Why Open Communication with Family is Key in Memory Care

April 17, 2024 by Quinn A in Memory care

Many families fear placing their loved one into a retirement home because of the perceived idea that there will be a lack of communication and family involvement in their loved one’s care. While there are certainly red flags to be wary of when it comes to finding the right living arrangement for your family member, Alzheimer’s care is most successful when there is open collaboration between families and care providers.

Fostering collaboration and trust between families and memory care staff enhances the quality of Alzheimer’s care in multiple ways. Keep reading to understand why open communication is valued at MorningStar Senior Living Littleton Co.

Understanding Leads to Consistency and Trust

Alzheimer’s care managers should value what input a family can provide about their loved one before creating a treatment plan. Experienced memory care managers can voice valuable insight and guidance about what may be a good course of action for successful Alzheimer’s care, but families ultimately know their loved one’s needs and abilities best.

MorningStar Memory Care and Senior Living Littleton Co takes a personal approach to Alzheimer’s care. By interviewing the family on the senior’s full history, we discover core motivators, abilities, and preferences that help to create the best Alzheimer’s care for them. This personalized plan can also be readjusted at any time. Having open and continuous communication with family, medical providers, and the senior in care leads to better consistency in care.

Trusted Alzheimer’s is easy to find at MorningStar Senior Living Littleton Co. Named the “Alzheimer’s Association Leader in Dementia Care,” MorningStar is a senior living community that has enrolled more than 75% of its staff in an eight-hour training that encompasses brain pathology, communication techniques, and methods of lessening agitation with non-pharmaceuticals in memory care. Colorado is the only Alzheimer’s Association chapter in the country offering this special Alzheimer’s care program.

The Importance of Continuity of Care in Memory Care Communities

April 15, 2024 by Quinn A in Memory care

Change is difficult for seniors, especially if they are struggling with Alzheimer’s or dementia. Some senior living communities are not equipped to handle the changing needs that come with cognitive decline from dementia and they may recommend a resident to relocate. While finding the best memory care possible is important, constantly adjusting living situations may cause more harm than good.

Picking a senior living community that offers a continuum of care is beneficial for seniors in need of memory care

Families shouldn’t have to worry about their loved ones needing to relocate or re adjust to new surroundings because of their changing medical needs. Instead, MorningStar Senior Living Littleton Co offers seniors with Alzheimer’s or dementia continuity of care that is made to change with their needs. Keep reading to further understand the importance of continuity of memory care in senior living communities.

Staff has established relationships and familiarity with residents

If your loved one is transitioning from assisted living to memory care, senior living communities with a continuum of care are already aware of the challenges your loved one is facing, making these needs easily communicated to the next department or care staff. Senior living with a continuum of care prioritizes tracking medical records and changing needs so that all residents’ files are up-to-date. Not only this, but the community is familiar with your loved one’s personality, likes, dislikes, and passions. Continuity of care instills confidence that your loved one will be better understood and their needs more easily met by caretakers and staff who have established relationships and familiarity with them.

What Families Should Know About Personalized Memory Care

April 12, 2024 by Quinn A in Memory care

As the understanding of Alzheimer's and dementia evolves, so too does the approach to care. Many memory care communities are heading in the direction of creating personalized memory care plans for seniors with Alzheimer’s and dementia. The best memory care communities understand that senior care should be tailored to each individual, prioritizing their set of unique challenges, health concerns, and personality. If you are new to the world of Alzheimer's, you may be unfamiliar with the idea of personalized Alzheimer’s care. This is why MorningStar Senior Living Littleton Co wants families to better understand the benefits of personalized memory care for seniors.

Individualized Memory Care that can be Adjusted at Any Time

Memory care at MorningStar Senior Living Littleton Co provides individualized care that is personalized to each resident. This individualized memory care is dependent on their health needs, mobility, age, wants, current abilities, and much more.

Personalized care plans ensure that each senior is receiving the correct level of care for themselves, allowing them to experience their life to the fullest while remaining safe and cared for. With the help of healthcare providers, family members, and care managers, we can agree on what level of care will be best for your loved one. By providing individualized care, seniors at MorningStar Senior Living Portland experience more independence and autonomy while being supported to do the things they love in retirement.

A More Successful Approach to Alzheimer’s Care

Unlike traditional one-size-fits-all approaches to memory care, personalized Alzheimer’s care can be a more successful approach to treating dementia because the treatment plan recognizes the individuality of each senior and what their personal needs are. Tailoring care to the unique needs of each resident enhances the overall quality of life for seniors with Alzheimer's and can encourage improvement in their physical, cognitive, emotional, and social abilities.

Top Mental Wellness and Cognitive Stimulation Activities for Seniors

March 29, 2024 by Quinn A in Memory care

Alzheimer’s and dementia are troubling diseases. Regardless of the amount of research, we still feel in the dark about memory loss and how to treat it. While there is no cure for Alzheimer’s or dementia, there is research to suggest that the lifestyle changes we make can improve symptoms of memory loss in seniors with dementia.

Whether a person is in an Alzheimer’s care facility or receiving care at home, mentally stimulating activities like the ones below should be done regularly to promote overall health.

Keeping Seniors Sharp

The following activities enhance the quality of life for seniors struggling with memory loss. Part of being a resident at MorningStar Senior Living Littleton co is being part of an active and vibrant senior community that promotes social engagement and holistic health. Whether caring for a loved one at home or visiting a senior in senior living, incorporating the following activities into Alzheimer’s care improves senior wellness tenfold.

  • Board Games and Puzzles for Seniors

Puzzles and board games offer great brain exercise for seniors. Puzzles encourage problem-solving skills and are great to play in a group to aid in communication and connection.

  • Senior Crafting Groups

Crafting is a relaxing way for seniors in Alzheimer’s care to work with their hands and connect with others around them. Safe crafts for seniors can include painting, drawing, and modeling.

  • Music Therapy for Dementia

Music therapy is one of the more popular activities for seniors in Alzheimer’s care. Music calms our minds and can even spur back old memories and feelings. This can be done simply by playing music allowed in the room or listening to music as a group.

  • Nature Walks and Senior Care

Being in nature is relaxing for almost everyone, especially seniors dealing with memory loss. Make sure to provide safety measures if you and an elderly loved one are planning to do a nature walk.

The Benefits of Personalized Care for Seniors with Alzheimer’s Disease

February 23, 2024 by Quinn A in Memory care

There is still no cure for Alzheimer’s or dementia. This means a memory loss diagnosis can only be treated for the length of the individual’s life. Finding proper memory care takes dedicated time and research to find the community that is right for you and your loved one. The best memory care communities understand that senior care should be tailored to each individual, prioritizing their set of unique challenges, health concerns, and personality.

What is Personalized Memory Care?

Proper Alzheimer’s care should not be “one-size-fits-all.” Seniors with a memory loss diagnosis should receive the proper amount and type of care they require to support their physical, emotional and social needs. Personalized memory care is designed to meet the seniors where they are at. Specialized memory care plans are designed with help from family, health care providers and personalized care managers at MorningStar Senior Living Littleton Co.

Memory Care at MorningStar Encourages Independence

It’s difficult for seniors with Alzheimer’s or dementia to experience autonomy and independence in the same way they once did. Many lose mobility, motor function, and experience changes in their communication style. Personalized care plans support a senior’s independence, regardless of their level. While memory care communities still provide ample medication management and help with daily activities, our senior living community works with a memory loss diagnosis to develop activities and routines that promote independence and autonomy.

Regular assessments and family meetings allow the memory care team members at MorningStar to update your loved one’s personalized care plan whenever necessary, giving you and your loved one a flexible memory care experience that works.

Better Food Choices for Seniors with Alzheimer’s or Dementia

February 21, 2024 by Quinn A in Senior Living

We all know that making healthy food options benefits our bodies, but did you know our food choices impact our brain health, too? Making informed choices about what foods are beneficial for seniors with Alzheimer’s or dementia can greatly improve their health and happiness.

There is currently no evidence to suggest that certain foods can prevent Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. However, there are still healthy food choices and eating habits you can make to improve symptoms of Alzheimer’s. Senior living communities that specialize in Alzheimer’s care encourage these food choices for seniors:

Nutrient-Rich Foods:

MorningStar Senior Living Littleton Co offers Alzheimer’s care options that encourage healthy eating through their  “BrainWise” program. “BrainWise” is a lifestyle at MorningStar where we prioritize using ingredients known to support brain health. Natural fats found in SuperFoods are proven to nourish, protect, and enhance the performance of our brain cells.

Foods with Cognitive Benefits:

Next time you’re dining with your family member at MorningStar, ask our executive chefs for meals with turmeric, broccoli, or pumpkin seeds. These foods are rich in magnesium, iron, zinc, and copper and are known to support cognitive health. Are chefs design seasonal menus that feature the freshest ingredients from high-quality producers, locally sourced when possible, to support the health and wellness of our residents in memory care.

Understanding the Need for Memory Care

December 25, 2023 by Quinn A in Memory care

Many families will notice an elderly member of the family begins to be more forgetful. Birthdays may be missed or names forgotten, but this doesn’t necessarily mean they are experiencing dementia or Alzheimer’s.

For those families that have received a memory loss diagnosis, the world seems confusing and dark. You may have families of your own, careers or other life callings that, sadly, make caring for another individual with Alzheimer’s or dementia impossible. Memory care communities give families peace of mind. With the best caretaking staff that specializes in memory loss, along with scientifically-backed therapies and activities, memory care makes memory loss more manageable.

What is Memory Care? Who is it For?

To define memory care, memory care is specialized caretaking and support for people with memory loss or an Alzheimer’s/dementia diagnosis. Memory care communities provide a safe environment for those struggling with memory loss to be supported and encouraged to participate in everyday activities. Some senior living communities, like MorningStar Senior Living Littleton, Co, have a private memory care neighborhood dedicated to the needs of those with memory loss.

Memory care can be for anyone experiencing memory loss. However, many senior living communities have age restrictions. MorningStar Senior Living in Littleton offers trusted memory care for seniors aged 55 and up.

Memory Care Benefits

As you’ve learned, memory care is specifically designed with the interest of seniors with memory loss in mind. This means that safety is of utmost priority, staff should be well-trained and social activities should be mindful and interactive. However, there are so many other benefits that come with a memory care community:

  • All-day supervision and support

  • Specialized meal plans

  • Nursing available

  • Increased socialization

  • Improved independence

You can find all this and more at the best memory care community Littleton has to offer seniors and their families. Come tour today and find out how memory care can improve your life.

The Difference Between Memory Care and 24-Hour Nursing

November 29, 2023 by Quinn A in Memory care

Nursing homes and senior living communities are not as similar as some might think. Memory care communities are focused on holistic treatment and socialization to comfort seniors as they age. Nursing homes tend to focus on a more clinical approach to Dementia management, which may look like more medications and more intense treatment.

While both have their benefits, it’s important to understand the difference between 24-hour nursing facilities and memory care at Senior Living in Littleton, Co.

What level of care can memory care facilities provide?

Memory care communities, like MorningStar, provide a high level of care for seniors struggling with memory loss. Since memory care communities are specifically designed to treat and watch over seniors with Alzheimer’s or dementia, staff tends to be more specialized and undergo different training.

Depending on the level of care a senior requires, 24-hour nursing homes may be better suited to address certain concerns. If a loved one is struggling with multiple ailments, such as late-stage cancer and dementia, an on-call nurse may be more fit to provide care.

For treating certain medical concerns, MorningStar has a daily 24-hour nurse within Littleton’s senior living community. This provides reassurance to families of seniors who are accident-prone or require a moderate amount of daily medical care. Please see our Care Services page for a description of how widely we can serve under our Assisted Living license through the additional support of third-party providers.

Because MorningStar offers a higher level of supervision under a holistic memory care routine, this can appear more expensive than skilled nursing services. However, the level of care, amount of social activities, therapies, and dedicated caregivers at MorningStar are guaranteed to provide the support your loved one requires.

Recognized Senior Living Communities Leading in Memory Care

November 27, 2023 by Quinn A in Memory care

Trusting an assisted living community for your elderly parent or loved one can be difficult, especially if they are in need of memory care. Depending on the needs of your loved one, you should consider several factors to find the best memory care.

MorningStar Senior Living Littleton Co has been named “Alzheimer’s Association Leader in Dementia Care." You can find loyal memory care for your family in a community devoted to holistic Alzheimer’s and dementia treatment.

To be designated as a leader in dementia memory care, a senior living community is required to enroll 75% of its staff in an eight-hour training that encompasses brain pathology, communication techniques, and methods of lessening agitation with non-pharmaceuticals.

Colorado is the only Alzheimer’s Association chapter in the country offering this special program. MorningStar of Littleton is proud to have earned this special recognition for our expertise in serving the memory impaired.

One aspect that sets MorningStar apart from other memory care communities is MorningStar’s signature philosophy and approach to dementia care. This holistic approach to memory care is described by the expanse of possibilities we call “Lavender Sky” where our ambition is to thoughtfully enter, embrace, and explore.

Embracing memory loss, as confusing as that may sound, is one step closer to better understanding memory loss as a whole. Under a “Lavender Sky,” we all practice stronger empathy and understanding towards our loved ones dealing with memory loss. The way our parents or family members once interacted with us and the world around them will begin to change. As they change, so too must our own communication and care towards them begin to change.

What is Holistic Memory Care?

November 24, 2023 by Quinn A in Memory care

Traditional memory care options like medication or hospitalization are not always helpful for seniors struggling with Dementia. This path can lead to more anxiety, depression, and loud outbursts throughout the rest of the life.

Senior Living in Littleton Co offers holistic memory care for seniors and their families who are looking for an alternative to traditional dementia care.

Holistic memory care is rooted in the idea that those with Alzheimer’s can still live meaningful and fulfilling lives. A holistic approach to Alzheimer’s treatment is a group effort. If you are looking for effective memory care treatments, look for senior living communities that involve professional caretakers, doctors, family members, and of course, the individual with a memory loss diagnosis.

A holistic approach to dementia care includes providing whole-body health. This means considering the following things to promote overall happiness and well-being:

Environment- A senior’s home plays a major role in their health and management of a memory loss diagnosis. Comfortable living quarters with trusted and empathetic caregivers will make seniors feel more relaxed. Anxiety-inducing living situations can progress a memory loss diagnosis or make symptoms worse. Find comfortable senior living in Littleton Co where seniors can relax and be treated promptly and with respect.

Food and Nutrition- Many are aware that what we eat impacts our health in multiple ways. This is true for seniors with Alzheimer’s or dementia. Whole foods that are dense with nutrients, protein, and vitamins can help ease the negative effects of memory loss. Highly processed foods full of oils, sugars, and carbohydrates can cause discomfort and make symptoms of memory loss worse.

Communication and Social Activities- Just because communication between a senior with dementia has changed, doesn’t mean they don’t still need or want socialization. Social senior living communities that offer memory care for seniors improve multiple aspects of life and make seniors feel connected and valued.

Tips for Meaningful Connection for Those with an Alzheimer’s Diagnosis

August 23, 2023 by Quinn A in Memory care

Consider the most recent immediate connection you had with a close friend, neighbor, or colleague. Often, we make friends with those who share similar backgrounds, interests, and hobbies. Contrary to popular belief, it is no different for someone with dementia or an Alzheimer’s Diagnosis. Everyone wants to feel appreciated and connected to their loved ones and the people around them. At MorningStar Senior Living, we believe that although communication with someone struggling with a memory loss diagnosis may look and feel different, it is still possible. Not only are these connections possible, but with some tips, you can spark a meaningful connection with your loved one again in spite of an Alzheimer’s diagnosis.

In our experience at MorningStar Senior Living and Memory Care, although someone with Alzheimer’s may not remember names or complete aspects of faces, they do remember the emotional experiences they shared with you. Igniting these meaningful collections may mean bringing in photo albums, home videos, and other keepsakes that you two created together. While they may not fully remember the intricate details of the events you share, they remember how these events felt to them, and they will be grateful to experience that with you again.

At MorningStar, we practice holistic memory care methods. This means, accepting our memory care residents as they are. If you are experiencing frustration with your loved one due to repetitive questions or prolonged silence and confusion, it may feel like the connection between you two is gone. Know that this is fear talking, and your loved one is still with you. Let the details go, and enjoy the time and experiences you two can still actively share together.

Nonverbal communication is effective communication. Holding hands, hugs, eye contact, and body movements mean so much when verbal abilities are hindered. Exploring more nonverbal techniques at MorningStar will help you expand this connection further.

Intergenerational Programs are Proving Beneficial for Seniors in Memory Care

May 24, 2023 by Quinn A in Memory care

Intergenerational programs bring together seniors and younger generations, such as children or teenagers, to engage in activities and build relationships. These programs can involve storytelling, crafts, gardening, or shared hobbies. Intergenerational interactions provide seniors with a sense of purpose, foster social connections, and offer opportunities for meaningful engagement. At MorningStar of Littleton, we encourage this holistic memory care approach for seniors in Alzheimer’s care by welcoming senior’s family members regularly into our community in order to foster open communication that encourages memory building and recognition.

Storytelling and reading programs bring generations together in memory care facilities. These programs bring together seniors and children or teenagers for storytelling sessions or reading activities. Seniors can share their life experiences, personal stories, or favorite books with younger participants. This promotes social interaction, encourages communication, and creates a connection through the power of storytelling across generations. This activity is a great way to get everyone involved in our senior living communities.

At MorningStar of Littleton, we are very excited about our community garden and the seniors that work hard to maintain it in our community. We like to encourage our resident’s family members to spend time with their loved ones in the garden to foster intergenerational communication. Gardening brings together seniors and younger individuals to cultivate plants, tend to a garden, or engage in nature-related activities. This allows for shared experiences, learning opportunities, and appreciation for the natural world. Gardening also provides a calming and therapeutic environment for individuals with memory impairments.

Other volunteer programs are available to foster intergenerational communication at MorningStar. Intergenerational volunteer programs, such as skill sharing. Through skill-sharing programs, MorningStar residents have the opportunity to share, practice, and explore activities and skills with other people in the community. This involves workshops, classes, or mentoring individuals who are interested in learning a particular skill or hobby. Skill-sharing programs promote lifelong learning and create a vibrant and inclusive community.

If You’ve Ever Had Chicken Pox, You Can Get Shingles 6/4/2023 0 Comments

May 22, 2023 by Quinn A in Memory care

We have all heard about shingles but many of us are confused as to whether it is contagious and what are the chances we will get it. Experts explain shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which is the same virus that causes chicken pox. Moreover, if you had chickenpox as a child, you are at risk of getting shingles sometime in your life.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports one in three people develop shingles during their lifetime. While this means many will never get shingles, some people get it more than once and others can develop flare-ups periodically throughout their lives. Dr. Michael Urban, a senior lecturer and director of the doctorate of occupational therapy program at the University of New Haven in West Haven, Connecticut, explains flair-ups can be a full range of symptoms or barely noticeable.

Statistics show in recent years younger people are getting shingles but typically the disease occurs in those over 50 years of age and the risk increases the older we get or with various health conditions. People undergoing cancer treatment as well as being ill or under a lot of stress are all at a higher risk for shingles.

Symptoms vary and include feeling like you may have the flu, and/or a red, itchy, painful rash or fluid-filled blisters. Before the rash appears, you may feel an uncomfortable sensation, numbness or tingling, and may be the only symptoms you ever experience. Experts say shingles are not contagious but you can give someone chickenpox if they have never had it; but only if they come in direct contact with the fluid in the blisters such as through a washcloth or bed sheet. To ensure your safety, talk to your doctor about getting a shingles vaccine if you are over the age of 50 or suffer from chronic diseases like renal failure, COPD and diabetes among others.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, our goal is to be a true home distinguished by comfort, wellness and love; made possible through a dedicated team who understand how to provide residents with a quality-of-life other assisted living communities simply cannot match. The Exciting Benefits of Brain Fitness Programs

May 22, 2023 by Quinn A in Memory care

Brain fitness programs are popular Alzheimer’s care therapy in senior living communities. These memory care activities focus on cognitive exercises and puzzles designed to maintain and improve cognitive abilities. These activities may include memory games, puzzles, trivia, and computer-based brain training exercises. Brain fitness programs promote mental agility, enhance memory function, and provide a fun and challenging way to engage seniors. Senior living communities like MorningStar of Littleton incorporate these brain fitness programs for seniors struggling with Alzheimer’s or other memory loss diagnosis.

Brain fitness therapy, also sometimes known as cognitive training, has shown promising benefits for seniors with Alzheimer's disease. This therapy offers a proactive approach to managing Alzheimer's disease by targeting cognitive abilities and providing a range of stimulating activities. It not only enhances cognitive function but also contributes to improved everyday functioning, confidence, social connections, and overall quality of life for seniors with Alzheimer's.

Memory games and puzzles are highly beneficial for seniors with Alzheimer's as they specifically target memory and cognitive abilities. Activities such as crosswords, Sudoku, word searches, and matching games can help stimulate the brain and improve memory recall. These games challenge individuals to focus, concentrate, and engage in problem-solving, which promotes mental agility and cognitive flexibility. Additionally, puzzles and memory games provide a sense of accomplishment when completed, boosting self-esteem and motivation.

Music therapy has shown remarkable benefits for individuals with Alzheimer's disease. Music has a unique ability to evoke emotions and memories, even in those with advanced cognitive decline. Engaging in music-related activities can enhance mood, reduce agitation, and promote cognitive stimulation. Singing songs, playing musical instruments, or listening to familiar tunes can trigger memories and evoke a sense of familiarity and joy. Incorporating rhythmic movements or dance into music sessions adds a physical component, stimulating different areas of the brain. Group music therapy sessions encourage social interaction and provide opportunities for shared experiences, fostering a sense of belonging and connection.

Wandering Is a Big Risk for Those With Dementia

May 17, 2023 by Quinn A in Memory care

The Alzheimer’s Association says that six in 10 people with dementia will wander. The danger with this is someone with Alzheimer’s disease may not remember their name, their address or how to get home. Furthermore, the more agitated the person becomes when they feel lost and disorientated, the less able they may be to tell someone something that could help get them safely back home.

Experts say anyone suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia that is mobile is at risk for wandering. Even if the person is in the early stages of the disease, they may still get disorientated; but thankfully there are strategies to help keep your loved one safe.

It is important to have a plan in place in the event that it should happen to your parents or another loved one. Find out if your area has a “Safe Return Program” and enroll them in it and have them wear a GPS locating device at all times. Also, learn to recognize the warning signs of potential wandering such as: has the person forgotten how to get to familiar places, talks about going home even when they are home, gets confused as to where familiar places in the home are, and acts nervous or anxious in crowded areas.

Tips to help prevent wandering include creating and sticking to a routine, identifying the times when wandering is most likely to occur, and trying to make sure all of the person’s needs are met so they don’t feel the need to go out. In addition, reposition door locks out of the line of sight and make sure car keys are not left out. You can buy a device that sounds an alarm when a door or window is opened; and never leave the person locked in at home or in a car alone.

Along with assisted living, MorningStar of Wheat Ridge offers memory care in a secure environment that allows residents to safely explore their surroundings, including an enclosed patio and courtyard. In addition, our dedicated staff is trained to keep residents engaged and safe. Please visit our website for more information about MorningStar and our compassionate, loving memory care.
