Making Lasting Friendships in Assisted Living

December 23, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Seniors can often feel anxious before moving into assisted living. For many, they have spent their life up to this point living on their own, with a loved one, or with their families. It can be intimidating to start this new chapter. But, you don’t have to do it alone.

At MorningStar Senior Living you will meet friendly neighbors and staff that will strive to make you feel right at home. As a community, we believe in the power of community. Here are a few tips to help you make lasting friendships in assisted living.

Introduce Yourself

The simplest way to meet new people is to introduce yourself. It’s likely your neighbors will want to meet you upon your move-in, but for others in the community, the first step to the road of lasting friendship is to say hello and share a little about yourself. A warm smile, a compliment, or asking someone if they’d like to join you for coffee is a great idea when trying to make new friends in your senior living community.

Join Community Activities and Events

MorningStar offers a variety of events and activities designed to bring residents together. From game nights and exercise classes to gardening clubs and crafting workshops, these activities provide a relaxed environment to meet others who share your interests. Bonding over similar hobbies is a popular way to make new friends. You can even invite others over to continue the activity in your room later on.

Events are another way you can meet new people. Holidays and other community celebrations are a great excuse to mingle with your neighbors and get to know our wonderful staff. At MorningStar Senior Living, our mission is to create a community where everyone can thrive, celebrate life, and make lasting connections. After a few weeks with us, you’ll find that friendships form naturally. There’s no denying that this new chapter will be joyful and fulfilling.

How to Know When Your Parent Needs Assisted Living

August 21, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

It’s hard as an adult child to recognize when our parents need to readjust their living arrangements due to their age or health. Our parents have always been a representation of strength and support, so what signs should you be on the lookout for to know when it’s time for assisted living?

Below are some ways to know when your aging parents may need assisted living.

Some major signs that your parents needs care include:

Noticing incomplete chores. This can include a growing amount of clutter around the home, garbage or food being left out, pets being fed less regularly, yard work not being maintained, or any other unfamiliar habit that has to do with the regular organization of their home.

Drastic weight changes. Weight tends to fluctuate as we age, but if you witness a noticeable change in your parents’ body weight, it may be time to speak with a healthcare provider or specialist. It may be becoming difficult for them to prepare meals, leading to eating an excess of processed or fast foods. Alternatively, they may forget to eat, letting groceries go bad or run out, making it difficult for them to eat a complete meal.

Safety Concerns. If you’ve recently visited with your parents and are noticing more scrapes, bruises, burns, or cuts, it may be a sign that  care may be necessary, especially if they’re living alone. While it is true that our mobility and balance can decrease as we age, continuously experiencing falls or other accidents can significantly impact a senior’s health. Finding a safe environment is the best way to prevent serious injuries.
