The National Council on Aging Offers Tips to Prevent Falls

October 10, 2019 by Quinn A in Senior Living

We have all heard stories or may have had an older relative take a fall that lead to serious injuries, hospitalization, or in the worst case, a fatality.  In fact the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that the fatal fall rate for people 65 years and older jumped 31 percent from 2007 to 2016, making falls the leading cause of injury-related death among people in this age group.  Falls are so common in the elderly that every 11 seconds an older adult is seen in an emergency department for a fall-related injury.

The National Council on Aging (NCOA) says that many falls are preventable and publishes a one-page guide called “Take Control of Your Health: 6 Steps to Prevent a Fall.”  Their first tip is to find a balance and exercise class that is specifically designed to help older adults built strength and improve their balance and flexibility.

NCOA also recommends talking to your doctor about your fall threat.  Ask if any medications you are taking have side effects such as drowsiness, dizziness, confusion, blurred vision, or other issues that could increase your risk for fall.  Moreover be sure to share any recent falls you may have had with your healthcare provider as well as your family.

Fall prevention includes having your vision and hearing tested annually.  If you need stronger glasses, get them and be sure to wear them. The next step is to do a survey of your home both inside and out to ensure you do not have unsafe areas that increase the likelihood of a fall.  Search the Internet for a checklist of things to look for in your home to improve safety. The NCOA suggests enlisting the aid of your family to help you keep your home safe for everyone.

At MorningStar of Wheat Ridge, our beautiful community is designed to accommodate our residents’ limitations.  All of our spacious private suites come with wall-to-wall carpeting, fully handicapped-accessible bathrooms and emergency call systems.  We also provide a 24/7 care staff and a full-time licensed nurse. The unique mission statement of MorningStar of Wheat Ridge, “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities.  Our foundation is built upon honoring God, valuing all seniors, and investing in staff with a felt calling to serve. Dedicated to creating a real home for residents within a beautiful setting, we encourage you to see for yourself the finest assisted living and memory care in the area.

Foods Good for Your Brain & Heart

October 09, 2019 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Superfood is a term for a plant-based food that is nutritionally dense - meaning that it contains a lot of nutrients at higher than normal quantities. Superfoods are believed to be beneficial to wellness for having high concentrations of vitamins and minerals, and properties such as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory.

Studies report turmeric, a seasoning that enhances the flavor of food, may also be beneficial to your heart.  Research suggests turmeric may help to reduce a person’s total cholesterol as well as the levels of bad cholesterol known as LDL (low-density lipoprotein) in the blood.  By reducing the oxidation of LDL, turmeric may help reduce the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

Another benefit of turmeric is it is believed to help calm inflammation in the body as its essential oils and curcumin display a wide spectrum of antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant and other anti-inflammatory properties.  Turmeric may also offer a natural protection against Alzheimer’s disease as curcumin can cross the blood-brain barrier and work toward preventing or slowing the progression of nervous-system related diseases.

Acai berries are another nutrient-dense super food loaded with antioxidants, which may be good for our heart and brain.  High in fat and low in sugar, studies have shown acai may decrease the total LDL cholesterol in animals, and researchers believe it may do the same for humans.  Other studies show the plant compounds in acai may also boost brain function and protect our brains from damage as we age. Current research points to improvement in the memory of rats.

At MorningStar of Wheat Ridge, we specialize in providing residents with holistic assisted living and memory care.  Our entire team and wellness programs are focused on finding ways to stimulate and enhance our residents’ quality of life.  This includes providing meals created with BrainWise foods such as such as acai berries, turmeric, Omega 3 fats, dark chocolate and dark greens.   Visit our website to learn more.

The unique mission statement of MorningStar of Wheat Ridge “to honor, to serve, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living options. We have built a foundation on honoring God, valuing our seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, we offer our residents the best assisted living and memory care in the area.

Assisted Living May Be More Affordable than In-home Care

October 05, 2019 by Quinn A

If you are exploring assisted living, Des Moines area MorningStar at Jordan Creek may be your answer.  While we know the many benefits assisted living and memory care provide to both residents and their families, we also understand many families worry the cost is too high.

This is where a little research of just what is offered at assisted living communities like MorningStar at Jordan Creek can put a different perspective on things.   In fact, many families are surprised to learn that several studies show that assisted living communities are less expensive than comparable in-home care, and may actually provide more services.

If your loved one requires help at least 44 hours a week, experts say a home health care aid will costs an average of $3,813 per month.  Keep in mind this doesn’t include the costs of running a home such as mortgage payments, property taxes, insurance, and utility bills as well as routine home maintenance expenses.  Moreover, piecing together services does not address the modifications that may have to be done to the home to ensure the person can safely move about.

In a 2016 study, researchers reported that the average monthly cost of assisted living was $3,600 for a private room and core services.  While specialized services and other care services can increase this figure, one important benefit essential for our good health and freely provided by an assisted living community is socialization.   Given the large amount of wellness programs and activities at MorningStar at Jordan Creek, we guarantee if you are looking for something to do or someone to do it with at our community, you will find it.

Another often overlooked benefit of assisted living communities like MorningStar is safety including emergency call systems in every resident’s suite and 24/7 care managers.  In fact, our entire community was built from the ground up to accommodate every aspect of our residents’ needs.  Please visit our website for more information.

MorningStar at Jordan Creek proudly provides the very best in senior living with our unique mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.” With a foundation built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve, we create a true home for residents amid a beautiful setting. A Link Between Loss of Smell and Alzheimer’s Disease

October 05, 2019 by Quinn A

A study has revealed a link between a declining sense of smell and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer’s disease.  Researchers found that neurodegeneration associated with Alzheimer’s has a notable effect on the brain circuits that process our sense of smell.

The 2016 study was conducted by the Massachusetts General Hospital and involved a group of 183 participants of which 70 were cognitively normal and 74 tested normal on cognitive tests but were concerned about their cognitive abilities.  Another 29 had MCI and 10 had been diagnosed with possible Alzheimer’s disease.  Those who performed more poorly on the olfactory tests were found more likely to have the variant of the APOE gene, related to an increased risk of Alzheimer’s.  One of the study’s authors, Mark Albers, MD, PhD, assistant professor of neurology at Mass General Institute for Neurodegenerative Disease, states, “There is increasing evidence that the neurodegeneration behind Alzheimer’s disease starts at least 10 years before the onset of memory symptoms.”  Furthermore, he stresses the benefit of an early diagnosis as the individuals can begin appropriate therapeutic treatments.

Dr. Albers continues, “If these results hold up, this sort of inexpensive, noninvasive screening could help us identify the best candidates for novel therapies.”  In addition, identifying the disease early may also be instrumental in helping to develop effective treatments that will delay and slow the progress of the disease.

As one of the top assisted living facilities in Colorado Springs, MorningStar at Mountain Shadows’ residents enjoy a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community.  We offer 45 private assisted living suites and 19 secure studios devoted to the specialized care of those with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.  Please contact us for information on pricing and availability.

The Arts Positively Affect the Quality of Life for Seniors

October 01, 2019 by Quinn A

The arts enrich the lives of the artist as well as the viewer.  While some of us may not feel creative, it is probably just more of a result of not having the opportunity to explore your creative side.  Expressing ourselves in the creative arts has been proven to be beneficial to every age group including the elderly.  As artist Norman Rockwell explains, “The secret to so many artists living so long is that every painting is a new adventure. So, you see, they're always looking ahead to something new and exciting. The secret is not to look back.”

Over the last several decades studies in the “fields of art therapy, music therapy, and other creative modalities confirm that art can affect individuals in positive ways by inducing both psychological and physiological healing.”  The first major study to look at the effects the arts have on our health and illness as we age was done by the George Washington University in Washington, DC.  The national longitudinal study was led by Gene Cohen, MD, PhD, director of the University’s Center on Aging, Health & Humanities, who found the arts positively affect the quality of seniors’ lives.  Some of the benefits included helping seniors relax, reducing depression and anxiety, assisting in socialization, improving cognition, reducing boredom, nurturing spirituality and increasing self-esteem.

Researchers explain that taking part in art expression classes should not be looked at as simply a way to fill time but rather as a way to find meaning and purpose in life regardless of your age.  Moreover it is important that as we grow older, we do things that keep us engaged and give us a reason to look forward to each day. Expressive arts include visual arts, music, dance, writing, and poetry.

MorningStar at Jordan Creek has 56 assisted living suites and 29 secure suites for memory care.  As a resident, you will have a wide array of care services, resort-style amenities and meaningful wellness programs to engage your mental, physical, spiritual and social connections.  If you are looking for the best senior living Des Moines or West Des Moines has to offer, we encourage you to visit our website to learn why our residents are proud to call MorningStar at Jordan Creek “home.”

Are You Worried Your Loved One Living Alone?

September 27, 2019 by Quinn A

Many older adults cling to the idea of living in their own home and stubbornly refuse to accept the fact that their declining medical conditions may be putting their very safety at risk in their present living situation.  This is when family members need to step in and help make some decisions.

In the best scenario, we typically want to make changes in things as important as our living situation with careful thought, but unfortunately, many older adults do not have such plans in place.  This reluctance to plan ahead means lots of families are unaware of today’s various senior living options, which include assisted living, independent living, skilled nursing facilities, family group homes, memory care, and continuing care communities.

As you sort through the best care options for your parent, start by honestly assessing their medical conditions, their mobility, and care requirements.  In addition experts say to try and determine what the future holds for your loved one as you do not want to get them settled into a home and quickly realized it is not equipped to provide the care they now need.

One senior living option is assisted living, which is designed to provide your parent help with their ADLs (activities of daily living) in order to allow them to live as independently as possible.  Most assisted living communities have tiered levels of care, which means as your parent’s needs increase the community will be able to address them.

MorningStar at Jordan Creek is committed to provide the best assisted living Des Moines and the surrounding area has to offer, and we work hard to create a true “home” for our residents.  We define health and well-being holistically and offer services and programming that supports the whole person: body, mind and spirit. A Leading Cause of Death, Heart Disease is Often Misdiagnosed in Women

September 21, 2019 by Quinn A

While coronary heart disease (CHD) is the leading cause of death for women, research suggests it is often overlooked and misdiagnosed in women.  Medical News Today explains that CHD occurs when the arteries delivering oxygenated blood into the heart, which pumps it out to other organs, are unable to ‘service’ the heart effectively.”  Doctors also report women are more at risk for developing non-obstructive CHD, which is a condition that causes the arteries going into the heart to be abnormally squeezed by surrounding tissue.

One reason women are often under diagnosed with CHD is the symptoms are so varied in individuals as well as between men and women.  Non-obstructive CHD can also be symptom-less and go undetected for years.  Moreover the symptoms women do experience are more atypical and can include things like “back pain, burning in the chest, abdominal discomfort, nausea, or fatigue — which makes the diagnosis more difficult,” says one researcher.  Another problem is many women wait to get medical attention, and in some cases, not until the disease has progressed, thus delaying the start of treatment.

Researchers also recognize that most of the CHD studies done in the past have concentrated on men and have under represented women.  Hopefully with this understanding, more women will be included in future research.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, we provide a lifestyle above ordinary assisted living facilities that focuses on wellness, comfort and community.  Our care services include 24/7 Care Managers, Certified Med Care Managers, scheduled Health & Wellness Evaluations,  CPR-trained team members on every shift, Licensed Nurse onsite 5-7 days/week and on call 24/7, and much more.  We also provide a full range of auxiliary care services to deal with other health concerns on an as needed basis.  Please visit our website for more information.

MorningStar at Mountain Shadows epitomizes the very best in senior living with a unique mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.”  Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve as we create a true home for residents at the foot of the majestic Rockies.  We invite you to schedule a visit to discover why we are a step above ordinary assisted living facilities in Colorado Springs.

Help Eradicate a Devastating Disease by Joining a “Walk to End Alzheimer’s”

September 15, 2019 by Quinn A

The Alzheimer’s Association estimates there are 5.8 million Americans of all ages living with Alzheimer's disease. This number includes 5.6 million people age 65 and older with the disease and another 200,000 individuals under age 65 afflicted with younger-onset Alzheimer's.  Experts also predict by the year 2050 the number of Americans with Alzheimer’s will grow to nearly 14 million.  Now when you add the fact that the cost of caring for those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia will be $290 billion in 2019; it is imperative that we all take a step toward finding a cure for this devastating disease.

One way we can do this is to participate in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s®, which is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research.  This year’s Walk will be held in 600 communities nationwide with people of all ages and abilities joining the fight against the disease.

The event dates back to 1989 when nine Alzheimer’s Association chapters held a Memory Walk® with just 1,249 participants and raising $149,000.  From there, the idea quickly took hold and four years later it was a nationwide event raising $4.5 million and held at 167 locations.  The 2018 Walk had 65,000 teams participating and raised over $90 million.

If you or a loved one is having memory problems, learn more about the warning signs of Alzheimer’s.  The Alzheimer’s Association reports that one of the earliest signs is experiencing memory loss to the extent that it disrupts your daily life.  This includes forgetting recently learned information and finding it difficult to organize a plan or to problem solve.  People may also get lost driving to familiar places or remembering things like the rules of a favorite game.

Other signs it may be more than typical age-related memory problems are forgetting how you got somewhere and misplacing things in unusual places such as keys in the refrigerator.  Additionally people may have trouble finding the right words to use, following a conversation, and experience changes in their mood and personality.

To get involved in a Walk, simply visit the Alzheimer’s Association’s website and follow the instructions to find an event in your area.  Most are held throughout September or early October and you can join a team, start your own team, or walk as an individual.  The site also has lots of suggestions on how to raise funds for this great cause!

The unique mission statement of MorningStar at Jordan Creek, “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities. Our foundation is built upon honoring God, valuing all seniors, and investing in staff with a felt calling to serve. Dedicated to creating a real home for residents within a beautiful setting, we encourage you to see for yourself the finest senior living Des Moines and the surrounding area offers.

Seniors Benefit from Regular Physical Exercise

September 15, 2019 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Regardless of your age, you can benefit from regular physical exercise.  Studies show exercise can help prevent heart disease, diabetes, and certain forms of cancer as well as reduce the pain associated with arthritis.  It can also improve balance, flexibility, endurance and strength. Staying active can even improve sleep quality and duration and enhance your mood.

Different forms of exercises offer different benefits but please remember to check with your doctor before beginning any new exercise.  Stretching exercises can improve mobility and flexibility and relieve sore and stiff muscles. They can also help to reduce lower back-pain, improve posture and increase blood flow and energy.

Aerobic exercises can help improve endurance and increase your breathing and heart rate.  Moderate aerobic exercises for seniors include walking briskly, swimming and dancing.  Doctors suggest you start slowly and build up your endurance, and if you have been inactive, start with 5 minutes of cardio a day several times a week and build from there.

In addition experts say it is important for the elderly to routinely do balance exercises as they can help prevent falls.  Most are easy to do and do not require any special equipment.

At MorningStar of Littleton, our mission is to provide the best senior living Littleton has to offer, which includes a wide range of programs and activities as well as nutritional daily meals.  WellStar, our signature wellness program, supports and encourages physical, intellectual, spiritual and social connections.  Visit our website to learn more about our exceptional assisted living and memory care community.

Alternative Treatments for Parkinson’s Disease

September 11, 2019 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Parkinson’s Disease is an incurable neurodegenerative disorder that affects movement and up until recently offered few options in terms of treatment.  Typical treatments included prescription drugs to help alleviate symptoms and/or a special device implanted in patients, used to help control tremors.

However since Parkinson’s affects the whole body, doctors and researchers have been looking at different complementary and alternative methods to treat the many symptoms of the disease.  The U.S. News and World Report published an article describing some of those different methods of treatment.

As Parkinson’s occurs when dopamine-producing cells in the brain stem die off, doctors say exercise is key to managing some of the effects of Parkinson’s.  Dr. Dean Sutherland, a neurologist and Parkinson’s disease specialist in Sarasota, Florida, explains, “Exercise releases dopamine into the same parts of the brain that are stimulated by taking medication. That helps with motor issues like stiffness, tremors and muscle freezing.”

Other activities that appear to help patients with Parkinson’s Disease include massage therapy to help alleviate stiffness and pain; and acupuncture, which helps some people reduce tremors and also relieves stiff muscles and pain.   Physical therapy appears to help patients improve balance and gait as well as flexibility. There are even programs specifically targeted to Parkinson’s patients that focus on teaching them to take bigger steps to avoid common walking problems such as shuffling.

In addition, people with Parkinson’s are discovering that alternative treatments such as singing can help improve voice volume, which in turn, can improve their social interactions.  When you can control the volume of your voice to be heard by others, you are more likely to feel comfortable interacting socially. Another thing proving to be helpful to people with balance problems is aqua therapy.  Parkinson’s patients have found that being in the water gives them the freedom to move about without the fear of falling. And finally as swallowing can become difficult for some people with Parkinson’s, swallowing therapy is also recommended.

At MorningStar of Wheat Ridge, our assisted living community offers a wide range of care services including physical, occupational, respiratory, speech, and massage therapy.  We offer 45 suites for assisted living and 19 suites dedicated to the care of those with Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia.  Please visit our website to learn more.

Common Health Problems for Seniors

September 10, 2019 by Quinn A

Statistics indicate we are living longer, and if you do reach the age of 65, you can expect to live on average another nearly 20 years.  Furthermore, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 41 percent of those over the age of 65 reports they are in very good or excellent health.

Experts recommend that older adults should be aware of chronic health conditions common to seniors and make lifestyle changes that may help stave off those diseases and improve their quality of life.  Some of the things they suggest are to eat a healthy diet, stay physically active, quit smoking and maintain a healthy weight.

If you are already coping with a chronic medical condition, following those suggestions can help you to better manage your disease as well as improve your quality of life.  Experts also recommend if you do not already have a geriatrician on your healthcare team, to add one, as they have a special understanding of the things seniors are going through.

The three most prevalent diseases affecting older adults in order are arthritis, heart disease and cancer.   The CDC estimates arthritis affects almost 50 percent of all adults over the age of 65, and can cause pain and a lower quality of life.  While the disease can “discourage you from being active, it’s important to work with your doctor to develop a personalized activity plan that, along with other treatment, can help maintain senior health.”

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in adults over the age of 65, and an estimated 37 percent of men and 26 percent of women over 65 are afflicted with chronic heart disease.  Doctors say it is important to exercise, eat well, get a good night’s sleep, and maintain a healthy weight in order to stave off heart disease or to better manage it.

Cancer is the next most common disease in seniors and the second leading cause of death in adults over the age of 65.  CDC statistics show 28 percent of men and 21 percent of woman over 65 are living with cancer.  It is a disease that if caught early, is often treatable so be sure to get routine screening such as colonoscopies, mammograms, and skin checks.

The Move to an Assisted Living Community

September 09, 2019 by Quinn A in Senior Living

While we recognize the many benefits of assisted living communities, any change is difficult and moving into assisted living is certainly a big change for most seniors.  This is why experts have tips to help families support their loved one during the transition.

A couple of common problems families encounter are a parent feeling abandoned or frustrated by a perceived loss of independence.  Your loved one may also experience problems adjusting to a new routine. They may resent having to downsize and moving from their own home to a smaller apartment.

Psychologist Dr. Deborah L. Stote explains it will help seniors adjust to their new home if they get encouragement and support from their family during their first days and weeks at the assisted living community.  She says seniors “need positive reassurance that they are moving into a new chapter of their lives, rather than ending the life they have always known.”   However, Dr. Stote cautions families not to do too much “handholding.” Being too protective can be counterproductive and prevent them from trying to make an adjustment to their new home.

While transitioning to assisted living can be difficult for some seniors, others quickly realize the advantage of no longer having to worry about their homes’ upkeep or needing to prepare their own meals.  Their earlier feelings of resentment or sadness turn into feelings of gratitude as they understand their new home is better equipped to help them maintain their independence and can give them the support and care they need.

MorningStar of Wheat Ridge is a beautiful, loving assisted living and memory care community located in a northern suburb of Metro Denver.  Our staff is comprised of individuals who feel it is a privilege to serve and consider seniors to be heroes. Worried that Assisted Living in the Des Moines Area is Too Expensive?

September 05, 2019 by Quinn A

Looking for the best assisted living Des Moines and the surrounding area offers? Worried that assisted living may be too expensive?  At MorningStar at Jordan Creek, we understand the concern but want families to know we can help direct them to often overlooked sources of funding.

However first, we want you to remember that our assisted living community offers a whole new lifestyle.  Monthly fees will include the necessities and much more including a fully equipped private suite, daily meals, and transportation services.  Additionally, each suite includes Cable TV and utilities as well as an emergency call system.  We also supply a full range of meaningful wellness programs and fun activities and entertainment.

One of the sources of income we discuss with potential residents and their families includes the generous “Aid & Attendance” Pension issued by the US Department of Veteran Affairs.  The monthly benefit pays for assisted living to qualified veterans, as well as their surviving spouse.  We will direct you to a local resource that can help ease and quicken the application process for “Aid & Attendance.

We also remind seniors to take a look at their Long-term Care insurance policies.  They can help to protect your personal assets by paying for senior care up to the amounts set forth in the policy.  To determine your LTC policy’s coverage, check the Benefits Summary section for specifics on the type of coverage, daily benefit, policy limits and elimination period.  Keep in mind premiums may be tax deductible, and benefits from tax-qualified plans are non-taxable, which makes this option even more attractive.

Another source of funding to help with assisted living costs can be to leverage your life insurance policies.  Many whole life and universal life policies build a cash reserve through interest-earning excess premiums known as the policy’s “cash value”.

Before taking advantage of any of these funding methods, please consult with a financial advisor.  MorningStar at Jordan Creek’s team is ready to answer questions regarding pricing and availability of our beautiful assisted living and memory care community.

Please contact us to learn more about the finest assisted living Des Moines and the surrounding area has to offer.

Keep Your Body and Brain Fit!

September 05, 2019 by Quinn A

More and more research supports the importance of seniors staying physical fit as well as keeping their brains’ fit.  Harvard Health Publishing reports on research with mice and humans that show “brainy activities stimulate new connections between nerve cells and may even help the brain generate new cells, developing neurological ‘plasticity’ and building up a functional reserve that provides a hedge against future cell loss.”

Mentally stimulating activities such as trivia and memory games, puzzles, crosswords, board and card games can help maintain brain function.  Even if you don’t have a partner to play with, many of these types of games can be found on a computer or tablet.   Reading, taking courses, drawing, painting and experimenting with things that require manual dexterity are stimulating mental gymnastics.  Other great brain boosters include learning or engaging in creative activities like playing an instrument or dancing.

Board games, such as chess and checkers, require counting, strategy and decision-making. Memory games, scrabble and crosswords can help to improve recall and reduce those times when you cannot get the right word out.  Another added benefit to playing games with others is companionship.

Experts say physical activity is also necessary for good brain health as it increases the number of tiny blood vessels that bring oxygen-rich blood to the region of the brain responsible for thought.  It encourages the development of “new nerve cells and increases the connections between brain cells (synapses).”   Another positive side effect of exercise is it also improves your heart health by lowering cholesterol levels and blood pressure, improving blood sugar balance and reducing mental stress.  Brain health is also improved with good nutrition.   Diets rich in fruits, vegetables, fish, nuts, unsaturated oils (olive oil) and plant sources of proteins may help to prevent cognitive impairment and dementia.

MorningStar at Mountain Shadows provides wellness programs, activities and nutritious meals to help residents keep both their bodies and brains fit.  Please visit our website to learn more about our exceptional assisted living and memory care.
