Sleep Apnea is a Serious Condition

November 22, 2023 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

The US News & World Report says approximately 1 in 3 adults are believed to have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). They explain the condition causes a person to momentarily stop breathing at intervals throughout the night and interrupting their sleep.

Pulmonologist and section head of sleep medicine at National Jewish Health in Denver, Dr. Sheila Tsai, explains, “A person’s airway either partially collapses or completely closes (obstructs) during sleep.” She says episodes can be frequent throughout the sleep cycle and cause drops in oxygenation. While the person may only awake briefly as they struggle to breathe, their sleep is fragmented and non-restorative as it infers with REM, the deep, restful stage of sleep.

Common causes of OSA are obesity and age, and The Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine estimates as many as 80 percent of people suffering from OSA are undiagnosed. The condition typically causes the person to snore loudly, interrupted with gasps, hesitations and snorts. They may wake up feeling unrefreshed and sleepy during the day, or complain of headaches. OSA can additionally cause other sleep disorders to become worse like restless-leg syndrome and sleep walking.

Doctors say OSA is a serious, but treatable condition and it is important to seek medical care. A sleep study or test done in a clinic setting or even at home is the best way to diagnose the condition. Untreated OSA can put a person at a higher risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and other problems.

Is Assisted Living the Right Choice?

November 20, 2023 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

For many seniors, there comes a time when they feel they are not living life on their own terms, and routine, day-to-day activities start becoming more difficult. To determine if assisted living is the right choice for a parent or another loved one, experts say you need to consider the amount of care they require daily. If it is more personal care than he/she can get (or afford) with in-home services or in an independent living community, yet they don’t need 24-hour medical care and supervision, assisted living is the ideal option.

People often confuse assisted living communities with nursing homes; however, they are not the same thing. Nursing homes provide around-the-clock skilled nursing care while assisted living provides help with the ADLs (activities of daily living) to enhance residents’ quality of life within a residential setting.

While some families may experience sticker shock when first learning the cost of assisted living, you need to consider everything it includes. For example, MorningStar at Mountain Shadows’ monthly fee includes property taxes, utilities, security system, and the cost of maintenance inside and out. Daily meals are included in the fee as is housekeeping, scheduled transportation and an array of activities, entertainment and outings.

At MorningStar, we like to think of assisted living as providing seniors “a little help from friends” to enable them to live life as independently as possible. Our community offers assisted living suites in a choice of studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floorplans. Onsite amenities include a salon, bistro, fitness room, theater, chapel, fireside patio and library. For seniors suffering from Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases, our Reflections Neighborhood is designed to meet the needs of our most tender residents.

Along with assisted living and memory care, MorningStar at Mountain Shadows also offers respite care (short recuperative stays) or trial stays (up to a full month) so you can see if we are a good fit. Please contact us or visit our website to learn what sets us apart from other senior living in Colorado Springs and why MorningStar is such a great place to call home.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003. When to See a Doctor About Memory Loss

November 17, 2023 by Quinn A in Memory care

Growing older can bring with it a variety of problems including worrying about your ability to remember things or the fact that it now takes you a lot longer to learn something new. While you may be concerned about forgetting where you put your glasses or the date of your next doctor visit, or even forgetting to pay an occasional bill, experts say most likely it is just normal aging.

So, what are the differences between normal forgetfulness and signs of a deeper problem? The National Institute on Aging (NIA) says it is about the degree of forgetfulness. While mild forgetfulness may be normal, memory loss that impacts your day-to-day life is a cause for concern and includes things like forgetting how to get home, or problems driving or using your phone.

The NIA says this is the time to have an honest discussion with your doctor as he/she can help determine whether it is normal aging or something else that is causing the problem. If indicated, they can do a series of cognitive and medical tests to narrow down the problem. It is important to remember not all memory loss is a sign of Alzheimer’s disease or another type of dementia but may be the result of a medication you are taking, depression, infection or a medical problem.

Doctors say it is important to get a diagnosis because if it is dementia there are medications and treatments that can help. A diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) means a person is considered to have more memory or other thinking problems than other people their age. If a person does have MCI, typically they can still care for themselves and do their normal activities. While it can be an early indicator of Alzheimer’s disease, the NIA says not everyone with MCI will develop Alzheimer’s disease.

Along with assisted living, Colorado Springs’ MorningStar at Mountain Shadows offers specialized care for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Every aspect of MorningStar’s care addresses the needs of our residents starting with the very design of our Reflections Neighborhood to a wide range of wellness programs, activities and healthy, delicious meals.  Please visit our website to learn more about our compassionate, loving memory care.  While you are there, use our Community Assistant (in the lower right corner) to inquire about pricing and set up a tour.

Grieving for a Loved One With Alzheimer’s Disease

November 15, 2023 by Quinn A in Senior Living

When a loved one is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, it is devastating news for all. Family members may quickly start experiencing feelings of grief as they recognize their life is about to be changed by the disease and are uneasy about what the future will hold. Most are left with questions about what to expect next.

As Alzheimer’s begins to take away the person we know and love, the Alzheimer’s Association explains that, “you'll mourn him or her and may experience the different phases of grieving: denial, anger, guilt, sadness and acceptance.” They remind us that feelings of grief do not come in a specific order but rather we go in and out of the various stages.

Feelings of denial include unrealistically hoping the person is not ill or expecting them to get better. Others try to convince themselves their loved one has not changed or try to normalize and make excuses for their behaviors. Anger may include being frustrated with the person or feeling abandoned. You may also experience feelings of resentment with the demands of caregiving and/or resent others who are not helping with care.

Guilt includes having unrealistic thoughts about what you should have done or feeling guilty if you do not visit every day. A spouse that is well and still able to enjoy life may feel guilty that their husband or wife is no longer able to do so. Others may have negative feelings such as wishing the person would die or go away.

The Alzheimer’s Association says you need to face both your positive as well as negative feelings. They also say to be prepared to go through feelings of loss more than once as the disease progresses. Remember your grief is a part of your journey, and if you need help, talk with someone about your feelings.

Along with assisted living, MorningStar at Mountain Shadows provides compassionate and loving care to those suffering from Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. Our memory care residents are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve and spend each day in an atmosphere that celebrates and elevates their lives. Taking Prescription Medications Safely

November 13, 2023 by Quinn A in Memory care

Every year seniors are hospitalized due to prescribed medications. Statistics show drug-related problems are common in older adults and include drug ineffectiveness, adverse drug effects, over-dosage, under-dosage, inappropriate treatment, inadequate monitoring, nonadherence, and drug interactions. It is important to remember even though medication is prescribed by your healthcare provider, problems can occur.

Experts say you must follow directions and take medications as prescribed including on time, in the right dosage, with or without food, and never grinding it into a powder (unless directed by the doctor). They recommend carrying an updated list of all medications and sharing it with your doctors. Additionally, be aware of common interactions between prescribed drugs and over-the-counter medications and alcoholic drinks.

Before your doctor prescribes a new medication, ask them why you are taking it, for how long and what are the potential side effects. It is important to know what to look for and to discuss the benefits versus any negative or dangerous consequences. You will want to know, for example, if a drug will make you drowsy so you know not to drive under its influence.

Another thing to safeguard your health is to review your medications with your doctor on a regular basis asking questions such as: do you still need to take it, is the dosage correct, and is there a non-drug alternative? Despite your faith in your medical team, it is not a bad idea to check your medications against the American Geriatric Society’s “2023 American Geriatrics Society Beers Criteria for Potentially Inappropriate Medication Use in Older Adults.” The online site lists medications that may be inappropriate or dangerous for seniors.

MorningStar at Mountain Shadows’ assisted living and memory care community enables residents to live life as independently as possible. From healthy daily meals to wellness programs and activities, we have a whole range of services and resort-style amenities to ensure residents’ comfort and wellbeing. Do You Need a Mobility Aid?

November 13, 2023 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Many older adults, especially those in assisted living communities, are no longer as steady on their feet as they used to be.  This puts them in danger of a fall, and a walker, cane or even a wheelchair or scooter is probably advisable.  However, before you start using a hand-me-down walker or buy any-old cane; experts warn that one size does not fit all.  In the case of a walker, to be an effective and safe mobility aid, it is important to have an expert help you pick out the best type and size for your needs.

As AgingCure.com points out, “The wrong device can negatively affect a senior’s stability, cause posture-related problems and even result in pain. Mobility aids come in all shapes and sizes, so selecting the right equipment and achieving a proper fit usually requires a professional’s assistance and expertise.”  To get started determining what your needs are, experts recommend seeing your healthcare provider to discuss any problems you are having with your activities of daily living (ADLs).  If they recognize a need for a mobility aid, they may refer you to an occupational or physical therapist.

The following are a couple of basic guidelines to know before you get started.  A cane can help provide balance and stability and is ideal for someone who needs to support no more than 25% of their body weight.  It is most useful for those minimally impaired or with weakness in one leg.   Walkers are available in a variety of models but regardless of the style a “correct height of a walker is measured from the floor to the wrist, and the elbows should be flexed in a range of 15 to 20 degrees.”  Experts also say the walker must be large enough to provide front and side support for the user.

A motorized scooter may be the answer for someone who has lost the ability to walk any distance but still has an adequate amount of strength in their arms and upper body to stay upright as well as drive the scooter.  Again, there are a variety of models including indoor and outdoor ones as well.  Keep in mind though that most insurance companies and Medicare Part B typically only cover scooters for in-house use.

MorningStar of Wheat Ridge is a senior living community in Metro Denver with 45 private assisted living suites in a variety of floor plans.  In addition, our Reflections Neighborhood has 19 memory care suites devoted to the specialized care of those with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. Assisted Living Communities Give Families Peace of Mind

November 10, 2023 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Are you worried about your elderly parents getting the care they need at home? Assisted living communities are one way to make sure they get the care they need, while giving family members the peace of mind they need.

To help ensure the community you choose is a good, all-around fit, experts say the trick is to find one based on your parents’ needs, their lifestyle and budget. A Place for Mom, one of the largest senior living referral websites, says the key to a successful move for mom or dad is to have a frank and open conversation with the family to make sure everyone is on the same page. Be sure your parents have the chance to give their opinion.

When you begin the actual search, remember assisted living is not a nursing home or memory care. To determine the best community for them, start by addressing their ADLs’ (activities of daily living) needs. Keep in mind the amount of help they need right now and how much help they will most likely need over the next couple of years. After all, you do not want to go through the process of getting them settled into a community and then face another move if their needs can no longer be met.

Determine your parents’ budget, and if you need help in that area, seek advice from an elder care financial service or attorney. At MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care of Wheat Ridge, we have partnered with Elderlife Financial Services to present different financial resources commonly used to pay for senior living.

Another important step is to visit (either in person or virtually) the community and to get to know the staff. Narrowing down your choices includes considering things such as how convenient it will be for the family to visit and is it located close to medical facilities, shopping and other services. Furthermore, find out if the community is accepting new residents, and if not, you may want to go on their waiting list.

At MorningStar of Wheat Ridge, we offer a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community. In addition to assisted living and memory care, we offer respite care and short-term stays (from one week up to a full month) that are ideal to see if we are a good fit. Please contact us to learn more about exceptional senior living in Wheat Ridge, CO.

Top 3 Reasons Alzheimer’s Care is Right For Your Parent

October 27, 2023 by Quinn A in Alzheimer’s care

Some seniors in the early stages of dementia may be able to live independently or with their children or loved ones with some help. However, as the disease progresses, providing the right level of care may become difficult. While you want your loved one struggling with Alzheimer’s to stay comfortable, happy, and properly watched over, you may also be wondering if there are other options for Alzheimer’s care that you have yet to consider.

For whatever reason, home may no longer be the best place for your senior parent battling memory loss. Keep reading to explore the top 3 reasons why Alzheimer’s care might be right for your parents and your family.

Routine

Seniors with dementia and memory loss respond well to regular routines and schedules. In fact, these individuals may react negatively if their routine is impacted in some way. For growing families, families with constantly changing schedules, or families with inconsistent work hours, a senior in need of Alzheimer’s care may require more structure and attentiveness. This doesn’t mean you aren’t doing a good job; this just means that your parents or loved one is going through changes that our lives don’t always take into account.

In a trusted memory care community, seniors receive structured Alzheimer care that is adjusted to their schedule, preferences, and family wishes. Seniors and their families can find personalized Alzheimer’s care at MorningStar Senior Living Littleton Co.

Health and Safety

Homes aren’t generally built with memory care in mind. This means if a loved one with a memory loss diagnosis lives alone or with family, their home may not be properly equipped for the health and safety of that senior. With accommodations it is possible, but this requires planning, finances, and constantly changing preferences and needs.

The Benefits of Personalized Care in Assisted Living

October 27, 2023 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Senior living is no longer “one-size-fits-all.” This means seniors receive the proper amount and type of care they require in assisted living communities Des Moines. At MorningStar at Jordan Creek, their caregivers believe personalized care plans create the most unique senior living Des Moines has seen.

Personalized care plans are specialized to a senior’s physical, emotional, and social needs. Developed with family, care providers, medical professionals, and the care team at MorningStar, seniors receive structured assisted living support through a personalized care plan.

Specialized Support

One of the biggest benefits of personalized assisted living care plans is that they allow seniors to receive care that is tailored specifically to them. This plan is designed to meet the individual where they are at. Specialized support makes seniors feel seen and understood and can greatly impact their mental health and overall happiness.

Preventing Isolation

Upon the initial screening, your assisted living community will understand your loved one’s habits, mental health, social preferences, and much more. Through regular check-ins and monitoring, it is easy to determine if a senior is experiencing any changes in social habits. By catching these issues quickly, MorningStar’s care team can remedy the situation and keep your loved one social and active.

Regular Evaluation

Personalized care plans are not set in stone. Caregivers should understand that seniors, like anyone, change over time. Our preferences, medical needs, and skills change regularly, so why shouldn’t seniors’ also change? Through regular evaluation, senior living communities in Des Moines can determine what parts of the care plan need to change so that a resident is living their life to the fullest.

The Top Benefits of Music Therapy in Memory Care

October 23, 2023 by Quinn A in Senior Living

A memory loss diagnosis means more than just being “forgetful.” Seniors who are struggling with memory loss or Alzheimer’s experience difficult emotions and newfound frustration. Currently, there is no cure for Alzheimer’s, which is a form of dementia that commonly impacts seniors aged 65 and up. While there may not be an accepted treatment plan for dementia, Alzheimer’s care professionals all agree that certain therapies and activities prove successful with this disease.

MorningStar Senior Living offers the best Alzheimer’s care Littleton Co has to offer seniors struggling with a memory loss diagnosis. Holistic Alzheimer’s care focuses on more natural approaches to treatment. Keep reading to explore the top benefits of music therapy in memory care for seniors seeking Alzheimer’s care and treatment.

What is Music Therapy?

Music therapy is a simple, yet effective Alzheimer’s care method that engages and soothes seniors with dementia and memory loss. It’s been shown that seniors with Alzheimer’s or dementia who regularly attend music therapy respond powerfully to activity, even in the late stages of the disease.Generally, music therapy can look like a musician coming into a senior living community weekly to play music and get seniors active and engaged in the audience. However, there are simpler methods of music therapy, as well. Memory care and music therapy are essential components of MorningStar Senior Living Littleton, CO.

Music Therapy Methods

As mentioned above, music therapy usually consists of visiting musicians. However, almost everyone has access to music wherever they go these days. Your smartphone, laptop, tablet, or T.V. are excellent sources for music therapy.

When visiting a senior in Alzheimer’s care, play one of their favorite songs for them. This act will hopefully bring back familiar memories, emotions, and feelings that are attached to the song. Not only this, but watching a music video, a musical, or a performance can stimulate the mind and encourage memories to emerge.

Not All Memory Problems are Caused by Dementia Diseases

October 18, 2023 by Quinn A in Memory care

Many of us have been embarrassed by forgetting someone’s name when we unexpectedly run into them or missing an appointment. The Medical News Today (MNT) describes short-term memory as the brain systems involved in storing information for short periods, usually up to about 30 seconds. Short-term memory typically holds about seven pieces of information at a time. Our long-term memory is where old memories are stored.

Experts remind seniors not all problems with memory loss are caused by Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia but rather some are age-related or caused by outside factors. One example is sleep as research shows lack of sleep interferes with short-term memory and is vital to memory consolidation, which is the process of preserving key memories and discarding excessive or irrelevant information. Drinking too much alcohol and using recreational drugs also interfere with memory consolation; and overtime can cause irreversible damage to both short and long-term memory.

Other issues that cause memory loss can be medications (check with your doctor), infections such as Lyme disease, urinary tract infections (UTI), and organ failure, such as liver failure. Even a small amount of hearing or vision loss can interfere with a person’s ability to take in and process new information. Experts say once the problem is solved such as with hearing aids, memory problems should improve.

Chronic cardiovascular problems like hypertension and high cholesterol impair blood flow to the brain, leading to a condition called vascular dementia. Depression, anxiety, chronic stress and post-traumatic stress disorder additionally have the potential to cause memory problems but typically go away once the underlying problems are resolved. For any of these various reasons, it is important to consult with your healthcare provider if you are having memory problems as it could be treatable.

Along with assisted living, MorningStar at Mountain Shadows in Colorado Springs offers specialized memory care to those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. How To Move a Parent to Assisted Living

October 16, 2023 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

It is difficult to make the decision to move a parent from their home into assisted living. Coping with the general grief of aging is tremendously stressful, especially while watching your parents struggle to complete tasks and daily activities. You want the best life possible for your parents; sometimes we can’t always give them that. Regardless of your current situation, you can find the most trusted assisted living Des Moines has to offer seniors at MorningStar Senior Living. By reading this guide, you will be more equipped in knowing how to move a parent to assisted living.

Finding the Ideal Senior Living Community

In the age of information, you may feel overwhelmed with the amount of senior living. How can you know which one is the best for you, your parents, and your family?

Assessing Needs

Before you begin touring senior living communities, assess what your parent’s needs are. For assisted living options, keep record of activities, chores, errands, and daily tasks that your parents struggle with or that you wish would be more properly managed. For meal preparation, find a community that has an on-site chef to prepare fresh meals. To complete daily hygiene tasks, find a community that offers trusted assisted living caregivers and staff.

Touring

After you have done your research, you will likely have a few senior living communities in mind. Requesting tours of these communities is a surefire way to know if it is the right place for you and your parents. When you arrive, be mindful of their outdoor amenities and safety protocols. Within the community, check on how staff interact with the residents and their families. It is also necessary to check for other safety technologies within the building like cameras, railings, or locks.

Meet with Management

To know if the senior living community can properly accommodate your parent’s needs, meet with a caretaker manager. Discuss your parent’s current needs and what you think they may require going forward. It is smart to be prepared for other changes that may come with aging.

Find Assisted Living Options Near You

Help Maintain and Enhance Memory Function

In an article in the US News & World Report, experts say forgetfulness is not an inevitable part of growing older and there are things we can do to help maintain and enhance our memory function and overall brain health.  Furthermore, they also benefit whole body health.

One of the first things they recommend is to never stop making “physical activity a priority as it optimizes blood flow to the entire body, including the brain.  An adequate supply of blood and oxygen to the brain helps to keep our memories sharp.”  Researchers explain that the type of exercise is also important and recommend a minimum of 30 minutes a day of cardio exercise such as running, power walking, biking, or swimming.  However, before beginning any new exercise regime, be sure to check with your healthcare provider.

In addition, continuing to learn new things can improve our memory as studies have found a correlation between challenging our brain and maintaining brain health.  This could include activities such as playing an instrument, starting a new hobby, learning a language, or just broadening your reading habits.

Other advice that not only enhances cognitive thinking but overall health includes getting enough sleep each night.  Research has shown that “powering down on a nightly basis allows the brain to heal and restore itself, clearing toxins that can lead to Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia types.”

A Safe Environment for a Those With Alzheimer’s Disease

October 13, 2023 by Quinn A in Memory care

Alzheimer’s disease results in symptoms causing impaired judgement, forgetfulness, and agitation, as well as problems with gait and balance increasing the risk for falls. This is why experts say it is important to take the proper steps to keep a loved one safe if they have Alzheimer’s. They explain the goal of caregivers should be a balancing act between providing an environment that offers as much independence as possible, while at the same time, ensuring the person’s safety and wellbeing.

Recommendations include removing knobs from the stove, and if the person can handle it, install automatic shut-off valves with timer and motion sensors. At a certain stage of the disease, it is not safe for the person to be cooking, and if needed, investigate food delivery services. Additionally, lower the temperature of the water coming from the taps to avoid the person getting scalded from hot water. As confusion is part of Alzheimer’s, experts say store dangerous chemicals and cleaning supplies in a locked area.

To reduce the risk of falls, install grab bars in the bathroom and put non-skid mats in the tub or shower. Stairways should be well-lit and uncluttered as well as hallways and pathways from room to room. Doctors who work with Alzheimer’s patients caution it is important to remember it is a progressive disease, and there may be a time when more restrictive protocols are necessary such as closing off a staircase altogether.

Along with assisted living, MorningStar at Mountain Shadows offers 19 memory care suites for residents suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. The Reflections Neighborhood is designed with the needs of our special residents in mind and includes an enclosed courtyard, suites equipped with emergency call systems, and handicap-accessible bathrooms. Helping Your Parent With Medication Management

October 13, 2023 by Quinn A in Memory care

Chances are if your parents are elderly, they are taking at least one or more prescription medications daily. In fact, the Washington Post cites research that estimates, “25 percent of people ages 65 to 69 take at least five prescription drugs to treat chronic conditions, a figure that jumps to nearly 46 percent for those between 70 and 79.” Polypharmacy refers to the regular use of five or more prescription medications, and puts people more at risk for adverse drug interactions, an area of special concern for the elderly.

Alarming figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state almost 450,000 older adults (65 years old or older) visit the emergency room each year because of adverse, or harmful, drug events. Doctors say while many of these problems are preventable, when you take a number of prescriptions, it can get confusing keeping up with various instructions such as “take on an empty stomach,” and the adverse side effects.

Experts say to help a parent get organized, write down the names of all of the drugs they are taking, the dosage, and if they see several doctors, who prescribed them. Include any herbal supplements, multi-vitamins and over-the-counter drugs. The next time they see their primary care doctor, take your list and discuss the reasons for each drug, how long they will be on it, and if any of the drugs are dangerous. Whenever a new drug is prescribed, ask what it is for and how it should be taken, and read through the paperwork.

Store medications together in a cool, dry location (not the bathroom), discard old, expired medications, and find a pill organizer that makes sense for your parent’s needs. If they are forgetful, they may need a reminder system. However, if a parent is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia, they should be carefully monitored.

At MorningStar of Wheat Ridge, our residents’ wellbeing and physical health is our primary concern. This is why one of our many services is medication management that ensures residents take medications properly, and as we even order medications, there is no danger of them running out. Fall Prevention for Older Adults

October 11, 2023 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

The Mayo Clinic reminds older adults it is important they take proper precautions to prevent falls. Medical conditions, the resulting medications needed, and a more sedentary lifestyle can result in weaker muscles and balance problems that can lead to a fall. Also, please keep in mind, a fall for an older adult can cause injuries that are very serious such as a broken hip, head trauma, or in the most severe cases, death.

However, the solution to preventing falls is not to stop moving. The medical experts at the Mayo Clinic explain being inactive is bad for our health regardless of how old we are and it is vital that we keep moving. To that end, they suggest a commonsense six-part plan to keep seniors safely mobile.

Their first recommendation is to set up an appointment with your doctor. Bring to the visit a list of all your medications, and be prepared to discuss with your doctor any side effects of the drugs that may put you more at risk for a fall such as anti-depressants or sedatives. It may be possible to eliminate or substitute the medication for something else. Also, talk to your doctor about whether you have fallen and if it was due to your medical condition.

In addition, discuss with your healthcare provider what type of exercise would be best for you. Typically walking, swimming and something like tai chi are gentle exercises that are safe for most; and offer the benefit of strengthening muscles, improving balance, and gait.

Other ways to lessen your risk for a fall begins by reviewing your home with an eye to fall prevention. Start by checking hallways and stairways for adequate lighting, and add more if needed. Secure loose rugs and make sure you have wide clear paths for walking around your home. Wear proper fitting shoes with nonskid soles and use aids like a cane or walker if needed to help maintain your balance. Install grab bars and railings where needed.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, our beautiful home is designed from the ground up to serve our residents’ every need. Our community offers stylish assisted living suites in a variety of floorplans. In addition, our Reflections Neighborhood has suites devoted to the specialized care of those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. Residents Enjoy Delicious Meals at MorningStar at Mountain Shadows

October 09, 2023 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows in Colorado Springs, we understand the importance of gathering as a community to “break bread” each day. We believe food is a healing medicine unlike any other, and when our residents sit down to a delicious meal served restaurant-style, it creates lasting bonds and fellowship within our “family.

We recognize that good nutrition is especially important to the wellbeing of seniors, which is why MorningStar meals are prepared largely from scratch and feature the freshest ingredients from high-quality producers, locally sourced when possible. Menu offerings are designed by our Executive Chef and include daily and weekly specials as well as a la carte items. Dining is available all day which means you can eat when you are hungry and not according to a rigid schedule.

As a resident, you will be treated to seasonal menus and special holiday feasts such as those we enjoy at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Also, our Chef modifies menus and recipes to accommodate residents’ changing needs and tastes. Moreover, you can easily self-manage any dietary restrictions as we offer a wide selection of low sodium, sugar-free, no sugar added, and low-fat foods.

MorningStar at Mountain Shadows also believes that nutrient-rich ingredients can help stimulate the appetite and support brain health. Therefore, we prepare meals using BrainWise super foods that contain a high concentration of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds. Super foods include acai, leafy dark greens, dark chocolates, berries, and fish, nuts and other foods high in Omega 3 fats.

For our memory care residents, food is as much about Community as it is about Nutrition. To encourage appetites, our team members sit and share meals with residents, and many are served “family style” as they are in private homes. Much of our food is modified out of respect for residents’ somewhat compromised eating abilities and includes finger foods, texture-modified diets and easy-to-recognize balanced meals that taste as good as they look.

Located at the foot of the Rocky Mountains, MorningStar at Mountain Shadows is convenient to medical facilities, shopping, restaurants and other services. We have 45 stylish suites for assisted living and another 19 suites in our Reflections Neighborhood devoted to those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.
