Would a Loved One’s Quality of Life be Improved with More Care?

January 11, 2023 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Most seniors wish to maintain their independence as long as possible by living on their own; and this is why many who encounter problems in their day-to-day lives are reluctant to tell their families. The problem with this is as a senior starts to have more difficulty caring for themselves, their quality of life can be greatly diminished.

Even if mom or dad seem to be doing well on their own, experts say a rapid decline in their health from an accident or illness can catch families by surprise and make living on their own dangerous. In addition, many health conditions affect musculoskeletal, neurological, circulatory or sensory systems and impact a senior’s ability to perform the activities of daily living (ADLs). Experts say other factors indicating a need for more help include social isolation, medication side effects and the physical characteristics of the person’s home such as a second floor bedroom. If after implementing a series of home modifications is not adequate, more measures need to be taken to keep your loved one safe.

Experts explain unmet ADLs can lead to serious health problems including “malnutrition, poor personal hygiene, isolation, illnesses like urinary tract infections (UTIs) and falls. In fact, studies show ADL disabilities are associated with an increased risk for mortality; and taking care of daily needs can help prevent new and worsening health problems.” They also report if family members notice a decline in a loved one’s overall health, taking steps now can improve their safety and forestall further problems. One solution is to make a move to an assisted living community, where a person can live as safely and as independently as possible. To ensure needs are met, homes use the ADLs as a measure of a person’s functional performance.

MorningStar at Mountain Shadows was designed to provide carefree retirement years. From healthy daily meals to wellness programs and activities, we have a whole range of services and amenities to ensure residents comfort and wellbeing.  Our care services include care managers, access to licensed nurses, and medication care managers.  If you are looking for the best assisted living Colorado Springs offers, we encourage you to consider MorningStar.

MorningStar Offers Luxury Assisted Living in Colorado Springs

January 04, 2023 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Today’s assisted living is not just another term for a nursing home, which is intended for people who require skilled, around-the-clock medical care and supervision. Rather assisted living, the most popular and fastest growing long-term care option for older adults in the U.S., is designed for seniors who cannot get the help they need or afford while living at home or in an independent living community. The first community in the U.S. opened in the late 1980s. The concept quickly took hold out of consumers’ distaste for nursing homes and the desire for something offering the services, safety and amenities seniors required while still supporting and encouraging their independence.

Assisted living recognizes seniors as productive, contributing individuals who deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. Moreover, unlike nursing homes, assisted living communities offer private suites and most are equipped with kitchenettes. At communities such as MorningStar at Mountain Shadows in Colorado Springs, meals and transportation are provided, and residents can get help with activities of daily living including bathing, grooming, dressing, transferring, toileting, etc.  Residents feel comforted having the security and safety of 24-hour support, and families rest easy knowing that a trained, caring staff is available to help whenever their loved one needs it.

Residents of MorningStar appreciate the ease of built-in social connections and predictable budgeting as well as activities designed to engage them physically, mentally, spiritually and socially. Amenities include a bistro, theater, fitness room, library, salon and much more. Throughout our community, you will find inviting areas to sit and have a chat with friends or family or the perfect spot to find some solitude and just enjoy the day.

If you think you or a loved one would benefit from an assisted living environment, MorningStar at Mountain Shadows may be the place for you.  If you would like to see if we are a good fit, we offer short-term stays (from one week up to a full month) and respite care for those recovering from an illness or surgical procedure. Please contact us to learn more about our amenities, care services, availability and pricing.

MorningStar at Mountain Shadows’ mission statement of “to honor, to value, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living communities. We have built a foundation on honoring God, valuing our seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, we provide outstanding assisted living and memory care.

December 19, 2022 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

If you are looking for exceptional senior living, MorningStar of Wheat Ridge may be your answer.  Our community was designed to allow our residents to comfortably and safely age in place.  By offering luxury amenities, wellness programs and activities, and a broad range of care services, we support the whole person – mind, body and spirit.

The amenities at our beautiful community include fireside patio and porches, salon, fitness room, massage room, theatre/chapel and more.  We also have a bistro, and along with restaurant-style dining in our main dining room, we offer residents a private dining area for intimate dinners with family and friends.

We consider it part of our job to find creative solutions that can extend the stay of our residents even when their health conditions change, and often are able to give them a quality of care at a lower cost to families.  For assisted living residents, an individualized care plan is determined (based on five levels of care) after a thorough assessment with our Wellness Director, and in agreement with the resident and their family.

Along with our in-house care services, which include around-the-clock care managers and access to a licensed nurse on-site/on-call 24/7, we also refer residents to home health and out-patient therapy services.  These are third-party providers we know and trust who bring additional services to our residents in the form of skilled medical professionals, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and others.

MorningStar of Wheat Ridge has stylish suites for assisted living including spacious studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floor plans.  If a family member requires memory care, our Reflections Neighborhood offers suites devoted to the specialized care of those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.   We also offer respite care and short-term stays from a week to a full month. Assisted Living Offers a Variety of Benefits

December 16, 2022 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Assisted living communities such as MorningStar at Mountain Shadows are designed to offer seniors 24/7 personal care with a wide range of wellness services targeted to their needs. A Place for Mom, one of the largest senior living referral websites, explains in many cases, today’s communities may be a healthier, safer alternative for many elderly adults. Along with giving residents the help they need to maintain their independence, residents and families get peace of mind knowing someone is always around to lend a helping hand as well as all the benefits derived from the social connections offered by community life.

A Place for Mom cites several studies, which shows the extensive services and programs offered by assisted living can aid seniors in avoiding many commonplace problems affecting the elderly. Getting the proper nutrition is one of those things as many elderly people struggle with meal prep and cooking, and for those who are no longer driving, buying groceries can be challenging. At MorningStar of Mountain Shadows, our Executive Chef specializes in creating tasty, nutritional meals designed to delight our residents.

Another problem many elderly adults have is managing medications properly. In fact, the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists estimate people age 65 to 69 take an average of 15 prescriptions a year so it is no wonder many seniors get confused. However, experts warn skipping doses or taking too much medication can result in deadly consequences and unfortunately too many seniors end up in the hospital each year due to medication “non-compliance.”  For this reason, MorningStar offers medication management to our residents.

Perhaps most importantly we provide a full range of wellness programs and activities designed to keep residents engaged mentally, physically, spiritually and socially. Our holistic support allows residents to enjoy their golden years and live as comfortably and as safely as possible. Contact us for more information about exceptional assisted living in Colorado Springs.

Myths and Facts About Parkinson’s Disease

December 14, 2022 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

We often come to think something is true if we hear it stated as if it is a fact. Doctors say this happens in medicine more frequently than we realize. One such disease with lots of misinformation surrounding it is Parkinson’s disease (PD), a neurodegenerative disorder affecting predominantly dopamine-producing (“dopaminergic”) neurons in a specific area of the brain called substantia nigra. Symptoms develop slowly over years and may include tremors (mainly at rest); bradykinesia (slowness of movement); limb rigidity; and gait and balance problems.

One common misconception regarding PD is it only affects a person’s movement. Doctors explain this is untrue as symptoms can also include: cognitive impairment or dementia, depression and anxiety, sleep dysfunction, pain, apathy, sexual dysfunction, and bowel incontinence. Another thing many people believe is levodopa, one of the most effective treatments for PD, is only effective for a certain amount of time. However, experts say it is not the drug that becomes less potent but the fact that the “key enzyme that converts levodopa to dopamine (aromatic acid decarboxylase or AADC) is predominantly found in the dopamine neurons of the substantia nigra, which are lost during progression of the disease.”

People should know tremors are not always a symptom of PD, and that some people with PD never get them. In terms of the trajectory of the disease, it varies with individuals. Also, research suggests staying physically active can slow progression and reduce symptoms.

Although the cause of the disease is not known nor is there a cure for it, there are treatments used to improve symptoms and allow people to have a good quality of life. While current therapies don’t slow or stop PD, researchers are working to identify biomarkers to enable earlier detection and hope to find better treatments.

Balance Exercises May Reduce Your Risk of Falling

December 12, 2022 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), every year more than one in four people over the age of 65 suffer from a fall, and many of those accidents require a trip to the emergency department.  In addition to serious injuries, some falls even result in death.  To help mitigate the risk, experts recommend that along with safety modifications to the home that elderly adults also do balance exercises.

Balance exercises are relatively easy-to-do and can improve both your balance as well as increase lower body strength.  Ask your doctor for some suggestions or take a look at the Internet. Most do not require special equipment other than someone to assist you if needed.  The exercises can be done throughout the day and each one only takes a few minutes to do.

One example of a balance exercise is called Tightrope Walk.  This easy exercise improves balance, posture, and core strength.  Start in a standing position and lift your arms extending them out to your sides.  Now walk in a straight line keeping your gaze focused on a fixed point in the distance.  Each time you raise your foot, pause with it in the raised position for 2 to 3 seconds.  Alternating your feet, continue for 20 to 30 steps.

Another exercise is Rock the Boat, which starts by standing with your feet hip-distance apart and extending your arms out to your sides.  Lift your left foot off the floor and bend your knee to bring your heel toward your bottom holding it there for up to 30 seconds.  Now do the same with the other side.  Do each side 3 times.

At MorningStar Assisted Living and Memory Care at Mountain Shadows, we understand the importance of our resident’s living life to the fullest.  This is why we offer a Life Enrichment program that focuses on creative ways to stay physically, intellectually, socially and spiritually active.  Please see our website for more information about our beautiful community in Colorado Springs.

This post is intended for informational purposes only.  Before beginning any exercises, please consult with your health care provider.

Adding Beans to Your Diet May Help You Live to 100

December 09, 2022 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

When we look at cultures with a reputation for longevity, leading nutritionists and food scientists say there is one food group that stands out. “Blue zones,” areas known for having many of their inhabitants live to an advanced age of hundred years or more, include in their diet, five of the ten most recommended foods. All are from the bean family and include lentils, soybeans, peanuts (a legume in the same family as peas and lentils), chickpeas and black beans.

People living on the Japanese island of Okinawa might enjoy a dinner of stir-fried green beans, soybeans or mung sprouts. Another meal in Nicoya, Costa Rico typically includes black beans. Known for a high level of anthocyanins, a pigment that gives red, purple, and blue plants their rich coloring, beans help fight free radicals and offer anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and anti-cancer benefits. In fact, anthocyanins offer 10 times the antioxidants of an equivalent serving of oranges.

Nutritionists say beans also boost the immune system by supplying the fiber our microbiomes need. They suggest the local diet of people in blue zones help them avoid many of the same health risks Americans suffer from such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, dementia and cancers.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, we offer residents a lifestyle in which to comfortably and safely age in place with a range of hospitality and care services, luxury amenities and a complement of wellness programs and activities. In addition, our all-day dining service includes meals prepared under the direction of our Executive Chef and made largely from scratch using the freshest ingredients.

Situated at the foot of the Rocky Mountains and convenient to medical facilities and other services, MorningStar at Mountain Shadows offers 45 suites for assisted living in spacious studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floor plans. Additionally, the Reflections Neighborhood has 19 secure suites devoted to specialized dementia care for residents with memory impairment. Contact us or visit our website for more information.

Decorate Your Assisted Living Suite to Improve Happiness and Functionality

November 18, 2022 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

We all know that life changes can be fraught with anxiety and fear and moving into assisted living is certainly a major change for many seniors.  However, experts say there are several things families can do to help ease the transition period.

One of those things is to help your loved one make a comfortable home in their new suite.  Julia Bailey, a senior associate and interior design project manager with Denver-based OZ Architecture, explains that, "Moving into assisted living often can feel like a loss of independence and privacy for your loved one, but thoughtful interior design can go a long way toward improving happiness and well-being for the resident, as well as improving overall functionality of the new living space."

Ms. Bailey cautions that you need to remember to let your loved one have a say in how their new home will be decorated including the personal mementos and photos they want to bring with them and which ones they want to display.  Triggering happy memories with sentimental items is a big step toward making their new place a real home.  Also, accent pillows and pictures are an easy way to add a lot of color and attractiveness to their place.

Please keep in mind safety concerns when placing furniture and avoid using area rugs that can become trip hazards or overcrowding a room and not leaving enough space to easily navigate.  Install hand rails where needed and make sure there is easily accessible lighting in the bathrooms and hallways if the person is getting up at night.

Helping your loved one stay organized can improve the home’s safety as well as the aesthetic.  Consider any mobility issues the person may have and make sure frequently used items are within easy reach on a shelf.  Chairs and sofas should be firm and stable.

MorningStar of Wheat Ridge offers residents a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community.  We have 45 private suites for assisted living and another 19 secure memory care suites for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  The stylish floor plans of our spacious suites are well-appointed and all that is missing are your own furnishings and personal items.  Also, you will not need to leave behind your furry friend – yes, we are pet friendly!

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. Are You Noticing Bumps or Bruises on Your Loved One?

November 16, 2022 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Is your loved one or older family member starting to show signs of bruising and small scrapes or cuts? These mishaps can be signs that your loved one is having trouble with balance and physical ability and may be cause to investigate for other symptoms of dementia. Falls aren't an inevitable part of living with dementia; however, some symptoms can make people with dementia more at risk of falling or injuring themselves. Memory loss often causes individuals to be distracted or confused, which in turn leads to clumsiness and lack of caution. If you’re in need of memory care in Littleton, MorningStar Assisted Living offers holistic memory care options focused on safety, happiness, and individuality.

Falls or small scrapes may not be an immediate cause for concern. However, a simple fall can result in hip fractures, traumatic brain injuries, broken bones, and much more. If a senior with suspected memory loss problems is still driving or operating machinery, their risk for danger is heightened. Moving a Parent into Assisted Living Can Cause Feelings of Guilt

November 14, 2022 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Many adult children feel as if they let their parents down by moving them into an assisted living community. Mom or dad may have even asked years ago that you never put them into a “home,” and at the time, you made the promise; and/or you know families whose adult children have opened their home to their parents. You keep thinking your parents spent years caring for you, and now when they need help, you turn to strangers to provide the care they need.

Experts explain feelings of guilt are normal and moving a loved one to an assisted living community is probably one of the hardest decisions you will have to make as an adult. However, they quickly add it is important to remember they were not getting the assistance they needed at home. For their safety and wellbeing, they needed to move to a place where they would receive the proper care.

Rather than waste time thinking you have let them down, think of it as giving them a better quality of life where they can safely age in place. Experts say stop comparing yourself to others who may have made different decisions; and most of all to remember “people who don’t help and don’t understand the situation aren’t qualified to make judgments or accusations.” Also, remember your loved one is getting older, and chances are their health is not going to improve in the long-term regardless of where they are living. By getting the care they need, assisted living can offer a senior the feeling of independence.

If you are looking at senior living communities on the north side of Metro Denver, we encourage you to consider MorningStar of Wheat Ridge.  We provide all the amenities, wellness programs, and care services residents need for their comfort and wellbeing.  Our beautiful community offers 45 bright suites for assisted living in a range of configurations to accommodate residents’ preferences and needs.   In addition, 19 secure suites are devoted to the care of those with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia. Assisted Living at Colorado Springs’ MorningStar at Mountain Shadows

November 11, 2022 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Too often seniors mistakenly believe that moving into assisted living means an end to their independence and their life as they knew it.  We want to reassure you that at today’s assisted living communities like MorningStar at Mountain Shadows; nothing could be further from the truth.

Aging.com explains that while changes in a person’s ability to care for themselves can be caused by underlying medical conditions, studies show the importance of seniors receiving the assistance they need with the ADLs (activities of daily living). “Functional status and the ability to care for oneself have a significant impact on a senior's quality of life.  Unmet needs for help with activities of daily living can lead to malnutrition, poor personal hygiene, isolation, illnesses like urinary tract infections (UTIs), and falls.”

Another benefit of getting the help you need when you need it, is it actually gives the person a renewed sense of independence and lets them feel like they are once again in control of their life.  Independence promotes a sense of achievement as well as a sense of self-worth and purpose.  It inspires achievement, and reminds seniors that they still have a lot to contribute to their families, their communities and the world as a whole.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, one important part of our mission statement includes “valuing all seniors as gifted and contributing individuals — a commitment to creating a community that promotes a healthy, engaged lifestyle, while providing security and independence.”  Thus, our entire community is focused on physical, intellectual, spiritual and social activities that present creative ways for our residents to stay active and productive each day.  Residents may also tap into their own unique talents and experiences by leading special interest clubs.

Our beautiful home has 45 assisted living suites to meet a variety of needs from spacious studios to one-bedroom and two-bedroom floorplans.  While enjoying their stylish private suites, assisted living residents have peace of mind knowing that help is readily available when they need it. In addition, our Reflections Neighborhood has 19 suites devoted to the specialized care of residents with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.   Please call us or visit our website to learn more about MorningStar’s senior living in Colorado Springs.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. How to Remove the Stigma Around Assisted Living

October 24, 2022 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Many of us joke about “senior moments” when we have lapses in our memory. However, when memory loss and other cognitive functions begin to deteriorate for seniors, it becomes a difficult realm to navigate. Doing daily household tasks and running errands could feel overwhelming for some seniors dealing with memory loss. As we age, things become more difficult, and it is nothing to be ashamed of. Issues arise when seniors do not recognize or refuse to admit the need for help from their loved ones or a senior living community or retirement home. This refusal may often stem from stigma surrounding an adult's need for help or an extra hand.

If you notice yourself or a loved one running behind on bills or food going bad in the fridge, it may be time for an honest discussion about the idea of assisted living options and what next steps should be taken to ensure your loved one’s safety while also maintaining respect. It’s not wrong for seniors to need help and it’s important that they know that. MorningStar Senior Living in Des Moines understands the mental challenges for seniors to accept needing help. Within its communities, MorningStar offers Assisted Living with support at various levels to aid in the activities of daily living. Around-the-clock Care Managers are on site to ensure the comfort and safety of resident’s living in MorningStar’s contemporary and holistic senior living facilities.

The only difference in our senior years is that we may have to open ourselves to a little help once in a while. From that degree of honesty and transparency, we enter into a truer human experience, one in which we can receive and give love. For adult children, spouses, or caregivers, be honest and show respect to your loved one who is in need of help. There should always be mutual trust and compassion when discussing a topic such as Assisted Living.

Try These Great Fall Flavors in Your Next Meal

October 21, 2022 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Through proper diets and healthy choices, food is a healing medicine unlike any other. It is also one of the great joys of living, especially when enjoyed in community. With Fall approaching, our appetites are searching for warm, hearty, and familiar meals. For seniors, it’s important to consume foods high in antioxidants, vitamins, and healthy fats throughout the year. Finding foods that can meet all our needs can be difficult, but these fall foods might just offer you that brilliant and beautiful meal that you’ve been searching for.

Butternut squash is a type of winter squash with pale orange skin and a bright orange interior that is often served in the fall and winter months. It is great in soups, pastas, and roasted on its own with some olive oil. Butternut squash is high in potassium, which can help keep your blood pressure in check. Managing your blood pressure can reduce your risk for stroke and heart disease.

Who doesn’t love pumpkin flavored dishes? Well did you know that pumpkins offer vitamin C, vitamin E, iron, and folate, all of which strengthen your immune system? Pumpkin also helps ease inflammation, which keeps your skin and body calmer and happier. It’s best to consume pumpkin without added sugars or unhealthy fats, but a little moderation is fine. It is the holidays, after all.

At MorningStar Assisted Living Des Moines, our senior living dining experience is inspired by the belief that diet is the centerpiece of personal wellness. Our trained Executive Chefs design seasonal menus that feature the freshest ingredients from high quality producers, locally sourced when possible. Sometimes even from our own garden! It’s great to bring these fresh fall foods to our tables whenever possible.

If you love the sound of built-in companionship, predictable budgeting and the security that comes from residing in an independent living community, MorningStar Senior Living retirement homes in Des Moines, Iowa takes care of the worry and stress of aging, allowing you more time to do the things you love. What Does Assisted Living Offer?

October 19, 2022 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

While assisted living has been around in the U.S. for the last several decades, some people are still confused as to what it means. Senior living communities that offer assisted living provide long-term housing for seniors to safely age in place. As it is not skilled nursing care, assisted living residents are overall active and independent, but may need support with activities of daily living (ADLs), such as bathing, dressing, and using the toilet. As a resident, you get 24/7 care and nutrition, daily meals as well as benefit from a range of wellness programs, the company of fellow residents and staff, and peace of mind knowing help is at hand if needed.

The American Health Care Association and the National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA NCAL) reports assisted living is a fast-growing sector of senior living with over 800,000 Americans currently residing in an assisted living community. Experts say in some cases, depending on the level of services provided, in-home care can actually be more expensive and doesn’t offer all of the services and amenities found in many assisted living communities.

Homes like MorningStar at Mountain Shadows provide residents with much more than supportive care. Our Life Enrichment programs offer physical, intellectual, spiritual or social engagement with creative ways to stay active and productive as we believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless. We act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof.

MorningStar at Mountain Shadows is part of the MorningStar Senior Living Company, whose mission is to “cast a new light on senior living.” We start by creating a true home for our residents, made possible by a dedicated team who understands the highest expression of living is to share their talents, time and energy with others.
