the very design of our Reflections Neighborhood to a wide range of wellness programs, activities and healthy, delicious meals. Alzheimer’s Disease Affects the Whole Family

September 06, 2023 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

The Alzheimer’s Association explains Alzheimer’s is a disease that not only affects the individual but robs family members of their loved one. As the disease progresses, it takes away more and more of the person and the family begins to mourn the loss. While grief has different phases including denial, anger, guilt, sadness and acceptance in no particular order; universally shared by most families is unease about what the future holds and what to expect next.

Hope is a powerful human emotion so denying the disease is a coping mechanism for some as they try to convince themselves their loved one will get better or not reach the level of devastation experienced by many suffering from the disease. Others may refuse to recognize the changed behavior and make excuses for it.

Spouses and significant others may experience anger as they feel abandoned by the person and frustrated at their inability to do anything about it. They may also feel resentment and overwhelmed by caregiving duties but experts say it is important to be honest with yourself. Recognize you need more support and ask for it.

Other feelings of grief include guilt. A person may worry they have not done enough or are not visiting often enough. While unrealistic, spouses may feel guilty they are still able to enjoy life while their wife or husband is no longer able. If a caregiver is not getting enough support, they may even experience thoughts about wishing the person would die or go away. The Alzheimer’s Association says it is important to get the help and support you need and to accept your feelings and remember grief is part of the journey.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, we understand the devastation families feel when they get a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. We know the path going forward is unplanned for, and we consider it our privilege – our calling to walk alongside the memory-impaired and their family on their unexpected journey. MorningStar offers experienced, compassionate care for those in the early onset of Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases right through to the most advanced stages.

Medications That Can Cause Falls

September 04, 2023 by Quinn A in Senior Living

The Harvard Medical School reports it is estimated 1 in 3 people over age 65 will fall each year, and every 19 minutes a senior dies from a fall-related injury. Statistics show women are at higher risk for a fall but men are more likely to die from their injuries than women.

Seniors should be aware of several things that can affect balance and lead to a fall. These include certain medications, inner ear problems, foot pain, weight changes and a vitamin D deficiency. Anti-hypertensive medications prescribed to keep blood pressure under control or decrease the risk of stroke and heart failure are all known to affect balance. A common side effect is orthostatic hypotension, a condition that happens if blood pressure gets too low; and results in lightheadedness, faintness and dizziness especially when the person attempts to stand from a sitting or lying down position.

Medications that suppress the central nervous system may also result in a fall as they reduce alertness, and slow reactions and movements. Some of these types of drugs include anti-anxiety medications like diazepam (Valium) and lorazepam (Ativan). Additionally, antihistamines can cause drowsiness and are used in over-the-counter sleep aids like Nyquil and Sominex, or combined with acetaminophen in products like Tylenol PM.

If you or a loved one takes medication to treat an overactive bladder or tricyclic antidepressants to help lessen chronic pain, they too can affect a person’s balance. Other drugs that increase the risk of a fall are opioids such as codeine, hydrocodone and oxycodone.

MorningStar at Mountain Shadows is a senior living community in Colorado Springs with 45 private assisted living suites in various floor plans. In addition, our Reflections Neighborhood has 19 secure suites devoted to the specialized care of those with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. August 28, 2023 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Hip fractures are unfortunately very common for seniors in the United States. A majority of these accidents are caused by falling sideways, tripping, or a loss of mobility. Unfortunately, we become increasingly susceptible to new injuries as we age. Accidental falls result from typical physical changes that come with time, such as weakened bones and joints, balance issues, and loss of muscle mass. At MorningStar, we offer assisted living that works to avoid accidental falls and hip fractures. By employing safety features in our senior living community, we enhance our residents’ overall happiness and health.

At MorningStar, we understand the importance of creating a secure yet comfortable atmosphere assisted living community. Our design philosophy includes simplified floor plans that minimize distractions and eliminate fall hazards, ensuring the safety of our residents as they navigate their living spaces. Knowing that hip fractures are a prominent issue for seniors, we keep our halls obstacle free and maintain large common areas with plenty of space to move at your own pace. Our walls also offer handrails, wheelchair-accessible ramps, and walker-friendly flooring.

Our interiors’ soothing colors and home-like aesthetics promote a sense of calm and familiarity, with soft couches, decorated walls, and open concepts that create a welcoming environment. Additionally, our memory care community, which we call Reflections, features enclosed courtyards, providing residents with the freedom to enjoy the outdoors while ensuring their safety.

Safety regulations are in place at MorningStar to ensure the well-being of our residents in assisted living. Our community is equipped with 24-hour security and emergency response systems to ensure that residents are safe and secure at all times. Signs of B12 Deficiency in Seniors

August 25, 2023 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

As we’ve been told by our parents, doctors, and social media… vitamins and minerals are extremely important for our overall health and well-being. Taking supplements is nothing to be ashamed of. In fact, did you know the human body can’t produce most of the vitamins we need to survive? B12 is a vitamin our bodies do not naturally produce and it can be difficult to incorporate enough B12 in our diets. Seniors especially struggle in getting an adequate amount of B12. Knowing this, MorningStar Senior Living and Assisted Living of Des Moines, Iowa is mindful of the Signs and effects of B12 Deficiency in Seniors.

Unfortunately, B12 deficiency is very common, especially among older adults. This is a problem because a lack of B12 can cause, or worsen, cognitive impairment and mobility issues. At MorningStar, our executive chefs are equipped with knowledge of vitamins and supplements.

Our trained Executive Chefs design seasonal menus for our assisted living residents that feature the freshest ingredients from high-quality producers; all locally sourced when possible! At MorningStar, our senior living community understands diets alter as we age. Our Chefs are trained in how best to modify menus and recipes to accommodate changing needs and tastes. Our nutritional choices include low-sodium, sugar-free, no-sugar-added, vegetarian, and low-fat for residents to self-manage.

Due to its nature, B12 is available to humans in meat and dairy products. Those that opt for a more vegetarian or vegan diet may be lacking in B12 greater than others. We recommend taking a daily multivitamin to produce B12 for seniors. If you are an avid meat eater, however, this does not mean you are not at risk. As we age, our bodies slow our ability to absorb B12. That is why it is recommended for everyone, regardless of diet, to be mindful of their B12 intake.

Productive Memory Care Activities for Seniors with Alzheimer’s

August 23, 2023 by Quinn A in Memory care

If your senior partner or elderly loved one has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, you may have noticed that everyday activities have become more difficult and frustrating for them. Although chores, meal cooking, hygiene, and everyday activities have become more wearisome, your elderly loved one will still have the need to feel successful. Holistic memory care offered at MorningStar Senior Living and Alzheimer’s Care in Des Moines, Iowa provides productive memory care activities for seniors with Alzheimer’s to help ease Alzheimer’s symptoms and increase overall happiness and joy.

Being happily engaged in activities reduces frustration, agitation, and depression which are often byproducts of Alzheimer’s. In order to help your elderly loved one feel productive and successful, MorningStar Senior Living incorporates holistic memory care methods that are utilized by our specialty-trained memory care team.

Each individual is different. By learning more about a senior with Alzheimer’s, and their quirks, preferences, and special needs, we can holistically care for their memory loss by engaging in activities that fulfill them. Seniors with Alzheimer’s enjoy feeling needed and helpful. Asking your loved one struggling with dementia or Alzheimer’s to help you fold laundry will keep them occupied and give them an activity that will leave them feeling successful in the end.

Likewise, asking a senior to carry a baby doll will remind them of the joy of caring for children. This doll will keep their hands busy and provide them with a duty. In properly caring for this doll, they will feel as though they have been of service.

Providing unique and engaging activities is what we do best at MorningStar Memory Care for Seniors with Alzheimer’s. We’ve learned that seniors struggling with dementia find accomplishment in untying knots in rope and yarn. If these are loosely tied, seniors can easily loosen these knots and will feel great joy in knowing they’ve helped you fix something.

Tips for Meaningful Connection for Those with an Alzheimer’s Diagnosis

August 23, 2023 by Quinn A in Memory care

Consider the most recent immediate connection you had with a close friend, neighbor, or colleague. Often, we make friends with those who share similar backgrounds, interests, and hobbies. Contrary to popular belief, it is no different for someone with dementia or an Alzheimer’s Diagnosis. Everyone wants to feel appreciated and connected to their loved ones and the people around them. At MorningStar Senior Living, we believe that although communication with someone struggling with a memory loss diagnosis may look and feel different, it is still possible. Not only are these connections possible, but with some tips, you can spark a meaningful connection with your loved one again in spite of an Alzheimer’s diagnosis.

In our experience at MorningStar Senior Living and Memory Care, although someone with Alzheimer’s may not remember names or complete aspects of faces, they do remember the emotional experiences they shared with you. Igniting these meaningful collections may mean bringing in photo albums, home videos, and other keepsakes that you two created together. While they may not fully remember the intricate details of the events you share, they remember how these events felt to them, and they will be grateful to experience that with you again.

At MorningStar, we practice holistic memory care methods. This means, accepting our memory care residents as they are. If you are experiencing frustration with your loved one due to repetitive questions or prolonged silence and confusion, it may feel like the connection between you two is gone. Know that this is fear talking, and your loved one is still with you. Let the details go, and enjoy the time and experiences you two can still actively share together.

Nonverbal communication is effective communication. Holding hands, hugs, eye contact, and body movements mean so much when verbal abilities are hindered. Exploring more nonverbal techniques at MorningStar will help you expand this connection further.

Help Reach Your Weight Goal With Portion Control

August 14, 2023 by Quinn A in Senior Living

In addition to the types of food we eat, dieticians say it is also important to pay attention to portion size when attempting to shed a few pounds as it will help us reach our goal. When trying to diet, sticking to nutrient-dense, relatively low-calorie foods such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean meats and poultry are your best choices; but no matter how healthy a food is, you still should not over consume.

This is where portion control plays a part. Amy Gorin, a plant-based registered dietitian and owner of Plant-Based Eats, a collection of curated meal plans, grocery lists and nutrition tip sheets, explains that whole foods like almond butter and dark chocolate are good for us, they should be eaten in moderation and in proper portions. In other words, the bottom-line is a large chocolate bar should not be consumed in one sitting.

However, to complicate matters, experts explain that in many cases, strictly following portion sizes suggested on the container would differ from what a registered dietician would recommend. The problem with across-the-board portion sizes is they do not address the age group, gender, and activity level of the individual person. Add to that, portion size is a critical component to losing weight especially in foods that are higher in calories.

Also eating the right amount of food helps to maintain a balanced gut. The Harvard Health Men’s Watch, suggests “a healthy gut microbiome stimulates the body’s immune system and may shield against an array of chronic diseases, including cancer, heart disease and rheumatoid arthritis.”
