MorningStar at Mountain Shadows Helps Seniors Live Full Lives

December 05, 2019 by Quinn A

If you or a loved one has started to slow down a bit and needs a little help with day-to-day activities or could benefit from more companionship and socialization, assisted living may be the answer.  Sometimes older adults resist the idea of assisted living as they think they will lose their independence and freedom but this could not be further from the truth.  Making the move to an assisted living community like MorningStar at Mountain Shadows actually improves the quality of life for many seniors.

If you are picturing dark and dreary assisted living facilities like your grandparent’s nursing home years ago, you need to update yourself to today’s modern senior housing available in Colorado Springs.  We suggest visiting MorningStar at Mountain Shadows’ website and follow the link to our Gallery where you will find stunning interior and exterior photos.  Also follow our links to a list of amenities and floor plans.

While at our website, we suggest you take a look at our monthly calendar of wellness activities and special events to get an idea of the daily goings-on.  For example, on a Wednesday in October, assisted living residents could attend Bible study, enjoy lunch out a favorite local restaurant, join a sing-a-long, play table games, socialize at cocktail hour, and all before dinner!  Activities are optional but participating can sure be fun and most likely you will be missed if you do not join in.

MorningStar at Mountain Shadows offers 45 assisted living suites with spacious studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floor plans.  In addition, we have 19 secure suites devoted to the care of seniors with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia-related diseases.  Visit our website to learn more about our exceptional community.

MorningStar at Mountain Shadows epitomizes the very best in senior living with a unique mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.”  Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve as we create a true home for residents at the foot of the majestic Rockies.  We invite you to schedule a visit to discover why we are a step above ordinary assisted living facilities in Colorado Springs.

December 05, 2019 by Quinn A

At MorningStar at Jordan Creek, our mission is to provide the best assisted living Des Moines-West Des Moines offers, which includes compassionate and loving memory care to those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.  Our Reflections Neighborhood has 29 secure suites that provides residents with an atmosphere of safety and well-being and supports the senior’s right to remain as independent as possible.

In the Reflections Neighborhoods we are set up to care for those from the early onset of the disease right through to the most advanced stages.  Our team has been specially trained in our unique, holistic approach to memory care that begins by treating each resident with the utmost respect and compassion. Each day finds our memory care residents participating in a variety of purposeful and recreational activities, including special events and scheduled outings.

We bring a deep understanding of Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia to our care and recognize that the essence of the person still exists – our job is to find ways to connect with that essence regardless of the level of memory loss.  Before a person moves in, we meet with them and their family to learn everything we can about the person’s history including their vocation, talents and interests.  This information helps us to develop a trust with the person and create an individualized care plan.  Our team uses a variety of techniques to calm and awaken memories, support capabilities and affirm the person’s dignity and value including aromatherapy, music and art.

Along with memory care, MorningStar at Jorden Creek has 56 assisted living suites for those who require various levels of support with the activities of daily living.  Please visit our website to learn more.

Have Questions About MorningStar at Mountain Shadows?

November 25, 2019 by Quinn A

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, we understand that looking at assisted living facilities and deciding which community is right for you is a big step for a senior.  This is why we encourage interested families to give us a call to discuss any questions you may have and/or to inquire about availability.  In addition, our website is filled with lots of pertinent information regarding amenities, services, floorplans, enrichment programs and more.

Our website even has a dedicated page for FAQs under our “Family Resources” tab.  Here you will find answers to commonly asked questions such as age requirements (in our assisted living and memory care suites, you must be at least 62 years old).  You will also discover important information on how a resident’s level of care is determined and our pricing structure.

FAQs include practical queries such as, yes, we will help you find a physician if you need one whether it is a primary care doctor or a specialty health care provider like an Occupational Therapist or Physical Therapist. And yes, we do provide transportation to doctor appointments as needed, and our transportation vehicles can accommodate a walker or wheelchair.

You and your family may also want to know about the type of training our staff receives, and we go over that too.   Care Managers complete an orientation program (including a three-day shadow), Radiance culture training, 8-hour dementia training, and ongoing training in specific care needs.  Each of our Medication Managers (QMAPs) is additionally trained in medication administration.

FAQs go over senior housing options such as Companion Living that allows two unrelated adults of the same sex to share a suite, and of course, married couples are welcome!  MorningStar at Mountain Shadows also offers short-term stays based on availability that allows someone to get an idea of whether senior living is right for them.

Please visit our website for contact information, to set up a tour, or to get answers to any other questions.  We look forward to hearing from you.

Many Seniors are Especially Susceptible to Cold

November 21, 2019 by Quinn A

Many seniors are especially susceptible to the cold and end up feeling chilly all winter long.  There are several reasons why cold weather can be hard on the elderly including complications from common diseases and health conditions.

The American Heart Association explains that seniors with cardiovascular conditions can experience increased side effects from the cold as lower temperatures and cold winds reduce body heat and cause blood vessels to constrict.  This makes it more difficult for oxygen to reach the entire body, and someone with heart disease can have difficulty breathing.  Other health conditions common to the elderly include hypothyroidism (a low thyroid gland output), which can cause the sensation of cold feet and hands.  Also a sedentary lifestyle, problems with circulation from diabetes, and losing weight can cause seniors to be more affected by the cold.

The National Institute on Aging (NIA) cautions that if an elderly person becomes very chilled, it can be dangerous and result in a condition known as hypothermia and may happen before a person is aware of the problem.  Even residing in a very cold house may result in a body temperature of 95°F or lower, which “can cause many health problems, such as a heart attack, kidney problems, liver damage, or worse.”

Tips to help the elderly stay warm and regulate their body temperatures include eating a nutrient-rich diet and participating in age-appropriate exercises.  The NIA advises seniors not to try and save money by skimping on heating their homes but to keep the temperature at least 68–70°F.  To cut heating costs, close off unused rooms, shuts blinds and make sure your house if well-insulated.  Also wear layers throughout the day and use a small throw to place over your legs or shoulders if you do feel a chill.  Furthermore, at night, wear long underwear under your pajamas and socks as well as a knit cap if you are still cold.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, we specialize in providing seniors with a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community.  Along with exceptional assisted living, we provide the best memory care Colorado Springs offers.  Please visit our website to learn more.

The A Place for Mom’s website, which is the largest assisted living referral service, offers some tips on what to look for when taking a tour of a senior living community.  One of their suggestions includes “following your nose.”  In other words, does the place smell and look clean and fresh?  Also ask about housekeeping and laundry services and what are the costs?

While you are there, look in at any activities going on in the community.  Do the staff and residents look like they are enjoying themselves (before you visit us, look at MorningStar at Jordan Creek’s monthly calendar online).  Additionally, ask about the level of personal care provided as well as about safety and security procedures.  Do not forget to look at the outdoor spaces.  Finally, A Place for Mom suggests that you think about whether you or your loved one would be happy living there, and in the end, trust your instinct and follow your heart.

The unique mission statement of MorningStar at Jordan Creek, “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities. Making Great Memories that Last a Lifetime!

November 15, 2019 by Quinn A

November ushers in shorter days, colder weather, and the start of the holidays; and many of us spend more time entertaining at home.  Thanksgiving kicks-off the season and is the perfect time to connect with family, friends, and our community.

Since the earliest civilizations, people have given thanks for the annual harvests.  In America the tradition of Thanksgiving began in 1621 in Plymouth Rock with pilgrims giving thanks for their bountiful harvest.  While the majority of us do not live in farming communities any more, Thanksgiving is a widely celebrated holiday in the U.S.  We gather together with loved ones to honor our country and give thanks for our many blessings.   The holiday is a time to celebrate tradition and to create new, lasting memories.

When surveying older adults, researchers found that lasting memories are typically the most meaningful ones such as getting married, the birth of a child, or taking pride in completing a difficult challenge.  They are the kinds of things that inspire us, help us feel awe, and give us happiness.

There are things we can do to help ourselves, our children and loved ones create more positive lasting memories.  Authors Chip Heath and Dan Heath explain that “peak moments are essential to a happy life and that we could take steps to create more of them at work and in our personal lives.”  One suggestion is to take an event and turn it into an extraordinary experience by paying more attention to it such as the first day of school, starting a new job or retiring after a long career.  Even negative memories can be turned around if we make a point to view the episode in a more positive light by recognizing the lessons we learned.  Overall we should learn to celebrate and appreciate the things we do well and take pride in them.

Elevating and building relationships provide the most happiness and an easy way to do this is to vacation together, attend reunions, and share holidays.  Strong bonds are also built during times of struggles such as the unique kinship of soldiers.

Most importantly remember that lasting memories can be made doing little things together like watching the big “game” or helping friends paint a new home.  To feel more a part of your community, volunteer for meaningful projects such as cleaning up local parks, participating in fundraisers, or serving others.  Working together on worthy projects is a great way to build lasting memories with our children or grandchildren as well.

The unique mission statement of MorningStar at Jordan Creek, “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities. Our foundation is built upon honoring God, valuing all seniors, and investing in staff with a felt calling to serve. Dedicated to creating a real home for residents within a beautiful setting, we encourage you to see for yourself the finest senior living Des Moines-West Des Moines area offers.

The Holidays Will Be Here Before You Know It

November 15, 2019 by Quinn A

With the holiday season fast approaching, many of us are stumped as to what to buy for an elderly parent and other senior loved ones.  Experts suggest you keep in mind they most likely they do not need a lot of “things” but would appreciate something that helps to make their lives easier and/or more enjoyable.

In fact, do not limit yourself to the idea that gifts have to be something new.  Many seniors enjoy getting out and taking them to an activity they love such as a sport’s game (maybe a game of their grandchild’s), a play, or concert is quality time spent together.  Another idea is to give them a series of gift certificates for a year’s worth of monthly dinners with you or for things like haircuts, manicures, a spa day with massage, or even ride services.

As many elderly adults get cold easily, a comfy, soft throw blanket makes for a good gift.  Another thoughtful gift especially for someone with Alzheimer’s disease is a customized photo blanket.  They can be ordered through several large retailers and are not too expensive.  If your parent is a music lover, expand their collection with popular songs from their younger days, and if they don’t already have one, buy them a portable boom box that is easy to use.

Another gift idea is to get them a phone or simplified tablet that will let them facetime, enjoy family photos, and browse the Internet.  Gift baskets filled with favorite foods or new soaps and lotions, non-skid soled slippers or compression socks also are appreciated by seniors.  Other ideas include large-print playing cards, puzzles, and adult coloring books with a new set of markers are also fun gifts for seniors.

If you are looking for assisted living facilities in the Colorado Springs, CO area, we encourage you to consider MorningStar at Mountain Shadows.  We are committed to provide our assisted living and memory care residents a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community second to none. Learn More About Fall Prevention

November 14, 2019 by Quinn A

The National Council on Aging (NCOA) states that, “falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries for older Americans. Falls threaten seniors’ safety and independence and generate enormous economic and personal costs.”  They report one in four adults over the age of 65 fall each year and account for more than 2.8 million injuries treated in emergency rooms annually, and result in over 800,000 hospitalizations and more than 27,000 deaths.

However they say falls do not have to be an inevitable result of aging.  Rather with some practical lifestyle adjustments as well as public campaigns on how to reduce the problem from the NCOA and other organizations, the number of yearly falls can be reduced.  The NCOA’s evidence-based Falls Free® National Action Plan was updated in 2015, and includes “goals, strategies and action steps to increase physical mobility, reduce the impact of medications as a falls risk factor, and improve home and environmental safety.”

The National Institute on Aging explains some of the steps seniors can take to help protect themselves from a fall.  The first thing is to stay physically active. Weight-bearing exercises such as walking or climbing stairs improves muscle strength and keeps joints, tendons, and ligaments more flexible.  Another fall-prevention tip is to have your eyes and hearing tested. If you need glasses, wear them, and if you have a hearing aid, wear it.

In addition ask your healthcare provider if your medications have side effects that can make you dizzy or sleepy.   It is also important to get enough sleep and to limit the amount of alcohol you drink as even a small amount can affect your balance.

Stand up slowly, and have your blood pressure checked if you feel dizzy.  If you feel wobbly when walking, use an assistive device such as a cane or walker.  A physical or occupational therapist can help you choose the right device and teach you how to safely use it.

During wet or icy conditions, use extra caution when walking, and always wear non-skid, rubber-soled, low-heeled shoes.  Lace-up shoes give you the ability to adjust the amount of support you need, but do not buy shoes with soles that are too thin or too thick.  Around the house, wear shoes or slippers with non-slip bottoms.

At MorningStar of Wheat Ridge, our goal is to be one of the area’s best assisted living and memory care communities, and the safety and comfort of our residents is our highest priority. Please visit our website for more information, availability and pricing.

The unique mission statement of MorningStar of Wheat Ridge “to honor, to serve, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living options. Signs of Alzheimer’s Disease

November 11, 2019 by Quinn A

Have you recently noticed some signs of memory loss or confusion in a parent or another loved one?  Are you worried it may be the beginning of Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia?  We understand this may be a touchy subject to broach with your loved one, which is why experts recommend you do your homework first and learn about the common signs of the disease.

The Alzheimer’s Association explains that Alzheimer’s disease can cause changes in cognitive abilities, executive function and behavior.  Those afflicted may start having memory problems along with difficulty completing familiar tasks. They may also become confused as to time and place.  Other problems involve a marked change in their judgement and trouble with language skills and abstract thinking. Mood swings or changes in personality can also signal Alzheimer’s.  All of these are common signs that can point to Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia but only a specialist can make a diagnosis. You should ask your loved one’s healthcare provider for a recommendation to a neurologist who will perform tests to eliminate other causes for the behavior.

MorningStar of Wheat Ridge is committed to provide the best senior living in the area, which includes compassionate and loving memory care to those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.  Our Reflections Neighborhood is designed to accommodate the needs of our residents and encourages and supports their independence while keeping them safe. Please contact us for more information about our compassionate, loving community. We look forward to meeting you and your family.

We have built a foundation on honoring God, valuing our seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, we offer our residents the best assisted living and memory care in the area.

A 2017 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that more than 100 million adults in the U.S. are now living with diabetes or prediabetes.  As of 2015, 30.3 million Americans (9.4 percent of the U.S. population) have diabetes and another 84.1 million have prediabetes.  Rates of diabetes increase as people age, and among those 65 years and older, 25 percent have diabetes.

That means more than one-third of U.S. adults have prediabetes, which is a condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not enough to be classified as type 2 diabetes.   The CDC warns that if prediabetes is left untreated and steps are not taken to make healthier lifestyle choices as many as 15 to 30 percent of those people will have type 2 diabetes within five years.  Furthermore, one of their biggest concerns is the fact that the majority of people with prediabetes do not know it.

While diabetes may be a common disease, self-management is a very important aspect of how well someone lives with the disease.  Organizations like the CDC and the American Diabetes Association strongly encourage anyone with the disease to get educated and learn about the latest medical therapies and treatment options.

Your lifestyle can make a difference in managing or reducing the risk of developing type 2 diabetes including adopting healthier eating habits, increasing your physical activity, and maintaining or losing a modest amount of weight.   If you already have diabetes, these changes can help control the severity of the disease.

If you have a family history of type 2 diabetes, are overweight or lead a sedentary lifestyle, you may be at risk for developing diabetes.  The American Diabetes Association warns that many of the symptoms can be mild and go unnoticed but early detection and treatment of the disease is important and can decrease the risk of developing complications.  They recommend discussing any concerns with your doctor.

Communities Specifically Designed to Care for Those with Dementia

November 05, 2019 by Quinn A

If your loved one is suffering from Alzheimer’s or another dementia-related disease, you may be coming to the realization that their needs are more than you can manage on your own and are ready for help.  If that sounds like you, it is now time to start researching the various care options in your area.

One choice is to place your family member in a community specifically designed to serve the needs of those with dementia.  Memory care provides long-term, intensive care that is more specialized and comprehensive than assisted living.  Most are equipped to care for residents at all stages of the disease and include 24-hour supervision.  The communities are secure to   reduce the risks of wandering and many have features such as color-coding to help residents safely navigate through the hallways.

You will also find the best memory care communities provide programs that address the needs of residents such as helping to calm or provide stimulation as needed and can actually offer your loved one a better quality of life.  Communities that provide memory care report they are able to reduce medications and medication side effects as well as increase nutrition and wellness.  They also say residents have fewer falls, injuries, and hospital visits; along with more independence and social interactions. Most importantly, memory care communities cite that as many as three-fourths of their resident’s experience improvement or maintain their level of mental functioning.

MorningStar at Jordan Creek’s mission is to provide the best senior living Des Moines-West Des Moines has to offer, which includes compassionate and loving memory care to those with Alzheimer’s disease or other types of dementia. As dementia care experts, each day our energies are put toward continuing to find ways to celebrate and elevate life.  Please contact us for more information.

Exercising Our Creative Selves Enhances Quality of Life

November 05, 2019 by Quinn A

According to many studies, the creative arts provide older adults with multiple benefits including improving cognitive function.  The Today’s Geriatrics Medicine’s website states that, “Current studies in the fields of art therapy, music therapy, and other creative modalities confirm that art can affect individuals in positive ways by inducing both psychological and physiological healing. We know that, in general, exercising our creative selves enhances quality of life and nurtures overall well-being.”

For many seniors, the creative arts can help relieve boredom, provide an opportunity to learn new skills, re-engage in life, and even help prevent feelings of depression and anxiety.  Experts say the arts also can bolster seniors’ self-esteem, and put them in group settings, which increases socialization and helps to develop interpersonal skills.  Moreover, with so many choices to choose from, a person is sure to find something of interest whether it is painting, drawing, sketching, pottery, music, dancing, weaving, or knitting among others.  Seniors also have the luxury of time to reconnect to an old hobby or passion.

Being creative provides seniors with an outlet to express their feelings.  In addition, research suggests the arts may help seniors who are coping with chronic pain by lessening their feelings of discouragement and depression.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, we strive to provide the best assisted living and memory care Colorado Springs offers, and we understand the value the arts have in helping our residents feel passionate and engaged in life.  In fact, each day our goal is to help residents continue to learn and contribute with activities that enhance health and wellness, stimulate the brain, and encourage connection.  Our community has 45 bright suites for assisted living and includes spacious studios and one-bedroom and two-bedroom floor plans.  We have another 19 secure suites in our Reflections Neighborhood devoted to the individualized care of residents with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.  Please contact us for more information about our exceptional community.

Pet Ownership is Healthy for Seniors

November 01, 2019 by Quinn A

According to research, animals can help older adults lower their blood pressure as well as increase their social interactions and physical activity.  Studies have also found pets help seniors to cope with depression and reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation.  Pets such as dogs and cats are very loyal, loving animals and make great companions for seniors.

In the National Poll on Healthy Aging, sponsored by AARP and the University of Michigan, 2,051 seniors age 50 to 80 were interviewed.  Over half of the participants were pet owners, and of that group, more than 88% reported that pets added to their enjoyment of life.  Moreover 86% of them said their pets made them feel loved. The survey also reported that as many as 80% of the pet owners stated their pets helped them reduce stress.

Experts estimate that up to 40% of seniors feel lonely on a regular basis, which is problematic as loneliness is associated with poor sleep habits, higher stress and more inflammation.  In another study from 2012 by Pain Magazine, it was reported that “therapy dogs provided significant reduction in pain and emotional distress for chronic pain patients.”  The journal, Science, reports that just by looking into the eyes of their dog for at least 5 minutes, pet owners got a boost of the feel-good oxytocin hormone in their brain.

Dr. Jay P. Granat, a New Jersey-based psychotherapist explains some of the benefits of pet ownership for the elderly, saying, “Dogs and cats live very much in the present; they don’t worry about tomorrow, which can be a very scary concept for an older person. An animal embodies that sense of here and now, and it tends to rub off on people.”

What sets MorningStar at Jordan Creek apart from other assisted living Des Moines or West Des Moines offers?  We provide a true “home” for our residents.  Our loving, around-the-clock care encompasses the physical, mental, spiritual and social wellbeing of our residents.  We also recognize the relationship that exists between a senior and their pet, which is why our community is pet friendly.

Please see our website for more information regarding our pet policy and to learn about our various amenities, services, and support we offer to our residents and their families.

MorningStar at Jordan Creek proudly provides the very best in senior living with our unique mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.” With a foundation built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve, we create a true home for residents amid a beautiful setting.
