Muscle Loss in Older Adults

October 09, 2024 by Quinn A in Senior Living

The term sarcopenia refers to age-related muscle loss and is a natural part of growing older. However, it also may occur at a faster pace after prolonged periods of inactivity from injury, illness or the pain of osteoarthritis. Sarcopenia causes muscle atrophy and brings on problems such as poor balance and greater weakness, which in turn, can result in more inactivity and increased risks for falls.

Seniors with muscle atrophy may have difficulty reaching their arms upward, opening jars, typing on a keyboard or even tying shoes.  The Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine reports on a study that found “older men who did eight weeks of strength training lost about 25% of their muscle gains after they stopped training for two weeks.”

Jodi Klein, a physical therapist with Harvard’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital, suggests a few things you can do if you know you have a surgical procedure ahead of you that could cause muscle atrophy. She says if you are currently active, keep it up; if not, use this time to get started.  Klein explains, “The better shape you are in going into surgery, the better shape you will be coming out, and the less chance you have of enduring muscle loss.”

Older adults who want to regain muscle strength should talk to their health care provider about the best methods. Experts recommend an exercise routine that builds both upper and lower body strength. This could include weight training with dumbbells and resistance bands in conjunction with walking, swimming, and biking. If it would be helpful, think about turning to an expert to aid you in regaining strength.

At MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care at Mountain Shadows, we provide older adults carefree retirement years with a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community.  Along with a building designed to meet our residents’ every need, MorningStar offers a range of programs and activities to support physical, intellectual, social and spiritual well-being.  Please contact us or visit our website for more information about our senior living in Colorado Springs.

The Advantages of a Senior Living Community

October 04, 2024 by Quinn A in Senior Living

As it turns out, many seniors are quite happy with their decision to move into an independent or assisted living community.  In part, that may be since many of today’s senior communities are loaded with numerous amenities and activities.   As a resident, you are provided with a lifestyle of comfort and community as well as a sense of safety and security.  Here are some of the many benefits:

  • When older adults move out of their family home into a senior community, they find themselves freed from lots of responsibilities.  Owning a home requires routine care and maintenance such as yard work and other housekeeping chores.

  • Seniors often live alone and experience feelings of loneliness and isolation.  Also, as people age, many are reluctant to drive, which means they end up spending a lot of time at home by themselves.  This is something that is not a problem in senior communities.  While activities are optional, there is generally something of interest for everyone.

  • For those who do not drive anymore, senior communities usually offer some form of transportation.  In addition, many routinely schedule day trips to activities such as plays, museums, shopping or other events.

  • We also know that many older adults who live alone do not eat well.  In some cases, grocery shopping and preparing food has become difficult.  Many communities make healthy, nutritious food a priority and offer choices such as low sodium, no sugar added etc.

  • As an assisted living resident, you will receive help with activities of daily living (ADLs) to provide a better quality of life. Around-the-clock care managers, access to licensed nurses and medication management are just a few of the many services provided to ensure your safety and to meet your needs.

  • Finally, we cannot forget the importance of socializing and making new friends at any age.  Even for individuals who value their privacy, there is still the comfort of having other people around.  If the event of a fall or medical emergency, help is always close at hand.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, we provide all this and more. Our broad range of services and amenities include all-day dining, salon, theater, fitness room, bistro, fireside patio, wellness programs and activities to promote a healthy, engaged lifestyle for residents. Please contact us or visit our website for more information about exceptional senior living in Colorado Springs.

MorningStar’s foundation is based on the mission to honor God, value seniors and invest in our staff to create a unique senior living experience.  Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, we provide the finest senior living Colorado Springs offers.  Please contact our team to inquire about availability, pricing or to set up a tour.

Do You Need a Vitamin Supplement?

October 02, 2024 by Quinn A in Senior Living

As we age, it becomes more important than ever to protect our health but making decisions on how we do it can be confusing at best. One day it seems this diet is better than another and they have lots of initials such as DASH, MIND, TLC or KETO as well as Mediterranean, vegan, vegetarian and flexitarian diets. Adding to the challenge is whether we need a daily multivitamin.

While it is a good idea to get advice from your healthcare provider, it doesn’t hurt to hear what some other experts say. For example, the Harvard School of Public Health says if you eat a healthy diet, a multivitamin may have little or no benefit. A healthy diet should include plenty of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, good protein sources and healthy fats.

However, the National Academy of Medicine cautions some Americans may not be getting enough of specific vitamins and minerals such as vitamin D and vitamin E from food sources alone. Vitamin deficiency can also occur in people with diseases like celiac, ulcerative colitis, or cystic fibrosis, which cause their digestive systems to not function properly. Others who may benefit from the addition of specific vitamins include the elderly or conditions such as pregnancy, alcoholism and taking certain medications including treating high blood pressure.

Doctors say even those with diseases such as osteoporosis may only need to increase their intake of nutrients targeted toward maintaining bone health, or if that is not possible to take a supplement. If in doubt, ask your healthcare team if you should consult with a dietician. Remember to let your doctors know about any supplements you are taking in case of drug interactions with prescription medications.

MorningStar at Mountain Shadows is an assisted living community in Colorado Springs with beautiful common areas and well-designed suites.  Our residents enjoy a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community, and a hospitality and care team who feel called and honored to serve seniors.  Please contact us or visit our website for more information about luxury senior living at MorningStar.

Cataracts Are the Most Common Age-Related Eye Condition

September 27, 2024 by Quinn A in Senior Living

The National Institute of Health (NIH) reports if you are lucky enough to live a long life, along the way, you will develop cataracts. While it may not get to the point of requiring surgery, they say everyone eventually has them. However, while cataracts are the most common age-related eye condition, they are also the leading cause of preventable blindness.

So how do you know if you have cataracts or if it is time for surgery? Ophthalmologists explain the most accurate way to keep track of your eye health is to get regular eye exams; but there are some signs you can look out for on your own. One of the top changes you may notice is more difficulty driving at night. Cataracts make it much harder to see in the dark. Reading may also become difficult as you find yourself needing brighter and brighter light to focus on the page.

Other symptoms can include seeing everything through a slightly tinted yellow or brown hue; or experiencing halos around light sources such as headlights or streetlights. Some cataracts can cause double vision, and between seeing halos and double vision makes night driving especially dangerous. Experts say if you are experiencing any of these symptoms, please make an appointment to have your eyes checked.

If surgery is recommended, remember every year more than four million cataract surgeries are performed in the United States. It is important to follow your doctor’s advice for a speedy recovery. Your eyes will be frail for several weeks afterward but most people have little to no pain and experience good vision almost immediately.

Food to Enjoy without the Guilt

September 27, 2024 by Quinn A in Senior Living

When dieting, it is best to shy away from fried foods, foods loaded with empty carbs and sugary foods. Dieticians say that still leaves a lot of tasty food we can eat without feeling guilty. At the top of the list are non-starchy vegetables of which there are many ways to prepare them to ensure they are both satisfying and tasty.

If vegetables aren’t your favorite foods, it may be you are not creative enough in preparing them. A simple suggestion is to give your veggies a quick spray of olive oil, add seasoning and a few cloves of garlic. Either roast or air fry to give them a punch of flavor. If you love dips, think about switching up from heavy-caloric dips to ones using salsa or low-fat yogurt.

A list of veggies nutrient-dense and light in calories includes broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, carrots, sprouts and kale. If you want fruits, the best to eat are watermelon and cantaloupe, most berries and kiwi. Beata Rydyger, a registered nutritionist based in Los Angeles, says “Along with these foods being beneficial for weight maintenance and weight loss, they are very high in macronutrients such as carbohydrates and micronutrients including vitamins and minerals.” Moreover these foods are rich in fiber, and fiber keeps blood sugar levels stable and keeps you feeling fuller longer.

Other foods that fill you up are nuts and seeds. While they are higher in calories than fruits and veggies, a handful contains protein as well as vitamins and minerals. Snacking mid-afternoon on a cup of low-fat cottage cheese, hard-boiled egg or cup of tuna helps ensure you won’t overeat at dinner time. Remember to stay hydrated throughout the day. Drinking a glass of water or bone broth before a meal can help reduce the amount you eat during the meal. However dieticians say when making any dietary changes, you should start slowly and work with your healthcare provider.

The MorningStar of Littleton assisted living and memory care community represent the finest senior living Littleton, CO offers. We have 65 assisted living suites in a wide choice of floor plans, and 20 memory care suites devoted to those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. Using Music to Elevate Mood

September 25, 2024 by Quinn A in Senior Living

The Harvard Health Publishing journal recently reported on a study of a number of studies focused on the effectiveness of music therapy. The study found listening to music, singing and other forms of music therapy “can create significant improvements in mental health and smaller improvements in physical health–related quality of life.” Researchers sum it up by saying music offers a positive impact on the psychological quality of life; and is an easy way to raise spirits and help us feel better.

So if we feel music makes us happier and more relaxed, it is not our imagination. AARP quotes Laurie Keough, a clinical associate professor of music therapy at Nazareth College in Rochester, New York, who explains, “Music is processed all throughout the brain;” which is why it is applicable in so many different situations.

Music therapy is an established form of therapy with a lot of evidence of the benefits. These include improving health care goals like decreasing anxiety, improving mood and decreasing pain perception among others. Moreover since listening to music is one of the best ways to get the benefits; it is easy for all of us to do.

Researchers say as we listen to music, it triggers the release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that’s part of the brain’s reward system, making us feel happier. It can also distract from negative thoughts and help us focus on more pleasurable emotions. A soothing playlist can be used to quiet the mind to help transition to sleep. Moreover as music is known to bridge social connections, many senior living communities hold group sing-a-longs, which are not only fun but support studies showing singing improves language, memory and processing of information.

Other studies show the power of music to trigger memories in people suffering from dementia. It can help them feel connected to others, even when verbal communication is difficult as music memories remain in the brain long after other memories fade. Some dementia patients are able to sing or dance to songs from their childhood even after normal forms of communication no longer exist.

At the MorningStar of Littleton, we proudly provide senior living options including assisted living designed to help residents maintain their independence; and all-inclusive Alzheimer’s care Littleton, CO families can count on. Our memory care encompasses meaningful activities and programs that leverage the power of music, dance, art, aromatherapy and animals. Contact us to learn more about the area’s top senior living community and ask about our Move-in Specials. Depression is Not a Normal Part of Growing Older

September 06, 2024 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Depression can affect people at any age including senior citizens.  According to Web MD, “Late-life depression affects about 6 million Americans age 65 and older, but only 10% receive treatment for depression.”  They suggest the reason for this may be that the symptoms seniors display are often ignored or assumed to be a result of illnesses and medications or just a normal part of growing older.

There are many reasons why seniors suffer from depression including major changes in their lives such as retirement, the death of a spouse, illnesses, disabilities and social isolation.  People suffering from very painful, disabling, or life-threatening illnesses are especially vulnerable to depression or the worsening of symptoms.  Furthermore, depression can be caused by medications that are commonly prescribed to the elderly including blood pressure medication, beta-blockers, sleeping pills, tranquilizers, calcium-channel blockers and medication for Parkinson’s as well as others.

Suffering from depression prevents seniors from enjoying life as they used to and can be the cause of a change in appetite, problems sleeping and impact physical health.  HelpGuide.org says, while sadness is one sign of depression, some seniors do not recognize or admit to feelings of sadness.  Rather someone may “complain instead of low motivation, a lack of energy, or physical problems.  In fact, physical complaints, such as arthritis pain or worsening headaches, are often the predominant symptom of depression in the elderly.”

All too often seniors just accept depression as a part of the aging process but there are steps you can take to help yourself or your loved one.  You first need to talk to your health care provider to rule out other problems, and then perhaps you need to make changes in your lifestyle.  Experts suggest that isolation and inactivity can make depression worse and they recommend getting involved in physical, mental and social activities.

This post is intended for informational purposes only.  Please contact your health care provider with any questions or concerns you have regarding your health.

Maintaining Good Balance as You Age

August 19, 2024 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Falls among senior citizens are all too common, and in many cases, threaten a person’s independence and way of life. Injuries from falls include to the head, hip fractures, and in extreme cases lead to death; and poor balance is one of the reasons people fall.

Experts explain a person’s balance declines with age due to loss of sensory elements, the ability to integrate information and issue motor commands; and loss of musculoskeletal function as well as poor vision and inner ear problems. Certain medications and common medical conditions in older adults can also cause problems. Balance begins to decline in midlife, starting at about age 50. In one study, adults in their 30s and 40s could stand on one foot for a minute or more. By age 50, the time decreased to 45 seconds.

The National Institute on Aging (NIH) explains maintaining good balance as you age and learning about fall prevention can help you get around, stay independent, and carry out daily activities. Targeted exercises like walking, strength training and workouts designed to improve stability are some of the best ways to improve balance. Consult with your doctor as to whether a physical therapist or other professional could help design suitable exercises to improve your balance.

Also talk to your doctor about any dietary changes you should make if your balance problems are due to high or low blood pressure. Something as simple as eating less salt, maintaining a healthy weight and exercising may help with high blood pressure.

If you have low blood pressure and experience dizziness, do not stand up too quickly, drink plenty of fluids such as water and avoid alcohol. Your doctor may need to evaluate if it is safe for you to drive. To reduce your risk of a fall, avoid walking in the dark, wear low-heeled, rubber-soled shoes; and if you need a mobility aid such as a cane or walker, use it.

If you are looking for outstanding senior living or memory care, MorningStar at Mountain Shadows in Colorado Springs offers a true home distinguished by comfort, wellness and love. A Person’s Gait may Signal Early Signs of Alzheimer’s

August 19, 2024 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Several new studies including one from the journal Current Biology, report the way a senior walks may be messaging something about their future cognitive health. Researchers say walking relies on a person’s navigational skills, which demands mental engagement.

A slowing of a person’s walking pace is one of the things studies are looking into as an early warning sign of Alzheimer’s. People may start to take smaller steps and drift from side to side as well as exhibit poor balance and a history of frequent falls.  Ryan Glatt, a certified personal trainer, senior brain health coach, and director of the FitBrain Program at Pacific Neuroscience Institute in California, told Medical News Today, “In clinical settings, gait-based tests can be helpful for determining fall risk, especially with distractions, and perhaps can be part of a more comprehensive cognitive evaluation in the near future.”

Other studies report people with early Alzheimer’s have difficulty turning when walking. Researchers say the problem was not detected in older, healthy participants who suffered from mild cognitive impairment, suggesting the problem is specific to Alzheimer’s. Glatt explained the reason might be connected to changes in the hippocampus, a region of the brain partially responsible for spatial memory that helps to control visuospatial navigation.

Another early warning sign of Alzheimer’s is an altered sense of a person’s environmental perceptions. For example, a person may struggle to understand objects, and become confused by thinking something is 2D when it is really 3D; or vice versa.

Dr. Jonathan Fellows, who leads the Michigan Institute for Neurological Disorders, Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorder Center, adds, “Observation of gait is an important assessment in the diagnosis of various dementias, including Alzheimer disease, as patients with this disorder can have what is called dyspraxia, or difficulty doing a previously learned task – in this case walking or turning.” Researchers explain some of the problems that appear to be specific to Alzheimer’s might allow doctors to diagnose patients earlier; and without the need for blood, spinal fluid or speech tests.

At MorningStar of Littleton, we offer experienced, compassionate Alzheimers care along with assisted living. Our Reflections Neighborhood is distinct from the rest of our community and has been named an “Alzheimer’s Association Leader in Dementia Care.” All of our suites include emergency call systems and handicap-accessible bathrooms. The Role of Probiotics and Prebiotics in Gut Health

August 02, 2024 by Quinn A in Senior Living

The last several years have brought probiotics and prebiotics into the spotlight. However, it can be confusing as to what the difference is between the two and the role they play in our bodies. Experts say both are important to our health; probiotics are beneficial bacteria, while prebiotics are food for these bacteria.

In other words, “Probiotics are live bacteria found in certain foods or supplements and can provide numerous health benefits. Prebiotics are substances from types of carbs (mostly fiber) that humans can’t digest. The beneficial bacteria in your gut eat this fiber.”

The Harvard Medical School explains our large intestine has 100 trillion good bacteria essential to our health called microbiome. These good microbes help maintain healthy bowel function. Each person has their own unique microbiome from birth and we add to the good microbes by the food we consume. However, a diet high in sugar and fat can negatively affect gut health by encouraging the growth of bad bacteria, allowing them to grow faster and colonize more easily, without as many helpful bacteria to prevent it from happening.

Research shows certain foods like yogurt and kefirs with live, active cultures are beneficial to adding to our microbiome. Unpasteurized, fermented foods like kombucha, miso, sauerkraut and sour pickles contain healthy microbes but most packaged fermented foods are pasteurized, which destroys the microbes. The best way to get around that is to learn to ferment foods at home.

Experts say while there are many probiotic supplements on the market, it is not easy to find exactly what you need. Most probiotic supplements contain just a few bacterial strains, compared to the many stains naturally found in the gut. “Although there are many claims made by probiotic products, there’s now reliable, evidence-based support that certain probiotics — like Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium (bacteria), and Saccharomyces boulardii (yeast) — are generally safe and helpful in specific conditions.”

This post is intended for informational purposes only.  Please contact your health care provider with any questions or concerns you have regarding your health.

The Bond Between Children and Grandparents

July 13, 2024 by Quinn A in Senior Living

To recognize the value of the relationship between grandchildren and grandparents, “Grandparents Day” is celebrated on the Sunday after Labor Day. While not a public holiday, President Jimmy Carter signed the proclamation in 1978 stating it should be observed each year.

For kids, having more people involved in their lives other than their parents is a good thing. Many grandparents’ unconditional love brings with it acceptance, patience and unwavering support as they readily recognize the child’s accomplishments and provides a safe, trusted harbor. Several studies validate the love and emotional closeness grandparents provide can make a positive impact on a child’s healthy development. Moreover, as grandparents may be retired, they have more leisure time to spend with the grandkids.

Research also shows that a close, involved relationship is good for grandparents too, and contributes to a healthier, happier and possibly even longer life. Grandparents’ relationship with grandkids can include the role of caregiver, teacher, playmate and cheering squad depending on where they live; and does not come with the responsibilities of being the parent. Grandparents can uniquely provide the child with a sense of their family history, heritage, and identity. They know great stories about the child’s parents and can help pass on family traditions and life stories.

If your child does not have any grandparents, consider adopting an elderly person who does not have grandchildren.  If you don’t know any senior citizens personally, call a senior community in your area and ask if they have activities where your child would be welcome. If you missed last year’s Grandparents Day, put it on the calendar and celebrate it with some of your favorite seniors this year.

Medication and Older Adults

July 10, 2024 by Quinn A in Senior Living

It may surprise you to know according to the Department of Health and Human Services, fifty-five percent of seniors are non-compliant with prescription drug orders and do not take medication as prescribed by their doctors. It is a serious problem as approximately 200,000 older adults are hospitalized annually due to adverse drug reactions.

Medical professionals say there are steps seniors and those who care for an elderly loved one can do to help lessen the problem. To start with, take medications as prescribed including the correct dosage and time, with or without food, and never crush a pill into a powder. Especially if you see multiple doctors, be sure to always bring a list and dosage of all medications you are taking including non-prescription and herbal supplements.

Experts say using the same pharmacy can help reduce drug interactions, and to be sure to read the warnings regarding adverse reactions. Periodically review your prescriptions with your doctors to make sure you are taking the right dosage and still need the medications. To see if any meds you take have a warning for usage in the elderly, check the American Geriatric Society’s Beers Criteria for Potentially Inappropriate Medication Use in Older Adults. It is also recommended you properly dispose of older medications and drugs you no longer take.

If you are on medications to treat diabetes or high blood pressure, you need to continue to test your glucose level and BP numbers. Other drugs may be prescribed with the understanding you will have your blood tested periodically and it is important to follow through as too high or too low of a dosage can cause problems.

How to Support a Senior’s Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing in Assisted Living

June 26, 2024 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Seniors often experience bouts of depression and anxiety, especially if they are struggling with different life changes. For seniors in assisted living, their mental health can be impacted by changes in memory, grief, leaving a lifetime home, health concerns, and a myriad of other difficulties. Knowing this, senior living communities like MorningStar Senior Living Jordan Creek, dedicate time to supporting a senior’s mental health and emotional well-being in the following ways:

Creating a Caring Assisted Living Community

When seniors transition to assisted living they may feel overwhelmed and unsure about their situation. This is especially true if they are struggling with other factors outside of their control, such as memory loss, immobility, or personal life changes. Offering community to our residents is a top priority. Assisted living communities with easily accessible amenities and activities promote good mental health in seniors by encouraging them to leave their rooms, socialize, and participate in hobbies that bring them joy.

Personalized Senior Care

No two seniors are the same. This is why we emphasize personalized senior care over a one-size-fits-all approach to mental health. By considering each senior’s preferences, interests, concerns, and symptoms, our assisted living staff can provide better support and care. Our staff at MorningStar works to know our residents personally, making it easy to identify when something shifts in their personality or routine.

Balanced Meals

Seniors who are experiencing mental health concerns may stop cooking for themselves in their homes. This can make health concerns worse, on top of other worries like malnutrition and vitamin deficiencies. Providing balanced meals with ample options keeps seniors healthy at MorningStar and works to promote great mental health in seniors.

The Quest to Stay Young

June 24, 2024 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Market analysts report the anti-aging industry is valued at $40 billion and estimate an increase up to $60 billion in the next eight years. Much of this is due to a culture that considers old age to be a problem that needs fixing; with people investing in expensive creams, procedures, exercises and other interventions to fix the “problem.”

Scientists say in reality old age is probably more varied and modifiable than most of us think. In fact studies show the leap from middle age to late life has no definite biological tipping point. Eric Verdin, president and CEO of the Buck Institute for Research on Aging in CA, reports, “There is an incredible amount of variability between different people.” His research has convinced him that a person’s biological age is more important than their chronological age. Recently the journal of Psychology and Aging published findings that support pushing up the number of what is considered old age.

As people start to live longer, they want to postpone the age in which they are considered old, which many see as a negative condition. In fact experts say old age stereotypes have steadily become more negative over the last 200 years and have fueled “what some call a worldwide crisis of ageism.” This can be problematic as studies find even one’s beliefs regarding old age can lead to worse physical, mental and cognitive health.

While we do know everyone ages differently, it has brought a group of people known as “superagers” to the attention of researchers who want to study why some people remain relatively youthful and healthy long after 70. They speculate one reason may be studies that show adults with a better attitude toward aging are often healthier than their peers.

At MorningStar of Littleton, our unique mission statement “to honor, to value, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities. We specialize in offering residents the finest independent living and assisted living to enable them to live their best life. Offering Support to Someone Who Is Grieving

June 07, 2024 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Death is part of life and if we are fortunate to live a long one, most likely we will have to deal with the loss of a beloved spouse, life partner, child, sibling or friend. As loved ones give our lives purpose, coping with their loss and finding new purpose is difficult as many seniors do not have the opportunities to socialize or get out as they once did.

Grief counselors suggest some things a person’s family and friends can do to help them get through the worst of the grief. If it was your parents who died, be sure to let your surviving parents know how much you miss dad or mom, and share memories you have of the good times. Ask your parents if they have more difficult times during the day dealing with the loss as you could come over or give them a call. Also, be sure to not shy away from saying the deceased person’s name.

Offer to do things with them you know they once did with their spouse such as grocery shopping. If dad did the yard work, either offer to do it or help mom hire a company to take care of it. Help your parents find outlets for socializing, and encourage them to pick up an old hobby or find a new one, or take a class.

Being part of a senior living community such as MorningStar at Mountain Shadows can be very supportive and give the person a sense of belonging. Other residents most likely have had similar experiences and have a special understanding of what the person is going through.

How to Tailor Your Assisted Living Experience to Match Your Needs at MorningStar Senior Living

May 22, 2024 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Finding the best assisted living home for you or a senior loved one can be hard. All of the senior living options available can make the process overwhelming, but by taking the time to research and evaluate your options you’ll likely come to find that you should want an assisted living experience that matches your loved one’s needs and wants. Keep reading to learn how MorningStar Senior Living can help you tailor your assisted living experience to match your needs.

1. Evaluate Your Needs and Preferences

The first step to finding senior living that meets your needs is to determine the level of care you or your loved one needs. If you are searching for assisted living, be sure to track what needs your loved one requires more help with than others. Be sure to factor in any medical support, medication management, or possible future memory care as this can contribute to your loved one’s overall senior living experience.

2. Look for Personalized Care Plans

Choose communities that offer personalized care plans. Personalized care plans make it easy for families and residents to tailor their care routine to their specific needs and preferences. Rooted in holistic practice, personalized care is made to be adaptable, meaning that the care and services can and should change and evolve over time. This flexibility ensures that care remains relevant and effective over time. At MorningStar at Jordan Creek, every aspect of life is tailored to individual needs, from meals to activities and even spirituality.

3. Find an Active Senior Community

MorningStar offers a wide range of activities tailored to residents’ interests. Engaging in these activities helps maintain independence, boost social connections, and build relationships. Building relationships with other residents and staff can enhance your experience and create a supportive community that helps you feel supported and welcomed.

Visit our Website to Learn More About MorningStar of Wheat Ridge

April 24, 2024 by Quinn A in Senior Living

The Mayo Clinic explains our bodies constantly absorb and replace bone tissue. When a person has osteoporosis, their body is removing old bone but not keeping up with making new bone. Early warning signs of osteoporosis include bone fractures, lost height, curved back, sudden back pain and gastrointestinal problems. However, many people have no symptoms, and it isn’t until a bone fracture or a bone density test (measuring the proportion of minerals in the bones), do they learn they have osteoporosis. A step above osteoporosis is osteopenia, which affects approximately half of Americans over age 50.

It is important to work with your doctor if your bone loss has progressed to osteoporosis as there are medications that can help build stronger bones. In addition, you can help increase bone strength with a healthy diet of foods high in calcium, vitamins D and K, and protein. Foods containing calcium include dairy and soy, fish and green leafy vegetables like kale. Additionally, many foods are fortified with calcium so check labels. Protein is found in meat, fish, eggs, soy and dairy products, beans, lentils, and legumes as well as seeds and nuts. Experts recommend people over age 70 increase their uptake of vitamin D to 800 IU daily, which they can also obtain from supplements.

Consuming a lot of salt should be avoided as the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases reports overconsumption of salt can cause the kidneys to excrete calcium. Studies indicate consuming caffeine in coffee or caffeinated drinks can additionally interfere with the body’ absorption of calcium and it is recommended older adults limit their coffee intake to no more than three cups a day. Limiting alcohol also helps maintain bone health. Another component to maintaining or building stronger bones includes weight-bearing exercises.

MorningStar of Wheat Ridge offers assisted living residents a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community with an abundance of amenities. Amenities include beautifully prepared, nutritional meals; theater; fitness room; salon; bistro; scheduled transportation; and a variety of wellness programs and activities. In addition, our Reflections Neighborhood is devoted to the individualized care of those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.   Please visit our website for more information about exceptional senior living in Wheat Ridge, Colorado.
