MorningStar at Mountain Shadows Offers Experienced Memory Care

August 14, 2024 by Quinn A in Memory care

Getting a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or another dementia-related disease is devastating for the person and their family.  All of one’s carefully laid plans are cast aside as their future takes a much different path.  MorningStar at Mountain Shadows wants families to know we are here to help.

We are an assisted living community in Colorado Springs, convenient to medical facilities, shopping, and other services.  MorningStar has senior living communities across eleven states, where we have worked hard to become dementia care specialists.

MorningStar’s extensive experience has allowed us to gain a deep understanding of the disease, and we consider it our privilege to serve those with memory loss.  We recognize that the person’s essence remains and are committed to finding ways to connect with and nurture that essence.

We also consider residents’ family members to be part of our MorningStar family as we walk alongside the memory-impaired and their families on this unexpected journey.  Our unique approach to memory care is called Lavender Sky, which is how we thoughtfully enter, embrace and explore the entirely different and isolating world of memory loss.

Before the resident joins our community, we take the time to get to know them through interviews with their family members to learn about their history, vocation, talents and preferences.  We then use this knowledge to help us design an individualized care plan that takes all of this into consideration.

Every aspect of our memory care is designed to address the needs of our residents including 24/7 compassionate Care Managers, wellness programs and activities that will stimulate and calm as needed.  In addition, our Reflections Neighborhood provides daily health monitoring, assistance with meals prepared by our Executive Chef, scheduled outings and special events.

Our suites accommodate a resident’s own furniture and mementos so they are sure to feel right at home. For residents’ safety, suites are equipped with handicap-accessible bathrooms and emergency call systems.  Please contact us or visit our website to learn more about MorningStar’s assisted living in Colorado Springs.

MorningStar is guided by a culture rooted in our mission of honoring God, valuing seniors, and investing in our team, which allows us to deliver services with warmth, sincerity and depth of purpose. We have built a reputation for creating homes filled with an atmosphere of love and community. When to Consider a Memory Care Community

May 08, 2024 by Quinn A in Memory care

A Place for Mom’s website explains how many people in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease or another type of dementia can live independently with or without the help of in-home caregivers or family members. However, they also stress there may come a time when the disease progresses to a stage where the person’s safety and physical well-being is in jeopardy and more care is needed.

As a person with Alzheimer’s may have good days and bad, it can be hard to tell if they would be better served in a memory care community. Experts say signs include: has their appearance changed? Do they look unkempt and have they lost weight due to forgetting to eat? Do they appear agitated and confused? Are they unable to carry on a conversation?

Your loved one’s healthcare provider can help you decide if it is time for memory care. Dr. Philip Branshaw, an internal medicine specialist in Batavia, Illinois, says, “When talking about memory care, or some form of a different living arrangement, I’ll center the talk around their ability to perform the activities of daily living and safety.”

A Place for Mom says to gauge a senior’s abilities and safety, your doctor may ask if they:

  • Get lost on routes they take frequently, such as going to the grocery store or taking a walk around the neighborhood

  • Have trouble remembering to eat or drink

  • Are forgetting to take their medication appropriately

  • Are struggling to bathe regularly or get dressed as usual

  • Had a fall or been to the emergency room recently

  • Leave the stove on after preparing food

Along with assisted living, Colorado Springs’ MorningStar at Mountain Shadows provides compassionate memory care for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Our holistic approach to care is designed to affirm the value of the person and to find ways to celebrate the smallest successes.  Beginning with dedicated caregivers to activities, programs and meals tailored to our residents’ special needs, we bring a deep understanding of the disease to our care.  Please see our website for more information.

Are You Considering a Memory Care Community for a Loved One?

February 16, 2024 by Quinn A in Memory care

Are you considering a community setting for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia?  Experts say the first and most important thing to learn about senior living communities offering memory care is whether they are up to the task of caring for your loved one.  Do services align with their needs and is the home capable of advanced care down the road?  A Place for Mom’s website says by asking the following questions, you should get the answers you need.

Before you begin your search, they suggest taking a few minutes to think about the needs of your loved one.  Do they have a tendency to wander or exhibit aggressive behaviors?  Do they require help with eating and drinking?  Are they mobile or use a wheelchair or walker?  Other information to relay is if they need help toileting, require 24/7 supervision, or care for medical conditions such as diabetes.

Once you establish that a memory care community is equipped to care for your loved one, now ask questions including how experienced is the staff; and do they have any special training.  If so, is it on-going?  Will your loved one have an individualized care plan?  Also, what is the staff-ratio during the day and at night?

Inquire about safety protocols starting with secured doors, courtyards, and grounds as well as an emergency call system.  Are hallways color-coded making it easier for residents to navigate about more independently?   Is there a nurse on duty, and how extensive are medical services?   Also, ask about the type of memory care activities and treatments available.  After you have learned what you can, experts say the final decision will most likely come down to your peace of mind.

MorningStar of Wheat Ridge’s goal is to provide the highest quality senior living, which includes compassionate memory care for those in the early onset of dementia through to the most advanced stages.  Our holistic approach to care is designed to affirm the value of the person and to find ways to celebrate the smallest successes.  Beginning with dedicated caregivers to activities, programs and meals tailored to our residents’ special needs, we bring a deep understanding of the disease to our care.  Please contact us for more information about our Reflections Neighborhood and the philosophy that guides our care.

Use Music and Art to Engage Those Living With Alzheimer’s Disease

January 19, 2024 by Quinn A in Memory care

Multiple studies report on the benefits of using music and art to improve the lives of those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. Experts explain they help encourage engagement and self-expression even in more advanced stages.

Professionals who work with Alzheimer’s patients say music seems to decrease agitation and improve behavioral problems common in the middle stages of the disease. Patients in later stages may even be able to sing a song they knew from childhood or tap a foot to the beat even after other forms of communication are difficult. Dancing or gently moving to a rhythm helps coordinate motor movements as well as allows the person to express emotions. Research shows “musical memories are often preserved in Alzheimer’s disease because key brain areas linked to musical memory are relatively undamaged by the disease.”

If you wish to use music to calm and soothe, choose peaceful, tranquil pieces. If you want to boost spirits and bring back happy memories, use livelier pieces. Experts say to turn off other distractions like a TV and close windows if there is outside noise. Music may be more enjoyable to the person if it is something they are familiar with from their earlier life.

Art can also be an outlet for self-expression and give a person with Alzheimer’s a sense of purpose and accomplishment in creating their own work. Experts recommended avoiding any project that seems childlike and demeaning. Use safe, non-toxic materials, and if they need, take their hand and guide it on the paper to get them started. Moreover, remember there is no need for the person to finish.

MorningStar of Wheat Ridge is a trusted assisted living and memory care community in a northwest suburb of Denver.  Our holistic memory care is individualized for each resident and designed to stimulate or calm in response to a particular mood or situation. A resident’s day is filled with meaningful activities that incorporate music, dance, art, aromatherapy, or animals to heal and comfort residents. Creating a Familiar Environment for Someone in Memory Care

December 27, 2023 by Quinn A in Memory care

The transition to a senior living community is difficult for many seniors. Seniors transitioning to memory care face extra difficulties.

A memory loss diagnosis greatly inhibits a senior’s ability to communicate in the same ways they once did. Time feels warped and the day-to-day can often feel confusing and unreliable. While memory care is necessary for many seniors, they may still struggle to get comfortable in their new surroundings. The following tips can help create a more familiar environment for seniors in memory care that eases stress and discomfort.

How to Personalize a Memory Care Space

Many memory care neighborhoods come mostly unfurnished in the expectation that residents and their families can personalize the rooms to their liking. This means you can bring some furniture, accents and beloved items to help your loved one feel more at home.

  1. Personalizing a memory care space takes some planning. First, you’ll want to considerably downsize your loved one’s possessions in their home. They likely won’t have the same amount of space in memory care, so be mindful of what you can and can’t bring. Take your loved one into account and prioritize the things you know they enjoy and would want to have in their new memory care home.

  2. Get crafty by creating shadow boxes or displays of some of their favorite memories or knick knacks. Displaying pictures and other memorabilia is a great way to personalize a memory care space and to make your loved one feel more comfortable in their new home as they are surrounded by familiar things and memories.

Understanding the Need for Memory Care

December 25, 2023 by Quinn A in Memory care

Many families will notice an elderly member of the family begins to be more forgetful. Birthdays may be missed or names forgotten, but this doesn’t necessarily mean they are experiencing dementia or Alzheimer’s.

For those families that have received a memory loss diagnosis, the world seems confusing and dark. Taking Prescription Medications Safely

November 13, 2023 by Quinn A in Memory care

Every year seniors are hospitalized due to prescribed medications. Statistics show drug-related problems are common in older adults and include drug ineffectiveness, adverse drug effects, over-dosage, under-dosage, inappropriate treatment, inadequate monitoring, nonadherence, and drug interactions. It is important to remember even though medication is prescribed by your healthcare provider, problems can occur.

Experts say you must follow directions and take medications as prescribed including on time, in the right dosage, with or without food, and never grinding it into a powder (unless directed by the doctor). They recommend carrying an updated list of all medications and sharing it with your doctors. Additionally, be aware of common interactions between prescribed drugs and over-the-counter medications and alcoholic drinks.

Before your doctor prescribes a new medication, ask them why you are taking it, for how long and what are the potential side effects. It is important to know what to look for and to discuss the benefits versus any negative or dangerous consequences. You will want to know, for example, if a drug will make you drowsy so you know not to drive under its influence.

Another thing to safeguard your health is to review your medications with your doctor on a regular basis asking questions such as: do you still need to take it, is the dosage correct, and is there a non-drug alternative? Despite your faith in your medical team, it is not a bad idea to check your medications against the American Geriatric Society’s “2023 American Geriatrics Society Beers Criteria for Potentially Inappropriate Medication Use in Older Adults.” The online site lists medications that may be inappropriate or dangerous for seniors.

Tips for Meaningful Connection for Those with an Alzheimer’s Diagnosis

August 23, 2023 by Quinn A in Memory care

Consider the most recent immediate connection you had with a close friend, neighbor, or colleague. Often, we make friends with those who share similar backgrounds, interests, and hobbies. Contrary to popular belief, it is no different for someone with dementia or an Alzheimer’s Diagnosis. Everyone wants to feel appreciated and connected to their loved ones and the people around them. At MorningStar Senior Living, we believe that although communication with someone struggling with a memory loss diagnosis may look and feel different, it is still possible. Not only are these connections possible, but with some tips, you can spark a meaningful connection with your loved one again in spite of an Alzheimer’s diagnosis.

In our experience at MorningStar Senior Living and Memory Care, although someone with Alzheimer’s may not remember names or complete aspects of faces, they do remember the emotional experiences they shared with you. Igniting these meaningful collections may mean bringing in photo albums, home videos, and other keepsakes that you two created together. While they may not fully remember the intricate details of the events you share, they remember how these events felt to them, and they will be grateful to experience that with you again.

At MorningStar, we practice holistic memory care methods. This means, accepting our memory care residents as they are. If you are experiencing frustration with your loved one due to repetitive questions or prolonged silence and confusion, it may feel like the connection between you two is gone. Know that this is fear talking, and your loved one is still with you. Let the details go, and enjoy the time and experiences you two can still actively share together.

Nonverbal communication is effective communication. Holding hands, hugs, eye contact, and body movements mean so much when verbal abilities are hindered. Exploring more nonverbal techniques at MorningStar will help you expand this connection further.

Intergenerational Programs are Proving Beneficial for Seniors in Memory Care

May 24, 2023 by Quinn A in Memory care

Intergenerational programs bring together seniors and younger generations, such as children or teenagers, to engage in activities and build relationships. These programs can involve storytelling, crafts, gardening, or shared hobbies. Intergenerational interactions provide seniors with a sense of purpose, foster social connections, and offer opportunities for meaningful engagement. At MorningStar of Littleton, we encourage this holistic memory care approach for seniors in Alzheimer’s care by welcoming senior’s family members regularly into our community in order to foster open communication that encourages memory building and recognition.

Storytelling and reading programs bring generations together in memory care facilities. These programs bring together seniors and children or teenagers for storytelling sessions or reading activities. Seniors can share their life experiences, personal stories, or favorite books with younger participants. This promotes social interaction, encourages communication, and creates a connection through the power of storytelling across generations. This activity is a great way to get everyone involved in our senior living communities.

At MorningStar of Littleton, we are very excited about our community garden and the seniors that work hard to maintain it in our community. We like to encourage our resident’s family members to spend time with their loved ones in the garden to foster intergenerational communication. Gardening brings together seniors and younger individuals to cultivate plants, tend to a garden, or engage in nature-related activities. This allows for shared experiences, learning opportunities, and appreciation for the natural world. Gardening also provides a calming and therapeutic environment for individuals with memory impairments.

Other volunteer programs are available to foster intergenerational communication at MorningStar. Intergenerational volunteer programs, such as skill sharing. Through skill-sharing programs, MorningStar residents have the opportunity to share, practice, and explore activities and skills with other people in the community. This involves workshops, classes, or mentoring individuals who are interested in learning a particular skill or hobby. Skill-sharing programs promote lifelong learning and create a vibrant and inclusive community.

If You’ve Ever Had Chicken Pox, You Can Get Shingles 6/4/2023 0 Comments

May 22, 2023 by Quinn A in Memory care

We have all heard about shingles but many of us are confused as to whether it is contagious and what are the chances we will get it. Experts explain shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which is the same virus that causes chicken pox. Moreover, if you had chickenpox as a child, you are at risk of getting shingles sometime in your life.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports one in three people develop shingles during their lifetime. While this means many will never get shingles, some people get it more than once and others can develop flare-ups periodically throughout their lives. Dr. Michael Urban, a senior lecturer and director of the doctorate of occupational therapy program at the University of New Haven in West Haven, Connecticut, explains flair-ups can be a full range of symptoms or barely noticeable.

Statistics show in recent years younger people are getting shingles but typically the disease occurs in those over 50 years of age and the risk increases the older we get or with various health conditions. People undergoing cancer treatment as well as being ill or under a lot of stress are all at a higher risk for shingles.

Symptoms vary and include feeling like you may have the flu, and/or a red, itchy, painful rash or fluid-filled blisters. Before the rash appears, you may feel an uncomfortable sensation, numbness or tingling, and may be the only symptoms you ever experience. Experts say shingles are not contagious but you can give someone chickenpox if they have never had it; but only if they come in direct contact with the fluid in the blisters such as through a washcloth or bed sheet. To ensure your safety, talk to your doctor about getting a shingles vaccine if you are over the age of 50 or suffer from chronic diseases like renal failure, COPD and diabetes among others.

The Exciting Benefits of Brain Fitness Programs

May 22, 2023 by Quinn A in Memory care

Brain fitness programs are popular Alzheimer’s care therapy in senior living communities. These memory care activities focus on cognitive exercises and puzzles designed to maintain and improve cognitive abilities. These activities may include memory games, puzzles, trivia, and computer-based brain training exercises. Brain fitness programs promote mental agility, enhance memory function, and provide a fun and challenging way to engage seniors. Senior living communities like MorningStar of Littleton incorporate these brain fitness programs for seniors struggling with Alzheimer’s or other memory loss diagnosis.

Brain fitness therapy, also sometimes known as cognitive training, has shown promising benefits for seniors with Alzheimer's disease. This therapy offers a proactive approach to managing Alzheimer's disease by targeting cognitive abilities and providing a range of stimulating activities. It not only enhances cognitive function but also contributes to improved everyday functioning, confidence, social connections, and overall quality of life for seniors with Alzheimer's.

Memory games and puzzles are highly beneficial for seniors with Alzheimer's as they specifically target memory and cognitive abilities. Activities such as crosswords, Sudoku, word searches, and matching games can help stimulate the brain and improve memory recall. These games challenge individuals to focus, concentrate, and engage in problem-solving, which promotes mental agility and cognitive flexibility. Additionally, puzzles and memory games provide a sense of accomplishment when completed, boosting self-esteem and motivation.

Music therapy has shown remarkable benefits for individuals with Alzheimer's disease. Music has a unique ability to evoke emotions and memories, even in those with advanced cognitive decline. Engaging in music-related activities can enhance mood, reduce agitation, and promote cognitive stimulation. Singing songs, playing musical instruments, or listening to familiar tunes can trigger memories and evoke a sense of familiarity and joy. Incorporating rhythmic movements or dance into music sessions adds a physical component, stimulating different areas of the brain. Group music therapy sessions encourage social interaction and provide opportunities for shared experiences, fostering a sense of belonging and connection.

Wandering Is a Big Risk for Those With Dementia

May 17, 2023 by Quinn A in Memory care

The Alzheimer’s Association says that six in 10 people with dementia will wander. The danger with this is someone with Alzheimer’s disease may not remember their name, their address or how to get home. Furthermore, the more agitated the person becomes when they feel lost and disorientated, the less able they may be to tell someone something that could help get them safely back home.

Experts say anyone suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia that is mobile is at risk for wandering. Even if the person is in the early stages of the disease, they may still get disorientated; but thankfully there are strategies to help keep your loved one safe.

It is important to have a plan in place in the event that it should happen to your parents or another loved one. Find out if your area has a “Safe Return Program” and enroll them in it and have them wear a GPS locating device at all times. Also, learn to recognize the warning signs of potential wandering such as: has the person forgotten how to get to familiar places, talks about going home even when they are home, gets confused as to where familiar places in the home are, and acts nervous or anxious in crowded areas.

Tips to help prevent wandering include creating and sticking to a routine, identifying the times when wandering is most likely to occur, and trying to make sure all of the person’s needs are met so they don’t feel the need to go out. In addition, reposition door locks out of the line of sight and make sure car keys are not left out. You can buy a device that sounds an alarm when a door or window is opened; and never leave the person locked in at home or in a car alone.

Along with assisted living, MorningStar of Wheat Ridge offers memory care in a secure environment that allows residents to safely explore their surroundings, including an enclosed patio and courtyard. Balance Exercises Help Seniors Prevent Falls and Maintain Their Independence

May 12, 2023 by Quinn A in Memory care

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s statistics show that more than one in four Americans aged 65 years and older falls each year.  Falls are the leading cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries among older adults, and the number of falls will continue to increase as America’s baby boomers grow older.

While these are worrisome facts, experts say there are some simple exercises seniors can do to help prevent falls and maintain their independence. Remember a common injury caused by an elderly person falling is a hip fracture that can seriously impact their life.

Most balance exercises are easy to learn and can be done anywhere.  The Mayo Clinic explains that while many exercises including walking can help maintain good balance, there are specific exercises targeted at improving a senior’s balance and stability.  They do caution however that if you have severe balance problems or an orthopedic condition, to get your doctor’s okay before starting balance exercises.

Examples of balance exercises include standing on one foot, walking heel to toe, back leg raises, and side leg raises.  To do the standing on one foot exercise, stand behind a sturdy chair; gripping for balance, lift one foot off the floor.  Hold for 10 seconds and then repeat with the opposite leg.  Repeat the exercise several times and increase the repetition as your strength increases.

Walking heel to toe is done by positioning the heel of one foot in front of the toes of the other foot.  Your heel and toes should be touching.  Now select a spot ahead of you and focus on it to help keep you steady as you walk.  Try to step forward for as many as 20 steps.  Be sure to ask your healthcare provider for other balance exercises.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, we promote a healthy engaged lifestyle which includes an onsite fitness room and exercise classes to make it easy for residents to keep moving.  Our various enrichment activities and wellness programs are designed to enhance and support our residents’ physical, mental, spiritual and social connections.  Visit our website to learn more about MorningStar’s assisted living and memory care in Colorado Springs.

This post is for informational purposes only.  Please consult your healthcare provider before starting any exercises.
