Questions to Ask Your Doctor? Prepare Before You Go

March 22, 2019 by Quinn A in Senior Living

How many of us have just left a doctor’s office when we realized we forgot to ask several relevant questions we had been thinking about.  This is why physicians suggest we take the time to prepare for each of our doctor appointments to ensure the best health outcome.

Keep in mind the estimated time spent with the doctor is only about 7 minutes, so you need to be ready to communicate your concerns.  One of the first things to do to save time is create an updated list of all of the medications you are currently taking regardless of which healthcare provider prescribed it.  You can even bring the bottles with you so there are no questions about dosage.  Remember to include any over-the-counter drugs you take.

Next, prepare a list of questions you have starting with the most important ones first.  The National Institute on Aging (NIA) recommends questions such as, “Do you have a new symptom you want to ask the doctor about? Do you want to get a flu shot? Are you concerned about how a treatment is affecting your daily life?”  If you recently had lab or blood tests done, be sure to ask about the results.

As many older adults worry they will forget the answers to their questions or treatment information, it may be helpful to bring along another pair of ears.  If you are having trouble following instructions regarding your care plan, ask to have the instructions repeated.

If you suspect a medication you are taking is giving you problems, be sure to bring it up with your doctor.  If you are prescribed new medications, do not wait until your next appointment to let your healthcare provider know if you are experiencing side effects.

If you or a loved one is looking for one of the top Colorado Springs’ assisted living or memory care facilities, we invite you to take a look at MorningStar at Mountain Shadows.  We have 45 graciously appointed assisted living suites and 19 secure suites devoted to the individualized care of those with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.

Assisted Living Offers Help with Daily Care Activities

March 22, 2019 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Many people mistakenly assume that “assisted living” is just another term for nursing homes.  In fact, nursing homes are intended for people that require long-term, around-the-clock medical care and supervision and should not be confused with assisted living, which provides residents support for daily care activities.  At an assisted living community, you will receive the care you need to live comfortably and safely while still retaining your privacy and as much independence as possible.

Assisted living is ideal for anyone who does not require 24-hour skilled medical care but rather just needs more personal care than they can get at home or at an independent living retirement community.  Meals and transportation are provided, and if needed, residents can get help with activities such as showering dressing, and etc.  For the family, they rest easy knowing that a trained, caring staff is available to help whenever a loved one needs it.

Many assisted living communities offer the privacy of individual suites, while also providing their residents with the security and safety of 24-hour support and quick access to care.  In addition communities generally provide residents the opportunity to participate in social and recreation activities along with wellness programs.  Residents usually eat their meals in a communal dining room and have housekeeping and laundry services available.

Looking for assisted living Des Moines area families trust and residents are proud to call “home?” MorningStar at Jordan Creek provides the finest care for assisted living and memory care in the area.  Our community offers 56 bright suites for assisted living with spacious studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floor plans along with 29 secure suites devoted to the specialized care of residents with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. Please contact us to schedule a tour of our exceptional community.

MorningStar at Jordan Creek proudly provides the very best in senior living with our unique mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.” With a foundation built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve, we create a true home for residents amid a beautiful setting. Protect Your Eyes as You Age

March 21, 2019 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Eye problems are a common complaint among the elderly.  The American Optometric Association advises that older adults need to be aware of the warning signs of age-related eye health problems as they can cause loss of vision.  Also since some eye diseases have no early symptoms, they recommend annual eye examinations for everyone over age 60.  It is important to remember that while many eye conditions are easily treated, diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure can lead to serious eye problems.

One almost universal vision change experienced by older adults is Presbyopia, which is the gradual, age-related loss of the eyes' ability to focus clearly on nearby objects.   Typically the condition is not treated with any intervention other than a pair of reading glasses.

Floaters are another problem seniors experience and appear as tiny specks or spots that seem to float across your field of vision.  The Mayo Clinic says that most eye floaters are caused by “age-related changes that occur as the jelly-like substance (vitreous) inside your eyes becomes more liquid. Microscopic fibers within the vitreous tend to clump and can cast tiny shadows on your retina, which appear to you as floaters.”  It is important to have the condition checked by an eye doctor as it can also be a sign of more serious eye problems including retinal detachment.

Dry eyes are also common in seniors and can cause itching, burning and even loss of vision.  Treatment includes nutritional supplements, medications to reduce inflammation, or eye drops that simulate real tears.  On the other side some older adults can have too many tears that may result from temperature changes or sensitivity to light.  Taking precautions such as wearing sunglasses can help but you should be checked by your doctor as it could signal an infection or blocked tear duct.

In addition cataracts and glaucoma are frequent problems affecting older adults.  In the case of cataracts, once they begin to affect your eyesight they can usually be removed by surgery.  Glaucoma is not curable but it is treatable, and without treatment, it can eventually lead to permanent blindness.

This post is intended for informational purposes only.  Please contact your health care provider with any questions or concerns you have regarding your health.

The unique mission statement of MorningStar at Jordan Creek, “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities.  Our foundation is built upon honoring God, valuing all seniors, and investing in staff with a felt calling to serve.  Dedicated to creating a real home for residents within a beautiful setting, we encourage you to learn more about the finest senior living Des Moines and the surrounding area offers.

Congestive Heart Failure

March 20, 2019 by Quinn A in Senior Living

While congestive heart failure can affect people of any age, 80 percent of the cases occur in elderly people and is the leading cause of hospitalization for people age 65 years and older. The Mayo Clinic defines congestive heart failure (or heart failure) as a disease that occurs when the heart muscle does not pump blood as well as it should, and it can be chronic or come on suddenly.  The disease can be caused by several conditions including coronary artery disease (the narrowing of arteries in the heart) or high blood pressure, which gradually damages and weakens the heart.  It can also cause the heart to become too stiff to fill and pump efficiently.

While doctors says not all conditions that lead to heart failure are reversible, there are many treatments and lifestyle changes that can improve the signs and symptoms of the disease.  Lifestyle changes include incorporating exercise into your routine as well as managing stress and reducing sodium in your diet.  Respiratory disease and obesity can also contribute to or exacerbate heart failure.

Common symptoms of congestive heart failure can include: shortness of breath (dyspnea) when you exert yourself or lie down; fatigue and weakness; swelling (edema) in your legs, ankles and feet; and a rapid or irregular heartbeat.  A person may also experience a persistent cough or wheezing with white or pink blood-tinged phlegm, and an increased need to urinate at night, a lack of appetite and nausea, among others.

As one of the top Colorado Springs’ assisted living facilities, MorningStar at Mountain Shadows offers 45 stylish, assisted living suites.   Each resident has access to 24-hour Care Managers; a CPR-trained team member on every shift, full-time Licensed Nurses, Certified Medication Care Managers and other wellness services.  Visit our website to learn more about our compassionate, professional care and ask about our special offer of up to “$20,000 Savings” over a 2-year stay (available for a limited time only).

The result: heart rate, blood pressure and stress levels immediately drop.”

Researchers found that interactions between pets and their owners can help to fight off depression and lower cholesterol levels.  There is even some evidence to suggest the relationship may help to protect against heart disease and stroke.  Scientists’ reason that pets may help the elderly to feel more connected to the here and now as the pet requires daily attention and care.  Furthermore, the animals themselves offer unconditional love, unending affection and emotional support.

Pet therapy programs are growing in popularity and used in settings such as hospitals, mental health centers, convalescent homes and child centers.  Studies show that many people who participate in pet therapy programs have an improvement in their appetite as well as improvement in their social interactions and cognitive skills.  In addition the acceptance and non-verbal communication of animals can be soothing for those with Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia.

Learn More about MorningStar of Wheat Ridge’s Memory Care

March 16, 2019 by Quinn A in Senior Living

MorningStar of Wheat Ridge’s philosophy and approach to memory care includes our guiding principle that: whatever the extent of the memory loss, whatever the form of dementia, a person’s essence remains. We feel it our calling as well as our privilege to find ways to connect with and nurture that essence.

Our individualized care starts by meeting with the senior and their family members to learn all we can about the person’s background including their vocation, talents and preferences. Taking this information, we put together a daily routine that will be used to stimulate or calm the resident in response to their mood or the surrounding circumstances. Throughout the senior’s stay with us, we also engage the family members as we know our services are as much for them as for the residing senior.

MorningStar’s memory care provides an atmosphere of safety and well-being, while at the same time, encourages and supports choice and independence whenever possible. Our residents participate in daily recreational and purposeful activities that include life skills, art, music, and exercise and are included in special events and scheduled outings.

The Reflections Neighborhood is designed to permit residents the freedom to move about in spacious surroundings and includes an enclosed patio and courtyard that is reserved just for their use. Our extensive services include around-the-clock care, daily health monitoring, a licensed nurse and a caring and devoted staff.

MorningStar is honored to partner with the Alzheimer’s Association in every market we serve. Our team members work to support their local chapter by donating their time, talent and treasure. In addition, we participate in their core initiatives such as Memories in the Making, The Longest Day and Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Physical Exercise Provides Benefits to All Ages

March 15, 2019 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Too many seniors feel it is a waste of time to start exercising as it won’t do them any good and may actually harm them or that they cannot do it due to physical limitations. In fact, the U.S. National Library of Medicine recently published a report that found about 67 percent of older adults are sedentary for at least 8.5 hours each day, which strongly suggests a need to improve activity levels for senior health. Experts explain there are many unexpected benefits that can be gained from regular physical exercise regardless of your age or fitness level.

One benefit as reported by the National Council for Medicine is it is one of the “most crucial options for arthritis management.” In addition to lubricating the joints, it helps to reduce the pain and stiffness associated with arthritis. Regular exercise can also help seniors lose weight. This is important as obesity is a risk factor for arthritis as well as type II diabetes and other medical conditions.

Other studies seem to suggest exercise may lessen your chance of getting cancer including data that found women who perform moderate to regular exercise may “have shown a 30 to 40 percent reduction in breast cancer risk.” Another recent study indicates exercise may also slow the effects of dementia. It reported a “37 percent reduced risk and a 66 percent reduction in risk of dementia when older adults performed moderate-intensity exercise suggesting every adult ought to exercise to help lower the risk of mental decline and to help prevent mental disability later in life.”

MorningStar of Littleton also recognizes the importance of older adults living a healthy lifestyle. Our goal is to provide the best senior living Littleton has to offer, which includes an array of services and wellness programs along with healthy daily meals that are designed to ensure our residents’ comfort and wellbeing. Assisted Living is Often More Affordable than Living Alone

March 10, 2019 by Quinn A in Senior Living

As families try to figure out how make sure their parent or another elderly relative gets the proper care, many shy away from the option of assisted living as they think it is too expensive. However, the opposite may be true. Assisted living can actually be less expensive than the cost of trying to cobble together the care your parent needs.

For instance, if your parent lives alone, their cost-of-living includes yearly taxes as well as a mortgage or rental payment and expenses incurred with routine maintenance and repairs. They are also responsible for utility bills that continue to rise each year while their income may not.

Your parent may also be paying for in-home care that cannot only be costly but may not be entirely adequate to ensure their safety 24/7. Furthermore, if the home requires modifications to accommodate their limited mobility, these changes are typically expensive. Also, the modifications may result in a lower selling price once you do sell the home.

If your parent lives by themselves, they may be lonely and feel isolated especially if they no longer drive. The website, aPlaceforMom.com, states that, “seniors who live alone often experience social isolation and poor nutrition which contributes to cognitive decline, health problems, depression and a lower quality of life.” They may additionally require assistance to get to doctor appointments, to run errands or buy groceries, prepare meals, etc.

Many folks who tour an assisted living community initially experience sticker shock when they learn the cost of assisted living, but according to the experts, it actually is a great value. The aPlaceforMom has a chart that shows once you add up all of the services and amenities included in the cost; it may actually be less than half the cost of getting care for your elderly parent at home.

If you are looking for the best senior living Littleton offers, we encourage you to visit our website to learn more about MorningStar of Littleton. Our exceptional assisted living and memory care community offers a true home with a lifestyle of comfort and wellness along with resort-style amenities.
