When a Family Member is Diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease

December 23, 2022 by Quinn A in Senior Living

When a loved one is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, it is devastating news for all.  Family members may quickly start experiencing feelings of grief as they recognize their life is about to be changed by the disease and are uneasy about what the future will hold.  Most are left with questions about what to expect next.

As Alzheimer’s begins to take away the person we know and love, the Alzheimer’s Association explains that, “you'll mourn him or her and may experience the different phases of grieving: denial, anger, guilt, sadness and acceptance.”  They remind us that feelings of grief do not come in a specific order but rather we go in and out of the various stages.

Feelings of denial include unrealistically hoping the person is not ill or expecting them to get better.  Others try to convince themselves their loved one has not changed or try to normalize and make excuses for their behaviors.  Anger may include being frustrated with the person or feeling abandoned.  You may also experience feelings of resentment with the demands of caregiving and/or resent others who are not helping with care.

Guilt includes having unrealistic thoughts about what you should have done or feeling guilty if you do not visit every day.  A spouse that is well and still able to enjoy life may feel guilty that their husband or wife is no longer able to do so.  Others may have negative feelings such as wishing the person would die or go away.

The Alzheimer’s Association says you need to face both your positive as well as negative feelings.  They also say to be prepared to go through feelings of loss more than once as the disease progresses.  Remember your grief is a part of your journey, and if you need help, talk with someone about your feelings.

At MorningStar of Wheat Ridge, our goal is to provide the best senior living in the area, which includes compassionate and loving memory care to those suffering from Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Our memory care residents are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve and spend each day in an atmosphere that celebrates and elevates their lives. Holistic Memory Care in Colorado

December 16, 2022 by Quinn A in Memory care

You don't have to go through an Alzheimer’s or dementia diagnosis alone. Whether it’s for you, a parent, or a loved one, you may find yourself feeling in need of some outside assistance, and memory care communities are wonderful environments that are ideal for seniors with Alzheimer’s and dementia. In fact, studies show that a senior living in a memory care community will experience a higher quality of life than when they live at home alone. At MorningStar senior living of Littleton, your loved one will live in an apartment-like home complete with safety features and surrounded by caring neighbors and nurturing staff members.

Holistic memory care can be defined as engaging a patient’s body, mind, and spirit without turning to unnecessary modes of medication to treat uncomfortable behavior. MorningStar senior living is a senior care community that is intent on knowing about a resident’s whole wellness and personality. From physical health to hobbies, interests, walks of life and more, caring for the whole person starts with taking the time to understand them, both before and after their memory loss diagnosis. For our care towards those with Alzheimer’s, knowing who they were before is just as important as knowing who they are now.

MorningStar’s signature philosophy and approach to dementia care is described by the expanse of possibilities we call “Lavender Sky.” Under this mantra, our ambition as senior living caregivers is to thoughtfully enter, embrace and explore the world of dementia, instead of shying away from the diagnosis.

Assisted Living Offers a Variety of Benefits

December 16, 2022 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Assisted living communities such as MorningStar at Mountain Shadows are designed to offer seniors 24/7 personal care with a wide range of wellness services targeted to their needs. A Place for Mom, one of the largest senior living referral websites, explains in many cases, today’s communities may be a healthier, safer alternative for many elderly adults. Along with giving residents the help they need to maintain their independence, residents and families get peace of mind knowing someone is always around to lend a helping hand as well as all the benefits derived from the social connections offered by community life.

A Place for Mom cites several studies, which shows the extensive services and programs offered by assisted living can aid seniors in avoiding many commonplace problems affecting the elderly. Getting the proper nutrition is one of those things as many elderly people struggle with meal prep and cooking, and for those who are no longer driving, buying groceries can be challenging. At MorningStar of Mountain Shadows, our Executive Chef specializes in creating tasty, nutritional meals designed to delight our residents.

Another problem many elderly adults have is managing medications properly. In fact, the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists estimate people age 65 to 69 take an average of 15 prescriptions a year so it is no wonder many seniors get confused. However, experts warn skipping doses or taking too much medication can result in deadly consequences and unfortunately too many seniors end up in the hospital each year due to medication “non-compliance.”  For this reason, MorningStar offers medication management to our residents.

Perhaps most importantly we provide a full range of wellness programs and activities designed to keep residents engaged mentally, physically, spiritually and socially. Our holistic support allows residents to enjoy their golden years and live as comfortably and as safely as possible. Contact us for more information about exceptional assisted living in Colorado Springs.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. Companion Living in Retirement Communities

December 16, 2022 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

At MorningStar Assisted Living Des Moines, couples can continue to live together in assisted living. Couples can live together in their own suites in assisted living, surrounded by their own treasured possessions. Alternatively, suites can be shared by close friends who simply enjoy one another’s company. Companion living for seniors in assisted living is a great option for those that need a little extra care and attention from those they trust. Within its communities, MorningStar Senior Living Des Moines offers Assisted Living with support at various levels and Around-the-clock Care Managers that are on site and at the ready to ensure your comfort and safety as you make MorningStar your home.

Assisted living is a senior living arrangement offered at senior living communities that lends a helping hand to seniors who may be struggling to complete or maintain everyday activities or routines. Many of the seniors in assisted living communities can still promote and advocate for their own freedom and independence. If you feel you or a loved one may need assisted living in Des Moines, take the time to consider what services are needed. Upon meeting with a care manager at MorningStar Senior Living Des Moines, Iowa, we will ask a series of questions to create the level of care best suited for the individual. Questions like, what daily activities you need help with, such as bathing, dressing, toileting, eating, remembering medications. Also, consider how often help required with those activities.

Companion living for seniors in assisted living is a great option for those who are most comfortable living with someone they know and trust. Living with a trustworthy companion in assisted living helps to keep an eye on one another. These individuals are already used to their loved ones needs and habits, which can help the other one to acclimate easier and begin to make their senior living facility their home. A companion can also update care managers and nurses within their senior living facility if routines or completion with activities begin to change. Those closest to us have the ability to pick up on things quicker than others sometimes and can notify caregivers when necessary.

You Can Enjoy Quality Alzheimer’s Care

December 14, 2022 by Quinn A in Alzheimer’s care

Language loss is an unfortunate reality for seniors struggling with Alzheimer’s or dementia. It can be hard for seniors to express distress in conventional ways that we are used to communicating. If you are looking for quality Alzheimer’s care in a senior living community, MorningStar’s staff is committed to using holistic and comprehensive problem-solving processes in senior memory care.

Sometimes, really basic bodily issues, like pain, hunger or thirst, or even an environment that’s too hot or too cold, will lead a senior dealing with memory loss to act out of confusion or frustration. This may be very difficult and confusing for family members to experience and try to ease. MorningStar memory care of Littleton offers specific training that helps meet the unique needs of early, middle, and late stages of Alzheimer’s and other dementia. This specialized training allows our memory care team to keep our residents engaged with purpose and a sense of self throughout the progression of the disease, often without having to move to a new location or administer extra or unneeded medications.

Even though your family member is living with dementia, they still have their own unique interests, likes and dislikes, and routines. MorningStar offers the very best memory care Littleton co has seen by making a point to incorporate those individual interests, passions, and hobbies into their everyday activities. Myths and Facts About Parkinson’s Disease

December 14, 2022 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

We often come to think something is true if we hear it stated as if it is a fact. Doctors say this happens in medicine more frequently than we realize. One such disease with lots of misinformation surrounding it is Parkinson’s disease (PD), a neurodegenerative disorder affecting predominantly dopamine-producing (“dopaminergic”) neurons in a specific area of the brain called substantia nigra. Symptoms develop slowly over years and may include tremors (mainly at rest); bradykinesia (slowness of movement); limb rigidity; and gait and balance problems.

One common misconception regarding PD is it only affects a person’s movement. Doctors explain this is untrue as symptoms can also include: cognitive impairment or dementia, depression and anxiety, sleep dysfunction, pain, apathy, sexual dysfunction, and bowel incontinence. Another thing many people believe is levodopa, one of the most effective treatments for PD, is only effective for a certain amount of time. However, experts say it is not the drug that becomes less potent but the fact that the “key enzyme that converts levodopa to dopamine (aromatic acid decarboxylase or AADC) is predominantly found in the dopamine neurons of the substantia nigra, which are lost during progression of the disease.”

People should know tremors are not always a symptom of PD, and that some people with PD never get them. In terms of the trajectory of the disease, it varies with individuals. Also, research suggests staying physically active can slow progression and reduce symptoms.

Although the cause of the disease is not known nor is there a cure for it, there are treatments used to improve symptoms and allow people to have a good quality of life. While current therapies don’t slow or stop PD, researchers are working to identify biomarkers to enable earlier detection and hope to find better treatments.

Balance Exercises May Reduce Your Risk of Falling

December 12, 2022 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), every year more than one in four people over the age of 65 suffer from a fall, and many of those accidents require a trip to the emergency department.  In addition to serious injuries, some falls even result in death.  To help mitigate the risk, experts recommend that along with safety modifications to the home that elderly adults also do balance exercises.

Balance exercises are relatively easy-to-do and can improve both your balance as well as increase lower body strength.  Ask your doctor for some suggestions or take a look at the Internet. Most do not require special equipment other than someone to assist you if needed.  The exercises can be done throughout the day and each one only takes a few minutes to do.

One example of a balance exercise is called Tightrope Walk.  This easy exercise improves balance, posture, and core strength.  Start in a standing position and lift your arms extending them out to your sides.  Now walk in a straight line keeping your gaze focused on a fixed point in the distance.  Each time you raise your foot, pause with it in the raised position for 2 to 3 seconds.  Alternating your feet, continue for 20 to 30 steps.

Another exercise is Rock the Boat, which starts by standing with your feet hip-distance apart and extending your arms out to your sides.  Lift your left foot off the floor and bend your knee to bring your heel toward your bottom holding it there for up to 30 seconds.  Now do the same with the other side.  Do each side 3 times.

At MorningStar Assisted Living and Memory Care at Mountain Shadows, we understand the importance of our resident’s living life to the fullest.  This is why we offer a Life Enrichment program that focuses on creative ways to stay physically, intellectually, socially and spiritually active.  Please see our website for more information about our beautiful community in Colorado Springs.

This post is intended for informational purposes only.  Before beginning any exercises, please consult with your health care provider.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. Adding Beans to Your Diet May Help You Live to 100

December 09, 2022 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

When we look at cultures with a reputation for longevity, leading nutritionists and food scientists say there is one food group that stands out. “Blue zones,” areas known for having many of their inhabitants live to an advanced age of hundred years or more, include in their diet, five of the ten most recommended foods. All are from the bean family and include lentils, soybeans, peanuts (a legume in the same family as peas and lentils), chickpeas and black beans.

People living on the Japanese island of Okinawa might enjoy a dinner of stir-fried green beans, soybeans or mung sprouts. Another meal in Nicoya, Costa Rico typically includes black beans. Known for a high level of anthocyanins, a pigment that gives red, purple, and blue plants their rich coloring, beans help fight free radicals and offer anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and anti-cancer benefits. In fact, anthocyanins offer 10 times the antioxidants of an equivalent serving of oranges.

Nutritionists say beans also boost the immune system by supplying the fiber our microbiomes need. They suggest the local diet of people in blue zones help them avoid many of the same health risks Americans suffer from such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, dementia and cancers.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, we offer residents a lifestyle in which to comfortably and safely age in place with a range of hospitality and care services, luxury amenities and a complement of wellness programs and activities. In addition, our all-day dining service includes meals prepared under the direction of our Executive Chef and made largely from scratch using the freshest ingredients.

Situated at the foot of the Rocky Mountains and convenient to medical facilities and other services, MorningStar at Mountain Shadows offers 45 suites for assisted living in spacious studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floor plans. Additionally, the Reflections Neighborhood has 19 secure suites devoted to specialized dementia care for residents with memory impairment. Contact us or visit our website for more information.

MorningStar of Mountain Shadows’ memory care revolves around comforting and caring for our most tender residents from the onset of the disease to the most advanced stages. Once a resident joins our MorningStar family, we sit down with them and their family to get to know as much as we can about them including their history, vocation, talents, and preferences. From there we create a daily routine designed to stimulate or calm as a situation requires. Residents are also treated to tempting meals consisting of finger foods and family-style dining for a stress-free, companionable dining experience.

As dementia care specialists, our approach and philosophy to memory care is encompassed under the expanse of possibilities we call “Lavender Sky.”  Our program provides us with an insightful and intentional way to support the memory-impaired and their families.  All team members, regardless of their position, receive Lavender Sky training, which includes a deeper understanding of the disease and communication techniques to use with memory-impaired residents.  It also includes training in environmental safety and security as well as holistic solutions to challenging behaviors.  Additionally, our devoted team feels privileged to value, and understands every person deserves to be treated with the utmost respect and dignity.

Pet therapy (also known as animal-assisted therapy) is used for those with Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia as a way to alleviate feelings of boredom, loneliness and helpless. Dr. William Thomas, a Harvard trained geriatrician and author of “The Eden Alternative,” said bringing in children, plants and animals helps to invigorate long-term care by “incorporating companionship, a sense of purpose, variety and spontaneity into the day-to-day experience of aged care residents.”

While studies show therapy dogs and other animals are useful in stimulating social interaction and easing agitation in dementia patients, experts say it should be done with specially trained pets to get the most benefit. Moreover, the animal should be matched to the setting as well as to the person. Pet therapists say dogs are generally the easiest to train as they are comfortable interacting with a variety of people.

The benefits of animal therapy to dementia patients include the unconditional love and acceptance animals freely give out as well as the physical touch from the pet contact. Also, these relationships do not require much in the way of communication skills, which are often difficult for someone with Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers say other benefits of pet therapy include an increase in physical activity and an unexpected improvement in a person’s appetite after a visit from an animal as well as an overall calming effect.

Good Nutrition is Especially Important to the Wellbeing of Seniors

November 18, 2022 by Quinn A in Assisted Living Facility

The government first published nutritional recommendations in 1941, which became known as the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDAs).  At the time, recommendations were more concerned with ensuring the population “as a whole was adequately fed and free from scurvy, rickets and other wartime diseases of malnutrition.”  These early guidelines did not address long-term issues such as heart disease and diabetes.

Since then, we have learned we need to focus on maintaining good nutritional habits well into our senior years to avoid or mitigate our risk for chronic diseases.  One example is type 2 diabetes, which occurs when the body’s muscle, fat and liver cells stop responding well to insulin resulting in consistently high blood sugar.  Doctors say type 2 diabetes can be caused by too much sugar and refined-carbohydrates in our diet, and to lessen our risk, we should maintain a healthy weight and minimize blood-sugar spikes as well as add more fiber to our diet.

Another thing an older adult should be aware of is muscle loss.  Along with resistance training, weightlifting, Pilates, and yoga, nutritionists say to maintain strength we need to include protein in our diet.  Christine Ritchie, director of research for the division of palliative care and geriatric medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, says older adults’ diet should include more protein than when they were younger.  A man in his 50s needs “about 25 to 30 grams at each meal (like a medium chicken breast or burger, a 5-ounce can of tuna mixed with mayo, 2 cups of cooked rice and beans, or a cup of low-fat cottage cheese).”

Government dietary guidelines report that we burn approximately 200 fewer daily calories after age 50, so if you keep eating like you did in your thirties or forties, you will probably gain weight.  Also, as bone loss starts sometime in our early thirties and continues into old age, seniors should consume foods with calcium and vitamin D. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommends 1,200 milligrams a day of calcium for women and 1,000 mg for men.  Additionally, eat fruits and vegetables in a bright range of colors for heart-protecting antioxidants.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, we recognize that good nutrition is especially important to the wellbeing of seniors. Our meals are prepared largely from scratch and feature the freshest ingredients from high-quality producers, locally sourced when possible.  Our beautiful home offers 45 stylish suites for assisted living and another 19 suites devoted to the individualized care of residents with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. Decorate Your Assisted Living Suite to Improve Happiness and Functionality

November 18, 2022 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

We all know that life changes can be fraught with anxiety and fear and moving into assisted living is certainly a major change for many seniors.  However, experts say there are several things families can do to help ease the transition period.

One of those things is to help your loved one make a comfortable home in their new suite.  Julia Bailey, a senior associate and interior design project manager with Denver-based OZ Architecture, explains that, "Moving into assisted living often can feel like a loss of independence and privacy for your loved one, but thoughtful interior design can go a long way toward improving happiness and well-being for the resident, as well as improving overall functionality of the new living space."

Ms. Bailey cautions that you need to remember to let your loved one have a say in how their new home will be decorated including the personal mementos and photos they want to bring with them and which ones they want to display.  Triggering happy memories with sentimental items is a big step toward making their new place a real home.  Also, accent pillows and pictures are an easy way to add a lot of color and attractiveness to their place.

Please keep in mind safety concerns when placing furniture and avoid using area rugs that can become trip hazards or overcrowding a room and not leaving enough space to easily navigate.  Install hand rails where needed and make sure there is easily accessible lighting in the bathrooms and hallways if the person is getting up at night.

Helping your loved one stay organized can improve the home’s safety as well as the aesthetic.  Consider any mobility issues the person may have and make sure frequently used items are within easy reach on a shelf.  Chairs and sofas should be firm and stable.

MorningStar of Wheat Ridge offers residents a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community.  We have 45 private suites for assisted living and another 19 secure memory care suites for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  The stylish floor plans of our spacious suites are well-appointed and all that is missing are your own furnishings and personal items.  Also, you will not need to leave behind your furry friend – yes, we are pet friendly!

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. What Are Your Assisted Living Options?

November 16, 2022 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Assisted Living is a senior living arrangement that lends a helping hand to seniors who may be struggling to complete or maintain everyday activities. Many of the seniors in assisted living communities still have the ability to promote and advocate for their own freedom and independence. Seniors thrive in Assisted Living accommodations that help with a medication regime, coordinating appointments, and offering support with daily activities. Assisted Living also offers 24-hour care in case of emergencies. Within its communities, MorningStar senior living Des Moines offers Assisted Living with support at various levels. Around-the-clock Care Managers are on site and at the ready to ensure your comfort and safety as they meet your expressed (and unexpressed) needs.

If you are considering assisted living in Des Moines for yourself or a family member, take the time to consider what services are needed.

At MorningStar Assisted Living Des Moines, couples can continue to live together in Assisted Living. Couples can live together in their own suites in Assisted Living, surrounded by their own treasured possessions. Alternatively, suites can be shared by friends who simply enjoy one another’s company. This is a great option for seniors who are most comfortable living with someone they know and trust. Living with a trustworthy companion in assisted living helps to keep an eye on one another. A companion can also update care managers and nurses within their senior living facility if routines or completion with activities begin to change. Those closest to us have the ability to pick up on things quicker than others sometimes!
