Osteoarthritis is More Common in Older Adults

January 08, 2025 by Quinn A in Senior Living

The Lancet journal reports the most common form of arthritis is osteoarthritis (OA); and it is estimated to affect 500 million people worldwide (7% of the global population). In the US, over 32.5 million have OA, or 1 in 5 adults. Of Americans with OA, 70% are over the age of 55; and it is one of the most common causes of disability in adults.

Females are more likely to have OA with many cases occurring after menopause. Research suggests the resulting physiological changes in a woman’s body accounts for the elevated number of cases. Obesity is another risk factor, and may be due to the increased stress on weight-bearing joints. Others are more at risk for OA due to their occupation such as agricultural work, cleaning, construction and carpentry.

OA develops as the cartilage covering the end of a joint bone begins to wear away; and the joint rubs against a rough surface rather than smooth cartilage. With repeated use of a joint and the changes in the tissue over time, the condition is more common in older adults. Pain and stiffness associated with OA can impact a person’s day-to-day life and lead to depression and anxiety as well as make it harder for them to control their weight.

While exercise has been shown to reduce pain in people with OA, it also comes with challenges. Many fear making the pain worse, and instability can cause a person to feel like they may fall or contribute to a lack of range of motion and mobility.

However, exercise can be very beneficial to people with OA. Julie Lombardo, a physical therapist and CEO of Capitol Physical Therapy in Madison, Wisconsin, says, “It’s easy for people who encounter hurdles to give up on exercising when that is the last thing they should do.” Some exercises are better than others for people with OA; and consult with your healthcare provider if you are new to exercise, have high blood pressure or heart disease, or are obese.

Christmas Gifts Sure to be a Hit

January 06, 2025 by Quinn A in Senior Living

We all know how hard it is to buy Christmas or Hanukah gifts for the person in your life who has everything, or is limited on space without the room for yet one more item. This is where gift cards can be greatly appreciated, and with a little bit of research, you can find something for even your most hard to buy family member.

While everyone loves a gift card to an already favorite restaurant or a new one in town, gift cards can also be found for a whole lot of other things. If you are absolutely stumped by what to get, you could settle for a preloaded VISA (or another brand) card that enables the person to shop wherever a VISA card is accepted. Experts say purchasing a virtual card to send through a person’s email account eliminates the risk of a physical card being tampered with, and stick to trusted online retailers. A virtual gift card is also a solution for last minute procrastinators, as they arrive quickly in a person’s inbox.

The Internet provides some unique ideas such as purchasing a MasterClass coupon to a class you know the person has an interest in. With a library of over 200+ classes, the selection ranges from developing better business skills, cultivating a healthy lifestyle, or learning a new talent. For example, get a person who loves to cook a class taught by a renowned chef. If singing or playing an instrument is more their thing, they will welcome a class with a professional musician or singing coach.

For music lovers or gamers a Google Play, Apple or Steam card should be a hit. For your glamour girl, a gift card to Sephora or another of the beauty stores is sure to be redeemed. Big department stores like Nordstrom or Bloomingdale’s also offer gift cards and the selection of what can be bought is extensive. How about movie or play tickets to your local theatre? Once you start researching your choices, you are sure to find the perfect size gift.

At MorningStar of Littleton, we provide trusted senior living Littleton, CO families with 65 assisted living suites and 20 Alzheimers care suites in our distinct Reflections Neighborhood. Amenities include 5-star dining, a bistro, fireside patio, massage room, spa bath and a tropical aquarium. Please contact us to set up a personalized tour of our beautiful community.

Concerned About All the Food Recalls Lately?

January 03, 2025 by Quinn A in Alzheimers Care

It may seem as if you are hearing about food recalls every other week, and you are not too far off. A recent study reports food recalls grew annually from 454 to 547 between the years of 2020 to 2024. Experts say however, one of the reasons for the recalls is actually a good thing as more money is being invested in testing, investigation, identification and tracking systems to help ensure our food safety. Nonetheless Barbara Kowalcyk, director of the Institute for Food Safety and Nutrition Security at George Washington University says it is far from being a perfect system.

Food recalls can be voluntarily pulled off the shelves by the producer or the result of an investigation by the FDA. The reasons for a recall can be because the food is contaminated with bacteria, viruses or parasites. Another cause might be a foreign substance was inadvertently introduced to the product such as broken glass, plastic or metal. The FDA has also instigated a recall due to the fact important allergen information is missing from the packaging.

So what can we do to protect ourselves? For a start, it is good to understand how the system works and why it triggers recalls. Our food chain is more complex than ever as food is often grown, manufactured, packed and distributed by separate companies. The result is more companies are involved, which increases the risk of exposure to contamination.

Kowalcyk recommends thoroughly washing your hands with soap for at least 20 seconds before handling food; and only use clean, sanitary surfaces to prepare the food. Wash produce before using it by running water over it and drying with a paper towel. Remember to follow the rule of keeping raw meat and poultry away from other food. To ensure food is thoroughly cooked, use a food thermometer. When dining out, speak up if food is not properly cooked.

Make Sleep a Priority

January 01, 2025 by Quinn A in Alzheimers Care

One thing we can do to maintain our health as we age is to get a good night’s sleep. Learning to prioritize and manage our sleep is important to good brain health including our cognitive health. However for far too many older adults, it becomes harder and harder to sleep through the night.

Seniors often buy-in to the myth that they no longer need as much sleep as they did when they were younger; but experts disagree. They say the truth is older adults require the same amount of sleep as their younger counterparts, which is at least 7 hours a night according to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).

Moreover studies show older adults are typically getting less REM (rapid eye movement) sleep per night. This is the period of time when we dream and the brain is active; and is important for memory, learning, mental focus and mood.

Another sleep cycle is the period when the brain purges toxins. AARP writes, “The glymphatic system uses cerebrospinal fluid to flush out toxins and waste products, such as amyloid beta.” Not adequately going through this cycle may accelerate the amount of amyloid beta that builds up and clumps together to form plaques; and lack of this slow-wave sleep may increase a person’s risk for Alzheimer’s disease.

Studies also report lack of sleep can affect our emotions. After all, who of us has not felt grumpy or sad when we have not gotten enough sleep? Several long-term studies have shown adults who report poor sleep patterns are more prone to depression. Sleep can even strengthen your immune system.

For the above reasons, it is important to try and improve your sleep quality. If you think stress and anxiety are interfering with your sleep, try mindful practices like keeping a gratitude journal or breathing exercises. Also make a point to get enough physical exercise each day as that too can help you sleep.

The MorningStar of Littleton senior living community offers trusted assisted living with 65 spacious suites across three-stories available in spacious studios and one-and-two-bedrooms. Our distinct Reflections Neighborhood provides Alzheimers care with 20 all-inclusive suites. Contact us to set up a personalized tour to the finest senior living in Littleton, CO.

Want to Keep Your Brain Sharp?

December 30, 2024 by Quinn A in Alzheimers Care

As we age, many of us may feel like we lost a step or two in terms of our cognition and memory skills. However, just as there are things we can do to improve our brain health; there are things we should avoid to protect it. To start with, some of the same things bad for our physical health are bad for our mental health such as lack of exercise and poor diet.

Moreover experts say we may also be missing some lesser known causes that contribute to a decline in cognitive health and impact our chance for better and happier aging.  One of those things is too much negative thinking. The AARP reports several studies have found older adults who are more prone to negative thoughts and spend more time ruminating on slights and grudges are more likely to show a decline in memory and cognitive thinking. Researchers reported study participants who engaged in more negative thinkers had more amyloid and tau deposits in their brain, the biological markers of Alzheimer’s disease.

While we all experience negative thoughts from time to time, it becomes a problem when a person is way too focused on negative thoughts but there are things we can do to change this habit. One step is to make time to feel grateful each day or practice mindfulness using deep breathing exercises. Additionally experts say it helps to find fun things to do like start a new hobby or learn a new skill.

Another thing that can keep our brains sharp is to get routine vaccines. A recent study showed adults over age 65 who had received at least one flu shot, were 40 percent less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease. Another study showed a 25 to 30 percent reduction in Alzheimer’s risk for seniors who have had a pneumonia vaccination.

Other health habits helping to keep the brain sharp include a good night’s sleep, good oral care and moderating alcohol intake. Talk to your healthcare provider if you notice ongoing memory and cognition problems.

The MorningStar of Littleton community has 65 assisted living suites in a choice of studio and one- or two-bedroom floorplans, and 20 Alzheimers care suites in our distinct Reflections Neighborhood. Our unique mission statement “to honor, to value, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities. A Place that Helps You Get Your Independence Back

December 27, 2024 by Quinn A in Memory care

One of the hardest things many seniors face is a chronic illness or condition that interferes and limits their independence. Burdening our spouse or another loved one with our day-to-day care is not the thing most of us want to do. In fact it may be the time to look into assisted living and learn what it can offer to you and your family.

Assisted living is not skilled nursing but rather compassionate senior care for the ADLs (activities of daily living). It is based around the person’s needs to ensure they get the proper support to maintain their independence within a community setting. Senior living communities like MorningStar of Littleton provide residents with responsive 24/7 caregivers, access to licensed nurses, medication management, third-party care providers and more.

Our spacious suites are designed with handicap-accessible bathrooms, emergency call systems and wall-to-wall carpeting in a choice of studio, or one- and two bedroom floorplans. Each unit is equipped with a kitchenette, private heating and air conditioning. Weekly housekeeping, laundry and linen services, and daily spot cleaning and trash removal keep your private suite sparkling.

Along with memory care, residents receive hospitality services such as all-day restaurant-style dining so you no longer have to shop, prepare and cook a meal on your own. Resort-style amenities include things like an onsite salon, bistro, fitness room and chapel/theatre. All-season porches and strolling paths encourage you to enjoy the beautiful Colorado weather. We are also pet friendly (please read our pet policy)

MorningStar of Littleton additionally offers trusted Alzheimer’s care in our distinct Reflections Neighborhood based on Lavender Sky, our programmatic approach to Memory Care. Women and Health Disease

December 25, 2024 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Despite a long-held belief that more men are affected by and even die from heart disease, the American Health Association says we now know that is only half the story. Recent studies show more women die from heart disease than from all forms of cancer. Perimenopause and post-menopausal women are at the most risk from heart disease, and the older they get, the higher the risk. Doctors say the drop in estrogen that occurs in women during and after menopause is why older women have a higher risk for cardiovascular disease.

Robin Noble, MD, a board-certified OB/GYN, explains before menopause, estrogen has a vasodilatory effect on the vascular system. This anti-inflammatory effect fights against the development of the type of inflammation that causes cardiovascular plaques. Once a woman’s body experiences a drop in estrogen, it creates problems such as higher cholesterol levels, higher blood pressure and an increase in visceral fat – all linked to plaque buildup and hardening of the arteries.

The Medical News Today’s experts weigh-in on what post-menopausal women can do to protect their health. The top recommendation involves adopting a healthy lifestyle such as increasing exercise, managing stress, maintaining a healthy weight and eating a more plant-based diet. Moderating your alcohol consumption and not smoking are also important.

If you are at risk for cardiovascular disease or already living with it, you need to work with your healthcare providers. In addition to adopting healthier lifestyle habits, one course of treatment is hormone-replacement therapy (HRT). It can be an effective way to reduce the risk of heart disease at this time of life.

At MorningStar of Littleton, we are honored to provide seniors a carefree retirement with trusted assisted living and memory care. Making Lasting Friendships in Assisted Living

December 23, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Seniors can often feel anxious before moving into assisted living. For many, they have spent their life up to this point living on their own, with a loved one, or with their families. It can be intimidating to start this new chapter. But, you don’t have to do it alone.

At MorningStar Senior Living you will meet friendly neighbors and staff that will strive to make you feel right at home. As a community, we believe in the power of community. Here are a few tips to help you make lasting friendships in assisted living.

Introduce Yourself

The simplest way to meet new people is to introduce yourself. It’s likely your neighbors will want to meet you upon your move-in, but for others in the community, the first step to the road of lasting friendship is to say hello and share a little about yourself. A warm smile, a compliment, or asking someone if they’d like to join you for coffee is a great idea when trying to make new friends in your senior living community.

Join Community Activities and Events

MorningStar offers a variety of events and activities designed to bring residents together. From game nights and exercise classes to gardening clubs and crafting workshops, these activities provide a relaxed environment to meet others who share your interests. Bonding over similar hobbies is a popular way to make new friends. You can even invite others over to continue the activity in your room later on.

Events are another way you can meet new people. Holidays and other community celebrations are a great excuse to mingle with your neighbors and get to know our wonderful staff. At MorningStar Senior Living, our mission is to create a community where everyone can thrive, celebrate life, and make lasting connections. How To Stay Active Without Leaving Home

December 20, 2024 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Many seniors say they want to live active lifestyles. While it is true that seniors in assisted living may have decreased mobility, assisted living communities regularly advocate for senior friendly exercise options that are easy and low-impact. Whether you are in your room alone, or with a group at MorningStar Senior Living, you can begin to see a healthier version of you with these simple activities.

Chair Exercises

Active assisted living homes take pride in offering exercise options for seniors. Chair exercises are great because there is low commitment, but a huge reward for seniors. Chair exercises are perfect for seniors to improve mobility and build strength. Exercises like leg lifts, arm raises, and gentle stretches are a few things seniors can do if they are experiencing decreased mobility or feel anxious about utilizing machines at a gym.

Yoga and Stretching Exercises for Seniors

At MorningStar Assisted Living, seniors love participating in our free exercise classes. Yoga and stretching are great ways to stay active and improve flexibility. Not only this, but yoga and mindful stretching are great for relaxation and trying to mitigate pain or soreness. You don’t need fancy equipment to do yoga, either. Just get a comfortable chair or floor mat and you can begin to stretch in the privacy of your own home or in your senior living community.

Doing Chores

Did you know doing chores around the house can actually burn calories? It’s true! Tidying up around your home, sweeping, folding towels, and doing laundry are just some of the ways you can stay active around the house without having to join a gym. Not only do you get to complete some tasks, but you get to feel great while doing it!

Maintaining Good Balance as You Age

December 16, 2024 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Falls among senior citizens are all too common, and in many cases, threaten a person’s independence and way of life. Injuries from falls include to the head, hip fractures, and in extreme cases lead to death; and poor balance is one of the reasons people fall.

Experts explain a person’s balance declines with age due to loss of sensory elements, the ability to integrate information and issue motor commands; and loss of musculoskeletal function as well as poor vision and inner ear problems. Certain medications and common medical conditions in older adults can also cause problems. Balance begins to decline in midlife, starting at about age 50. In one study, adults in their 30s and 40s could stand on one foot for a minute or more. By age 50, the time decreased to 45 seconds.

The National Institute on Aging (NIH) explains maintaining good balance as you age and learning about fall prevention can help you get around, stay independent, and carry out daily activities. Targeted exercises like walking, strength training and workouts designed to improve stability are some of the best ways to improve balance. Consult with your doctor as to whether a physical therapist or other professional could help design suitable exercises to improve your balance.

Also talk to your doctor about any dietary changes you should make if your balance problems are due to high or low blood pressure. Something as simple as eating less salt, maintaining a healthy weight and exercising may help with high blood pressure.

If you have low blood pressure and experience dizziness, do not stand up too quickly, drink plenty of fluids such as water and avoid alcohol. Your doctor may need to evaluate if it is safe for you to drive. To reduce your risk of falling, avoid walking in the dark, wear low-heeled, rubber-soled shoes; and if you need a mobility aid such as a cane or walker, use it.

If you are looking for outstanding assisted living or memory care, MorningStar of Wheat Ridge offers a true home distinguished by comfort, wellness and love. Living with Alzheimer’s Disease

December 16, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

While a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s for yourself or a loved one is hard to hear, it is important to become informed because what we do early on can help guide future decisions. The Alzheimer’s Association is a great resource to become familiar with and offers topics ranging from Alzheimer’s symptoms to caregiving and medical breakthroughs. It is also one of the biggest fundraising organizations and supports the “Walk to End Alzheimer’s” and the “Longest Day” activities.

Experts say it is important to remember you are not alone. Over six million people in the US are living with Alzheimer’s and millions more know someone with the disease. Although everyone experiences the disease in their own unique way, understanding the major stages of the disease helps families navigate this unexpected journey.

Alzheimer’s five distinct stages include: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI); Mild; Moderate; Severe; and Very Severe. Symptoms can vary from person to person but the various stages of Alzheimer’s disease have some common characteristics and it helps to be prepared.

To help negate the feeling of being a complete victim of your circumstances, studies show there are lifestyle changes you can make in the early stages to help improve brain health. These include exercising and eating a healthy diet as well as avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. This is also the time to think about future financial, medical and legal decisions.

The early stages are additionally the time to build a support network and to stay engaged with friends and family. Get in the habit of using memory aids such as sticky notes or digital aids for your appointments and activities. If you find you are getting confused paying bills, keeping track of medications or having a hard time making appointments, ask for help.

Be sure to keep up with all your medical appointments including adding an Alzheimer’s specialist to your healthcare team. Ask your doctors about local organizations and services that may be helpful to you and your family now and later.

Along with assisted living, Colorado Springs’ MorningStar at Mountain Shadows has 19 suites devoted to the care of those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Our holistic care is individualized for each resident and designed to stimulate or calm in response to a particular mood or situation.  Each day is filled with activities that incorporate music, dance, art, aromatherapy, or animals to heal and comfort residents.  Visit our website for more information about our compassionate, loving memory care.

Assisted Living Provides Seniors a Vibrant and Supportive Environment

December 13, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Way too often people have misconceptions about senior living communities and specifically assisted living. They think of the nursing facility where their grandparents may have spent their last years and don’t want to put themselves or an older loved one into something like that. After all, haven’t we all earned a happy retirement?

Today’s assisted living communities are just that – a community. They provide a productive lifestyle with social interactions, safety and the proper support a person needs to help maintain their independence. Many also offer resort-style amenities like all-day, restaurant –style dining; housekeeping, fitness centers, salons, bistros and in-house theatres and chapels to give seniors a vibrant community to safely age in place.

Furthermore, many older adults living alone say they feel socially isolated and lonely, which can put them at an increased risk for depression, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and more. When seniors move to an assisted living community such as MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, they have opportunities to engage in wellness programs, activities and special events. Examples from MorningStar’s monthly calendar include Empower Me Exercise, Chair Yoga, Scenic Drive, Tea and Trivia, Holiday Card Making, Flower Arranging, Poker Club, Board Games and more. Seniors also find it easier to eat healthy as they no longer need to shop, prepare, cook and clean-up meals.

Another reason assisted living can make sense is that seniors find their current home requires expensive modifications to make it safe for them. Throughout MorningStar’s community, the physical environment is designed to help residents stay safe and prevent falls. Suites are equipped with handicapped-accessible bathrooms and 24/7 emergency call systems; and have lots of lighting and large windows. Dedicated care managers are always available to lend a hand when needed, and provide compassionate help with the ADLs (activities of daily living).

To learn more about MorningStar’s assisted living in Colorado Springs and whether it is the right decision for you or a loved one, we encourage you to contact us to set up a tour. We look forward to hearing from you.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. We also consider residents’ family members to be part of our MorningStar family as we walk alongside the memory-impaired and their families on this unexpected journey.  Our unique approach to memory care is called Lavender Sky, which is how we thoughtfully enter, embrace and explore the entirely different and isolating world of memory loss.

Before the resident joins our community, we take the time to get to know them through interviews with their family members to learn about their history, vocation, talents and preferences.  We then use this knowledge to help us design an individualized care plan that takes all of this into consideration.

Every aspect of our memory care is designed to address the needs of our residents including 24/7 compassionate Care Mangers, wellness programs and activities that will stimulate and calm as needed.  In addition, our Reflections Neighborhood provides daily health monitoring, assistance with meals prepared by our Executive Chef, scheduled outings and special events.

Our memory care suites accommodate a resident’s own furniture and mementos so they are sure to feel right at home. For residents’ safety, suites are equipped with handicapped-accessible bathrooms and emergency call systems.  Please contact us or visit our website for more information about MorningStar and our community in Wheat Ridge.

MorningStar is guided by a culture rooted in our mission of honoring God, valuing seniors, and investing in our team, which allows us to deliver services with warmth, sincerity and depth of purpose. We have built a reputation for creating homes filled with an atmosphere of love and community. Please contact us to learn more about the finest assisted living and memory care in Wheat Ridge, CO.

Treating Hearing Loss May Reduce the Risk of Developing Dementia

December 11, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

JAMA Neurology added to the growing body of evidence showing a link between hearing loss and cognitive impairment. The study found treating hearing loss with hearing aids may reduce the risk of developing dementia by up to 19%. In fact, researchers say hearing loss may be the biggest treatable factor for dementia. An article in AARP explains what may cause the link between hearing loss and dementia.

The first theory regards socialization. Scientists say once a person starts having more difficulty being in a group of people and following the conversation, they may avoid such social gatherings. This in turn can lead to isolation, which is problematic as less social engagement as well as less cognitively stimulating activities and depression are risk factors for dementia.

Secondly, coping with hearing loss means the person is constantly working to sort out sounds and make sense of what is being said. The brain now may have “fewer resources (brain power) to help preserve thinking and memory abilities.” Scientists also believe hearing loss causes the brain to be less stimulated with sound information, which is linked with parts of the brain shrinking and atrophying faster with chronic deprivation.

While experts agree we still need more studies regarding the link between hearing loss and a higher risk for dementia, they do know that addressing a hearing issue with hearing aids is beneficial for the person’s overall quality of life. Moreover, there are no negative medical issues associated with the devices.

MorningStar at Mountain Shadows is a senior community offering assisted living residents a broad range of amenities and services.  In addition, we provide care to those living with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia. Respecting the Independence of Aging Parents

December 11, 2024 by Quinn A in senior apartments

We all understand the value of independence but as we grow older, many seniors are faced with physical and mental limitations that make them feel it may be threatened. Independence is one of the things seniors want to feel they still have control over; and is important as it is closely tied to self-worth and a sense of achievement.

Experts say well-intentional families can sometimes create bigger problems by becoming overprotective toward mom or dad. This can result in the senior becoming more fearful than the situation warrants, and erode their self-esteem and confidence. Another problem threatening a senior’s independence is when adult children talk to the parent as if they are a child. Even the most conscientious caregivers can sometimes baby the person too much or pressure them to do what they think is best.

Just as we do not want people telling us what to do or intruding into things we are not ready to share, you need to respect your parents’ privacy. When mom or dad’s wishes are respected, they will feel like they have more control of their lives. If a time comes when your parents need more help than they can get at home, it may be time to consider an assisted living community. Just be sure it is one where their independence will be nurtured.

What sets MorningStar of Wheat Ridge apart from other assisted living and memory care communities? We strive to provide a true home for our residents and have a team committed to serving seniors who treat them with the dignity and respect they deserve.  Our beautiful community is designed to meet all the needs of our residents with a range of luxury amenities, care services, wellness programs, and activities.  Please contact us for more information about exceptional senior apartments at MorningStar.

Happiness is an Important Component to Maintaining Physical Health

December 09, 2024 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Happiness not only makes us feel good but may also be good for us. Research shows happiness is an important component to maintaining physical health, and is linked to lowering the risk of stroke, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. Along with better health, people, who report they are happy, tend to live longer.

Being happy can help us eat better, maintain a normal body weight and allow us to get a better night’s sleep. It can encourage people to be more active and reduce stress.  In fact, there is an understanding that the mind-body connection is stronger than we thought and unmanaged stress can lead to or exacerbate many health conditions.

Don’t feel like you are all that happy? No problem. Experts say there are things we can do to cultivate happiness, and improve our outlook on life as well as our physical health. Some of these things include forming and maintaining uplifting connections, practicing gratitude and mindfulness, and taking the time to appreciate the beautiful moments of life.

Expressing gratitude has been shown to be an excellent deterrent to depression and anxiety. Dr. Robert Emmons, a renowned researcher in the science of gratitude, says, “Gratitude is literally one of the few things that can measurably change people’s lives.” He adds it encourages feelings of joy, love and optimism and reduces feelings of envy and resentment. One way to cultivate gratitude is to daily journal at least one thing you are grateful for as writing it down appears to reinforce your feelings.

The practice of mindfulness is another way to bring more happiness into our life. It helps cultivate a deeper connection with our inner self, and improves mental health by reducing stress and anxiety. The National Institute of Health explains practicing mindfulness is as easy as breathing through your nose to a count of 4, holding for 1 second and then exhaling through the mouth to a count of 5. Repeat often. The Internet has other techniques for mindfulness practices.

MorningStar at Mountain Shadows is a welcoming place with the promise of new friendships as well as the leisure to pursue new interests or rekindle old ones. Taking Care of Your Eyes

December 04, 2024 by Quinn A in senior living

Did you know it is estimated 895 million people worldwide will have some level of vision impairment by 2050. The Lancet reports it signals a 150 percent increase over the next 30 years and includes loss of vision from cataracts and glaucoma. Experts say while many vision problems can be treated, in some cases they can also be prevented by adopting simple, healthy habits.

If you have already gotten into the habit of wearing sunscreen and a sun-blocking hat when you are outdoors for any period, optometrists say you need to complete your protection by making sure to wear protective sunglasses. Exposure to UV increases our risk for cataracts and your sunglasses should have a label reading “100 percent protection from UV and UVB rays” or “100 percent protection against UV 400.”  If you are outside working for long hours, consider wrap-around style sunglasses, and if you are doing work such as trimming bushes or chopping wood, be sure to wear safety sunglasses.

As the risk for eye diseases increases as we age, the National Institute on Aging recommends having your eyes checked regularly by an ophthalmologist or optometrist. For those over age 50, you should get a dilated eye exam every year or as recommended by your eye care professional. Regardless of age, most people with diabetes or high blood pressure need to get a dilated exam at least once a year.

Other ways to protect your eyes as you age is to eat a balanced diet with lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. Additionally, stop smoking, maintain a healthy weight and stay physically active. If you do have high blood pressure or diabetes, you need to learn how to manage them and follow your doctor’s guidelines.

Some Lifestyle Habits Can Increase Your Risk of Developing Arthritis

December 02, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Many people assume arthritis comes with aging, but experts say while joint pain is common in older adults, arthritis is not a normal part of aging. The CDC explains arthritis is a group of more than 100 conditions causing inflammation and swelling in the joints or nearby tissues with symptoms such as pain and stiffness. Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis and mostly occurs in older adults (about 70% are 55 years and older). Other common types of arthritis are rheumatoid arthritis and gout.

While there is not a cure for arthritis, there are treatments, medications and therapies. In addition, studies find healthy lifestyle habits can help manage symptoms of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout as well as lessen your risk for even getting it. For example, the CDC reports 40% of people with arthritis can decrease pain and improve function by being physically active.

Osteoarthritis is the breakdown of the cartilage of the joints causing bones to rub against one another resulting in pain and difficulty moving the joint.  Experts say millions of cases could be prevented by avoiding excessive weight gain. Exercising regularly and doing resistance training is another way to avoid injury to the joints.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic condition causing inflammation and swelling in joints. It can misshape, misalign and damage joints; and if it is in one knee or hand, it is typically on the other hand or knee. Recommendations to reduce your risk for RA include avoiding tobacco. Gingivitis, or gum inflammation, is linked to several health conditions including RA; and prevention includes improving oral health with good hygiene and dental visits.

Gout is another common form of arthritis and occurs when crystals of uric acid are deposited in one or more joints. People with gout experience pain, swelling and redness in the affected joints. Experts say eating a healthy diet, limiting alcohol, and staying well hydrated are good steps to reduce your risk. If you are overweight, lose weight and if possible avoid diuretics (discuss all medication changes with your doctor). Studies show regardless of what type of arthritis you have, early diagnosis and treatment can make a big difference in your future joint health.
