What are the Benefits of Independent Senior Living?

November 27, 2023 by Quinn A in Senior Living

If I don’t need any assistance, why should I consider a senior living community?

Retirement homes aren’t what you think they are anymore. Independent senior living offers vibrant communities full of resort-style amenities that allow seniors to retire in style. While many seniors may not require assisted living care yet, you can still appreciate the perks of stress-free retirement.

Our senior living retirement homes in Des Moines, Iowa offer seniors a fresh perspective on life. We want to provide you with the very best understanding of what benefits independent senior living can provide for you.

Newfound Friendships- As we age, it becomes more difficult for seniors to spend time with their friends and family. Senior living communities provide easy accessibility to your neighbors. With weekly activities, group hobbies, and community events, it’s easy to meet like-minded individuals that you feel like you’ve known all your life. While you may not require any senior care, independent living at MorningStar brings added joy and excitement to your retirement.

Exploring Passions- Maintaining a home, keeping up with daily chores, and running errands can often distract us from doing the things we enjoy. In independent living at Morningstar, you can explore your passions and find new hobbies you might never have thought of trying. Our community takes care of monotonous tasks so that you can devote more time to learning what brings you joy.

Staying Active- Independent senior living communities keep seniors active and engaged. Through community outings, workout classes, and easily accessible trails and courtyards, seniors are able to stay healthy and happy.

TOP 5 THINGS TO DO IN COLORADO SPRINGS

November 27, 2023 by Quinn A in Senior Living

When you think of Colorado, many images come to mind, but we bet most, if not all of the images involve some type of adventure. Between the majestic Rocky Mountains and the rich culture found in Colorado’s Wild West motif, adventure is the prevailing theme for the residents of our senior living facility in Colorado Springs.

Whether you join a group activity sponsored by MorningStar at Mountain Shadows or take an adventure with your family, let’s take a quick look at the top five things to do in Colorado Springs.

Pikes Peak

Piercing the upper layers of the atmosphere at more than 14,000 feet above sea level, Pikes Peak is the iconic natural wonder that dominates the Colorado landscape. Although you have four ways to ascend Pikes Peak, joining the “Pikes Peak or Bust” tour provides you with the most adventurous, up-close encounter with the towering mountain. For a more laid-back approach to viewing the mountain, we recommend taking a ride on the Broadmoor Manitou and Pike’s Peak Cog Railway.

Garden of the Gods

Nature’s ultimate playground is full of trails that run dozens of miles through dusty red rock formations that provide the perfect picture frame for Pikes Peak. You can explore this archeological wonderland on foot or pick up the speed of your journey by riding a Segway or open-air jeep. Horseback riding tours provide you with a much more intimate experience by taking you places where your feet might not be able to go.

United States Air Force Academy

As one of the four branches that constitute the American military, the United States Air Force Academy is located next to the Rampart Range north of Colorado Springs. Part of the sprawling campus is open to the public, including the more than 30,000-square-foot visitor center. This is where you can dive deep into the academy’s colorful history, as well as learn more about the life of an Air Force Academy cadet. Tours include a 21-minute film and a stop at a model of the visually stunning Cadet Chapel.

United States Olympic and Paralympic Museum

What better way to honor our Olympic heroes than building a museum located in downtown Colorado Springs? The museum incorporates advanced technology and interactive exhibits to tell the stories of our most celebrated Olympians and Paralympians. You can join a tour of the recently renovated Olympic Training Center to learn up close how our Olympic and Paralympic athletes prepare for competition on the world stage.

The Cave of the Winds

For sheer natural beauty, it is hard to top the visually stunning vistas presented by a tour of  The Cave of the Winds. Once you leave the canyon ridge, you step into the chambers of one of the largest cave systems in the United States. After you get out of the cave system, you can enjoy competing in the Wind Walker Challenge Course, as well as take a ride on the Bat-A-Pult zipline. If you possess a brave enough soul, the Terror-Dactyl plunge drops you at a rate of 100 miles per hour over the edge of a cliff.

Experience the Best Colorado Springs Has to Offer

One of the keys to maintaining robust mental and physical health is to be active. At our senior living facility in Colorado Springs, CO, we strive to provide our residents with a wide variety of options to keep their bodies fit and their minds active. Learn more about the top things to do in Colorado Springs by scheduling a tour today of our assisted living facility.

4 WINTER ACTIVITIES FOR SENIORS

November 24, 2023 by Quinn A in Senior Living

When you see the words “Winter” and “Colorado” in the same sentence, you probably envision snowy mountains and cold, blustery winds dominating the coldest season of the year. However, winter in Colorado, especially in southern Colorado, can be dominated by a weather phenomenon called chinook winds. These winds blow in from the west and then travel up the front range of the Rockies bringing with them drier and warmer air. Although snow and cold are a part of Colorado winters, you also can enjoy plenty of warm sunshine at our senior living center in Colorado Springs.

Winter is typically viewed as the season to stay home and read a good book. With winter here being a bit different than the winters experienced by other Americans, let’s look at four winter activities for seniors living at our assisted living facility in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Swimming

We are not talking about the type of swimming that you see on Television when a group of people dive into frigid cold water. No, we are talking about enjoying the best cardio exercise possible by doing laps at an indoor pool, such as the one that we have at our senior living facility. Swimming works out the heart, as well as is beneficial to maintaining vibrant mental health.

Start a Garden

You can grow vegetables during winter, except that you have to do it indoors. Indoor gardening has exploded as one of the most popular hobbies mostly due to the advanced technology used to cultivate vegetables. Several studies demonstrate the relaxing and fulfilling sensations experienced by gardening enthusiasts. It also serves a practical purpose by providing you with vegetables to incorporate into meals.

Play Board Games

On the days during winter when Mother Nature does not cooperate for you to participate in outdoor activities, many of our residents take advantage of the spacious entertainment center to interact over several types of board games. Whether your board game is chess, checkers, or even Monopoly, remaining socially active during winter is an effective strategy to wash away the seasonal blues.

Board games also do a great job of working out our memory and problem-solving muscles.

Get Involved in Group Activities

Another reason to live at our senior living facility in Colorado Springs is to get involved in group activities. Not a day goes by when there isn’t a group event or an outing planned for our residents. Whether you join a group that meets weekly or get involved in a one-time-only group tour, you can expect to remain active socially by participating in yoga and/or ballroom dancing classes, as well as working out physically by bowling in a league.

Stay Active in Winter at MorningStar at Mountain Shadows

Seniors need to stay active to stave off age-related issues such as osteoarthritis and declining memory. Staying active in winter also keeps your mind off the biting cold weather that occasionally drops by in Colorado Springs, CO. At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, we are proud to offer the most diverse, as well as the busiest, activities calendar of any other assisted living facility in Colorado Springs.

Our mission “to honor, to value, to invest” separates our senior living facility from other residences in the Colorado Springs area. Learn more about our activities calendar in winter by scheduling a tour today at MorningStar at Mountain Shadows.

Grieving for a Loved One With Alzheimer’s Disease

November 15, 2023 by Quinn A in Senior Living

When a loved one is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, it is devastating news for all. Family members may quickly start experiencing feelings of grief as they recognize their life is about to be changed by the disease and are uneasy about what the future will hold. Most are left with questions about what to expect next.

As Alzheimer’s begins to take away the person we know and love, the Alzheimer’s Association explains that, “you'll mourn him or her and may experience the different phases of grieving: denial, anger, guilt, sadness and acceptance.” They remind us that feelings of grief do not come in a specific order but rather we go in and out of the various stages.

Feelings of denial include unrealistically hoping the person is not ill or expecting them to get better. Others try to convince themselves their loved one has not changed or try to normalize and make excuses for their behaviors. Anger may include being frustrated with the person or feeling abandoned. You may also experience feelings of resentment with the demands of caregiving and/or resent others who are not helping with care.

Guilt includes having unrealistic thoughts about what you should have done or feeling guilty if you do not visit every day. A spouse that is well and still able to enjoy life may feel guilty that their husband or wife is no longer able to do so. Others may have negative feelings such as wishing the person would die or go away.

The Alzheimer’s Association says you need to face both your positive as well as negative feelings. They also say to be prepared to go through feelings of loss more than once as the disease progresses. Remember your grief is a part of your journey, and if you need help, talk with someone about your feelings.

Along with assisted living, MorningStar at Mountain Shadows provides compassionate and loving care to those suffering from Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. Our memory care residents are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve and spend each day in an atmosphere that celebrates and elevates their lives. Please visit our website for more information about the finest senior living in Colorado Springs.

MorningStar at Mountain Shadows’ mission statement of “to honor, to value, to invest” sets us apart from other

Assisted Living Communities Give Families Peace of Mind

November 10, 2023 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Are you worried about your elderly parents getting the care they need at home? Assisted living communities are one way to make sure they get the care they need, while giving family members the peace of mind they need.

To help ensure the community you choose is a good, all-around fit, experts say the trick is to find one based on your parents’ needs, their lifestyle and budget. A Place for Mom, one of the largest senior living referral websites, says the key to a successful move for mom or dad is to have a frank and open conversation with the family to make sure everyone is on the same page. Be sure your parents have the chance to give their opinion.

When you begin the actual search, remember assisted living is not a nursing home or memory care. To determine the best community for them, start by addressing their ADLs’ (activities of daily living) needs. Keep in mind the amount of help they need right now and how much help they will most likely need over the next couple of years. After all, you do not want to go through the process of getting them settled into a community and then face another move if their needs can no longer be met.

Determine your parents’ budget, and if you need help in that area, seek advice from an elder care financial service or attorney. At MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care of Wheat Ridge, we have partnered with Elderlife Financial Services to present different financial resources commonly used to pay for senior living.

Another important step is to visit (either in person or virtually) the community and to get to know the staff. Narrowing down your choices includes considering things such as how convenient it will be for the family to visit and is it located close to medical facilities, shopping and other services. Furthermore, find out if the community is accepting new residents, and if not, you may want to go on their waiting list.

At MorningStar of Wheat Ridge, we offer a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community. In addition to assisted living and memory care, we offer respite care and short-term stays (from one week up to a full month) that are ideal to see if we are a good fit. Please contact us to learn more about exceptional senior living in Wheat Ridge, CO.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003. We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. The Top Benefits of Music Therapy in Memory Care

October 23, 2023 by Quinn A in Senior Living

A memory loss diagnosis means more than just being “forgetful.” Seniors who are struggling with memory loss or Alzheimer’s experience difficult emotions and newfound frustration. Currently, there is no cure for Alzheimer’s, which is a form of dementia that commonly impacts seniors aged 65 and up. While there may not be an accepted treatment plan for dementia, Alzheimer’s care professionals all agree that certain therapies and activities prove successful with this disease.

MorningStar Senior Living offers the best Alzheimer’s care Littleton Co has to offer seniors struggling with a memory loss diagnosis. Holistic Alzheimer’s care focuses on more natural approaches to treatment. Keep reading to explore the top benefits of music therapy in memory care for seniors seeking Alzheimer’s care and treatment.

What is Music Therapy?

Music therapy is a simple, yet effective Alzheimer’s care method that engages and soothes seniors with dementia and memory loss. It’s been shown that seniors with Alzheimer’s or dementia who regularly attend music therapy respond powerfully to activity, even in the late stages of the disease.Generally, music therapy can look like a musician coming into a senior living community weekly to play music and get seniors active and engaged in the audience. However, there are simpler methods of music therapy, as well. Memory care and music therapy are essential components of MorningStar Senior Living Littleton, CO.

Music Therapy Methods

As mentioned above, music therapy usually consists of visiting musicians. However, almost everyone has access to music wherever they go these days. Your smartphone, laptop, tablet, or T.V. are excellent sources for music therapy.

When visiting a senior in Alzheimer’s care, play one of their favorite songs for them. This act will hopefully bring back familiar memories, emotions, and feelings that are attached to the song. Not only this, but watching a music video, a musical, or a performance can stimulate the mind and encourage memories to emerge.

Find Senior Living in Des Moines With Core Values

September 27, 2023 by Quinn A in Senior Living

The senior living community you pick to live out your retirement years should have the same deeply held values that align with your comfort and safety. You can find the best senior living Des Moines has to call your future home. MorningStar Senior Living emphasizes relationships, empathy, and independence under a three-pillar mission designed by Ken Jaeger.

If you are deciding to move into senior living or assisted living, take the time to thoroughly research senior living in Des Moines that will illuminate the standards and level of care you expect while creating a spiritually loving environment.

A senior living facility should have the same morals and values you support. Ken Jaeger, Founder and CEO of MorningStar Senior Living, believed in senior care that was defined by the human touch. He looked towards his familiar roots and wanted to re-create his grandmother’s house, a place where one can go and feel a sense of family. Ken developed a three-pillar mission to keep MorningStar grounded in empathy and trust. In these three pillars, caregivers and team members of MorningStar abide by the commitment to retain strong moral values and ethics. The community commits to creating an environment that promotes healthy, engaging lifestyles while providing up-to-date security and encouraging independence.

As an entity, MorningStar’s final pillar commits to hiring and retaining employees who are
creative, selfless, and compassionate. Since its first year of service, MorningStar developed a
deep and lasting impression on its community. They are a radically relational, senior-loving
home where residents are seen as heroes. MorningStar sees its worth as more than just a
business. As a senior living facility for people aged 55 and up, Morningstar vows to create a
legacy of benevolence that changes lives.

How to Get Involved in Your Senior Living Community

September 22, 2023 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Staying social and active within your community can be difficult as we age. However, social interaction is vital for everyone’s well-being, especially seniors. Seniors not living in active senior care communities are more susceptible to social isolation. This is why seniors should be aware of the best social opportunities in senior living Des Moines has to offer.

Along with helping you navigate all the changes that come with growing older, MorningStar Senior Living and Assisted Living Des Moines focuses on your social well-being to provide mental and physical health benefits.

Recreation is important for seniors because having an active social life helps prevent depression and anxiety. Aside from all the amenities MorningStar has to offer, they advocate for community involvement by joining groups and pursuing hobbies. Sharing common interests and staying socially active makes it relatively easy to make friends at MorningStar if you want to venture out and try new things.

Would you consider yourself a bookworm? Joining a book club or starting one yourself is a great way to make new friends through a shared interest. Bonding over the discussion of books is an intimate way to get to know others. Plus, the routine of reading a book over time will keep you engaged and focused.

For seniors who prefer a physically and socially active lifestyle, joining workout classes is the right step to making new friends. Yoga, low-intensity workouts, and water aerobics are all low-risk physical activities for seniors. Joining a group like this is a safe way for seniors to keep their bodies healthy while socializing and meeting new people.

Some senior living communities have their gardens. At MorningStar, many assisted living residents enjoy tending to the garden and growing their own foods. Nurturing plants in a
collective garden has been found to give seniors a feeling of calmness and aid in a sense of
importance within the community. The group effort of growing and maintaining a living thing, such as plants, gives seniors in a retirement community the feeling of accomplishment, too!

MorningStar Assisted Living Des Moines provides high-quality care and safety assurances for seniors, making it an excellent choice for families seeking a safe and secure senior living community. With a commitment to safety, experienced staff members, and state-of-the-art safety features, you can be confident that your loved one will receive the best care possible with us at MorningStar.

Medications That Can Cause Falls

September 04, 2023 by Quinn A in Senior Living

The Harvard Medical School reports it is estimated 1 in 3 people over age 65 will fall each year, and every 19 minutes a senior dies from a fall-related injury. Statistics show women are at higher risk for a fall but men are more likely to die from their injuries than women.

Seniors should be aware of several things that can affect balance and lead to a fall. These include certain medications, inner ear problems, foot pain, weight changes and a vitamin D deficiency. Anti-hypertensive medications prescribed to keep blood pressure under control or decrease the risk of stroke and heart failure are all known to affect balance. A common side effect is orthostatic hypotension, a condition that happens if blood pressure gets too low; and results in lightheadedness, faintness and dizziness especially when the person attempts to stand from a sitting or lying down position.

Medications that suppress the central nervous system may also result in a fall as they reduce alertness, and slow reactions and movements. Some of these types of drugs include anti-anxiety medications like diazepam (Valium) and lorazepam (Ativan). Additionally, antihistamines can cause drowsiness and are used in over-the-counter sleep aids like Nyquil and Sominex, or combined with acetaminophen in products like Tylenol PM.

If you or a loved one takes medication to treat an overactive bladder or tricyclic antidepressants to help lessen chronic pain, they too can affect a person’s balance. Other drugs that increase the risk of a fall are opioids such as codeine, hydrocodone and oxycodone.

Help Reach Your Weight Goal With Portion Control

August 14, 2023 by Quinn A in Senior Living

In addition to the types of food we eat, dieticians say it is also important to pay attention to portion size when attempting to shed a few pounds as it will help us reach our goal. When trying to diet, sticking to nutrient-dense, relatively low-calorie foods such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean meats and poultry are your best choices; but no matter how healthy a food is, you still should not over consume.

This is where portion control plays a part. Amy Gorin, a plant-based registered dietitian and owner of Plant-Based Eats, a collection of curated meal plans, grocery lists and nutrition tip sheets, explains that whole foods like almond butter and dark chocolate are good for us, they should be eaten in moderation and in proper portions. In other words, the bottom-line is a large chocolate bar should not be consumed in one sitting.

However, to complicate matters, experts explain that in many cases, strictly following portion sizes suggested on the container would differ from what a registered dietician would recommend. The problem with across-the-board portion sizes is they do not address the age group, gender, and activity level of the individual person. Add to that, portion size is a critical component to losing weight especially in foods that are higher in calories.

Also eating the right amount of food helps to maintain a balanced gut. The Harvard Health Men’s Watch, suggests “a healthy gut microbiome stimulates the body’s immune system and may shield against an array of chronic diseases, including cancer, heart disease and rheumatoid arthritis.”

MorningStar at Mountain Shadows provides residents comfort, security, built-in companionship, and predictable budgeting. Our beautiful community offers assisted living and memory care with a broad range of amenities and services to meet every need including a nutritional, delicious dining service. Has a Loved One Received a Diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease?

July 19, 2023 by Quinn A in Senior Living

When a person is told they have Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia, it is extremely difficult not only for the individual but the entire family. As it generally comes after the person as well as their family and friends have noticed a marked change in the individual, it is tough to hear but not always a huge surprise. Now the question becomes “what next?”

The National Institute on Aging (NIA) offers families guidance with a list of helpful informative and supportive resources including the Alzheimer’s Association and the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. Check if they have local chapters where you can get in-person support, meet others in your same situation, and get involved in fundraising activities. You can additionally reach out to local community centers and hospitals to find out if they have Alzheimer’s educational programs.

NIA reminds families to keep up with regular medical checkups as they are important for a person with Alzheimer’s and should include their primary healthcare provider and specialists such as a neurologist, neuropsychiatrist and geriatric psychiatrist. Also, ask your medical team if there is a memory disorder clinic nearby.

Another suggestion is to plan ahead both financially and for long-term care while the person can still have some valuable input. Finally, experts say to make sure you get the proper help to ensure the person’s wellbeing and safety.

At MorningStar of Wheat Ridge, we know something about the pain and devastation families go through with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Would a Mobility Aid Help You Feel More Independent?

June 19, 2023 by Quinn A in Senior Living

If you have arthritis, heart or lung issues, pain and weakness in the feet and legs, impairment due to a stroke, visual impairment, or other balance problems, a mobility aid can help you feel more independent, reduce pain, and increase confidence. With options available ranging from canes to walkers, wheelchairs, and scooters, you may be wondering which one is best for your needs.

Experts explain that your choice of aids will depend on your disability and/or medical condition. Canes are the most common choice and are good for someone with balance problems. In fact, the journal Medical News Today, says that one in 10 adults over the age of 65 uses a cane. However, even here there are decisions to be made. While white canes are reserved for the visually impaired or blind, you may find a four-footed cane with its wider base offers more stability. If you need to shift weight from the wrist to the arm, try a forearm cane.

Walkers, also called Zimmer frames, provide stability and are used by an estimated 4.6 percent of people in the country over the age of 65. Along with the basic walker, styles include rollators that have four wheels, handlebars and a seat. Knee walkers are like a rollator but have a padded cushion to rest a knee on while the stronger leg moves it forward. Walker-cane hybrids are another option that offers better support than a standard cane.

For more severe disabilities or to move longer distances, a wide range of wheelchairs and scooters are available. If mobility problems are long-term, modifications to your home may also be necessary. Regardless of what mobility aid you decide on, doctors recommend making an appointment with your healthcare provider or physical therapist to learn how to use the new device properly.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, we have 45 private stylish suites for assisted living and another 19 suites for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. Habits That Contribute to Poor Brain Health

June 28, 2023 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Our modern-day lifestyle encourages behaviors that are bad for the health of our brain as well as other parts of our body. Research finds the following four habits are especially dangerous for cognitive health. They are sitting, lack of socializing, inadequate sleep, and chronic stress. The good news is they are habits we can easily change.

Many of our workplaces and entertainment pursuits include sitting for long periods of time. In fact, a 2018 study published in the PLOS One reports people aged 45 to 75 sit for an average of 6 1⁄2 hours a day. Researchers found “sitting too much is linked to changes in a section of the brain essential to memory.” Using MRI scans, they looked at the region of the brain known to make new memories called the medial temporal lobe (MTL). Comparing the number of hours a day the person spent sitting, those who sat the most had the thinnest MTL regions, a precursor to cognitive decline and dementia. To help improve the functioning of your MTL, the study’s authors recommend getting up and moving at least every 30 minutes. Your activity could be a quick round of squats or pushups or a walk around your front yard, or something similar for a few minutes.

Lack of socialization can also lead to a thinning of the MTL as a number of studies link loneliness to a higher risk of dementia. Experts say you don’t have to completely change your lifestyle but rather try to routinely connect with three or four family members or friends. The number of social connections is less important than the degree of meaningful interactions.

Other healthy cognitive behaviors include getting at least seven to eight hours of sleep each night and reducing your level of stress. Research shows chronic stress “can kill brain cells and shrink the prefrontal cortex, the area responsible for memory and learning.” To manage stress, experts suggest breathing techniques and practicing mindfulness.

We also offer a complement of wellness programs and activities to help residents stay engaged physically, intellectually, spiritually and socially. Seniors Can Improve Their Health With Increased Socialization

June 12, 2023 by Quinn A in Senior Living

A UCSF Division of Geriatrics study found 43 percent of seniors report regularly experiencing loneliness. Mayo clinic psychologist, Dr. Craig Sawchuk, Ph.D., explains why this can be a problem. He says as “social animals by nature; we tend to function better when we’re in a community setting and being around others.”

Several studies report a link between social isolation and an increased risk of disease, including one from the Academy of Science, which found loneliness can lead to higher rates of poor physical and mental health. Health concerns for isolated adults include hypertension, coronary artery disease, cardiac failure, depression, anxiety and Alzheimer’s disease.

It becomes harder for seniors who live alone to socialize as they get into their upper 70s or 80s as many stop driving and/or suffer from chronic health problems affecting their mobility. Other contributing issues to loneliness in the elderly may include the death of a spouse or close family members and friends.

To emphasize how important socialization is for older adults, the American Public Health Association explains the most effective way for seniors to improve their health is to increase socialization. They report “socialization improves mood, cognition, memory recall, and is associated with healthy behaviors, including exercise.”

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, our goal is to promote physical, intellectual, spiritual and social connectivity. We provide everything seniors need for quality of life and to age in place safely and comfortably. Along with luxury amenities, and care and hospitality services; our signature wellness programs and activities are designed to engage and encourage residents to live fully productive lives.

In addition to memory care and assisted living, Colorado Spring’s MorningStar at Mountain Shadows offers respite care (short recuperative stays) or trial stays (up to a full month) so you can see if we are a good fit.
