MorningStar at Mountain Shadows Offers Holistic Memory Care

March 27, 2024 by Quinn A in Memory care

MorningStar at Mountain Shadows offers unsurpassed senior living in Colorado Springs.  Along with 45 private assisted living suites, our Reflections Neighborhood has 19 suites devoted to caring for seniors with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.   MorningStar’s memory care revolves around comforting and caring for our most tender residents from the onset of the disease to the most advanced stages.

As dementia care specialists, we understand how devastating it is when a loved one receives a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or another memory loss disease, and we want you to know we are here to help.  Our memory care is in a separate area specifically designed to allow residents the freedom to explore their expansive surroundings safely and easily.  Within the safe haven of our Reflections Neighborhood, we have created an environment that encourages and supports residents’ independence whenever possible.

Our holistic approach to memory care is designed to affirm the value of the person and to find ways to celebrate the smallest successes.  MorningStar leverages the power of dance, music, art, exercise, animals and aromatherapy to heal and comfort, and provides meaningful wellness programs and activities that engage our residents.  Also, as many adverse behaviors are often side effects from antipsychotic drugs, our goal is to have as few as possible of our residents on such drugs.

We recognize that the essence of the individual remains despite the extent of memory loss, and that our job is to find ways to connect with and nurture it.  MorningStar’s philosophy and approach to this kind of supported living is encompassed under the breadth of possibilities we call “Lavender Sky.”  Thus, each day we strive to thoughtfully “enter, embrace and explore” the world of dementia.  Please visit our website for more information about compassionate, loving memory care in Colorado Springs.

MorningStar is guided by a culture rooted in our mission of honoring God, valuing seniors, and investing in our team, which allows us to deliver services with warmth, sincerity and depth of purpose. We have built a reputation for creating homes filled with an atmosphere of love and community. Please contact us to learn more about the finest assisted living and memory care in Colorado Springs.

Finding a Gift for a Parent or Grandparent in an Assisted Living Community

March 25, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

It can be difficult to find the right gift for a parent or grandparent living in an assisted living community.  We recognize that they have had a lifetime of gifts, and as they are no longer running their own household, they not only do not need as much but have a limited amount of space.

One suggestion is to give them a blanket or throw as seniors often suffer from the cold.  However, if you want to personalize your gift, there are several companies that will create a cozy throw using one of your family photos.  A talking photo album also lets you create memories through family pictures and when it has recorded voices of the grandkids, it is really special.

Another idea is to give them a lap desk that allows them to easily read a book or to write a letter from the comfort of their chair.  You could add a couple of adult coloring books illustrated with things they enjoy or places they have been along with some colored pencils and markers to complete your gift.

A personalized gift basket can be filled with all kinds of things such as their favorite soaps, lotions and perfumes or colognes.  You can also fill a basket with special treats including chocolates, cookies and a small plug-in teapot and tea bags, or do one up with slippers, grippy socks, and a couple of pairs of fashionable compression socks.

Furthermore, tablets and iPads make good gifts as their touch-screen technology and large print options make them easy for seniors to use.  If your parents are not tech savvy, set up the tablet before you give it to them with their email address, facebook page and other personal items.  It may be fun to pre-load a few games that you think they would enjoy and add some photos of the family.  Add to the gift the offer to be their “tech support” if they have any problems.

MorningStar at Mountain Shadows is proud to offer exceptional senior living in Colorado Springs with our distinct mission statement “to honor, to value, to invest.”  Our community offers 45 private assisted living suites and 19 suites in our Reflections Neighborhood devoted to caring for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. Contact us for more information about our beautiful community and to set up a tour.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. The Differences Between Alzheimer’s, Senility and Dementia

March 22, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

While most of us have heard of Alzheimer’s, senility and dementia, we may still be confused wondering if they are all the same thing or different diseases. Doctors explain the terms are often used interchangeably but do have different meanings. Dementia describes a syndrome with a wide range of symptoms that impact a person’s ability to perform everyday activities independently. While not an actual disease, the symptoms include memory loss, and difficulty with thinking clearly, making decisions and in some cases, controlling emotions. Dementia can be caused by a variety of diseases or conditions.

Alzheimer’s is a neurodegenerative disease and one form of dementia accounting for 60 to 80 percent of cases. The disease was formally recognized in 1906 and named after the German physician, Aloïs Alzheimer, who first described it. Advances in medicine have found the brain can show signs of the disease years before the person experiences any symptoms.

Dementia is typically irreversible but there are some conditions that can cause symptoms of the disease. These include vitamin deficiency, underactive thyroid gland, depression or stress; and when treated, can reverse the condition. Lewy Body Dementia and Parkinson’s disease, a neurodegenerative disease, may also cause symptoms of dementia as can AIDS, Lyme disease and stroke.

Senility is another term used to describe the type of memory deterioration associated with the elderly. Experts explain there are two major types of senile dementia: “those due to generalized “atrophy” (Alzheimer’s-type dementia) and those due to vascular problems (mainly, strokes).” Symptoms of senility include a decline in cognitive abilities such as problems recalling information and thinking clearly; and Alzheimer’s is the most common form.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, we offer experienced, compassionate care for those in the early onset of Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases right through to the most advanced stages.  The Reflections Neighborhood at MorningStar is unique from many other assisted living communities as it is specifically designed to cater to the specialized needs of those suffering from memory impairment. We provide our tender residents a safe, comforting physical environment, trained caregivers, daily health monitoring, meaningful activities, wellness programs, community meals and more. Please contact us for more information about our specialized memory care in Colorado Springs.

MorningStar has considered it a privilege and responsibility to “cast a new light” on senior living, inspired and empowered by our unique mission: to honor, to value, to invest. Our passionate commitment to serving seniors has proudly earned us a reputation for satisfaction that is second to none. Seniors are Often Healthier and Happier in an Assisted Living Community

March 20, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Many seniors are pleasantly surprised to discover that moving to an assisted living community is not the worst thing to happen to them.  In fact, statistics show that for many seniors it is a healthier, more agreeable alternative to living alone.  The reason some seniors are initially reluctant to make the move is that they are unaware of the significant changes that have occurred in senior living over the years especially in terms of care options and amenities.

Today’s communities like MorningStar at Mountain Shadows in Colorado Springs offer assisted living that is geared toward meeting aging adult’s physical, emotional, spiritual and wellness needs.  Also, for many seniors, assisted living offers a better choice for those who require help in their daily lives than receiving in-home care services.  This is because assisted living communities offer 24/7 care and provide the security of knowing help is not far away in the event of an emergency.

For seniors living alone, assisted living provides the opportunity for socializing whether it is with planned activities or in common areas designed to encourage relaxed interactions.  Even if you are someone who values your privacy, community living offers the benefit of private suites with the comfort of having others around.

Another reason you may want to consider assisted living is that communities such as MorningStar are designed for the mobility and safety of seniors who may not be as sturdy on their feet as they once were.   To modify your own home to accommodate physical limitations can be quite expensive.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, we also provide scheduled transportation and planned outings to a variety of places such as shopping, parks or cultural events.  Furthermore, for many seniors cooking and preparing meals is difficult and we solve that problem by providing tasty, nutritional daily meals.  Please contact us to set up a tour to determine if assisted living may be the right decision for you or your loved one.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. Alzheimer’s Disease Affects a Person’s Physical Abilities

March 18, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Along with changes in the person’s memory and cognitive abilities, Alzheimer’s disease affects a person’s physical abilities. Experts explain dementia symptoms can change everything from the way a person walks, talks, and how their body works. Normal body functions such as going to the bathroom, carrying on a conversation and maintaining balance become more and more difficult.

While unfortunately we do not yet know the cause of Alzheimer’s disease, doctors suspect the symptoms are caused by a buildup of harmful proteins in the brain called amyloid and tau, which create clumps called tangles and plaque. These clumps get in the way of normal brain functions and kill healthy cells.

Changes caused by Alzheimer’s disease include loss of balance and coordination, which puts a person at a higher risk of a fall. A person’s feet may shuffle or drag along as they walk. Another symptom includes weakened muscles and fatigue that makes it difficult to stand or sit upright in a chair. Trouble controlling the bladder and bowels as well as seizures and twitches are other common symptoms.

While some people experience a slower pace of the disease and live up to 20 years after a diagnosis, the average life expectancy is 4 to 8 years. The most common cause of death in a person with Alzheimer’s is pneumonia, another infection, or a heart attack.

In addition to assisted living, Colorado Springs’ MorningStar at Mountain Shadows offers compassionate, loving care to those with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Our unique approach to memory care is all-encompassing and provides an environment in which your loved one is given the support they need to make the most of each day. Every aspect of our Reflections Neighborhood is designed to make residents feel comforted, safe and secure. Please contact us for more information.

Find Companion Living Senior Living Communities in Glendale

February 23, 2024 by Quinn A in senior living

Seniors need to have emotional support when transitioning to assisted living communities. While some enjoy the change, it can be overwhelming for others. Having a companion like a spouse or best friend nearby provides numerous benefits to seniors in assisted living care. For senior living communities that offer companion living, couples can navigate the changes and milestones of aging together in a safe and exciting environment.

What is Companion Living?

Companion living is for senior couples or close friends who want to continue living together in assisted living. Couples can live together in their own suite, surrounded by their treasured possessions and memories. Alternatively, suites can be shared by close friends who simply enjoy one another’s company. Companion living for seniors in assisted living is a great option for those who need a little extra care and attention from those they trust.

Companion living in assisted living is a great option for those who are most comfortable living with someone they know and trust. Living with a trustworthy companion helps to keep an eye on one another. These individuals are already used to their loved ones’ needs and habits, which can help the other one to acclimate easier and begin to make their senior living facility their home.

A companion can also update care managers and nurses within their senior living facility if routines or completion with activities begin to change. Those closest to us can pick up on things quicker than others sometimes and can notify caregivers when necessary.

Within its communities, MorningStar Senior Living Des Moines offers Assisted Living with support at various levels and Around-the-clock Care Managers who are on-site and at the ready to ensure your comfort and safety as you make MorningStar your home.

The Benefits of Personalized Care for Seniors with Alzheimer’s Disease

February 23, 2024 by Quinn A in Memory care

There is still no cure for Alzheimer’s or dementia. This means a memory loss diagnosis can only be treated for the length of the individual’s life. Finding proper memory care takes dedicated time and research to find the community that is right for you and your loved one. The best memory care communities understand that senior care should be tailored to each individual, prioritizing their set of unique challenges, health concerns, and personality.

What is Personalized Memory Care?

Proper Alzheimer’s care should not be “one-size-fits-all.” Seniors with a memory loss diagnosis should receive the proper amount and type of care they require to support their physical, emotional and social needs. Personalized memory care is designed to meet the seniors where they are at. Specialized memory care plans are designed with help from family, health care providers and personalized care managers at MorningStar Senior Living Littleton Co.

Memory Care at MorningStar Encourages Independence

It’s difficult for seniors with Alzheimer’s or dementia to experience autonomy and independence in the same way they once did. Many lose mobility, motor function, and experience changes in their communication style. Personalized care plans support a senior’s independence, regardless of their level. While memory care communities still provide ample medication management and help with daily activities, our senior living community works with a memory loss diagnosis to develop activities and routines that promote independence and autonomy.

Regular assessments and family meetings allow the memory care team members at MorningStar to update your loved one’s personalized care plan whenever necessary, giving you and your loved one a flexible memory care experience that works.

MorningStar's Commitment to Senior Safety: A Haven for Assisted Living Residents in Des Moines

February 21, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Falls are a serious concern for families of a senior parent or loved one. Nearly three million elders go to the hospital each year because of fall injuries. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), falls may lead to serious head or hip injuries. Almost all hip fractures are due to fall accidents. When it comes to assisted living, senior living communities must reduce potential fall risks within their buildings while still encouraging an active community and independence.

While every senior living community is different, MorningStar Assisted Living Des Moines offers senior-approved services and amenities that focus on important aspects of safety and wellness. Foundational pillars such as physical health, mental stimulation, and a happy community are all held to high importance within our assisted living facilities which are supported by our dedication to safety and security in the following ways:

Assessing Potential Fall Risks

MorningStar at Jordan Creek assesses possible fall risks in elders who consider assisted living before they move in. By continuing to evaluate residents periodically throughout their stay as their health conditions and necessities may change, we can better prepare for possible risks or accidents. Once our staff understands a resident’s health and safety risk, we take steps to help keep our seniors safe in our assisted living care by implementing changes in their rooms, listening to healthcare providers and providing more support throughout the day.

Accessible Senior Living Communities

MorningStar Assisted Living Communities Des Moines are designed with accessibility in mind for all residents. In our communities, it’s easy to get to and from your amenities and activities with access to ramps, elevators, and handrails. Mobility support is essential for seniors to feel independent, regardless of their physical limitations.

Tips for Your Next Doctor’s Visit

February 21, 2024 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Have you had the experience of walking to your car after a doctor’s visit and a question pops into your mind you wished you had asked the doctor? You are not alone. In fact, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), a division of the U.S. Dept. of Human Health & Services, reminds all of us about the benefit of preparing questions and accurate information ahead of time to provide to your physician. They say it not only improves your care, but builds trust between you and your healthcare provider, which can lead to better results.

For help on questions to ask to facilitate a more fruitful visit to your doctor and efficiently use your precious time (studies show doctors spend between 13 to 24 minutes with each patient), the AHRQ offers a series of questionnaires related to your visit. Remember typically you have a reason for the visit such as: a well visit, looking for answers for a specific medical problem, returning to discuss treatment, or getting test results. Prepare for your appointment by bringing your prescription medications as well as over-the-counter drugs you use including vitamins and dietary or herbal supplements.

When discussing a possible medical procedure, AHRQ says questions should include: why do I need this procedure; how do I prepare; when will I get the results; and how will I feel afterward? If surgery is recommended, ask if there are alternative treatments available that are just as effective; possible complications; and recovery period. AHRQ says if you are given a new medication, ask how the new drug will interact with other drugs you are taking, how long you will be on it, and common side effects. Before you leave your appointment, make sure you understand your instructions.

At MorningStar of Wheat Ridge, our beautiful home is designed from the ground up to serve our residents’ every need. Our community offers stylish assisted living suites in a variety of floorplans. In addition, our Reflections Neighborhood has suites devoted to the specialized care of those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Please contact us or visit our website for more information about exceptional senior living at MorningStar.

Better Food Choices for Seniors with Alzheimer’s or Dementia

February 21, 2024 by Quinn A in Senior Living

We all know that making healthy food options benefits our bodies, but did you know our food choices impact our brain health, too? Making informed choices about what foods are beneficial for seniors with Alzheimer’s or dementia can greatly improve their health and happiness.

There is currently no evidence to suggest that certain foods can prevent Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. However, there are still healthy food choices and eating habits you can make to improve symptoms of Alzheimer’s. Senior living communities that specialize in Alzheimer’s care encourage these food choices for seniors:

Nutrient-Rich Foods:

MorningStar Senior Living Littleton Co offers Alzheimer’s care options that encourage healthy eating through their  “BrainWise” program. “BrainWise” is a lifestyle at MorningStar where we prioritize using ingredients known to support brain health. Superfoods, like acai berries, Omega 3 fats, dark chocolate, and dark greens, supply your brain with vitamin K, anti-inflammatory properties, and antioxidants. Natural fats found in SuperFoods are proven to nourish, protect, and enhance the performance of our brain cells.

Foods with Cognitive Benefits:

Next time you’re dining with your family member at MorningStar, ask our executive chefs for meals with turmeric, broccoli, or pumpkin seeds. These foods are rich in magnesium, iron, zinc, and copper and are known to support cognitive health. Are chefs design seasonal menus that feature the freshest ingredients from high-quality producers, locally sourced when possible, to support the health and wellness of our residents in memory care.

Explore This Easily Accessible Community for Seniors in Iowa

February 19, 2024 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Once a senior retires, they may begin to feel removed and distant from their community, friends and family. This may be because they are no longer participating in a routine of getting ready for work, commuting, and planning out the rest of their evening. They are no longer socializing as much as they once were, and with time, friends and family may move away or experience the life changes that keep them from communicating or visiting as much as they once did.

Not only this, but changes in eyesight, mobility, and coordination may make it more difficult for seniors to drive to and from locations and activities. This can be greatly discouraging for seniors who rely on transporting themselves to places outside of the home, not to mention dangerous. All-inclusive senior living communities like MorningStar prioritize easily accessible amenities and activities for seniors aged 55 and up. Amenities ranging from a staffed salon to gyms and theatre rooms are all within walking distance from senior living apartments. Easily accessible assisted living communities benefit seniors in the following ways:

Independence and Autonomy

Seniors want to complete tasks on their own. With minimal supervision, seniors in assisted living at MorningStar can safely get to and from their errands. Whether it is to the dining hall or the secluded courtyard, seniors are encouraged to explore their community and complete tasks throughout their senior living neighborhood.

Convenient Access to Services and Amenities

As mentioned, seniors can complete their day-to-day maintenance at MorningStar Senior Living Des Moines. For those who struggle to drive themselves to complete tasks, on-site salons, bistros, workout rooms, and libraries make it easy for seniors to build a routine similar to how they would care for themselves previously.

Community Inclusion

A close-knit senior living community like MorningStar offers seniors more chances to be social and experience comradare with their neighbors. Being part of an active and social assisted living community helps seniors feel connected to the place they live and can make amenities and activities much more exciting.

Embrace Alzheimer’s Care with this Holistic Memory Care Program

February 19, 2024 by Quinn A in Alzheimer’s care

There is a negative perception associated with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. While a memory loss diagnosis certainly can be scary and unfamiliar, embracing the disease may be a more successful tactic to provide support for seniors with Alzheimer’s.

As a facility dealing in the service of memory loss, MorningStar understands the difficulties attached to the symptoms of Alzheimer’s and other memory loss diseases. Known for being a leading senior living community in Alzheimer’s care, we hope to combat these worries through a compassionate and holistic memory care approach called “Lavender Sky.”

What is “Lavender Sky”?

Lavender Sky is a memory care approach that gears towards specialized Alzheimer’s training that prepares staff and caretakers to “thoughtfully enter, embrace, and explore” the realm of dementia.

In embracing memory loss and Alzheimer’s, we then can begin to explore possible new avenues for care and understanding of memory loss diseases and their difficulties. Embracing memory loss, as confusing as that may sound, is one step towards better understanding memory loss and the individual situations our residents may be dealing with regarding their diagnosis.

The Art of Embracing an Alzheimer’s Diagnosis

Unlike traditional memory care approaches that tend to focus on the individual’s weaknesses and limitations, holistic memory care offered at MorningStar emphasizes a senior’s strengths and abilities. Specialized care plans are tailored to the individual’s unique needs, interests, and abilities, allowing them to maintain their sense of identity and independence for as long as possible. Lavender Sky prioritizes giving each senior the appropriate level of care needed, whether it is at the onset of the disease or more advanced stages of Alzheimer’s.

Are You Considering a Memory Care Community for a Loved One?

February 16, 2024 by Quinn A in Memory care

Are you considering a community setting for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia?  Experts say the first and most important thing to learn about senior living communities offering memory care is whether they are up to the task of caring for your loved one.  Do services align with their needs and is the home capable of advanced care down the road?  A Place for Mom’s website says by asking the following questions, you should get the answers you need.

Before you begin your search, they suggest taking a few minutes to think about the needs of your loved one.  Do they have a tendency to wander or exhibit aggressive behaviors?  Do they require help with eating and drinking?  Are they mobile or use a wheelchair or walker?  Other information to relay is if they need help toileting, require 24/7 supervision, or care for medical conditions such as diabetes.

Once you establish that a memory care community is equipped to care for your loved one, now ask questions including how experienced is the staff; and do they have any special training.  If so, is it on-going?  Will your loved one have an individualized care plan?  Also, what is the staff-ratio during the day and at night?

Inquire about safety protocols starting with secured doors, courtyards, and grounds as well as an emergency call system.  Are hallways color-coded making it easier for residents to navigate about more independently?   Is there a nurse on duty, and how extensive are medical services?   Also, ask about the type of memory care activities and treatments available.  After you have learned what you can, experts say the final decision will most likely come down to your peace of mind.

MorningStar of Wheat Ridge’s goal is to provide the highest quality senior living, which includes compassionate memory care for those in the early onset of dementia through to the most advanced stages.  Our holistic approach to care is designed to affirm the value of the person and to find ways to celebrate the smallest successes.  Beginning with dedicated caregivers to activities, programs and meals tailored to our residents’ special needs, we bring a deep understanding of the disease to our care.  Please contact us for more information about our Reflections Neighborhood and the philosophy that guides our care.

Arthritis Facts and Myths

February 16, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

In an article in Medical News Today experts discuss some of the common myths and facts regarding arthritis, a condition that causes pain and inflammation in joints. Osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are the two main types of arthritis, and a national survey found nearly half of adults 65 years and older have been diagnosed with arthritis. OA, the most common form and leading cause of disability in older adults, is the result of cartilage between the bones in a joint wearing down.

Many people believe arthritis is only a disease of the elderly but RA, while not as common as OA, typically starts in individuals as young as 20 to 40 years old. People also mistakenly think if a joint hurts, it must be arthritis. Doctors say there are several reasons a person may experience pain in and around joints including old injuries, bursitis, and tendinitis.

Another myth is you shouldn’t exercise if you have arthritis; however, studies show exercise can actually help with range of motion and strength in the joint (consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new exercise or activity). The American College of Rheumatology says, “Exercise and arthritis can and should coexist. People with arthritis who exercise regularly have less pain, more energy, improved sleep, and better day-to-day function.”

Then there is the debate on whether heat is better than ice for sore joints. The Guy’s and St Thomas’s National Health Service (NHS) Foundation Trust in the UK, explains, “Used in the right way, heat can help reduce pain and stiffness in joints and muscles. Cold application can help reduce joint inflammation and swelling.” Moreover, experts say believing arthritis is unpreventable is only partially true as there are things people can do to mitigate risk or slow down the progression such as maintaining a healthy body weight.

Pets Offer Seniors Loyal Companionship and Unconditional Love

February 14, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Over the last decade, there have been many studies done regarding the various benefits of pets for seniors including providing loyal companionship and unconditional love. They can help keep a senior active as even if you don’t want to go for a walk, you know your dog needs one. In fact, studies show seniors with dogs are more physically active than other older adults without pets. Another thing about taking a dog out for a walk is it is a great way to meet new friends.

However, before you rush out to get a dog or cat, veterinarians caution seniors (and their well-intentioned family members), to remember some animals are better suited to the energy level and temperament of older adults. They recommend several breeds of dogs that have a good disposition and are easy to care for. One breed making the list is the French bulldog as they are known as reliable companions and good walking partners. Poodles and Schipperkes are both loyal and intelligent and easy to care for. Veterinarians say a Maltese has a reputation for being an attentive dog to its owner. For a more active senior, a Pembroke Welsh Corgi makes a loving partner.

Experts say there are some breeds of cats that typically make better companions for seniors. The Birman cat is one. It is moderately active, affectionate, gentle, and a faithful companion known for its quiet air of dignity. Russian Blue cats also make the list as they are quiet, gentle, genteel cats and make very loyal companions. Persian cats are known as very affectionate. The Ragdoll cat is another good choice as it is known for its docile, placid temperament and affectionate nature.

MorningStar at Mountain Shadows Offers Comfort, Wellness, and Community

February 12, 2024 by Quinn A in Senior Living

If you still think assisted living is an “old person’s home,” you could not be more mistaken. Today’s senior living communities are a far cry from old-fashioned facilities like nursing homes, and offer a vibrant lifestyle of comfort, wellness, and community. As a resident, you have opportunities to grow, learn and contribute.

Skilled nursing facilities (SNF) had their beginnings decades ago as “nursing homes,” and in a time when there were few other options for senior care. Today SNF typically focuses on short-term rehab including helping patients discharged from the hospital after surgery or illness. SNF staff include RNs and CNAs, and specialize in serving residents in fragile and declining health.

Assisted living is designed to assist residents with the activities of daily living (ADLs) such as toileting, dressing, and bathing. However, assisted living communities like MorningStar at Mountain Shadows provide much more than just physical care.  Along with a wealth of amenities, activities and services, it is designed to feel like a real home.  MorningStar’s services help families by providing transportation to doctor appointments and other errands as well as onsite supportive services from third-party providers including physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy.  Residents have the opportunity for plenty of socializing and are encouraged to participate in a range of activities and wellness programs.

MorningStar’s services also include providing housekeeping to ensure residents’ homes are tidy and clean.  By taking care of meals, we help residents get the daily nutrition they need.  Moreover, meals are served restaurant-style in our beautiful dining room as we believe breaking bread together provides far more than physical nutrients but bonds us as family and friends.  We also help with another common problem many seniors experience when living alone, which is forgetting to or improperly taking medications.  We solve this by offering medication management services.

Please contact us for more information about the finest senior living in Colorado Springs.  Our beautiful community has 45 stylish suites for assisted living and another 19 suites devoted to the individualized care of residents with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.

MorningStar at Mountain Shadows’ mission statement of “to honor, to value, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living communities. We have built a foundation on honoring God, valuing our seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, we provide outstanding assisted living and memory care in Colorado Springs.

Are You Taking a Medication Associated With an Increased Risk of a Fall?

February 09, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

The Center for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) reports millions of older adults fall each year—resulting in more than 36,000 deaths. Of those falls, 3 million seniors are treated in emergency departments for fall injuries; and one out of every five falls causes an injury, such as broken bones or a head injury. With these alarming statistics, experts say it is important for seniors to know their risk for a fall including whether they are taking medications associated with an increased risk.

The first step is to talk to your doctor to see if you are taking one of these medications, as medications are a common reason for falls. Furthermore, experts say adjusting or making a change in medication is the easiest thing to do to help prevent a fall. If it is determined you are taking a medication known to cause light-headedness, dizziness, sudden drop in blood pressure, or chronically low blood pressure or hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), you and your healthcare team can regularly re-evaluate your need and dosage.

Another way to mitigate your risk for a fall is to do exercises designed to improve leg strength and balance. In addition, be sure to get an annual eye exam and update your glasses as needed. Lastly check your home for trip hazards (keep clutter out of hallways and stairways) and install grab bars and better lighting where needed.

For exceptional assisted living, Colorado Springs seniors are encouraged to consider MorningStar at Mountain Shadows. At MorningStar we know your independence is important, and our goal is to help you maintain it as much as possible. As People Age, Depression Can Be Confused With Dementia

February 07, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Experts report that as people age, dementia and depression are both common conditions and may be confused with one another. Additionally, one may lead to the other as depression is linked to a higher risk for dementia, and dementia can cause depression.

The Harvard Medical School explains depression in the elderly can lead to a “phenomenon called pseudodementia—an apparent intellectual decline that stems from a lack of energy or effort.” They say individuals with this problem are often forgetful, move slowly, exhibit low motivation and signs of slowing mental prowess. If a loved one experiences these types of symptoms, their doctor may treat it with the same medications used to treat depression. As the person’s mood improves, they typically begin to function at their previous level.

Professionals share a few ways depression and dementia differ to help families and healthcare providers determine what is going on. One important difference is the time span of the decline.  A person with depression typically shows a faster decline in mental functioning than those suffering from Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related diseases. Also, Alzheimer’s disease causes confusion and disorientation as well as problems with short-term memory. Depression causes problems with concentration.

People suffering from depression do not have more than the usual difficulties with writing, speaking and motor skills, and are more aware of any memory problems they are experiencing. People suffering from Alzheimer’s disease seem indifferent to those types of changes. However, to determine the cause of the problem, it is important to make an appointment with the person’s healthcare provider.

If it does turn out to be Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia, MorningStar at Mountain Shadows is ready to help. Along with assisted living, our community provides compassionate, comprehensive care to those with memory impairment.  Residents receive 24-hour care, daily health monitoring, access to a full-time nurse, and participate in wellness programs and services tailored to their special needs.  For trusted senior living in Colorado Springs, please contact us to learn more.

Breaking Down the Cost of Assisted Living

February 05, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Experts advise families to do their homework before moving mom or dad into an assisted living community as the more you know about retirement communities, it helps avoid sticker shock as well as an unhappy parent. The recommendation is to tour at least two potential communities in order to make an informed comparison.

Prices for assisted living typically are determined by the amount of senior care services the person requires. Many offer a tiered system of care to allow residents to safely age in place as health conditions change so remember to ask about how often care plans are evaluated. Other reasons costs can vary include room type, i.e. selecting a smaller or larger floor plan; as well as suite location, a scenic view or balcony.

Be sure to ask what services and activities are included in the basic cost of the community. You will want to know about upfront deposits, community and move-in fees. Additionally, ask about the procedure for moving out and what type of notice you need to give.

Han Hwang, executive VP of partner sales and success for Caring.com, an online resource for those caring for aging parents, spouses and other loved ones, says “it’s really important to know exactly what you’re getting and to do an apples-to-apples comparison” when choosing an assisted living community. Often monthly costs include a fee for room and board along with the level of care, medication management and any other ancillary services. To help you stay within budget, Hwang says to anticipate services you may need over the next 12 to 24 months.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, our community is designed from the ground up to meet the needs of residents with a range of luxury amenities, senior care, hospitality services, wellness programs, and activities. Our beautiful home offers assisted living suites with a choice of spacious studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floorplans. In addition, our Reflections Neighborhood has suites devoted to those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.
