If You’ve Ever Had Chicken Pox, You Can Get Shingles 6/4/2023 0 Comments

May 22, 2023 by Quinn A in Memory care

We have all heard about shingles but many of us are confused as to whether it is contagious and what are the chances we will get it. Experts explain shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which is the same virus that causes chicken pox. Moreover, if you had chickenpox as a child, you are at risk of getting shingles sometime in your life.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports one in three people develop shingles during their lifetime. While this means many will never get shingles, some people get it more than once and others can develop flare-ups periodically throughout their lives. Dr. Michael Urban, a senior lecturer and director of the doctorate of occupational therapy program at the University of New Haven in West Haven, Connecticut, explains flair-ups can be a full range of symptoms or barely noticeable.

Statistics show in recent years younger people are getting shingles but typically the disease occurs in those over 50 years of age and the risk increases the older we get or with various health conditions. People undergoing cancer treatment as well as being ill or under a lot of stress are all at a higher risk for shingles.

Symptoms vary and include feeling like you may have the flu, and/or a red, itchy, painful rash or fluid-filled blisters. Before the rash appears, you may feel an uncomfortable sensation, numbness or tingling, and may be the only symptoms you ever experience. Experts say shingles are not contagious but you can give someone chickenpox if they have never had it; but only if they come in direct contact with the fluid in the blisters such as through a washcloth or bed sheet. To ensure your safety, talk to your doctor about getting a shingles vaccine if you are over the age of 50 or suffer from chronic diseases like renal failure, COPD and diabetes among others.

The Exciting Benefits of Brain Fitness Programs

May 22, 2023 by Quinn A in Memory care

Brain fitness programs are popular Alzheimer’s care therapy in senior living communities. These memory care activities focus on cognitive exercises and puzzles designed to maintain and improve cognitive abilities. These activities may include memory games, puzzles, trivia, and computer-based brain training exercises. Brain fitness programs promote mental agility, enhance memory function, and provide a fun and challenging way to engage seniors. Senior living communities like MorningStar of Littleton incorporate these brain fitness programs for seniors struggling with Alzheimer’s or other memory loss diagnosis.

Brain fitness therapy, also sometimes known as cognitive training, has shown promising benefits for seniors with Alzheimer's disease. This therapy offers a proactive approach to managing Alzheimer's disease by targeting cognitive abilities and providing a range of stimulating activities. It not only enhances cognitive function but also contributes to improved everyday functioning, confidence, social connections, and overall quality of life for seniors with Alzheimer's.

Memory games and puzzles are highly beneficial for seniors with Alzheimer's as they specifically target memory and cognitive abilities. Activities such as crosswords, Sudoku, word searches, and matching games can help stimulate the brain and improve memory recall. These games challenge individuals to focus, concentrate, and engage in problem-solving, which promotes mental agility and cognitive flexibility. Additionally, puzzles and memory games provide a sense of accomplishment when completed, boosting self-esteem and motivation.

Music therapy has shown remarkable benefits for individuals with Alzheimer's disease. Music has a unique ability to evoke emotions and memories, even in those with advanced cognitive decline. Engaging in music-related activities can enhance mood, reduce agitation, and promote cognitive stimulation. Singing songs, playing musical instruments, or listening to familiar tunes can trigger memories and evoke a sense of familiarity and joy. Incorporating rhythmic movements or dance into music sessions adds a physical component, stimulating different areas of the brain. Group music therapy sessions encourage social interaction and provide opportunities for shared experiences, fostering a sense of belonging and connection.

Wandering Is a Big Risk for Those With Dementia

May 17, 2023 by Quinn A in Memory care

The Alzheimer’s Association says that six in 10 people with dementia will wander. The danger with this is someone with Alzheimer’s disease may not remember their name, their address or how to get home. Furthermore, the more agitated the person becomes when they feel lost and disorientated, the less able they may be to tell someone something that could help get them safely back home.

Experts say anyone suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia that is mobile is at risk for wandering. Even if the person is in the early stages of the disease, they may still get disorientated; but thankfully there are strategies to help keep your loved one safe.

It is important to have a plan in place in the event that it should happen to your parents or another loved one. Find out if your area has a “Safe Return Program” and enroll them in it and have them wear a GPS locating device at all times. Also, learn to recognize the warning signs of potential wandering such as: has the person forgotten how to get to familiar places, talks about going home even when they are home, gets confused as to where familiar places in the home are, and acts nervous or anxious in crowded areas.

Tips to help prevent wandering include creating and sticking to a routine, identifying the times when wandering is most likely to occur, and trying to make sure all of the person’s needs are met so they don’t feel the need to go out. In addition, reposition door locks out of the line of sight and make sure car keys are not left out. You can buy a device that sounds an alarm when a door or window is opened; and never leave the person locked in at home or in a car alone.

Along with assisted living, MorningStar of Wheat Ridge offers memory care in a secure environment that allows residents to safely explore their surroundings, including an enclosed patio and courtyard. Balance Exercises Help Seniors Prevent Falls and Maintain Their Independence

May 12, 2023 by Quinn A in Memory care

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s statistics show that more than one in four Americans aged 65 years and older falls each year.  Falls are the leading cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries among older adults, and the number of falls will continue to increase as America’s baby boomers grow older.

While these are worrisome facts, experts say there are some simple exercises seniors can do to help prevent falls and maintain their independence. Remember a common injury caused by an elderly person falling is a hip fracture that can seriously impact their life.

Most balance exercises are easy to learn and can be done anywhere.  The Mayo Clinic explains that while many exercises including walking can help maintain good balance, there are specific exercises targeted at improving a senior’s balance and stability.  They do caution however that if you have severe balance problems or an orthopedic condition, to get your doctor’s okay before starting balance exercises.

Examples of balance exercises include standing on one foot, walking heel to toe, back leg raises, and side leg raises.  To do the standing on one foot exercise, stand behind a sturdy chair; gripping for balance, lift one foot off the floor.  Hold for 10 seconds and then repeat with the opposite leg.  Repeat the exercise several times and increase the repetition as your strength increases.

Walking heel to toe is done by positioning the heel of one foot in front of the toes of the other foot.  Your heel and toes should be touching.  Now select a spot ahead of you and focus on it to help keep you steady as you walk.  Try to step forward for as many as 20 steps.  Be sure to ask your healthcare provider for other balance exercises.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, we promote a healthy engaged lifestyle which includes an onsite fitness room and exercise classes to make it easy for residents to keep moving.  Our various enrichment activities and wellness programs are designed to enhance and support our residents’ physical, mental, spiritual and social connections.  Visit our website to learn more about MorningStar’s assisted living and memory care in Colorado Springs.

This post is for informational purposes only.  Please consult your healthcare provider before starting any exercises.

Get Evaluated for Alzheimer’s Disease if You Suspect a Problem

May 10, 2023 by Quinn A in Memory care

The Alzheimer’s Association recommends that anyone worried about memory loss to make an appointment with their health care provider. While we all know it is scary just thinking about the possibility of having Alzheimer’s or another dementia-related disease, the Alzheimer’s Association has a list of reasons why it is to your advantage to know.

The process for getting a diagnosis starts with a full evaluation with a healthcare provider that includes your medical history and any medications you are taking as well as a series of mental status tests. If the initial evaluation indicates problems, your doctor will recommend further physical and neurological exams, diagnostic tests and brain imaging.

One of the top reasons to be evaluated for Alzheimer’s disease is your symptoms may be from another treatable cause. If it is determined you have Alzheimer’s, experts explain that while there is no cure for the disease, there are treatment options that can lessen the symptoms including memory loss and confusion for a limited time. Also, they say an early diagnosis gives you a better chance of benefiting from treatment.

An early diagnosis also means you may be eligible for clinical trials that could provide some medical benefit. In addition, research suggests that certain lifestyle changes such as “controlling blood pressure, stopping smoking, participating in exercise, and staying mentally and socially active, may help preserve cognitive function.”

Perhaps most importantly you will have more time to plan for your future and to do things now, rather than wait. Planning for the future also helps family members know what your wishes are and prevents future feelings of guilt or arguments over your care. The Alzheimer’s Association adds that an early diagnosis can save your family and the U.S. Government money spent on care.

Along with assisted living, Colorado Springs’ MorningStar at Mountain Shadows providesholistic memory carein our Reflections Neighborhood for those with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. With activities, programs and meal services tailored to our residents’ special needs, we bring a deep understanding of the disease to our care. Have You Been Screened for Cognitive Decline?

April 21, 2023 by Quinn A in Memory care

Medical experts have found that many older adults are not being screened for cognitive decline during routine physical exams and say it would be a good idea to do so. While many of us would be shocked to hear devastating news that we have early-stage Alzheimer’s disease, doctors say it is important to identify memory loss issues early as available treatments are more effective early-on. Moreover, if it is determined you do have some memory loss, there are steps you can take to help slow down or mitigate the risk.

Additionally, if you are wondering if a cognitive test is expensive, Medicare does pay for an annual “wellness visit,” which is supposed to include a quick cognitive assessment to help identify some early warning signs of dementia. From there your doctor can recommend a more thorough examination. However, according to an Alzheimer’s Association survey, over half of the respondents said their healthcare provider has never asked about their cognitive health, let alone administered a test. Less than a third said they had discussed memory and cognitive issues with a doctor. Joanne Pike, an Alzheimer’s Association chief program officer, says while, “Many older adults say they’ve noticed changes in their mental abilities, “the majority of the time seniors are waiting for the physician to bring it up.”

So, what does a cognitive assessment include? To start with, your doctor will ask you directly if you have noticed any changes in your memory recently. If you have a family member with you, the doctor may ask them if they noticed any problems. You may be asked to take a short test, but often the assessment includes the doctor asking questions regarding your activities, your interests and how well you are functioning at home.

Along with assisted living, MorningStar of Wheat Ridge provides individualized, specialized care of residents with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. The Many Benefits of Stretching Exercises

April 12, 2023 by Quinn A in Memory care

If you are a senior who is having difficulty turning your neck to look behind you when driving, having problems getting up from a low chair or difficulty picking something up from the floor, you may find adding stretches to your routine can really improve these types of motions. Stretching exercises also help seniors improve flexibility and balance, both of which lower a person’s risk of falls and injuries. Experts explain stretching gives seniors a better range of movement in their joints, helps improve posture, increases circulation and releases muscle tension and soreness.

The Journal of Gerontology reported on the results of a 12-month stretch and flex program for older adults. It found “participants demonstrated positive changes in areas like physical fitness, self-efficacy, perceived functioning, and well-being. They also experienced a decrease in pain.” Along with the favorable benefits stretching provides, it can be done anywhere and does not require any special equipment. However, before beginning any new exercise routine, be sure to consult with your healthcare provider regarding your fitness level and the type of stretches most appropriate for you.

Another thing to remember is it is important to warm up before stretching. Experts say it can be doing something as simple as a walk around the block. Additionally, they warn not to stretch to the point of pain, only to the point of tension. A stretch can typically be held for 30 seconds, but do not bounce when you stretch.

MorningStar at Mountain Shadows offers seniors a carefree lifestyle to safely age in place with a range of care services, luxury amenities, wellness programs and activities. Our programs include a range of exercise classes to help keep you moving. Located at the foot of the Rockies in Colorado Springs, our community offers 45 stylish assisted living suites consisting of spacious studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floor plans. Social Connections Have a Big Impact on Our Health

April 07, 2023 by Quinn A in Memory care

Most of us know physical exercise is important to healthy aging. It can help us recover from injury, ease chronic pain, fight off depression and boost our energy level; but just as important are social connections. We are social beings and interacting with others has a big impact on our overall health.

The American Public Health Association reports socialization improves mood, cognition, memory recall, and is associated with healthy behaviors, including exercise. The National Institutes of Health reports elderly adults’ social participation reduces loneliness, depression and stress; and a robust social life enhances quality of life, self-efficacy and self-esteem. As socialization keeps the brain sharp it may even decrease the risk of developing dementia or slow down its progression.

Michael Rambarose, President and CEO of the Whitney Center, a Life Care community in Hamden, CT, writes, “Socialization is like the secret ingredient that makes a healthy senior lifestyle come together.” Although he is quick to add its psychological benefits shouldn’t be kept secret. He explains, “We encourage the seniors that we serve and work with to make their social lives a priority. The people and loved ones we share life with can give everything else we do more meaning.”

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, we understand the importance of community and staying engaged. Through wellness programs and activities promoting physical, intellectual, spiritual and social connections; residents can choose how busy they wish to be each day. In addition, we provide senior care and hospitality services along with luxury amenities and a choice of floor plans designed to feel like home. If you are looking for the finest assisted living or memory care in Colorado Springs, MorningStar may be your answer.  Please contact us to learn more about our beautiful community.

This Community Could be the Perfect Home for Your Parent in Need of Memory Care

March 20, 2023 by Quinn A in Memory care

An Alzheimer's or dementia diagnosis can be overwhelming and confusing for seniors and their families. If you are a child of a senior struggling with memory loss and in need of senior memory care in Colorado, you may be wondering what communities align with your values and can offer you and your parents a dependable memory care community. At MorningStar of Littleton, we believe that family involvement is a critical component of memory care for seniors living with Alzheimer's or dementia. Our approach to care is based on building relationships with our residents and their families, which allows us to provide personalized, compassionate care.

At MorningStar of Littleton, we value the relationships we build with our residents and their families. We encourage open communication between our staff and the families of our residents to ensure that we are creating a healthy and happy environment for our seniors in memory care that are struggling with memory loss. With a memory loss diagnosis, we understand that it can be difficult to entrust the care of a loved one to someone else, which is why we are committed to maintaining open lines of communication with our residents' families while their parent or loved one is experiencing this new stage in life.

We understand that every senior is unique and has their own individual needs and preferences. That's why we take the time to get to know our residents and their families, so that we can provide personalized care that meets their specific needs. As part of your parent’s move-in process, our Wellness Director will assess their current health, and review their medical history to ascertain how we can best meet their needs. At that time, we will also learn your preferences as their previous caregiver, as well as normal routines, so as to develop a care plan customized to you, a plan that is regularly re-evaluated to coincide with their changing memory care needs.

Family involvement plays a critical role at MorningStar in order to provide quality memory care to our residents. We understand that the decision to entrust the care of a loved one to someone else can be difficult, which is why we are committed to building relationships with our residents and their families. Our goal is to provide compassionate, personalized care that supports the emotional and physical well-being of our residents and their families.

How Prices are Structured at MorningStar of Wheat Ridge

March 20, 2023 by Quinn A in Memory care

At MorningStar of Wheat Ridge, we regularly have questions about our community from area seniors and their family members.  FAQs include how our pricing is structured as well as availability.  In assisted living, fees are based on the level of care a resident requires.  For memory care residents, we offer all-inclusive pricing, which means suite rental and care, whatever the level of need, is one price.

To calculate your level of need in assisted living, you and your family will meet with our Wellness Director and go over your medical history and personal preferences to create an individualized care plan.  This sets the basis of your Care Level (we have five) and your monthly fee accounts for the costs and time to provide the needed services.  These can include help with daily personal care activities (grooming, bathing, toileting, etc.) and medical assistance.

When a Loved One With Memory Loss Doesn’t Recognize You

March 08, 2023 by Quinn A in Memory care

Apart from having to watch a loved one go through the devastating stages of Alzheimer’s or another dementia disease, the next saddest thing maybe when the person stops recognizing you.   This can bring up all sorts of feelings, of which some while not fair, are there nonetheless.  When we take time to visit a family member (in person or via video call) in a memory care community and they don’t even know who we are, some people wonder why they are making the effort.

However, a long-term caregiver reminds us how we can be certain the person is not reacting to our presence in some way?  Maybe the sound of our voice, or the touch of our hand?   In the same way people in comas have said they heard the voices of loved ones even when they were unable to communicate, perhaps a person in the later stages of Alzheimer’s disease knows we are there for them on some level.  At the very least, in whatever way they can understand, we want them to know they are loved and valued.

Experts suggest a way to help make yourself more recognizable to your parents or spouse.  If you are an adult child, try putting together a photo timeline of you as a small child, an adolescent, a young adult to a current picture.  Spouses can do the same starting with a picture from their early days as a couple to the present.

For anyone having difficulty being around a loved one with Alzheimer’s, it may be helpful to learn all you can about the disease so you understand what is going on.  It will also teach you better ways to more effectively communicate with the person.

Along with assisted living, MorningStar at Mountain Shadows offers specialized care for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Our holistic memory care is individualized for each resident and every aspect of our community is tailored to serve their needs.  As dementia care specialists, we provide support to our residents and their families with an array of services, wellness programs and activities for the best quality of life. Residents receive 24-hour care from a well-trained staff, health monitoring, medication management and access to a full-time nurse. Please contact us or visit our website for more information about trusted memory care at MorningStar.

MorningStar’s Memory Care in Colorado Springs

March 01, 2023 by Quinn A in Memory care

Along with assisted living, Colorado Springs’ MorningStar at Mountain Shadows offers 19 secure suites in a range of floor plans for the comprehensive care of those with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.  Our home is honored to provide individualized, compassionate care for residents from the earliest stages of the disease to the most advanced.

The Reflections Neighborhood is meticulously designed to accommodate the special needs of memory care residents.  As such, it means we can encourage and support independence as much as possible and let residents move freely about their environment including an enclosed courtyard.  In fact, every aspect of our community from the physical design to a range of purposeful activities, food service, security and more offers residents a comfortable, stress-free lifestyle.

MorningStar’s holistic approach to memory care involves treating each of our residents with the respect and dignity they deserve.  Even before a resident joins our community, we meet with them and their family to find out as much as we can about their background and interests as well as personal preferences.  From there, we create an individualized care plan that takes all of this into consideration.

Most importantly we are blessed to have a team of individuals with big hearts who recognize it is a privilege to care for seniors. They enjoy listening to life stories, view family photos and make sure each one feels loved, safe, and respected. All team members, regardless of position, receive training in Radiance, which is much more than a customer service program. It is how we build a culture of consistency, authenticity and genuine concern for the needs of others and guides the way we dispense service – with sincerity, warmth and depth of purpose.

If a parent, spouse or another loved one is suffering from Alzheimer’s or another dementia-related disease, the MorningStar at Mountain Shadows’ team is here to help. MorningStar Memory Care Proudly Offers New Fall Prevention

February 17, 2023 by Quinn A in Memory care

Safety is the number one concern of families when their parent or loved one is residing in a senior living or assisted living community. As a caregiver, it’s easy to worry about the well-being of your family members, especially if they are struggling with Alzheimer’s or other memory loss diseases. Feeling similar to you and your precautions, MorningStar Assisted Living and Memory care has partnered with the group, SafelyYou, a pioneering technology platform that helps prevent falls and injuries in seniors with memory loss, to better provide assurance to residents and their families.

SafelyYou use artificial intelligence, or AI, to detect and prevent falls in seniors with memory loss. This technology uses intelligent cameras that are placed in residents' rooms, upon your discretion of course, to monitor residents’ movements and can alert staff if a fall or other injury occurs. The AI technology also helps team members and caretakers identify potential fall risks before they happen, allowing them to take preventive measures to ensure the safety of their residents.

The partnership between MorningStar and SafelyYou is a game-changer in memory care. By using cutting-edge technology to prevent falls and injuries, MorningStar is able to provide a safer and more secure environment for our residents. The technology not only helps prevent falls but also provides valuable insights into residents' behaviors, which can help staff develop personalized care plans that meet their individual needs.

In addition to our partnership with SafelyYou, MorningStar offers a range of other memory care services and amenities to support the unique needs of our residents. These include personalized care plans, specialized memory care programming, and compassionate staff who are trained in dementia care. MorningStar's memory care services are designed to provide a safe and engaging environment where residents can live their lives to the fullest.

Thanks to technology from SafelyYou, MorningStar’s fall management partner, families and our own clinical team can gain insight into fall detection and prevention for memory care residents. With the family’s permission, Artificial Intelligence-enabled video monitoring makes it possible to understand the cause of falls better.

Are You Considering a Community Setting for a Loved One with Alzheimer's?

February 15, 2023 by Quinn A in Memory care

Are you considering a community setting for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia?  Experts say the first and most important thing to learn about assisted living communities offering memory care is whether they are up to the task of caring for your loved one.  Do services align with their needs and is the home capable of advanced care down the road?  A Place for Mom’s website says by asking the following questions, you should get the answers you need.

Before you begin your search, they suggest taking a few minutes to think about the needs of your loved one.  Do they have a tendency to wander or exhibit aggressive behaviors?  Do they require help with eating and drinking?  Are they mobile or use a wheelchair or walker?  Other information to relay is if they need help toileting, require 24/7 supervision, or care for medical conditions such as diabetes.

Once you establish that a memory care community is equipped to care for your loved one, now ask questions including how experienced is the staff; and do they have any special training.  If so, is it on-going?  Will your loved one have an individualized care plan?  Also, what is the staff-to-resident ratio during the day and at night?

Inquire about safety protocols starting with secured doors, courtyards, and grounds as well as an emergency call system.  Are hallways color-coded making it easier for residents to navigate about more independently?   Is there a nurse on duty, and how extensive are medical services?   Also, ask about the type of memory care activities and treatments available.  After you have learned what you can, experts say the final decision will most likely come down to your peace of mind.

MorningStar at Mountain Shadows’ goal is to provide the highest quality senior living, which includes compassionate memory care for those in the early onset of dementia through to the most advanced stages.  Our holistic approach to care is designed to affirm the value of the person and to find ways to celebrate the smallest successes.  Beginning with dedicated caregivers to activities, programs and meals tailored to our residents’ special needs, we bring a deep understanding of the disease to our care.  Please contact us for more information about our Reflections Neighborhood and the philosophy that guides our care.

MorningStar is guided by a culture rooted in our mission of honoring God, valuing seniors, and investing in our team, which allows us to deliver services with warmth, sincerity and depth of purpose. We have built a reputation for creating homes filled with an atmosphere of love and community. Contact us to learn more about the finest assisted living and memory care in Colorado Springs.
