How to Get Involved in Your Senior Living Community

September 22, 2023 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Staying social and active within your community can be difficult as we age. However, social interaction is vital for everyone’s well-being, especially seniors. Seniors not living in active senior care communities are more susceptible to social isolation. This is why seniors should be aware of the best social opportunities in senior living Des Moines has to offer.

Along with helping you navigate all the changes that come with growing older, MorningStar Senior Living and Assisted Living Des Moines focuses on your social well-being to provide mental and physical health benefits.

Recreation is important for seniors because having an active social life helps prevent depression and anxiety. Aside from all the amenities MorningStar has to offer, they advocate for community involvement by joining groups and pursuing hobbies. Sharing common interests and staying socially active makes it relatively easy to make friends at MorningStar if you want to venture out and try new things.

Would you consider yourself a bookworm? Joining a book club or starting one yourself is a great way to make new friends through a shared interest. Bonding over the discussion of books is an intimate way to get to know others. Plus, the routine of reading a book over time will keep you engaged and focused.

For seniors who prefer a physically and socially active lifestyle, joining workout classes is the right step to making new friends. Yoga, low-intensity workouts, and water aerobics are all low-risk physical activities for seniors. Joining a group like this is a safe way for seniors to keep their bodies healthy while socializing and meeting new people.

Some senior living communities have their gardens. At MorningStar, many assisted living residents enjoy tending to the garden and growing their own foods. Nurturing plants in a
collective garden has been found to give seniors a feeling of calmness and aid in a sense of
importance within the community. The group effort of growing and maintaining a living thing, such as plants, gives seniors in a retirement community the feeling of accomplishment, too!

MorningStar Assisted Living Des Moines provides high-quality care and safety assurances for seniors, making it an excellent choice for families seeking a safe and secure senior living community. With a commitment to safety, experienced staff members, and state-of-the-art safety features, you can be confident that your loved one will receive the best care possible with us at MorningStar.

Separating Age-Related Memory Loss From Dementia

September 11, 2023 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Expert report “at least half of those over age 65 say they are more forgetful than they were when they were younger, experiencing ‘senior moments’ of things like where they put things or recalling somebody’s name.” While several studies show as many as 40 percent of seniors suffer from some level of memory loss, this doesn’t necessarily mean Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia.

Doctors say we need to remember Alzheimer’s is not a normal part of aging, and there are some characteristics which separate age-related memory loss from dementia. One example is forgetting how to program your remote control or operate a piece of machinery after not doing it for a while. They stress this is common and typically not a cause for concern but forgetting how to get home or perform routine tasks may be a sign of a bigger problem.

Another symptom of Alzheimer’s or other memory loss diseases is forgetting what an object is used for or what it is. Someone with Alzheimer’s can forget they wear glasses or not recognize the glasses as their own. The same goes for forgetting names. A common problem is to forget a person’s name but a more serious problem is to forget easy words or replace them with something strange, making the person difficult to understand.

However, feeling you are forgetful may be cause for concern according to Dr. Barry Reisberg, director of the Fisher Alzheimer’s Disease Education and Resources Program at New York University Langone Medical Center. In a study in which Dr. Reisberg was involved, the findings showed “seniors with subjective memory complaints are, over many years, 4.5 times more likely to develop mild cognitive impairment or dementia than those who do not have such memory complaints.” Therefore, it is important to talk to your healthcare provider about any worries you may have.

Along with assisted living, MorningStar at Mountain Shadows in Colorado Springs offers specialized care for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. Alzheimer’s Disease Affects the Whole Family

September 06, 2023 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

The Alzheimer’s Association explains Alzheimer’s is a disease that not only affects the individual but robs family members of their loved one. As the disease progresses, it takes away more and more of the person and the family begins to mourn the loss. While grief has different phases including denial, anger, guilt, sadness and acceptance in no particular order; universally shared by most families is unease about what the future holds and what to expect next.

Hope is a powerful human emotion so denying the disease is a coping mechanism for some as they try to convince themselves their loved one will get better or not reach the level of devastation experienced by many suffering from the disease. Others may refuse to recognize the changed behavior and make excuses for it.

Spouses and significant others may experience anger as they feel abandoned by the person and frustrated at their inability to do anything about it. They may also feel resentment and overwhelmed by caregiving duties but experts say it is important to be honest with yourself. Recognize you need more support and ask for it.

Other feelings of grief include guilt. A person may worry they have not done enough or are not visiting often enough. While unrealistic, spouses may feel guilty they are still able to enjoy life while their wife or husband is no longer able. If a caregiver is not getting enough support, they may even experience thoughts about wishing the person would die or go away. The Alzheimer’s Association says it is important to get the help and support you need and to accept your feelings and remember grief is part of the journey.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, we understand the devastation families feel when they get a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. We know the path going forward is unplanned for, and we consider it our privilege – our calling to walk alongside the memory-impaired and their family on their unexpected journey. MorningStar offers experienced, compassionate care for those in the early onset of Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases right through to the most advanced stages.

Medications That Can Cause Falls

September 04, 2023 by Quinn A in Senior Living

The Harvard Medical School reports it is estimated 1 in 3 people over age 65 will fall each year, and every 19 minutes a senior dies from a fall-related injury. Statistics show women are at higher risk for a fall but men are more likely to die from their injuries than women.

Seniors should be aware of several things that can affect balance and lead to a fall. These include certain medications, inner ear problems, foot pain, weight changes and a vitamin D deficiency. Anti-hypertensive medications prescribed to keep blood pressure under control or decrease the risk of stroke and heart failure are all known to affect balance. A common side effect is orthostatic hypotension, a condition that happens if blood pressure gets too low; and results in lightheadedness, faintness and dizziness especially when the person attempts to stand from a sitting or lying down position.

Medications that suppress the central nervous system may also result in a fall as they reduce alertness, and slow reactions and movements. Some of these types of drugs include anti-anxiety medications like diazepam (Valium) and lorazepam (Ativan). Additionally, antihistamines can cause drowsiness and are used in over-the-counter sleep aids like Nyquil and Sominex, or combined with acetaminophen in products like Tylenol PM.

If you or a loved one takes medication to treat an overactive bladder or tricyclic antidepressants to help lessen chronic pain, they too can affect a person’s balance. Other drugs that increase the risk of a fall are opioids such as codeine, hydrocodone and oxycodone.

MorningStar at Mountain Shadows is a senior living community in Colorado Springs with 45 private assisted living suites in various floor plans. In addition, our Reflections Neighborhood has 19 secure suites devoted to the specialized care of those with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. August 28, 2023 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Hip fractures are unfortunately very common for seniors in the United States. A majority of these accidents are caused by falling sideways, tripping, or a loss of mobility. Accidental falls result from typical physical changes that come with time, such as weakened bones and joints, balance issues, and loss of muscle mass. Signs of B12 Deficiency in Seniors

August 25, 2023 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

As we’ve been told by our parents, doctors, and social media… vitamins and minerals are extremely important for our overall health and well-being. Taking supplements is nothing to be ashamed of. In fact, did you know the human body can’t produce most of the vitamins we need to survive? B12 is a vitamin our bodies do not naturally produce and it can be difficult to incorporate enough B12 in our diets. Seniors especially struggle in getting an adequate amount of B12. Knowing this, MorningStar Senior Living and Assisted Living of Des Moines, Iowa is mindful of the Signs and effects of B12 Deficiency in Seniors.

Unfortunately, B12 deficiency is very common, especially among older adults. This is a problem because a lack of B12 can cause, or worsen, cognitive impairment and mobility issues. At MorningStar, our executive chefs are equipped with knowledge of vitamins and supplements.

Our trained Executive Chefs design seasonal menus for our assisted living residents that feature the freshest ingredients from high-quality producers; all locally sourced when possible! At MorningStar, our senior living community understands diets alter as we age. Our Chefs are trained in how best to modify menus and recipes to accommodate changing needs and tastes. Our nutritional choices include low-sodium, sugar-free, no-sugar-added, vegetarian, and low-fat for residents to self-manage.

Due to its nature, B12 is available to humans in meat and dairy products. Those that opt for a more vegetarian or vegan diet may be lacking in B12 greater than others. We recommend taking a daily multivitamin to produce B12 for seniors. If you are an avid meat eater, however, this does not mean you are not at risk. As we age, our bodies slow our ability to absorb B12. That is why it is recommended for everyone, regardless of diet, to be mindful of their B12 intake.

Productive Memory Care Activities for Seniors with Alzheimer’s

August 23, 2023 by Quinn A in Memory care

If your senior partner or elderly loved one has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, you may have noticed that everyday activities have become more difficult and frustrating for them. Although chores, meal cooking, hygiene, and everyday activities have become more wearisome, your elderly loved one will still have the need to feel successful. Holistic memory care offered at MorningStar Senior Living and Alzheimer’s Care in Des Moines, Iowa provides productive memory care activities for seniors with Alzheimer’s to help ease Alzheimer’s symptoms and increase overall happiness and joy.

Being happily engaged in activities reduces frustration, agitation, and depression which are often byproducts of Alzheimer’s. In order to help your elderly loved one feel productive and successful, MorningStar Senior Living incorporates holistic memory care methods that are utilized by our specialty-trained memory care team.

Each individual is different. By learning more about a senior with Alzheimer’s, and their quirks, preferences, and special needs, we can holistically care for their memory loss by engaging in activities that fulfill them. Seniors with Alzheimer’s enjoy feeling needed and helpful. Asking your loved one struggling with dementia or Alzheimer’s to help you fold laundry will keep them occupied and give them an activity that will leave them feeling successful in the end.

Likewise, asking a senior to carry a baby doll will remind them of the joy of caring for children. This doll will keep their hands busy and provide them with a duty. In properly caring for this doll, they will feel as though they have been of service.

Providing unique and engaging activities is what we do best at MorningStar Memory Care for Seniors with Alzheimer’s. We’ve learned that seniors struggling with dementia find accomplishment in untying knots in rope and yarn. If these are loosely tied, seniors can easily loosen these knots and will feel great joy in knowing they’ve helped you fix something.

Tips for Meaningful Connection for Those with an Alzheimer’s Diagnosis

August 23, 2023 by Quinn A in Memory care

Consider the most recent immediate connection you had with a close friend, neighbor, or colleague. Often, we make friends with those who share similar backgrounds, interests, and hobbies. Contrary to popular belief, it is no different for someone with dementia or an Alzheimer’s Diagnosis. Everyone wants to feel appreciated and connected to their loved ones and the people around them. At MorningStar Senior Living, we believe that although communication with someone struggling with a memory loss diagnosis may look and feel different, it is still possible. Not only are these connections possible, but with some tips, you can spark a meaningful connection with your loved one again in spite of an Alzheimer’s diagnosis.

In our experience at MorningStar Senior Living and Memory Care, although someone with Alzheimer’s may not remember names or complete aspects of faces, they do remember the emotional experiences they shared with you. Igniting these meaningful collections may mean bringing in photo albums, home videos, and other keepsakes that you two created together. While they may not fully remember the intricate details of the events you share, they remember how these events felt to them, and they will be grateful to experience that with you again.

At MorningStar, we practice holistic memory care methods. This means, accepting our memory care residents as they are. If you are experiencing frustration with your loved one due to repetitive questions or prolonged silence and confusion, it may feel like the connection between you two is gone. Know that this is fear talking, and your loved one is still with you. Let the details go, and enjoy the time and experiences you two can still actively share together.

Nonverbal communication is effective communication. Holding hands, hugs, eye contact, and body movements mean so much when verbal abilities are hindered. Exploring more nonverbal techniques at MorningStar will help you expand this connection further.

In addition to the types of food we eat, dieticians say it is also important to pay attention to portion size when attempting to shed a few pounds as it will help us reach our goal. When trying to diet, sticking to nutrient-dense, relatively low-calorie foods such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean meats and poultry are your best choices; but no matter how healthy a food is, you still should not over consume.

This is where portion control plays a part. Amy Gorin, a plant-based registered dietitian and owner of Plant-Based Eats, a collection of curated meal plans, grocery lists and nutrition tip sheets, explains that whole foods like almond butter and dark chocolate are good for us, they should be eaten in moderation and in proper portions. In other words, the bottom-line is a large chocolate bar should not be consumed in one sitting.

However, to complicate matters, experts explain that in many cases, strictly following portion sizes suggested on the container would differ from what a registered dietician would recommend. The problem with across-the-board portion sizes is they do not address the age group, gender, and activity level of the individual person. Add to that, portion size is a critical component to losing weight especially in foods that are higher in calories.

Also eating the right amount of food helps to maintain a balanced gut. The Harvard Health Men’s Watch, suggests “a healthy gut microbiome stimulates the body’s immune system and may shield against an array of chronic diseases, including cancer, heart disease and rheumatoid arthritis.”

Exceptional Assisted Living & Memory Care in Colorado Springs

August 11, 2023 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

MorningStar at Mountain Shadows’ goal is to be the best senior living community in Colorado Springs. We attribute our success to God’s grace and to staying true to our mission of servant-leadership. To help us accomplish these lofty goals, we are blessed to have a team of individuals with big hearts and a true love for seniors.

Our founding principles are based on “casting a new light” on senior living and treating each resident with the utmost respect and dignity. We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and contribute is ageless; and we act upon this truth daily as we care for, inspire and love the residents under our roof. At MorningStar we want seniors to recognize they are never too old to set a goal or to dream a new dream.

We take great pride in a reputation for excellence and authenticity in both how we serve and why we serve throughout our MorningStar communities in eleven states. Specializing in compassionate care delivered by our distinguished team and guided by our proprietary program “Radiance,” we know the highest expression of living is when we are fully engaged in sharing with others our talents, time and energy.

As people are living longer than any other time in history (by 2055 90 million Americans will be 55+ and the number of people 75 to 85 is set to triple), senior living is quickly becoming a popular option for older adults. Residents appreciate predictable budgeting, luxury amenities and services, companionship and a carefree lifestyle.

Seniors’ wellbeing, comfort and safety are something MorningStar at Mountain Shadows takes very seriously. Our beautiful community has 45 assisted living suites as well as 19 suites in our Reflections Neighborhood devoted to the care of those suffering from Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related diseases. Planning Your Next Visit to a Loved One in Assisted Living

August 09, 2023 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Especially on birthdays and holidays, many of us wish to brighten the day for a loved one in an assisted living community by letting them know they are very special to us. To help make our visit more meaningful, experts provide some tips to keep in mind when we visit.

You may want to plan in advance an activity your loved one would enjoy doing with you during your visit. Examples include bringing along a puzzle to work on, a Scrabble board or a trivia game. You could get prints of current photos of the family made to add to an album or start a new one. If they are a music lover, bring some new music to enjoy together. If they enjoy listening to stories, get an audiobook to listen to or buy a favorite family movie to watch together. If they like sending greeting cards to family and friends, buy a box of cards and help get them ready to mail. If they get pleasure from being pampered, bring along the supplies to give them a manicure.

If the weather is cooperative, take advantage of the community’s outdoor area to soak up the sun or take your loved one to a local park and plan to share a simple meal of sandwiches and a drink. Bringing your kids along automatically provides a more cheerful energy and will give the resident pleasant memories long after the little ones have gone home. However, do keep in mind that too many visitors at a time can be hectic and it may be better to spread out the visits.

If you do want to bring gifts, remember the person most likely does not have a lot of extra room for anything too big. Gifts of food are generally welcomed and can be shared with others in the community. Other tips include not visiting when you are ill, and be sure to wash your hands when you first come in to avoid spreading germs.

At MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care at Mountain Shadows, we provide lots of activities and programs for our residents, but we know they always look forward to seeing their family. Our community has beautiful and inviting common areas to enjoy with visiting family and friends. For assisted living Colorado Springs seniors can count on, we encourage you to consider MorningStar, the perfect community to age in place comfortably and safely.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003. We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. Have You Used the Internet for Medical Information?

August 07, 2023 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Let’s be honest, many of us rely on the Internet for medical advice. While it can supply good answers, doctors also caution you have to be careful what sites you trust. There are many websites providing good medical information but there are also sites with misleading or even dangerous advice.

Dr. Michael Langan, an internal medicine physician at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, cautions anyone with a blog can dispense information and advice; and a good way to avoid misinformation is to ask your doctor to recommend the sites they trust. Additionally, the National Institute on Aging recommends using health websites sponsored by Federal Government agencies. They say a good place for reliable, up-to-date information is the National Institutes of Health, but at the same time, remind everyone that the Internet is no substitute for seeing your doctor or other health professional who can give you advice that caters to your specific situation.

Other things to look for include name recognition such as the Mayo Clinic or the Cleveland Clinic. Moreover, remember sites that end in .gov, identity U.S. government agencies; .edu, educational institutions; and .org, usually designates nonprofit organizations (such as professional groups; scientific, medical, or research societies; and advocacy groups). A .com is a commercial site.

The NIH says to look for the date of the information (often can be found at the bottom of the page) and see if the authors and contributors are identified. If the author is listed, what is his/her background and what is their goal in writing the article or the intent of the organization it is written for. Is there any financial motive for the information? Check out the About Us or Contact Us pages as they provide background information about the organization.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows in Colorado Springs, we promote a healthy, engaged lifestyle, while providing comfort and security. Our beautiful home has 45 stylish assisted living suites with a choice of floor plans. Join a Book Club this Summer!: How Reading is Beneficial for Senior Wellness

July 21, 2023 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Reading, as we all know, is an excellent source of relaxation. However, no one is likely reading enough these days. Reading engages the mind and keeps the brain actively engaged. This is why a MorningStar Assisted Living Community near you advocates for book clubs in their assisted living communities. For seniors in assisted living that may have physical limitations or reduced mobility, reading provides a mentally engaging and fulfilling activity, especially in a group setting. Building community over a good book is a great way to keep seniors actively engaged and mentally stimulated in assisted living care.

Reading opens the door to continuous learning and personal growth. Through reading, seniors explore new topics and expand their horizons. Offering access to books through libraries and digital reading platforms is just one way assisted living communities grant seniors this wealth of knowledge. By encouraging and facilitating book clubs, MorningStar empowers seniors to continue their literary journey and make lasting, lifelong friends along the way.

By organizing and promoting book clubs in our community, residents come together to discuss and share their chosen books and love for reading. This group gives seniors something to look forward to and keeps their minds busy and engaged. For seniors that struggle with mobility and may be unable to participate fully in outdoor activities, book club provides a safe alternative to physical pursuits while still allowing residents to remain mentally active and entertained.

Engaging in regular reading has been shown to have positive effects on memory and recognition. Knowing this, MorningStar encourages seniors to maintain and improve their memory function through reading. With memory care being a priority for some residents in assisted living, joining a book club will help to reduce stress, improve memory, and benefit overall happiness.
