Women and Health Disease

December 25, 2024 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Despite a long-held belief that more men are affected by and even die from heart disease, the American Health Association says we now know that is only half the story. Recent studies show more women die from heart disease than from all forms of cancer. Perimenopause and post-menopausal women are at the most risk from heart disease, and the older they get, the higher the risk. Doctors say the drop in estrogen that occurs in women during and after menopause is why older women have a higher risk for cardiovascular disease.

Robin Noble, MD, a board-certified OB/GYN, explains before menopause, estrogen has a vasodilatory effect on the vascular system. This anti-inflammatory effect fights against the development of the type of inflammation that causes cardiovascular plaques. Once a woman’s body experiences a drop in estrogen, it creates problems such as higher cholesterol levels, higher blood pressure and an increase in visceral fat – all linked to plaque buildup and hardening of the arteries.

The Medical News Today’s experts weigh-in on what post-menopausal women can do to protect their health. The top recommendation involves adopting a healthy lifestyle such as increasing exercise, managing stress, maintaining a healthy weight and eating a more plant-based diet. Moderating your alcohol consumption and not smoking are also important.

If you are at risk for cardiovascular disease or already living with it, you need to work with your healthcare providers. In addition to adopting healthier lifestyle habits, one course of treatment is hormone-replacement therapy (HRT). It can be an effective way to reduce the risk of heart disease at this time of life.

Making Lasting Friendships in Assisted Living

December 23, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Seniors can often feel anxious before moving into assisted living. For many, they have spent their life up to this point living on their own, with a loved one, or with their families. It can be intimidating to start this new chapter. But, you don’t have to do it alone.

At MorningStar Senior Living you will meet friendly neighbors and staff that will strive to make you feel right at home. As a community, we believe in the power of community. Here are a few tips to help you make lasting friendships in assisted living.

Introduce Yourself

The simplest way to meet new people is to introduce yourself. It’s likely your neighbors will want to meet you upon your move-in, but for others in the community, the first step to the road of lasting friendship is to say hello and share a little about yourself. A warm smile, a compliment, or asking someone if they’d like to join you for coffee is a great idea when trying to make new friends in your senior living community.

Join Community Activities and Events

MorningStar offers a variety of events and activities designed to bring residents together. From game nights and exercise classes to gardening clubs and crafting workshops, these activities provide a relaxed environment to meet others who share your interests. Bonding over similar hobbies is a popular way to make new friends. You can even invite others over to continue the activity in your room later on.

Events are another way you can meet new people. Holidays and other community celebrations are a great excuse to mingle with your neighbors and get to know our wonderful staff. At MorningStar Senior Living, our mission is to create a community where everyone can thrive, celebrate life, and make lasting connections. After a few weeks with us, you’ll find that friendships form naturally. There’s no denying that this new chapter will be joyful and fulfilling.

How To Stay Active Without Leaving Home

December 20, 2024 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Many seniors say they want to live active lifestyles. While it is true that seniors in assisted living may have decreased mobility, assisted living communities regularly advocate for senior friendly exercise options that are easy and low-impact. Whether you are in your room alone, or with a group at MorningStar Senior Living, you can begin to see a healthier version of you with these simple activities.

Chair Exercises

Active assisted living homes take pride in offering exercise options for seniors. Chair exercises are great because there is low commitment, but a huge reward for seniors. Chair exercises are perfect for seniors to improve mobility and build strength. Exercises like leg lifts, arm raises, and gentle stretches are a few things seniors can do if they are experiencing decreased mobility or feel anxious about utilizing machines at a gym.

Yoga and Stretching Exercises for Seniors

At MorningStar Assisted Living, seniors love participating in our free exercise classes. Yoga and stretching are great ways to stay active and improve flexibility. Not only this, but yoga and mindful stretching are great for relaxation and trying to mitigate pain or soreness. You don’t need fancy equipment to do yoga, either. Just get a comfortable chair or floor mat and you can begin to stretch in the privacy of your own home or in your senior living community.

Doing Chores

Did you know doing chores around the house can actually burn calories? It’s true! Tidying up around your home, sweeping, folding towels, and doing laundry are just some of the ways you can stay active around the house without having to join a gym. Not only do you get to complete some tasks, but you get to feel great while doing it!

Top 4 Easy Hobbies for Seniors to Try this Year

December 18, 2024 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Retirement offers seniors a lot of time to slow-down, relax, and contemplate their wants and goals for the rest of their lives. While many seniors still remain active, they now have the time to learn new hobbies and skills. Senior living communities are great places for seniors to learn about their passions and interests. Whether you want to explore these hobbies alone or in a groupo, MorningStar Senior Living encourages every one to try some of these easy hobbies for seniors!

Bird Watching

Seniors find bird watching a very rewarding experience. Not only do you get to spend some time outdoors, but bird watching can even be done with friends or in a group. It doesn’t take much to begin to feel connected with nature. Just grab a pair of binoculars and an easy bird guide and you can begin to identify all sorts of birds right outside your home. The relaxation and excitement is enough to keep seniors feeling energized and amazed.

Puzzles and Board Games

Table-top games don’t have to be boring. In fact, seniors find that puzzles and other board games help them feel sharp as they exercise their brain. Board games can be individual or done in a group, which is great for seniors in active senior living communities that enjoy building friendships and socializing.

Mindful Coloring Exercises

Many adults and seniors enjoy coloring. Mindfulness techniques like coloring is very popular for seniors as it allows them to relax and express their creativity. It is often a low-cost hobby, too. You can explore many different types of coloring books to find the right fit for you!

Gardening

Many of our senior living communities actually have an on-site community garden. This makes gardening a very popular hobby around MorningStar Senior Living. You can work in the garden with others or spend some time on your own checking in on your veggies and fruits. Maintaining Good Balance as You Age

December 16, 2024 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Falls among senior citizens are all too common, and in many cases, threaten a person’s independence and way of life. Injuries from falls include to the head, hip fractures, and in extreme cases lead to death; and poor balance is one of the reasons people fall.

Experts explain a person’s balance declines with age due to loss of sensory elements, the ability to integrate information and issue motor commands; and loss of musculoskeletal function as well as poor vision and inner ear problems. Certain medications and common medical conditions in older adults can also cause problems. Balance begins to decline in midlife, starting at about age 50. In one study, adults in their 30s and 40s could stand on one foot for a minute or more. By age 50, the time decreased to 45 seconds.

The National Institute on Aging (NIH) explains maintaining good balance as you age and learning about fall prevention can help you get around, stay independent, and carry out daily activities. Targeted exercises like walking, strength training and workouts designed to improve stability are some of the best ways to improve balance. Consult with your doctor as to whether a physical therapist or other professional could help design suitable exercises to improve your balance.

Also talk to your doctor about any dietary changes you should make if your balance problems are due to high or low blood pressure. Something as simple as eating less salt, maintaining a healthy weight and exercising may help with high blood pressure.

If you have low blood pressure and experience dizziness, do not stand up too quickly, drink plenty of fluids such as water and avoid alcohol. Your doctor may need to evaluate if it is safe for you to drive. To reduce your risk of falling, avoid walking in the dark, wear low-heeled, rubber-soled shoes; and if you need a mobility aid such as a cane or walker, use it.

If you are looking for outstanding assisted living or memory care, MorningStar of Wheat Ridge offers a true home distinguished by comfort, wellness and love. Living with Alzheimer’s Disease

December 16, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

While a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s for yourself or a loved one is hard to hear, it is important to become informed because what we do early on can help guide future decisions. The Alzheimer’s Association is a great resource to become familiar with and offers topics ranging from Alzheimer’s symptoms to caregiving and medical breakthroughs. It is also one of the biggest fundraising organizations and supports the “Walk to End Alzheimer’s” and the “Longest Day” activities.

Experts say it is important to remember you are not alone. Over six million people in the US are living with Alzheimer’s and millions more know someone with the disease. Although everyone experiences the disease in their own unique way, understanding the major stages of the disease helps families navigate this unexpected journey.

Alzheimer’s five distinct stages include: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI); Mild; Moderate; Severe; and Very Severe. Symptoms can vary from person to person but the various stages of Alzheimer’s disease have some common characteristics and it helps to be prepared.

To help negate the feeling of being a complete victim of your circumstances, studies show there are lifestyle changes you can make in the early stages to help improve brain health. These include exercising and eating a healthy diet as well as avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. This is also the time to think about future financial, medical and legal decisions.

The early stages are additionally the time to build a support network and to stay engaged with friends and family. Get in the habit of using memory aids such as sticky notes or digital aids for your appointments and activities. If you find you are getting confused paying bills, keeping track of medications or having a hard time making appointments, ask for help.

Be sure to keep up with all your medical appointments including adding an Alzheimer’s specialist to your healthcare team. Ask your doctors about local organizations and services that may be helpful to you and your family now and later.

Along with assisted living, Colorado Springs’ MorningStar at Mountain Shadows has 19 suites devoted to the care of those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Our holistic care is individualized for each resident and designed to stimulate or calm in response to a particular mood or situation.  Each day is filled with activities that incorporate music, dance, art, aromatherapy, or animals to heal and comfort residents.  Visit our website for more information about our compassionate, loving memory care.

Assisted Living Provides Seniors a Vibrant and Supportive Environment

December 13, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Way too often people have misconceptions about senior living communities and specifically assisted living. They think of the nursing facility where their grandparents may have spent their last years and don’t want to put themselves or an older loved one into something like that. After all, haven’t we all earned a happy retirement?

Today’s assisted living communities are just that – a community. They provide a productive lifestyle with social interactions, safety and the proper support a person needs to help maintain their independence. Many also offer resort-style amenities like all-day, restaurant –style dining; housekeeping, fitness centers, salons, bistros and in-house theatres and chapels to give seniors a vibrant community to safely age in place.

Furthermore, many older adults living alone say they feel socially isolated and lonely, which can put them at an increased risk for depression, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and more. When seniors move to an assisted living community such as MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, they have opportunities to engage in wellness programs, activities and special events. Examples from MorningStar’s monthly calendar include Empower Me Exercise, Chair Yoga, Scenic Drive, Tea and Trivia, Holiday Card Making, Flower Arranging, Poker Club, Board Games and more. Seniors also find it easier to eat healthy as they no longer need to shop, prepare, cook and clean-up meals.

Another reason assisted living can make sense is that seniors find their current home requires expensive modifications to make it safe for them. Throughout MorningStar’s community, the physical environment is designed to help residents stay safe and prevent falls. Suites are equipped with handicapped-accessible bathrooms and 24/7 emergency call systems; and have lots of lighting and large windows. Dedicated care managers are always available to lend a hand when needed, and provide compassionate help with the ADLs (activities of daily living).

To learn more about MorningStar’s assisted living in Colorado Springs and whether it is the right decision for you or a loved one, we encourage you to contact us to set up a tour. We look forward to hearing from you.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. December 13, 2024 by Quinn A in Memory care

Getting a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or another dementia-related disease is devastating for the person and their family.  All of one’s carefully laid plans are cast aside as their future takes a much different path.  MorningStar of Wheat Ridge wants families to know we are here to help.

We are an assisted living and memory care community in a northern suburb of Denver, close to medical facilities, shopping, and other services.  Our community is one of MorningStar’s 40+ communities across eleven states, where we have worked hard to become dementia care specialists.

MorningStar’s extensive experience in memory care has allowed us to gain a deep understanding of the disease, and we consider it our privilege to serve those with memory loss.  We recognize that the person’s essence remains and we are committed to finding ways to connect with and nurture that essence.

We also consider residents’ family members to be part of our MorningStar family as we walk alongside the memory-impaired and their families on this unexpected journey.  Our unique approach to memory care is called Lavender Sky, which is how we thoughtfully enter, embrace and explore the entirely different and isolating world of memory loss.

Before the resident joins our community, we take the time to get to know them through interviews with their family members to learn about their history, vocation, talents and preferences.  We then use this knowledge to help us design an individualized care plan that takes all of this into consideration.

Every aspect of our memory care is designed to address the needs of our residents including 24/7 compassionate Care Mangers, wellness programs and activities that will stimulate and calm as needed.  In addition, our Reflections Neighborhood provides daily health monitoring, assistance with meals prepared by our Executive Chef, scheduled outings and special events.

Our memory care suites accommodate a resident’s own furniture and mementos so they are sure to feel right at home. For residents’ safety, suites are equipped with handicapped-accessible bathrooms and emergency call systems.  Please contact us or visit our website for more information about MorningStar and our community in Wheat Ridge.

Treating Hearing Loss May Reduce the Risk of Developing Dementia

December 11, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

JAMA Neurology added to the growing body of evidence showing a link between hearing loss and cognitive impairment. The study found treating hearing loss with hearing aids may reduce the risk of developing dementia by up to 19%. In fact, researchers say hearing loss may be the biggest treatable factor for dementia. An article in AARP explains what may cause the link between hearing loss and dementia.

The first theory regards socialization. Scientists say once a person starts having more difficulty being in a group of people and following the conversation, they may avoid such social gatherings. This in turn can lead to isolation, which is problematic as less social engagement as well as less cognitively stimulating activities and depression are risk factors for dementia.

Secondly, coping with hearing loss means the person is constantly working to sort out sounds and make sense of what is being said. The brain now may have “fewer resources (brain power) to help preserve thinking and memory abilities.” Scientists also believe hearing loss causes the brain to be less stimulated with sound information, which is linked with parts of the brain shrinking and atrophying faster with chronic deprivation.

While experts agree we still need more studies regarding the link between hearing loss and a higher risk for dementia, they do know that addressing a hearing issue with hearing aids is beneficial for the person’s overall quality of life. Moreover, there are no negative medical issues associated with the devices.

MorningStar at Mountain Shadows is a senior community offering assisted living residents a broad range of amenities and services.  In addition, we provide care to those living with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia. Our memory care is designed around the needs of residents through Lavender Sky, MorningStar’s signature philosophy and approach to dementia care, which incorporates Montessori-based therapies to help elevate and celebrate life. For outstanding senior living in Colorado Springs, please contact us or visit our website for more information.

Respecting the Independence of Aging Parents

December 11, 2024 by Quinn A in senior apartments

We all understand the value of independence but as we grow older, many seniors are faced with physical and mental limitations that make them feel it may be threatened. Independence is one of the things seniors want to feel they still have control over; and is important as it is closely tied to self-worth and a sense of achievement.

Experts say well-intentional families can sometimes create bigger problems by becoming overprotective toward mom or dad. This can result in the senior becoming more fearful than the situation warrants, and erode their self-esteem and confidence. Another problem threatening a senior’s independence is when adult children talk to the parent as if they are a child. Even the most conscientious caregivers can sometimes baby the person too much or pressure them to do what they think is best.

Just as we do not want people telling us what to do or intruding into things we are not ready to share, you need to respect your parents’ privacy. When mom or dad’s wishes are respected, they will feel like they have more control of their lives. If a time comes when your parents need more help than they can get at home, it may be time to consider an assisted living community. Just be sure it is one where their independence will be nurtured.

What sets MorningStar of Wheat Ridge apart from other assisted living and memory care communities? We strive to provide a true home for our residents and have a team committed to serving seniors who treat them with the dignity and respect they deserve.  Our beautiful community is designed to meet all the needs of our residents with a range of luxury amenities, care services, wellness programs, and activities.  Please contact us for more information about exceptional senior apartments at MorningStar.

MorningStar has considered it a privilege and responsibility to “cast a new light” on senior living, inspired and empowered by our unique mission: to honor, to value, to invest. Our passionate commitment to serving seniors has proudly earned us a reputation for satisfaction that is second to none. Happiness is an Important Component to Maintaining Physical Health

December 09, 2024 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Happiness not only makes us feel good but may also be good for us. Research shows happiness is an important component to maintaining physical health, and is linked to lowering the risk of stroke, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. Along with better health, people, who report they are happy, tend to live longer.

Being happy can help us eat better, maintain a normal body weight and allow us to get a better night’s sleep. It can encourage people to be more active and reduce stress.  In fact, there is an understanding that the mind-body connection is stronger than we thought and unmanaged stress can lead to or exacerbate many health conditions.

Don’t feel like you are all that happy? No problem. Experts say there are things we can do to cultivate happiness, and improve our outlook on life as well as our physical health. Some of these things include forming and maintaining uplifting connections, practicing gratitude and mindfulness, and taking the time to appreciate the beautiful moments of life.

Expressing gratitude has been shown to be an excellent deterrent to depression and anxiety. Dr. Robert Emmons, a renowned researcher in the science of gratitude, says, “Gratitude is literally one of the few things that can measurably change people’s lives.” He adds it encourages feelings of joy, love and optimism and reduces feelings of envy and resentment. One way to cultivate gratitude is to daily journal at least one thing you are grateful for as writing it down appears to reinforce your feelings.

The practice of mindfulness is another way to bring more happiness into our life. It helps cultivate a deeper connection with our inner self, and improves mental health by reducing stress and anxiety. The National Institute of Health explains practicing mindfulness is as easy as breathing through your nose to a count of 4, holding for 1 second and then exhaling through the mouth to a count of 5. Repeat often. The Internet has other techniques for mindfulness practices.

MorningStar at Mountain Shadows is a welcoming place with the promise of new friendships as well as the leisure to pursue new interests or rekindle old ones. Residents enjoy all-day, restaurant-style dining; luxury amenities, and wellness programs and activities designed to engage seniors mentally, physically, socially and spiritually. For seniors with Alzheimer’s and other memory impairments, our distinct Reflections Neighborhood provides compassionate, experienced memory care. Taking Care of Your Eyes

December 04, 2024 by Quinn A in senior living

Did you know it is estimated 895 million people worldwide will have some level of vision impairment by 2050. The Lancet reports it signals a 150 percent increase over the next 30 years and includes loss of vision from cataracts and glaucoma. Experts say while many vision problems can be treated, in some cases they can also be prevented by adopting simple, healthy habits.

If you have already gotten into the habit of wearing sunscreen and a sun-blocking hat when you are outdoors for any period, optometrists say you need to complete your protection by making sure to wear protective sunglasses. Exposure to UV increases our risk for cataracts and your sunglasses should have a label reading “100 percent protection from UV and UVB rays” or “100 percent protection against UV 400.”  If you are outside working for long hours, consider wrap-around style sunglasses, and if you are doing work such as trimming bushes or chopping wood, be sure to wear safety sunglasses.

As the risk for eye diseases increases as we age, the National Institute on Aging recommends having your eyes checked regularly by an ophthalmologist or optometrist. For those over age 50, you should get a dilated eye exam every year or as recommended by your eye care professional. Regardless of age, most people with diabetes or high blood pressure need to get a dilated exam at least once a year.

Other ways to protect your eyes as you age is to eat a balanced diet with lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. Additionally, stop smoking, maintain a healthy weight and stay physically active. If you do have high blood pressure or diabetes, you need to learn how to manage them and follow your doctor’s guidelines.

MorningStar at Mountain Shadows is a 55+ community designed from the ground up to meet the needs of residents with a range of luxury amenities, senior care, hospitality services, wellness programs, and activities. Some Lifestyle Habits Can Increase Your Risk of Developing Arthritis

December 02, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Many people assume arthritis comes with aging, but experts say while joint pain is common in older adults, arthritis is not a normal part of aging. The CDC explains arthritis is a group of more than 100 conditions causing inflammation and swelling in the joints or nearby tissues with symptoms such as pain and stiffness. Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis and mostly occurs in older adults (about 70% are 55 years and older). Other common types of arthritis are rheumatoid arthritis and gout.

While there is not a cure for arthritis, there are treatments, medications and therapies. In addition, studies find healthy lifestyle habits can help manage symptoms of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout as well as lessen your risk for even getting it. For example, the CDC reports 40% of people with arthritis can decrease pain and improve function by being physically active.

Osteoarthritis is the breakdown of the cartilage of the joints causing bones to rub against one another resulting in pain and difficulty moving the joint.  Experts say millions of cases could be prevented by avoiding excessive weight gain. Exercising regularly and doing resistance training is another way to avoid injury to the joints.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic condition causing inflammation and swelling in joints. It can misshape, misalign and damage joints; and if it is in one knee or hand, it is typically on the other hand or knee. Recommendations to reduce your risk for RA include avoiding tobacco. Gingivitis, or gum inflammation, is linked to several health conditions including RA; and prevention includes improving oral health with good hygiene and dental visits.

Gout is another common form of arthritis and occurs when crystals of uric acid are deposited in one or more joints. People with gout experience pain, swelling and redness in the affected joints. Experts say eating a healthy diet, limiting alcohol, and staying well hydrated are good steps to reduce your risk. If you are overweight, lose weight and if possible avoid diuretics (discuss all medication changes with your doctor). Studies show regardless of what type of arthritis you have, early diagnosis and treatment can make a big difference in your future joint health.

Declutter Responsibly

November 29, 2024 by Quinn A in senior living

If we have lived in a house or apartment for a while, clutter can start to build and feel overwhelming. When the task seems too big, you may be unsure on how to begin decluttering. This can be a good time to turn to the experts.

The first tip is to narrow down an area to start in. Have garbage bags ready for things to throw away, donate or give to someone you know. Now focus on items you have more of than you need. For example a kitchen can feel really cluttered  and disorganized if you have drawers and cupboards filled with way too many spatulas, baking tins, mixing bowls or mugs. Chipped, cracked or worn out items should be thrown out. With duplicate items, save the best, give away or throw out the worst.

If something is broken and not worth getting fixed, throw it away or see if it can be recycled. The same goes for items you never use including gifts. If something is in good shape, pass it along to local thrift stores or charities where it will have a chance to find a new home and help a good cause.

To reduce clutter in landfills, check the internet to find places that accept various household items. Old linens and blankets are generally welcomed at animal shelters. Home for Habitat locations will usually accept working appliances, usable furniture and construction materials. Your old phone can be put into the hands of someone that will use it or safely recycle by various organizations.

Thought your old iPod was useless? There are organizations that give working iPods to lift the spirits of people with Alzheimer’s and other illnesses with the gift of music. Things from old yoga mats to sports equipment can be recycled or given a new home. Some charities specialize in using donated business clothing to give a boost to people starting their careers. Coats and jackets in good condition are sent here and around the world to people in need. Check on the internet to find places for other things you no longer need.

At MorningStar of Littleton, our senior living community offers 65 spacious assisted living suites over three-stories in studio and one-and-two-bedroom floorplans. Our distinct Reflections Neighborhood has 20 memory care suites for seniors with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. We are located minutes from the vibrant downtown area and close to health facilities such as St. Anthony Hospital & Swedish Medical Center. Contact us to set up an in-person tour.

Safety Tips for Using a Walker

November 27, 2024 by Quinn A in senior living

If you are at the point in life where you are not as stable as you used to be, have balance problems, arthritis or leg weakness; a mobility aid such as a walker could help keep you moving and lessen your chance of a fall. The first thing to do is work with a physical therapist or your healthcare provider to discuss the best type of walker for your personal needs and comfort. There are several fit points to consider as well as styles.

One common choice is a standard walker with four rubber-tipped legs and no wheels. Experts say it provides the most stability but has the drawback of having to pick it up to move. Other choices include walkers with wheels. A two-wheel walker has the wheels on the front two legs and can be helpful for those who have trouble picking up a standard walker. Four–wheel walkers may help those very unsteady on their feet but at the same time, can be a bit less stable. It may be safer to try using a four-wheeler with a seat.

Another important step in getting the proper walker is the height of the arms. The Mayo Clinic suggests stepping into the walker with your shoulders relaxed and upright. Elbows should be able to comfortably bend at 15 degrees. Other tips include remembering to stand upright when using as it is easier on your back, and to move one step at a time. Step into the walker with each step rather than walking behind it.

Use caution when using a walker on a slippery or wet surface, and even carpet requires extra care. Just as you do when you walk on your own, be sure to wear sensible low-heeled shoes that fit well. Experts say laces help customize the shoe to the foot.

Add-ons and various options make walkers more convenient. Fold-up models allow them to be easily transported. Attachable bags and baskets ensure you can carry items you need while keeping hands-free to concentrate on safely moving the walker. Other options include trays for drinks or meals and seats.

At the MorningStar of Littleton senior living community, we provide the area’s finest assisted living and memory care. Our assisted living suites are available in a smart selection of floorplans and configurations and designed with handicap-accessible bathrooms and 24/7 emergency call systems. Hallways and doorways safely accommodate the needs of residents. Breaking the Stigma Around Assisted Living

November 27, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Sadly, there is often a stigma attached to needing help. This is especially true for seniors. As we age, everyday tasks can become more challenging, which can often make seniors feel frustrated and overwhelmed. Due to the stigma surrounding assisted living senior communities, elders may resist transitioning to a home that can provide them with more care and help. MorningStar at Jordan Creek in Des Moines redefines what assisted living means for many seniors and their families. Keep reading to see how you can help break the stigma around assisted living.

Recognize the Signs for Help

Certain daily tasks can become overwhelming as we age. Changes in memory, mobility, or health can make completing errands and tasks difficult. However, it is important to notice the signs that a loved one may require more assistance than they’re letting on:

  • Spoiled food in the fridge

  • Piles of trash around the house

  • Unpaid bills

  • Missed doctor’s visits

If you notice these signs, it may be time or an honest conversation about exploring assisted living options.

Encourage Independence

Needing help doesn’t mean losing independence—it simply means adapting to life’s changes. At MorningStar Senior Living in Des Moines, seniors can maintain their dignity while receiving the support they need through:

  • Around-the-clock Care Managers on site

  • Various levels of assistance for daily living activities

  • A holistic and contemporary environment that promotes safety and comfort

MorningStar redefines senior living by offering care that enhances a senior’s independence rather than diminishes it.

Have Open Conversations

For seniors who may still feel anxious about needing help, approaching the topic of assisted living can be challenging. Remember to remain calm and empathetic. Encouragement and honesty go a long way in breaking the stigma around aging. When discussing senior living options, be respectful and transparent about their safety and well-being. Reassure them that needing help is a normal part of aging and that you will be there with them every step of the way.

Finding Budget-Friendly Assisted Living Options

November 25, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Affordability is one of the main concerns when it comes time to transition a loved one or parent into assisted living. These facilities have become much more common. This means there are more affordable options that still offer quality care.

Choosing the Right Path

All-inclusive senior living is one of the best financial choices for families looking for assisted living in Des Moines. When it comes to paying for assisted living care, there are multiple financial resources available to find the best senior living community for your parent or loved one. Communities like MorningStar at Jordan Creek, are redefining assisted living by providing affordable all-inclusive care that balances cost with modern amenities. Keep reading to see what makes affordable at MorningStar.

All Inclusive-Senior Living Saves You Money

Living independently is difficult for seniors when they require assistance with daily living. When this realization happens, many families may begin looking for alternatives like hiring a full-time home nurse, looking into senior daycare options, or combining households. This can become rather costly, and often ineffective at supplying the right level of care for long periods.

Arguably the most affordable, all-inclusive assisted living is one of the most affordable options for senior living care. MorningStar Senior Living bundles essential services and amenities into a single monthly fee. All-inclusive senior living eliminates the need for you to pay for individual services all at one time. Meal preparation, 24-hour nurses, socialization activities, medication management, and life-enrichment programs are all included in one flat rate that is personalized to the individual living in the community.

Staying Socially Active is Good for Your health

November 25, 2024 by Quinn A in Senior Living

The National Institute on Aging explains that while eating healthily and exercising is important for seniors, socializing and participating in activities you enjoy can be just as beneficial. Being lonely or feeling isolated is not good for our health and well-being; and can lead to depression or anxiety, neither of which is good for our health.

Taking part in social activities can increase a person’s sense of purpose and give more meaning to their life. Whether it is starting a new hobby, renewing an old interest, or making the effort to spend more time with family or friends, being social and having an active lifestyle can benefit the mind, body and spirit.

The NIA reports on various studies that find seniors who participate in hobbies and other social activities may lower their risk for developing some health problems “including dementia, heart disease, stroke, and some types of cancer.” A longer lifespan is linked to those who say they are satisfied with life; and other studies show staying physically active and having purpose appears to keep seniors happier and less depressed.

Experts say when seniors are happier; they are more resilient and better able to cope with life’s various challenges. More research suggests seniors who routinely participate in physical or mental activities may have fewer memory problems; while other data finds creative activities such as dancing or listening to music may help with memory problems or dementia.

At MorningStar of Wheat Ridge, residents enjoy participating in our many activities and wellness programs. We have something for everyone and our calendar includes activities to mentally, physically, socially and spiritually stimulate and engage. We also encourage residents to tap into their unique talents and experiences to lead special interest clubs themselves.

Located in a northern suburb of Metro Denver, we offer 45 private assisted living suites in a variety of floor plans and configurations. For those suffering from Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, we provide compassionate, all-inclusive services. Is Cognitive Decline an Inevitable Part of Aging?

December 05, 2024 by Quinn A in Memory care

The recent World Alzheimer Report 2024 published by Alzheimer’s Disease International states eighty percent of the general public think dementia is a normal part of aging. More troubling is that 65 percent of health care professionals believe the same. While the Alzheimer’s Association estimates 1 out of 9 Americans age 65 and older suffer from Alzheimer’s, remember that leaves a greater number of us not getting the disease.

Howard Fillit, M.D., clinical professor of geriatrics, medicine and neuroscience at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, and chief science officer of the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation, explains, “Certain abilities —processing speed, for example — slow down [around] the age of 20 or so, when processing speed peaks; to age 70 or 80, when processing speed can be down as much as 50 to 70 percent.” On the flip side, seniors typically have superior vocabulary and decision-making skills.

The National Institutes of Health recently funded a study to discover if individuals close to someone with dementia looked at it differently. They concluded that “people with a family member with dementia were less likely to believe that dementia is preventable and less confident about the effectiveness of taking preventive actions.” These unfavorable perceptions discouraged them from engaging in healthy behaviors linked to a decrease in a person’s risk for Alzheimer’s. Prior studies also found family members of a person with dementia were more reluctant to get early screening, which is too bad as today’s treatments are best started in the early stages of the disease.

While it is true a direct relative of someone with Alzheimer’s is more likely to develop the disease than those without a first-degree relative, it is not a given. Family genetics are not the only cause of Alzheimer’s. Known risk factors for dementia include obesity, chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and hypertension, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption. A report from the Lancet Commission estimated that up to 40% of dementia cases could be prevented by addressing such risk factors. The Alzheimer’s Association cautions any person considering genetic testing should receive genetic counseling before a test is ordered and once results are obtained. Discuss with your healthcare provider about what is right for you.

At the senior living community of MorningStar of Littleton, we provide an environment designed to enhance quality of life for seniors. This includes a healthy and tasty dining service, a full complement of wellness programs and activities, and an array of resort-style amenities. Our assisted living suites are available in studio and one- and two-bedroom configurations; and designed for your comfort and safety. For seniors with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, our distinct Reflections Neighborhood has 20 memory care suites.
