October 24, 2022 by Quinn A in Dementia Care

Alzheimer’s and other memory loss diseases have been known to impact a person’s sleep and their sleep schedules. An individual with Alzheimer’s or dementia Someone with Alzheimer’s may sleep too much or not enough and may experience waking up many times during the night and being unable to get back to sleep. Our bodies need sleep, and it is certainly frustrating when we can’t seem to fall asleep or stay asleep. Seniors in Alzheimer’s care or struggling with memory loss may experience heightened responses to the lack of sleep or their sleep schedule being off. Anger, frustration, and depression are all things that may impact an individual with dementia not being able to sleep. With dementia or Alzheimer’s, it may be difficult to get individuals to move around as much as they once did but focusing on activities that help seniors move their bodies is a good way to help them feel tired and fall asleep later in the day. Limiting naps and sugary foods or beverages is a good thing to keep in mind, as well. Removing blue light from T.V.s, computers, and cell phones is also shown to improve sleep patterns.

MorningStar developed the philosophy of Lavender Sky. This mantra is a holistic form of dementia and Alzheimer’s care that is dedicated to helping residents affected by memory loss and their families find a place of peace and purpose through a three-tiered ambition to serve the memory-impaired. MorningStar explores a person’s life, history, and preferences to offer personalized care and explore ways to involve and engage family members, knowing our service is as much to them as to the residing senior.

How to Remove the Stigma Around Assisted Living

October 24, 2022 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Many of us joke about “senior moments” when we have lapses in our memory. However, when memory loss and other cognitive functions begin to deteriorate for seniors, it becomes a difficult realm to navigate. Doing daily household tasks and running errands could feel overwhelming for some seniors dealing with memory loss. As we age, things become more difficult, and it is nothing to be ashamed of. Issues arise when seniors do not recognize or refuse to admit the need for help from their loved ones or a senior living community or retirement home. This refusal may often stem from stigma surrounding an adult's need for help or an extra hand.

If you notice yourself or a loved one running behind on bills or food going bad in the fridge, it may be time for an honest discussion about the idea of assisted living options and what next steps should be taken to ensure your loved one’s safety while also maintaining respect. It’s not wrong for seniors to need help and it’s important that they know that. MorningStar Senior Living in Des Moines understands the mental challenges for seniors to accept needing help. Within its communities, MorningStar offers Assisted Living with support at various levels to aid in the activities of daily living. Around-the-clock Care Managers are on site to ensure the comfort and safety of resident’s living in MorningStar’s contemporary and holistic senior living facilities.

The only difference in our senior years is that we may have to open ourselves to a little help once in a while. From that degree of honesty and transparency, we enter into a truer human experience, one in which we can receive and give love. For adult children, spouses, or caregivers, be honest and show respect to your loved one who is in need of help. There should always be mutual trust and compassion when discussing a topic such as Assisted Living.

If you love the sound of built-in companionship, predictable budgeting and the security that comes from residing in an independent living community, MorningStar Senior Living retirement homes in Des Moines, Iowa takes care of the worry and stress of aging, allowing you more time to do the things you love. Try These Great Fall Flavors in Your Next Meal

October 21, 2022 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Through proper diets and healthy choices, food is a healing medicine unlike any other. It is also one of the great joys of living, especially when enjoyed in community. With Fall approaching, our appetites are searching for warm, hearty, and familiar meals. For seniors, it’s important to consume foods high in antioxidants, vitamins, and healthy fats throughout the year. Finding foods that can meet all our needs can be difficult, but these fall foods might just offer you that brilliant and beautiful meal that you’ve been searching for.

Butternut squash is a type of winter squash with pale orange skin and a bright orange interior that is often served in the fall and winter months. It is great in soups, pastas, and roasted on its own with some olive oil. Butternut squash is high in potassium, which can help keep your blood pressure in check. Managing your blood pressure can reduce your risk for stroke and heart disease.

Who doesn’t love pumpkin flavored dishes? Well did you know that pumpkins offer vitamin C, vitamin E, iron, and folate, all of which strengthen your immune system? Pumpkin also helps ease inflammation, which keeps your skin and body calmer and happier. It’s best to consume pumpkin without added sugars or unhealthy fats, but a little moderation is fine. It is the holidays, after all.

At MorningStar Assisted Living Des Moines, our senior living dining experience is inspired by the belief that diet is the centerpiece of personal wellness. Our trained Executive Chefs design seasonal menus that feature the freshest ingredients from high quality producers, locally sourced when possible. Sometimes even from our own garden! It’s great to bring these fresh fall foods to our tables whenever possible.

If you love the sound of built-in companionship, predictable budgeting and the security that comes from residing in an independent living community, MorningStar Senior Living retirement homes in Des Moines, Iowa takes care of the worry and stress of aging, allowing you more time to do the things you love. What Does Assisted Living Offer?

October 19, 2022 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

While assisted living has been around in the U.S. for the last several decades, some people are still confused as to what it means. Senior living communities that offer assisted living provide long-term housing for seniors to safely age in place. As it is not skilled nursing care, assisted living residents are overall active and independent, but may need support with activities of daily living (ADLs), such as bathing, dressing, and using the toilet. As a resident, you get 24/7 care and nutrition, daily meals as well as benefit from a range of wellness programs, the company of fellow residents and staff, and peace of mind knowing help is at hand if needed.

The American Health Care Association and the National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA NCAL) reports assisted living is a fast-growing sector of senior living with over 800,000 Americans currently residing in an assisted living community. Experts say in some cases, depending on the level of services provided, in-home care can actually be more expensive and doesn’t offer all of the services and amenities found in many assisted living communities.

Homes like MorningStar at Mountain Shadows provide residents with much more than supportive care. Our Life Enrichment programs offer physical, intellectual, spiritual or social engagement with creative ways to stay active and productive as we believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless. We act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof.

MorningStar at Mountain Shadows is part of the MorningStar Senior Living Company, whose mission is to “cast a new light on senior living.” We start by creating a true home for our residents, made possible by a dedicated team who understands the highest expression of living is to share their talents, time and energy with others. Would Mom or Dad Benefit from Assisted Living?

October 19, 2022 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Did your elderly parents spend a lot more time alone during COVID-19 and now appear to be having difficulty taking care of themselves or managing their home as they once did? For many families, the last 2+ years have underscored the fact that their elderly loved one is not getting on as well as they did before the pandemic; and may need additional help with the activities of daily living.

We know the decision to move a family member into a senior living community is a big one. Seniors can be resistant to moving, and many hate the idea of leaving their home and everything familiar to them. However, it is an important thing to consider whether your parent’s current living situation is meeting their overall physical and safety needs; and if it doesn’t, it is time to start the conversation about the need for change.

One important thing to look for is if your loved one has had one or more falls over the last several months. The CDC reports every second of every day, an older adult (age 65+) suffers a fall in the U.S.—making falls the leading cause of injury and injury death in this age group. Every year, about three million older adults are treated in an emergency room for injuries suffered in a fall. In addition, does their home have stairs they must use, or do they have a problem getting up from a chair or out of bed. Also, take a good look at mom or dad’s appearance. Are they looking disheveled or is the house looking neglected?

If mom or dad does need help with the ADLs (activities of daily living) and would benefit from more socialization, MorningStar of Wheat Ridge is a trusted senior community.  Our home offers private suites available in a range of configurations and floorplans; and residents receive 24-hour care, access to a full-time licensed nurse, medication management, care plan reviews and other services. Amenities include all-day dining; bistro; fitness room; salon; massage room; chapel/theatre; and fireside patio and porches. In addition, our Reflections Neighborhood offers those suffering from Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia individualized memory care. Contact us or visit our website to learn more about exceptional senior living at MorningStar.

MorningStar Senior Living takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. How Senior Living Communities can Impact a Senior’s Lifespan

October 19, 2022 by Quinn A in Senior Living

It’s no doubt that over exposure to stress has been linked to poor health, wellness, and overall dissatisfaction in life. As we age, stress can add an extra toll onto our bodies and minds. According to the Mather’s Institute, in recent years it has been found that assisted living communities contribute to a senior’s happiness and well-being which has been found to boost life expectancy. Assisted living facilities give senior’s the ability to live in stress free environments while also granting them independence and exploration.

Simply said, it’s time to move to Assisted Living when the transition will ease the stress of either the senior’s life or the family caregiver’s life. Assisted Living is the best choice if your parent or loved one needs more personal care than they can get in the home or in an Independent Living community. These individuals do not yet need 24-hour medical care and supervision but may struggle with caring for household chores or personal errands. If you’re looking for Assisted Living West Des Moines, Iowa, MorningStar at Jordan Creek prides themselves on being the ideal senior community for Des Moines, Iowa because of their commitment to holistic health and wellness of their residents by meeting each individual at their own level of need.

Retirement options are brighter and wider than ever before in history which offers great progress for the overall health of our nation’s seniors. By providing a safe community for seniors to thrive, residents can finally start to relax and rely on their retirement community’s caregivers, instead of worrying about guilt or shame from relying on a spouse, family members, or even themselves. Removing these undue burdens helps to lengthen a senior's life span and elevates personal life satisfaction.

If you love the sound of built-in companionship, predictable budgeting and the security that comes from residing in an independent living community, MorningStar Senior Living retirement homes in Des Moines, Iowa takes care of the worry and stress of aging, allowing you more time to do the things you love. Should You Sell the House Before or After a Move to Assisted Living

October 17, 2022 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

We all know moving has its challenges, but it can be especially difficult when it is prudent for an elderly person to change their living situation. Many times a move to assisted living is triggered by an emergency medical event such as an injury due to a fall or a substantial decline in the person’s health. The senior may not only feel threatened by the change in their health and lifestyle but leaving a home they may have lived in for decades.

Often families are faced with a decision of whether to sell the home before the parent moves or to wait until after they have left and are settled into their new community. Since a person’s home is typically their biggest asset, one thing to consider is if they will need the proceeds from the sale to help finance their new home?

However, experts caution selling an occupied house can be tricky as you want potential buyers to view the home in the best light. It should be free of clutter and personal belongings, which makes keeping it ready for short notice showings difficult.

Selling a home without an occupant allows you to have it showcase ready at all times. If need be, hire a company to come in and stage it. Most importantly, it is a lot easier on mom or dad to not have the added stress of strangers coming in and looking at their beloved home with a critical eye. If proceeds from the home are needed to fund their move, many experts recommend taking out a bridge loan on the money expected from the sale.

At MorningStar of Wheat Ridge, we provide a lifestyle that focuses on wellness, comfort and community. Assisted living residents receive a whole range of services and amenities including meals created by our Executive Chef.  Other services include 24/7 care managers, certified medication care managers, and scheduled health & wellness evaluations. We also provide memory care to those suffering from Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. Please visit our website for more information.

Pricing at MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care at Mountain Shadows

October 17, 2022 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, we regularly have questions about our community from Colorado Springs area seniors and their family members.  FAQs include how our pricing is structured as well as availability.  In assisted living, fees are based on the level of care a resident requires.  For memory care residents, we offer all-inclusive pricing, which means suite rental and care, whatever the level of need, is one price.

To calculate your level of need in assisted living, you and your family will meet with our Wellness Director and go over your medical history and personal preferences to create an individualized care plan.  This sets the basis of your Care Level (we have five) and your monthly fee accounts for the costs and time to provide the needed services.  These can include help with daily personal care activities (grooming, bathing, toileting, etc.) and medical assistance.

If you are concerned the cost of assisted living may be too high for your means, we want to remind you that senior housing can be very cost-effective as there are many things you will no longer pay for out-of-pocket.  This includes the costs of your monthly utilities.  At MorningStar your monthly fee includes cable TV & utilities, laundry facilities, and three daily meals prepared under the direction of our Executive Chef.  In addition, we have scheduled transportation every week for rides to medical appointments as well as transportation to organized activities and cultural events.

Assisted living residents also have access to a full-time licensed nurse and our loving 24-hour care staff.  Our wellness programs and activities engage and support our residents’ mental, physical, spiritual and social connections for a healthier, fuller life.

Many Seniors Are Not Being Screened for Cognitive Decline

October 14, 2022 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Medical experts have found that many older adults are not being screened for cognitive decline during routine physical exams and say it would be a good idea to do so.  While many of us would be shocked to hear devastating news that we have early-stage Alzheimer’s disease, doctors say it is important to identify memory loss issues early as available treatments are more effective early-on.  Moreover, if it is determined you do have some memory loss, there are steps you can take to help slow down or mitigate the risk.

Additionally, if you are wondering if a cognitive test is expensive, Medicare does pay for an annual “wellness visit,” which is supposed to include a quick cognitive assessment to help identify some early warning signs of dementia.  From there your doctor can recommend a more thorough examination.  However, according to an Alzheimer’s Association survey, over half of the respondents said their healthcare provider has never asked about their cognitive health, let alone administered a test.  Less than a third said they had discussed memory and cognitive issues with a doctor.  Joanne Pike, an Alzheimer’s Association chief program officer, says while, “Many older adults say they’ve noticed changes in their mental abilities, “the majority of the time seniors are waiting for the physician to bring it up.”

So, what does a cognitive assessment include?  To start with, your doctor will ask you directly if you have noticed any changes in your memory recently.  If you have a family member with you, the doctor may ask them if they noticed any problems.  You may be asked to take a short test, but often the assessment includes the doctor asking questions regarding your activities, your interests and how well you are functioning at home.  In fact, you may not even realize you are being cognitively assessed.

Along with assisted living, Colorado Springs’ MorningStar at Mountain Shadows provides individualized, specialized care of residents with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.  Our Reflections Neighborhood is staffed by a team of individuals who understand the unique needs of each resident and delivers that care with compassion and thoughtfulness.  Please visit our website or contact us for more information.

Falls are a Serious Issue for Older Adults

October 10, 2022 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

A fall can result in serious injuries especially for the elderly, who make up the majority of cases, and can take a long time to heal.  Many even lead to permanent mobility issues that limit the person’s freedom.  The CDC reports that each year 3 million older adults are treated in the emergency room for a fall injury and over 800,000 patients are hospitalized due to their injuries.

Experts explain there are several reasons why the elderly are more vulnerable to falling and include medical conditions such as Parkinson’s and heart disease, arthritis, osteoporosis, hypoglycemia, diabetes, and blood pressure fluctuations.  In addition, physical disabilities that affect strength and balance, poor eyesight, inner ear problems, and dehydration can also put a person more at risk for a fall.  Common situations that can result in a fall include wet or recently polished floors, poorly lit areas, rugs not properly secured, stairs, and uneven sidewalks.

There are some changes you can make to fall-proof your home such replacing light bulbs in dimly lit hallways or stairways with higher wattage bulbs.  Clean up clutter and make sure each room in your home has a clear, clean path to walk through and install grab bars and handrails where needed.  Use a non-slip mat in the bathtub or shower and do not wear socks or loose, floppy slippers but rather a good walking shoe with support and cushioning.

If a loved one is unsteady on their feet, talk to their doctor about using a walker or cane.  Also, ask if any of their medications can cause dizziness or light-headedness, and if so, is there an alternative.  Doctors say if not, it is even more important to make the appropriate lifestyle changes.

MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, an assisted living and memory care community in Colorado Springs, is designed to accommodate our residents’ limitations.  All of our spacious private suites come with wall-to-wall carpeting, fully handicapped-accessible bathrooms and emergency call systems. Suites are available in a variety of well-designed floor plans and have details reflective of those found throughout our beautifully appointed home.  Please contact us for more information.  Not only is our staff happy to answer any questions but our website provides information on our community as well as our company’s history, vision, and mission.

The Importance of Eating Healthy Proteins

October 07, 2022 by Quinn A in Memory care

Information on what constitutes a healthy diet continues to evolve as researchers discover more and more about the human body and how it reacts to the food we consume and the way it affects the aging process. Not too long ago, medical professionals touted diets low in fat and high in carbohydrates. Now newer studies emphasize the role protein plays in our overall health and the importance of eating healthy proteins.

Experts say the best proteins should contain vitamins and minerals. Cesar Sauza, clinical nutrition manager of health education and wellness at AltaMed Health Services in Los Angeles, explains his "top go-to protein foods sources are fatty fish like salmon, tuna and sardines.” A 3 oz. A serving of tuna steak contains 24 grams of protein and salmon 17 grams of protein. Fatty, cold water fish also contain omega-3s; fatty acids that help maintain eye and brain health as well as heart and circulatory health. Omega-3s DHA and EPA are linked to brain and cardiovascular health.

Another item back on the menu is eggs. Cage-free eggs are a good source of protein (one egg has 6 grams), fairly inexpensive, easy to prepare and provide several essential vitamins and minerals including vitamin A, vitamins B2, B5, B6 and B12, folate, phosphorus and selenium.

Bean and legumes are other easy ways to get your daily dose of protein and are rich in fiber, vitamins and minerals, and antioxidants. They can help you lose weight as they contain a carbohydrate known as “resistant starch," that like fiber, is hard to digest and makes us feel fuller longer.

Other healthy suggestions for protein include low-fat dairy products. Along with the probiotic benefit, Greek yogurt has almost twice the protein as regular yogurt along with calcium and is typically fortified with vitamin D. Nuts and seeds are also loaded with protein, vitamins and minerals. Dieticians say if you eat meat, concentrate on lean meat and avoid processed ones like bacon, ham, deli meats, and hot dogs.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, residents enjoy resort-style amenities, care services, wellness programs and activities. In addition, we are proud of our five-star dining service, which includes healthy meals made largely from scratch using the freshest ingredients. We also make it a priority to use foods that have been recognized by the medical community to support brain health and have a high concentration of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory compounds. For trusted memory care or assisted living Colorado Springs seniors can count on, please contact us or visit our website for more information.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. Looking for Assisted Living in Colorado Springs?

September 21, 2022 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Finding the right assisted living facility for your loved one can be a difficult process. You want to consider safety, comfort, location, and budgetary restraints when searching for the right placement.

There are many assisted living and memory care homes to choose from in the Colorado Springs area. Our research checklist will help you narrow down the choices and find a facility that’s perfect for your loved one.

Assisted Living Research Checklist

Start online by going to the Colorado Department of Human Services. The Aging and Disability resource page provides a wealth of information about support services for older adults in Colorado. Some questions to help you narrow your search for the right assisted living facility include:

  • Where is the community located?

  • Is the location conveniently placed for others to visit?

  • What features does the neighborhood offer or lack?

You may be able to find information about specific communities through the Better Business Bureau. While online, check Yelp reviews or other local review resources to find out what others are saying about each facility.

Phone Research

Once you’ve decided on a handful of potential options, call the community to see if they’re accepting new residents. It may be necessary to get on their waitlist. Don’t let a long waitlist deter you.

Pricing for assisted care varies widely from facility to facility. Ask about pricing, payment options, and arranging a tour. If you found any negative reviews, take a moment to ask for an explanation.

Tour Research

If your loved one has limited mobility, it may be best to “pre-tour” the most promising facilities without them first. Ask a friend or another relative to come with you. Take plenty of notes and photos. Specific things to pay attention to include:

  • Does the neighborhood seem safe, quiet, and friendly?

  • Is the building clean and welcoming inside and out?

  • Is there a safe area where residents can walk around and socialize freely?

  • Are the grounds well taken care of?

  • Are you able to talk to staff members and residents during the tour?

  • Does the facility offer the services your loved one needs, including memory care?

If you feel pressured or that the tour guide is trying to “sell” you, don’t hesitate to cut the tour short and leave. Touring an assisted living center should be a pleasant and informative experience, not a high-pressure sales event.

Meeting a tour guide and staff members who are interested in your questions and enthusiastic about your visit indicates they feel open and proud of the services their facility offers.

Find the Right Assisted Living Community for Your Needs

Whatever your loved one needs at this time, there is an assisted living center in Colorado Springs where they will feel safe, comfortable, respected, and valued.

Watch Out for These Warning Signs You Might Be Developing Alzheimer’s Disease

September 19, 2022 by Quinn A in Assisted Living Facility

Occasional forgetfulness is likely nothing to worry about. However, if memory changes are disrupting your everyday life at any age, it is a warning sign that you should see your doctor.

Symptoms of late-onset Alzheimer’s typically begin to appear in a person’s mid-60s, while symptoms of early-onset Alzheimer’s can start as early as their 30s. Caring for someone with advanced Alzheimer’s disease often requires the help of an assisted living care facility.

What Is Alzheimer’s Disease?

Alzheimer’s disease is a disorder of the brain that can cause language problems, memory loss, and unpredictable, uncharacteristic behavior.

Symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease arise because of complex changes that occur in the brain, including accumulations of amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. These plaques and tangles, along with a loss of connection between brain transmitters, first damage the brain’s memory center and then affect other areas.

Memory problems and mild cognitive impairment can develop in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease. As the brain becomes more damaged, memory problems become more severe.

Other health issues, such as urinary tract infections and the complications of immobility, can also arise. Pneumonia caused by the inability to swallow correctly (aspiration pneumonia) is the leading cause of death for people with Alzheimer’s disease.

Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s Disease

Early diagnosis offers the best chance of managing Alzheimer’s disease, including planning for a future where you might not be able to take care of yourself. Early warning signs to be aware of include:

  • Having trouble solving simple problems, such as following a familiar recipe

  • Losing track of dates and missing commitments due to confusion about time

  • Clumsiness or tripping because of worsening spatial skills

  • Struggling to find familiar words

  • Losing the ability to retrace your steps if you have lost something

  • Withdrawing from friends because you can’t keep up with what’s happening

  • Not being able to follow what’s happening in a television show or sporting event

  • Mood and personality changes, such as being fearful or suspicious

  • Wandering

  • Increased anxiety

  • Inability to recognize familiar people

  • Impulsivity, such as using vulgar language or undressing at inappropriate times

If you or someone you care about is exhibiting these mild to moderate symptoms, talk with a doctor as soon as possible. Making plans with an assisted living memory care facility will be easier if you don’t wait until symptoms become more severe.

How Can Memory Care Help?

Memory care centers are specialized assisted living facilities that cater to the needs of those with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. They provide a safe, structured environment where residents can remain as independent as possible.

Assisted living centers offer a variety of living and care options and are designed to meet a wide range of needs — both now and in the future.

A Senior’s Grocery Habits May Expose Underlying Issues

September 19, 2022 by Quinn A in Memory care

The everyday routine of grocery shopping, cooking, and eating a meal may become difficult with old age. Going to the supermarket may become a chore for seniors as it can become exhausting and overwhelming. Did you know that your elderly loved one’s grocery shopping habits may expose their need for assistance or assisted living? Skipping meals altogether, having spoiled food in the house, or often eating readily available snack foods is a cause for concern and may mean it’s time for increased help in your senior’s life.

Grocery shopping assistance for seniors has increased in recent years. With the help of delivery apps and grocery stores branching out to do their deliveries, many seniors can complete their shopping trips with ease. However, the issue arises when your loved one forgets to order groceries, allows food to spoil regularly, and stops cooking meals for themselves. If you are experiencing concern over your elderly loved ones eating habits, an assisted living facility may be a good place to explore for help.

We understand diets alter as we age. However, your loved one should never be at risk of malnutrition or excessive hunger. Assisted Living is the best choice if your parent or spouse needs more personal care than they can get (or afford) in the home or an Independent Living community but doesn’t yet need 24-hour medical care and supervision. Our Community Relations team has the knowledge and resources to walk you through the qualification criteria of Assisted Living, both financially and medically. A licensed nurse can ascertain the appropriateness of Assisted Living through a medical assessment.

MorningStar Assisted Living and Memory Care at Jordan Creek proudly brings the finest assisted living West Des Moines has to offer with modern retirement homes and assisted living that incorporates resort-style amenities such as providing residents with three daily meals prepared by our Executive Chef and served restaurant-style in our dining room. Vitamins Every Senior Should Take

September 16, 2022 by Quinn A in Alzheimers Care

If you’re asking if you should start taking a dietary supplement or incorporating more foods that are rich in vitamins, the answer is probably yes. Usually, our bodies receive nutrients from the foods we eat. Therefore it is so important to eat healthy, fresh foods that are high in essential vitamins. People aged 55 and up may be in more need of some vitamins and minerals than younger adults do. As always, speak with your doctor or practitioner before changing your dietary routine. Here are some vitamins seniors should consider adding to their diet for optimal health benefits.

Did you know people in the United States consume less than 50 percent of the recommended dose of Vitamin D? Vitamin D is often known to be found in eggs, fatty fish like salmon, yogurt, and certain types of milk. Vitamin D helps the body absorb and retain the minerals that are critical for building bones and keeping them strong. Studies have found vitamin D to reduce cancer cell growth, help infections, and reduce inflammation in the bodies of seniors.

Vitamin B12 is a seriously important vitamin and is often overlooked. This crucial element helps keep your red blood cells and nerves healthy. Some seniors have trouble absorbing B12 which is found naturally in certain foods. Doctors advise that you eat foods like fortified cereals that add this vitamin or take a B12 supplement. Strict vegetarians and vegans are at greater risk of developing vitamin B12 deficiency because popular food sources of vitamin B12 usually come from animals. Talk with your doctor or community director about whether taking a B12 supplement is right for you.
