Brain Games Help You Flex Your Mental Muscles

August 09, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Over the last couple of decades, researchers have found brain-training games may help improve attention levels, logic skills, and memory as well as enhance cognitive function in healthy subjects. Shaheen Lakhan, MD. Ph.D. FAAN, a physician-scientist and clinical development specialist and founding neurology department chair and curricular dean at California University of Science and Medicine writes the following: “The brain is just like a muscle – it thrives on exercise! As a neurologist, I’m thrilled by the incredible potential of brain games to help people flex their mental muscles, activating underused brain circuits to sharpen cognition and skills like focus, speed, and memory.”

Experts say effective brain games include Sudoku and crossword puzzles. With crossword puzzles, cognitive skills used include recollecting past verbal knowledge and memories. Sudoku relies on short-term memory, which is often one the first sign of Alzheimer’s, and requires the player to look ahead to plan out subsequent moves.

Android and iOS offer a number of apps for brain games that are either free, include in-app purchases or require a subscription to open up more games. One game is Elevate that centers on reading, writing, speaking and math; and allows you to customize training on areas you wish to focus on. Another game, Luminosity, was involved in a study that showed people who played the games for “15 minutes a day at least seven days a week for three weeks experienced improved attention and motor speed.”

Care Services at MorningStar’s Community in Colorado Springs

August 07, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Families often wonder how assisted living communities such as MorningStar at Mountain Shadows determine the level of care for residents. We want to reassure you there is no need to worry mom or dad’s needs will not be addressed as our job includes creating and routinely re-evaluating residents’ individualized care plan designed for their wellbeing and safety.

Once you and your family decide MorningStar is the best fit, we invite you to meet with our Wellness Director to come up with a specialized care plan based on five levels of care – basic through level 4. Additionally, monthly fees are determined by the square footage and location of your suite within the building along with the view. We have a choice of studio, one-bedroom or two-bedroom floorplans.

Our care services consider the cost and time of providing each service, such as assistance with dressing and bathing. The result is a highly Individualized Service Plan that offers the right amount of assistance when you need it. Medication management is available with two price points based on the number and type of prescriptions involved. Other various auxiliary services, both medical and non-medical, are priced a la carte.

We believe wellness of mind, body and spirit is a joint effort between our remarkable residents and team members. Between clinical services and our life enrichment programs and activities, we work hard to be a breath of fresh air; and look for creative solutions that offer a higher quality of care at a lower cost to families. Working within the scope of our licensing with the Department of Health, we try to find creative solutions to extend the stay of our residents even as health conditions change.

Along with assisted living, our Reflections Neighborhood provides care to those with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. All team members complete thorough training including our signature program, Lavender Sky, to help residents and their families navigate this challenging journey.  Please contact us or visit our website for more information.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. Activities To Do With a Friend or Family Member With Alzheimer’s Disease

August 05, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

An article in the online publication, Medical News Today, suggests activities that can provide a person with Alzheimer’s disease a sense of normality and to help enrich their life. A study from 2020 reported meaningful activities are important for those with dementia as they can improve both psychological and physical health.

One suggestion of an indoor activity is to sit with the person and look through photo albums of family together. This is an effective way to engage the person and is typically enjoyable. Another relaxing activity can be listening to the person’s favorite music; or if they are more hands-on, do an arts and crafts project. Playing an instrument has much the same calming effect.

Researchers say studies show knitting and crocheting to be calming activities for those with Alzheimer’s. Not only does it help reduce anxiety and depression, but the person gets a sense of accomplishment. Moreover, done within a group setting, it can lessen feelings of loneliness and isolation. Routine things like daily chores can also be comforting and help the person feel like they are a contributing member of the family/group.

Experts say outdoor activities (weather permitting) are important to the person’s overall health and well-being. One area of research for those having dementia includes therapeutic gardening. Data shows gardening can improve a person’s emotional and cognitive state, increase engagement and reduce anxiety.

Other healthy outdoor activities include walking in the park (getting back to nature is good for all of us) and feeding the birds. If the person uses a mobility aid such as a walker or cane, be sure to have them use it. The same goes for wearing good-fitting walking shoes.

The Alzheimer’s Association suggests keeping to a routine each day is helpful; as well as offering other promising ideas worth considering. In addition, they say to remember everyone is different, and if an activity does not seem to be to their liking, try something else. Most importantly activities should be those the person enjoys.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, our Reflections Neighborhood offers compassionate, experienced memory care to those with Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related diseases. Our home is a safe, peaceful place where residents’ independence is encouraged with inviting common areas and clear wayfinding.  In addition, purposeful activities keep residents engaged including physical exercise, music, dance and art designed to stimulate or calm as the situation requires.  Please contact us or visit our website for more information about MorningStar’s memory care or assisted living in Colorado Springs.

The Role of Probiotics and Prebiotics in Gut Health

August 02, 2024 by Quinn A in Senior Living

The last several years have brought probiotics and prebiotics into the spotlight. However, it can be confusing as to what the difference is between the two and the role they play in our bodies. Experts say both are important to our health; probiotics are beneficial bacteria, while prebiotics are food for these bacteria.

In other words, “Probiotics are live bacteria found in certain foods or supplements and can provide numerous health benefits. Prebiotics are substances from types of carbs (mostly fiber) that humans can’t digest. The beneficial bacteria in your gut eat this fiber.”

The Harvard Medical School explains our large intestine has 100 trillion good bacteria essential to our health called microbiome. These good microbes help maintain healthy bowel function. Each person has their own unique microbiome from birth and we add to the good microbes by the food we consume. However, a diet high in sugar and fat can negatively affect gut health by encouraging the growth of bad bacteria, allowing them to grow faster and colonize more easily, without as many helpful bacteria to prevent it from happening.

Research shows certain foods like yogurt and kefirs with live, active cultures are beneficial to adding to our microbiome. Unpasteurized, fermented foods like kombucha, miso, sauerkraut and sour pickles contain healthy microbes but most packaged fermented foods are pasteurized, which destroys the microbes. The best way to get around that is to learn to ferment foods at home.

Experts say while there are many probiotic supplements on the market, it is not easy to find exactly what you need. Most probiotic supplements contain just a few bacterial strains, compared to the many stains naturally found in the gut. “Although there are many claims made by probiotic products, there’s now reliable, evidence-based support that certain probiotics — like Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium (bacteria), and Saccharomyces boulardii (yeast) — are generally safe and helpful in specific conditions.”

This post is intended for informational purposes only.  Please contact your health care provider with any questions or concerns you have regarding your health.

Alzheimer's & Brain Awareness Month

July 26, 2024 by Quinn A in Alzheimers Care

Every year the month of June is the time to promote Alzheimer’s Awareness. The Alzheimer’s Association encourages people to wear purple, the official color of the Alzheimer’s movement, as a way to show support and encourage others to join in the effort to end Alzheimer’s.

There are several ways you can volunteer throughout the year to help raise both awareness as well as funds. This includes making a donation yourself, volunteering at your local chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, and participating and supporting the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. During this summer solstice in June, join in or start your own Longest Day event with fundraising and celebrations to find a cure.

There is still no cure for Alzheimer’s but it is important to let your doctor know if you recognize any signs of Alzheimer’s in yourself or a loved one as early intervention can provide a range of benefits for someone who is diagnosed. These include access to treatments that offer better results when taken in the early stages of the disease. It also gives the person time to plan for their future as well as the opportunity to participate in clinical trials. An early diagnosis lets a person prioritize what is important in their life.

Another good reason to find out what is happening to the person is they can take  advantage of some lifestyle changes that are known to lessen our risk for Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia. Controlling blood pressure, stopping smoking, exercising, and staying mentally and socially active, has all been linked to preserving cognitive function.

At the MorningStar of Littleton senior living community, we are dedicated to promoting quality of life for our assisted living and Alzheimers care residents. In service to the memory-impaired, our MorningStar community is proud to host uplifting celebrations and fundraisers on “The Longest Day” (summer solstice), a designated day of awareness established by the Alzheimer’s Association. Please contact us to learn more about suite selections, luxury amenities and an array of wellness programs and activities at the most trusted senior living Littleton, CO offers.

How Assisted Living Can Prolong a Senior’s Life

July 26, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Seniors who struggle with everyday activities and health concerns can be more predisposed to stress, anxiety, chronic illnesses, and overall unhappiness. All that added stress can impact a senior’s lifespan, too. If you notice an elderly loved one struggling to feed themselves, complete chores, keep up with hygiene routines, or socialize, it may be time to consider options. Assisted Living options in Des Moines, Iowa can offer seniors an enhanced life experience with access to support with daily activities to keep them safe and healthy.

How Living Alone Can Impact Your Loved One

Living alone is not an inherent problem for most seniors. Many can maintain a routine, prepare their own meals, manage their transportation methods, and stay up-to-date with events and relationships without needing someone to check in or drop by. This isn’t the case with every senior, though.

For many reasons, a senior may begin to struggle to care for themselves, especially if they live alone or with a less observant roommate. Health conditions, memory loss, or general aging can make seniors more predisposed to struggling with caring for themselves.

How to Know It’s Time for Assisted Living

Sometimes it can be difficult to tell when it’s time to consider options for your loved one. Assisted Living is designed for seniors who do not need 24/7 supervision or hospitalization, but rather for seniors who need a little extra assistance with day-to-day activities, like planning meals, managing medications, and keeping up with chores and hygiene.

If you’re looking for Assisted Living in Des Moines, Iowa, MorningStar at Jordan Creek prides itself on being the ideal senior community because of their commitment to overall health and wellness. Find Safer Senior Living at MorningStar

July 24, 2024 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Safety is understandably the top priority when it comes to choosing a community for yourself or a loved one. Seniors can easily experience a fall-related injury if the proper precautions are not taken. With nearly 3 million seniors seeking medical treatment each year due to fall injuries, finding a senior living community that pays special attention to preventing fall risks within their buildings and neighborhoods is important.

Reducing Fall Risks in Assisted Living

Senior living communities designed for seniors with assisted living needs should devote extra time and focus on reducing fall risks and potential hazards throughout the community. This means shared communal spaces and hallways are kept clean and free of obstacles that may cause a fall. Senior apartments should also have extra safety advantages that protect seniors and provide them with peace of mind. Seniors at MorningStar Senior Living experience easy accessibility to amenities with the help of ramps, elevators, handrails, and senior-friendly layouts.

MorningStar’s Safety Features

You can now experience the safest assisted living Des Moines has to offer at MorningStar at Jordan Creek. MorningStar’s assisted living communities are designed with fall prevention in mind. Hallways and common spaces are easy to navigate at all times due to the low tolerance for clutter, spills, or large objects being left out in shared walk spaces. 24/7 caregivers, cameras, and active staff members are all in place to minimize falls and other accidents. With this supervision and support, seniors feel safe to explore their community, meet up with friends, and get fresh air.

Simple Things can Improve Our Health

July 24, 2024 by Quinn A in Alzheimers Care

Medical experts from the Harvard School of Medicine explain even small steps can make a positive change in our wellness journey. Many of their recommendations can be done daily without much time or effort.

The first tip is to start the morning with a full body stretch to help improve circulation and wake up the body. Before getting out of bed, flex your lower limbs several times. Then bend your knees and raise your legs. Flex and rotate each foot a couple of times.  From a sitting position, turn your head from side to side a few times and rotate your shoulders. Extend your arms out and rotate your hands.

To maintain your dental health, floss your teeth every day. Experts say the proper way to floss is to wrap the floss around each tooth and slide it up and down a couple of times against the tooth rather than using a sawing motion. Now do the tooth on the other side. Another easy healthy habit to get into is to drink a glass of water when you get up each morning, and then drink one with each meal. Apply a sunscreen of at least an SPF 30 each morning after you wash your face to help prevent skin cancer.

As you can see, staying healthy doesn’t always require a lot of time. A few quick physical tricks include every time you stand up, sit right back down and do it again. Think about your posture and make an effort to put your shoulder back and stand straight. When you brush your teeth, suck in your abdomen and hold for a few seconds. If you have been sitting for a while, take a quick walk around or incorporate a dance step into your movements. Doing a few pushups or squats is also a good way to wake up your body.

Research shows socializing impacts a person’s overall wellness so make a point to get out and spend time with your family and friends. Get in the habit of cultivating new interests or hobbies. Joining things like a book club or cooking class can be both mentally stimulating and socially invigorating.

At MorningStar of Littleton, we provide residents’ a lifestyle to keep them as busy as they like. Along with luxury amenities and well-designed suites, our wellness programs and activities are tailored to a variety of interests. However we believe it is our atmosphere of love that contributes most to health and wellness or our community. Our community offers assisted living and Alzheimers care Littleton CO families can trust.

Common Challenges in Alzheimer’s Care

July 22, 2024 by Quinn A in Alzheimers Care

Caring for a person with Alzheimer’s disease can be a time-consuming job. As the disease is progressive and symptoms worsen over time, the person’s needs also evolve. Things they used to do for themselves may no longer be possible or safe. Moreover experts say like many older adults, a person with Alzheimer’s is likely to experience health changes over time. Therefore it is important he/she continues to get routine checkups with their primary care physician as well as with any specialists they may be seeing.

The National Institute on Aging (NIH) says some of the problems caregivers should look for are signs of fever, or sickness like the flu or pneumonia. They say a fever could be signs of infection, dehydration caused by lack of fluids, heat stroke or even constipation. When taking a person’s temperature, use a digital thermometer rather than a glass one as the person might bite down on the glass and break it. Let their doctor know right away if they do have a fever. To help prevent serious illness from flu or pneumonia, have the person get a yearly flu shot and a pneumonia vaccine after age 65.

Dehydration can occur in people with Alzheimer’s as they may forget to drink fluids throughout the day. Caregivers should look for signs of dry mouth, dizziness and rapid heart rate. Experts say dehydration can even cause hallucinations, however they may be a result of Alzheimer’s.

As the disease progresses, the person will most likely need help brushing their teeth. It is important to look for any sores in the mouth or oblivious signs of dental problems.

NIH cautions caregivers to be on the lookout for signs of pain as the person may not have the ability to tell you. They recommend watching the person’s face for outward signs of pain, or sudden changes in their behavior such as yelling or striking out. If you are not sure what is happening, call their doctor for help.

MorningStar of Littleton’s distinct Reflections Neighborhood offers alzheimers care that families can trust to provide for a loved one with Alzheimer’s or other types of dementia. Our assisted living is designed to provide carefree retirement years with a myriad of hospitality and alzheimers care services, luxury amenities, and signature wellness programs and activities. What Causes Heart Disease and Can You Reverse It?

July 22, 2024 by Quinn A in senior living

Heart disease is a serious condition that many Americans struggle with, especially if they are aged 55 and up. While heart disease can sometimes be unchangeable, there are ways it can be managed or improved through lifestyle changes or medication. Proactive management is crucial in preventing the progression or worsening of heart disease. Senior living communities can also help to manage and prevent heart disease.

What are the Major Causes of Heart Disease?

There can be numerous reasons why someone may develop heart disease, but the following are some of the most popular:

  • High Blood Pressure

  • High Cholesterol

  • Smoking

  • Obesity

  • Diabetes

  • Diet

  • Alcohol Consumption

Typically, these conditions affect the heart and blood vessels, making it difficult for blood to pass throughout the body. Seniors struggling with heart disease, or looking for ways to minimize their risks, should greatly consider an active lifestyle that promotes relaxation and healthy eating.

Reversing Heart Disease

Lifestyle changes, health management, and medical treatments can significantly improve a senior’s heart health. While some effects of heart disease are irreversible, making even small changes can reverse the progression of heart disease.

Adopting a healthier diet, managing diabetes, reducing stress, and seeking out medical procedures if necessary are some of the ways to avoid serious medical complications due to heart disease.

Your Lifestyle Matters

When seniors struggle to care for themselves, their eating routine often becomes impacted first. Seniors who require assisted living could be more predisposed or already experiencing heart disease due to their inability to care for and provide for themselves easily. With an unmatched commitment to the well-being of our assisted living communities, MorningStar Senior Living Des Moines prioritizes heart health and healthy living daily.

Grieving for a Family Member as Alzheimer’s Disease Progresses

July 19, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

The Alzheimer’s Association explains Alzheimer’s is a disease that not only affects the individual but robs family members of their loved one. As the disease progresses, it takes away more and more of the person and the family begins to mourn the loss. While grief has different phases including denial, anger, guilt, sadness and acceptance in no particular order; universally shared by most families is unease about what the future holds and what to expect next.

Hope is a powerful human emotion so denying the disease is a coping mechanism for some as they try to convince themselves their loved one will get better or not reach the level of devastation experienced by many suffering from the disease. Others may refuse to recognize the changed behavior and make excuses for it.

Spouses and significant others may experience anger as they feel abandoned by the person and frustrated at their inability to do anything about it. They may also feel resentment and overwhelmed by caregiving duties but experts say it is important to be honest with yourself. Recognize you need more support and ask for it.

Other feelings of grief include guilt. A person may worry they have not done enough or are not visiting often enough. While unrealistic, spouses may feel guilty they are still able to enjoy life while their wife or husband is no longer able. If a caregiver is not getting enough support, they may even experience thoughts about wishing the person would die or go away. The Alzheimer’s Association says it is important to get the help and support you need and to accept your feelings and remember grief is part of the journey.

At MorningStar of Wheat Ridge, we understand the devastation families feel when they get a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease.  We know the path going forward is unplanned for, and we consider it our privilege – our calling to walk alongside the memory-impaired and their family on their unexpected journey.  MorningStar offers experienced, compassionate care for those in the early onset of Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases right through to the most advanced stages.

The Move to MorningStar of Wheat Ridge

July 17, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

If you are looking for exceptional assisted living, MorningStar of Wheat Ridge may be your answer. Along with beautiful surroundings, we provide an extensive range of amenities, wellness programs, care services and more.

When a loved one needs more care than they can get in their own home, it may be time to start thinking about moving to an assisted living community.  If your family is new to the concept of senior living and all it means, please know that MorningStar will work with you every step of the way to help you make informed decisions, and make the eventual move-in process easier.

To start with, we understand that for your parent or elderly relative, the move is a major lifestyle transition, which is why we approach each move-in with great sensitivity.  One way we do this is to try and nurture a relationship from the start that reinforces the positive aspects of community life and tries to help the person envision the many possibilities of a new adventure.

Once your family puts down a deposit to secure a chosen suite, our “House to Home” plan goes into full swing.  This starts by collecting pertinent information, agreements and permissions inherent to the move-in including a medical assessment and physician’s care plan for each new assisted living and memory care resident.

On a more practical level, we offer packing tips including what items are most important to bring such as furnishings and personal belongings that are most significant emotionally, nostalgically as well as functionally.  We want the resident’s new “home” to bring them comfort and joy, which is why we suggest, if possible, furnishings should be arranged similar to their prior residence.  Keep in mind; it is especially helpful to those with low vision or cognitive impairment.

This is just the start of the on-going support we extend to new residents and their families.  We are ready to answer any questions you may have and direct you to our website for contact information as well as other pertinent details.  MorningStar of Wheat Ridge’s entire team is engaged in finding ways to build a true family, one loving relationship at a time.

MorningStar has considered it a privilege and responsibility to “cast a new light” on senior living, inspired and empowered by our unique mission: to honor, to value, to invest. Our passionate commitment to serving seniors has proudly earned us a reputation for satisfaction that is second to none. Do Mom or Dad Need Help With Daily Activities?

July 15, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Over the summer many adult children spend more time visiting with their parents in person rather than on the phone or over a video call. It is also the time when many families discover mom or dad living on their own isn’t working, and they are not actually doing as well as everyone thought.

Experts say there are some signs to look for when visiting an elderly parent to determine if they need more help in their day-to-day life. One cause for concern can be if they have had an unintended change in their weight. Experts say weight loss is a common sign of a senior not doing well on their own. The same goes if they appear to have had a change in their balance and mobility such as difficulty getting up from a chair or walking up or down stairs, which could result in a higher risk of a fall.

Another component of an older person’s wellbeing includes their emotional state. Do they have opportunities to get out and about and socialize or are they spending a lot of time alone and showing signs of forgetfulness or confusion? Is your formerly neat as a pin mother now living in a home that looks neglected and untidy or is she herself looking ungroomed?

Senior living specialists explain an elderly person’s physical and mental state can decline quickly and often catch families by surprise. If you find yourself in such a situation, it may be time to have a conversation with your parents regarding in-home help or a move to an assisted living community. Homes such as MorningStar at Mountain Shadows offer area seniors a wide array of amenities, care services, wellness programs and activities that help nurture residents’ independence for the best quality of life.

We consider serving seniors to be our calling and gladly help guide families throughout the move-in process and transition to community living. Please visit our website for more information about MorningStar’s assisted living in Colorado Springs.

A Nutritious Diet is Especially Important for Older Adults

July 15, 2024 by Quinn A in Memory care

As people age, many find their appetites have diminished or they suffer from physical or medical conditions that make eating more difficult.  Also, their metabolism slows down so they need fewer calories than before.  Therefore, the nutritional value found in the foods they do consume is more important than ever.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) advise that people over the age of 50 follow the USDA food recommendations, which should help keep older adults feeling more vital, and thus healthier.  They also point out the earlier you start eating a nutrient-rich diet, the more effective it will be later down the road.  Recommendations include a daily diet of fruits, vegetables, grains, protein foods, and dairy.  It also includes eating foods with healthy fats such as olives, nuts, and avocados.

MorningStar of Wheat Ridge is proud to offer our assisted living residents’ daily meals that are full of fresh ingredients from high quality producers, locally sourced when possible.  Our delicious meals are prepared largely from scratch and consider seniors’ dietary restrictions.  We offer a range of choices including low sodium, sugar free, no sugar added, vegetarian and low fat that allows our residents to self-manage.  MorningStar’s food service is overseen by our own Executive Chef, who welcomes resident feedback and often tailors our menus per their suggestions.

Our stylish suites come in a range of floors plans including studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom configurations.  Amenities include a theater, chapel, fitness room, bistro, salon, fireside patio and more. In addition, we offer a range of wellness programs and activities designed to promote a healthy, engaged lifestyle. The Bond Between Children and Grandparents

July 13, 2024 by Quinn A in Senior Living

To recognize the value of the relationship between grandchildren and grandparents, “Grandparents Day” is celebrated on the Sunday after Labor Day. While not a public holiday, President Jimmy Carter signed the proclamation in 1978 stating it should be observed each year.

For kids, having more people involved in their lives other than their parents is a good thing. Many grandparents’ unconditional love brings with it acceptance, patience and unwavering support as they readily recognize the child’s accomplishments and provides a safe, trusted harbor. Several studies validate the love and emotional closeness grandparents provide can make a positive impact on a child’s healthy development. Moreover, as grandparents may be retired, they have more leisure time to spend with the grandkids.

Research also shows that a close, involved relationship is good for grandparents too, and contributes to a healthier, happier and possibly even longer life. Grandparents’ relationship with grandkids can include the role of caregiver, teacher, playmate and cheering squad depending on where they live; and does not come with the responsibilities of being the parent. Grandparents can uniquely provide the child with a sense of their family history, heritage, and identity. They know great stories about the child’s parents and can help pass on family traditions and life stories.

If your child does not have any grandparents, consider adopting an elderly person who does not have grandchildren.  If you don’t know any senior citizens personally, call a senior community in your area and ask if they have activities where your child would be welcome. If you missed last year’s Grandparents Day, put it on the calendar and celebrate it with some of your favorite seniors this year.

Medication and Older Adults

July 10, 2024 by Quinn A in Senior Living

It may surprise you to know according to the Department of Health and Human Services, fifty-five percent of seniors are non-compliant with prescription drug orders and do not take medication as prescribed by their doctors. It is a serious problem as approximately 200,000 older adults are hospitalized annually due to adverse drug reactions.

Medical professionals say there are steps seniors and those who care for an elderly loved one can do to help lessen the problem. To start with, take medications as prescribed including the correct dosage and time, with or without food, and never crush a pill into a powder. Especially if you see multiple doctors, be sure to always bring a list and dosage of all medications you are taking including non-prescription and herbal supplements.

Experts say using the same pharmacy can help reduce drug interactions, and to be sure to read the warnings regarding adverse reactions. Periodically review your prescriptions with your doctors to make sure you are taking the right dosage and still need the medications. To see if any meds you take have a warning for usage in the elderly, check the American Geriatric Society’s Beers Criteria for Potentially Inappropriate Medication Use in Older Adults. It is also recommended you properly dispose of older medications and drugs you no longer take.

If you are on medications to treat diabetes or high blood pressure, you need to continue to test your glucose level and BP numbers. Other drugs may be prescribed with the understanding you will have your blood tested periodically and it is important to follow through as too high or too low of a dosage can cause problems.

The Adjustment to Assisted Living May Take Some Time

July 08, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

No matter how old we are, change can be challenging. For seniors who have had just that much more time to get used to the way things are, a change in the status quo can be difficult. When faced with a change in lifestyle and residence, a person may mourn what they perceive as a loss of their independence and younger self, and the loss of a home filled with a lifetime of memories. However, regardless of how we long to keep things the same, change is a fact of life; and for many seniors, life could be better with a little daily help.

When mom or dad would benefit from the many services offered by an assisted living community, there are a few things families can do to help ease the transition. To start with, senior care specialists recommend making the effort to set up mom or dad’s new suite with familiar, well-loved furnishings and mementos rather than buying all new things.

Another important step toward a smooth transition is to give it time. Experts say it generally takes anywhere from three to six months to adjust to community life, but in some cases, residents settle into it quickly. If your parent is one to make a slow adjustment, remember why the move was necessary in the first place including a real concern for their safety and well-being as well as your need for peace of mind.

Some experts say it may be helpful to limit your visits and phone calls to allow your parent some time to find their own way. Also, if they want to vent about how unhappy they are, give them some space to do so. Validating their feelings can help them work through their fears and uncertainty about the changes they are experiencing.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, our team is experienced in helping new residents feel at home and work with both them and their family to help with the transition. Our beautiful community offers luxury amenities, wellness programs and activities designed to enhance quality of life. Living With Mild Cognitive Impairment

July 05, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) can be a precursor to dementia but does not always progress to dementia. Medical professionals report 10% to 40% of MCI cases go on to become dementia, and a good percentage of those become Alzheimer’s disease. On the positive side, research shows as many as 30-40% of people with MCI get better. As with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia, there are no drugs to treat MCI but doctors say there are steps we can take to mitigate or minimize its effects.

MCI is just as its name suggests. The impairment is mild and does not affect a person’s ability to care for themselves or take away their independence. Steps a person should take to protect their cognitive health include quitting smoking and moderating or eliminating alcohol consumption. If you do have hypertension (high blood pressure), high cholesterol levels or diabetes, it is important to treat these conditions and manage them through medications, diet and healthy lifestyle habits.

Other things you can do to thwart, delay or minimize the effects of MCI are to maintain a healthy weight and exercise, which is good for our brains as well as our bodies. Avoid junk food, highly processed foods and foods high in sodium; and reduce the amount of red meat in your diet. Isolation has also been linked to a higher risk for dementia, so it is important to stay social.

Along with assisted living, MorningStar at Mountain Shadows provides compassionate memory care for those with mild to advanced stages of Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Every aspect of our Reflections Neighborhood is tailored to serve the needs of our special residents from purposeful activities to nutritional, easy-to-eat foods.  Our job is to elevate and celebrate life by trying to connect with and nurture the individual each day, and to ensure they are treated with the utmost respect and dignity they deserve.  Please contact us or visit our website for more information.

Help Stop Fraud by Protecting Your Medicare Number

July 01, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

The National Health Care Anti-Fraud Association estimates last year’s annual Medicare insurance fraud was around $100 billion, and most likely much higher. While one in five beneficiaries say they have encountered potential Medicare fraud, there are precautions you can take to reduce or eliminate fraudulent claims starting with protecting your Medicare and Social Security cards and numbers like you do your credit cards.

Experts say don’t respond to a call, text or email asking you to provide your Medicare Number. They caution you to only show your Medicare card or give out your number to your doctor or people you know who should have it. To determine if you are a victim of fraud, examine your Medicare Summary Notices (MSNs) or claims statements carefully for any discrepancies or additions of services or charges you did not receive. Another common scam is to try to get Medicare beneficiaries to sign up for drug plans that are not approved by Medicare.

If your Medicare card is stolen or you suspect fraud, report it as soon as possible to 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227). It is important to know Medicare will never call to sell you anything or visit you at home. They will only call or contact you in limited situations to ask for personal information. One such person may be the agent who helped you sign up for a particular Medicare program or drug plan. You also may be contacted by Medicare if you left your number to report fraud or inconsistencies with your MSNs.

If you are looking for exceptional memory care or assisted living, Colorado Springs’ MorningStar at Mountain Shadows offers a true home distinguished by comfort, wellness and love. This is made possible through a dedicated team who understand how to provide residents with a quality-of-life other communities simply cannot match.
