Find Senior Living in Des Moines With Core Values

September 27, 2023 by Quinn A in Senior Living

The senior living community you pick to live out your retirement years should have the same deeply held values that align with your comfort and safety. You can find the best senior living Des Moines has to call your future home. MorningStar Senior Living emphasizes relationships, empathy, and independence under a three-pillar mission designed by Ken Jaeger.

If you are deciding to move into senior living or assisted living, take the time to thoroughly research senior living in Des Moines that will illuminate the standards and level of care you expect while creating a spiritually loving environment.

A senior living facility should have the same morals and values you support. Ken Jaeger, Founder and CEO of MorningStar Senior Living, believed in senior care that was defined by the human touch. He looked towards his familiar roots and wanted to re-create his grandmother’s house, a place where one can go and feel a sense of family. Ken developed a three-pillar mission to keep MorningStar grounded in empathy and trust. In these three pillars, caregivers and team members of MorningStar abide by the commitment to retain strong moral values and ethics. The community commits to creating an environment that promotes healthy, engaging lifestyles while providing up-to-date security and encouraging independence.

As an entity, MorningStar’s final pillar commits to hiring and retaining employees who are
creative, selfless, and compassionate. Since its first year of service, MorningStar developed a
deep and lasting impression on its community. They are a radically relational, senior-loving
home where residents are seen as heroes. MorningStar sees its worth as more than just a
business. As a senior living facility for people aged 55 and up, Morningstar vows to create a
legacy of benevolence that changes lives.

MorningStar Assisted Living Des Moines provides high-quality care and safety assurances for seniors, making it an excellent choice for families seeking a safe and secure senior living community. With a commitment to safety, experienced staff members, and state-of-the-art safety features, you can be confident that your loved one will receive the best care possible with us at MorningStar.

How to Get Involved in Your Senior Living Community

September 22, 2023 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Staying social and active within your community can be difficult as we age. However, social interaction is vital for everyone’s well-being, especially seniors. Seniors not living in active senior care communities are more susceptible to social isolation. This is why seniors should be aware of the best social opportunities in senior living Des Moines has to offer.

Along with helping you navigate all the changes that come with growing older, MorningStar Senior Living and Assisted Living Des Moines focuses on your social well-being to provide mental and physical health benefits.

Recreation is important for seniors because having an active social life helps prevent depression and anxiety. Aside from all the amenities MorningStar has to offer, they advocate for community involvement by joining groups and pursuing hobbies. Sharing common interests and staying socially active makes it relatively easy to make friends at MorningStar if you want to venture out and try new things.

Would you consider yourself a bookworm? Joining a book club or starting one yourself is a great way to make new friends through a shared interest. Bonding over the discussion of books is an intimate way to get to know others. Plus, the routine of reading a book over time will keep you engaged and focused.

For seniors who prefer a physically and socially active lifestyle, joining workout classes is the right step to making new friends. Yoga, low-intensity workouts, and water aerobics are all low-risk physical activities for seniors. Joining a group like this is a safe way for seniors to keep their bodies healthy while socializing and meeting new people.

Some senior living communities have their gardens. At MorningStar, many assisted living residents enjoy tending to the garden and growing their own foods. Nurturing plants in a
collective garden has been found to give seniors a feeling of calmness and aid in a sense of
importance within the community. The group effort of growing and maintaining a living thing, such as plants, gives seniors in a retirement community the feeling of accomplishment, too!

Medications That Can Cause Falls

September 04, 2023 by Quinn A in Senior Living

The Harvard Medical School reports it is estimated 1 in 3 people over age 65 will fall each year, and every 19 minutes a senior dies from a fall-related injury. Statistics show women are at higher risk for a fall but men are more likely to die from their injuries than women.

Seniors should be aware of several things that can affect balance and lead to a fall. These include certain medications, inner ear problems, foot pain, weight changes and a vitamin D deficiency. Anti-hypertensive medications prescribed to keep blood pressure under control or decrease the risk of stroke and heart failure are all known to affect balance. A common side effect is orthostatic hypotension, a condition that happens if blood pressure gets too low; and results in lightheadedness, faintness and dizziness especially when the person attempts to stand from a sitting or lying down position.

Medications that suppress the central nervous system may also result in a fall as they reduce alertness, and slow reactions and movements. Some of these types of drugs include anti-anxiety medications like diazepam (Valium) and lorazepam (Ativan). Additionally, antihistamines can cause drowsiness and are used in over-the-counter sleep aids like Nyquil and Sominex, or combined with acetaminophen in products like Tylenol PM.

If you or a loved one takes medication to treat an overactive bladder or tricyclic antidepressants to help lessen chronic pain, they too can affect a person’s balance. Other drugs that increase the risk of a fall are opioids such as codeine, hydrocodone and oxycodone.

Help Reach Your Weight Goal With Portion Control

August 14, 2023 by Quinn A in Senior Living

In addition to the types of food we eat, dieticians say it is also important to pay attention to portion size when attempting to shed a few pounds as it will help us reach our goal. When trying to diet, sticking to nutrient-dense, relatively low-calorie foods such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean meats and poultry are your best choices; but no matter how healthy a food is, you still should not over consume.

This is where portion control plays a part. Amy Gorin, a plant-based registered dietitian and owner of Plant-Based Eats, a collection of curated meal plans, grocery lists and nutrition tip sheets, explains that whole foods like almond butter and dark chocolate are good for us, they should be eaten in moderation and in proper portions. In other words, the bottom-line is a large chocolate bar should not be consumed in one sitting.

However, to complicate matters, experts explain that in many cases, strictly following portion sizes suggested on the container would differ from what a registered dietician would recommend. The problem with across-the-board portion sizes is they do not address the age group, gender, and activity level of the individual person. Add to that, portion size is a critical component to losing weight especially in foods that are higher in calories.

Also eating the right amount of food helps to maintain a balanced gut. The Harvard Health Men’s Watch, suggests “a healthy gut microbiome stimulates the body’s immune system and may shield against an array of chronic diseases, including cancer, heart disease and rheumatoid arthritis.”

MorningStar at Mountain Shadows provides residents comfort, security, built-in companionship, and predictable budgeting. Our beautiful community offers assisted living and memory care with a broad range of amenities and services to meet every need including a nutritional, delicious dining service. Has a Loved One Received a Diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease?

July 19, 2023 by Quinn A in Senior Living

When a person is told they have Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia, it is extremely difficult not only for the individual but the entire family. As it generally comes after the person as well as their family and friends have noticed a marked change in the individual, it is tough to hear but not always a huge surprise. Now the question becomes “what next?”

The National Institute on Aging (NIA) offers families guidance with a list of helpful informative and supportive resources including the Alzheimer’s Association and the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. Check if they have local chapters where you can get in-person support, meet others in your same situation, and get involved in fundraising activities. You can additionally reach out to local community centers and hospitals to find out if they have Alzheimer’s educational programs.

NIA reminds families to keep up with regular medical checkups as they are important for a person with Alzheimer’s and should include their primary healthcare provider and specialists such as a neurologist, neuropsychiatrist and geriatric psychiatrist. Also, ask your medical team if there is a memory disorder clinic nearby.

Another suggestion is to plan ahead both financially and for long-term care while the person can still have some valuable input. Finally, experts say to make sure you get the proper help to ensure the person’s wellbeing and safety.

At MorningStar of Wheat Ridge, we know something about the pain and devastation families go through with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Our Reflections Neighborhood is staffed by a dedicated, compassionate team and provides a safe, loving home for seniors suffering from dementia. Would a Mobility Aid Help You Feel More Independent?

June 19, 2023 by Quinn A in Senior Living

If you have arthritis, heart or lung issues, pain and weakness in the feet and legs, impairment due to a stroke, visual impairment, or other balance problems, a mobility aid can help you feel more independent, reduce pain, and increase confidence. With options available ranging from canes to walkers, wheelchairs, and scooters, you may be wondering which one is best for your needs.

Experts explain that your choice of aids will depend on your disability and/or medical condition. Canes are the most common choice and are good for someone with balance problems. In fact, the journal Medical News Today, says that one in 10 adults over the age of 65 uses a cane. However, even here there are decisions to be made. While white canes are reserved for the visually impaired or blind, you may find a four-footed cane with its wider base offers more stability. If you need to shift weight from the wrist to the arm, try a forearm cane.

Walkers, also called Zimmer frames, provide stability and are used by an estimated 4.6 percent of people in the country over the age of 65. Along with the basic walker, styles include rollators that have four wheels, handlebars and a seat. Knee walkers are like a rollator but have a padded cushion to rest a knee on while the stronger leg moves it forward. Walker-cane hybrids are another option that offers better support than a standard cane.

For more severe disabilities or to move longer distances, a wide range of wheelchairs and scooters are available. If mobility problems are long-term, modifications to your home may also be necessary. Regardless of what mobility aid you decide on, doctors recommend making an appointment with your healthcare provider or physical therapist to learn how to use the new device properly.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, we have 45 private stylish suites for assisted living and another 19 suites for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. Our residents enjoy healthy, delicious meals served all day in our full-service dining room, luxury amenities, wellness programs and built-in companionship. Habits That Contribute to Poor Brain Health

June 28, 2023 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Our modern-day lifestyle encourages behaviors that are bad for the health of our brain as well as other parts of our body. Research finds the following four habits are especially dangerous for cognitive health. They are sitting, lack of socializing, inadequate sleep, and chronic stress. The good news is they are habits we can easily change.

Many of our workplaces and entertainment pursuits include sitting for long periods of time. In fact, a 2018 study published in the PLOS One reports people aged 45 to 75 sit for an average of 6 1⁄2 hours a day. Researchers found “sitting too much is linked to changes in a section of the brain essential to memory.” Using MRI scans, they looked at the region of the brain known to make new memories called the medial temporal lobe (MTL). Comparing the number of hours a day the person spent sitting, those who sat the most had the thinnest MTL regions, a precursor to cognitive decline and dementia. To help improve the functioning of your MTL, the study’s authors recommend getting up and moving at least every 30 minutes. Your activity could be a quick round of squats or pushups or a walk around your front yard, or something similar for a few minutes.

Lack of socialization can also lead to a thinning of the MTL as a number of studies link loneliness to a higher risk of dementia. Experts say you don’t have to completely change your lifestyle but rather try to routinely connect with three or four family members or friends. The number of social connections is less important than the degree of meaningful interactions.

Other healthy cognitive behaviors include getting at least seven to eight hours of sleep each night and reducing your level of stress. Research shows chronic stress “can kill brain cells and shrink the prefrontal cortex, the area responsible for memory and learning.” To manage stress, experts suggest breathing techniques and practicing mindfulness.

MorningStar of Wheat Ridge assisted living and memory care community provides a full range of care and hospitality services and luxury amenities. We also offer a complement of wellness programs and activities to help residents stay engaged physically, intellectually, spiritually and socially. Seniors Can Improve Their Health With Increased Socialization

June 12, 2023 by Quinn A in Senior Living

A UCSF Division of Geriatrics study found 43 percent of seniors report regularly experiencing loneliness. Mayo clinic psychologist, Dr. Craig Sawchuk, Ph.D., explains why this can be a problem. He says as “social animals by nature; we tend to function better when we’re in a community setting and being around others.”

Several studies report a link between social isolation and an increased risk of disease, including one from the Academy of Science, which found loneliness can lead to higher rates of poor physical and mental health. Health concerns for isolated adults include hypertension, coronary artery disease, cardiac failure, depression, anxiety and Alzheimer’s disease.

It becomes harder for seniors who live alone to socialize as they get into their upper 70s or 80s as many stop driving and/or suffer from chronic health problems affecting their mobility. Other contributing issues to loneliness in the elderly may include the death of a spouse or close family members and friends.

To emphasize how important socialization is for older adults, the American Public Health Association explains the most effective way for seniors to improve their health is to increase socialization. They report “socialization improves mood, cognition, memory recall, and is associated with healthy behaviors, including exercise.”

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, our goal is to promote physical, intellectual, spiritual and social connectivity. We provide everything seniors need for quality of life and to age in place safely and comfortably. Along with luxury amenities, and care and hospitality services; our signature wellness programs and activities are designed to engage and encourage residents to live fully productive lives.

In addition to memory care and assisted living, Colorado Spring’s MorningStar at Mountain Shadows offers respite care (short recuperative stays) or trial stays (up to a full month) so you can see if we are a good fit. Companion Living Available at MorningStar of Wheat Ridge

May 19, 2023 by Quinn A in Senior Living

MorningStar of Wheat Ridge recognizes that for some, assisted living can seem out of reach for them financially, which is why we strive to help families find ways to make it affordable. One of the solutions we offer is “Companion Living.” This is where two unrelated people of the same sex share a suite, whether in assisted living or memory care.

Obviously, it is ideal if you have a relative, friend or acquaintance that is looking for the same type of situation and you can pair up to share a suite with them. However, we know that option is not always available, so we step in and help find a suitable companion for you. We carefully pair residents together based on common backgrounds and interests as that provides a good basis for building a friendship. With this living arrangement, the rent of the shared suite is split.

Beyond the financial advantage, companion living can help ease the transition to a senior living community. The presence of a roommate can encourage more confident socialization with the broader community, and having someone around who knows the ropes is always helpful. Also, you can look out for one another’s interests and most likely be the first one to notice a change in the other’s health or abilities. As we all know, when a friend is present, everything else suddenly feels that much better.

MorningStar of Wheat Ridge offers residents an engaged lifestyle that includes a wide range of programs and activities as well as nutritional daily meals. Our many onsite amenities include a bistro, theatre/chapel, massage room, salon, fireside patio, and a fully equipped fitness room. If you are looking for a community with an exceptional care team along with amenities and services unmatched by other senior living communities, please visit our website to learn more about MorningStar.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003. We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. The Cost-Effective Benefits of Personalized Senior Care

April 24, 2023 by Quinn A in Senior Living

If you are considering assisted living for yourself or for a loved one, you should choose a facility that prioritizes personalized and individualized care. At MorningStar assisted living in Des Moines, Iowa, we are proud to offer personalized and individualized care to our residents. We believe that this approach is not only the most beneficial in terms of overall health and wellness, but it's also the most cost-effective in the long run. By focusing on each resident as an individual, we're able to provide targeted care and support that is tailored to their specific needs and goals.

One of the primary benefits of personalized and individualized care for seniors in assisted living is that it allows staff members and managers to tailor their approach to meet each resident's unique needs. Rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach to care, our team at MorningStar works with each resident and their family to develop a care plan that is specific to their needs and preferences. This can include everything from assistance with daily tasks to specialized care for medical conditions.

By focusing on personalized care, we're able to help our residents achieve better health outcomes. This is because we're able to address their specific needs and provide targeted care that is designed to help them achieve their goals. Whether it's improving mobility, managing chronic conditions, or simply maintaining good health, our staff is here to provide the support and care that our residents need to succeed.

Another benefit of personalized and individualized care is that it can save you money in the long term. By providing targeted care that addresses specific needs, we're able to prevent health problems from worsening or developing in the first place. This means that our residents are less likely to require costly hospitalizations or other medical interventions down the road. Not adopting the one-size-fits-all approach to senior care, also means that you aren’t paying for any additional services that you or your loved one isn’t in need of.

MorningStar Assisted Living Des Moines provides high-quality care and safety assurances for seniors, making it an excellent choice for families looking for a safe and secure senior living community. With their commitment to safety, experienced staff members, and state-of-the-art safety features, you can be confident that your loved one will receive the best care possible. Do not hesitate to look into MorningStar Senior Living for your parent or loved one and experience the peace of mind that comes with knowing your loved one is in good hands.

Fatty fish like salmon, tuna, and mackerel are some of the best foods for those with Alzheimer's. These types of fish are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which have been linked to improved brain health and cognitive function. Are You Caring for an Elderly Loved One?

April 10, 2023 by Quinn A in Senior Living

If you have become responsible for more and more of the caregiving duties of an elderly parent or another loved one, it may be time to consider a change.  Today’s senior living options include assisted living that provides daily help with personal care, and actually helps residents regain their sense of independence.  Also once your loved one is getting the proper care they need, it allows you to get back to just enjoying the time you spend together.  Moreover, assisted living communities like MorningStar at Mountain Shadows provide much more than just physical care.  Along with a wealth of amenities, activities and services, it is designed to feel like a real home.

Our priority is to ensure your loved one gets the care they need.  This starts with a thorough evaluation of their medical and personal history, followed by a care plan approved by you and your parents.  MorningStar’s services also help our families by providing transportation to doctor appointments as well as offer scheduled physician visits and supportive services from third-party providers including skilled nursing care, physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy.  Residents have the opportunity for plenty of socializing and are encouraged to participate in a range of activities and wellness programs.  While this is not a substitute for the time your loved one spends with family, you may find your parents are not always available to take your call as they are busy having fun with other residents and staff.

Our services also include providing housekeeping to help ensure residents’ homes are tidy and clean.  By taking care of meals, we see to it your loved one gets the daily nutrition they need.  Moreover, meals are served restaurant-style in our lovely dining room as we believe breaking bread together provides far more than physical nutrients but bonds us as family and friends.  We also offer assistance with another common problem many seniors experience when living alone, which is forgetting to or improperly taking medications.  We solve this by offering medication management services.

Please contact us for more information about MorningStar’s senior living in Colorado Springs.  Our community offers 45 stylish suites for assisted living and 19 secure studios devoted to the individualized care of residents with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.  We look forward to hearing from you.

Safe Driving Practices for Older Drivers

March 17, 2023 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Older drivers can still be good, safe drivers, but there are some things to consider both for your safety and the safety of others.  The Mayo Clinic recommends that seniors stay as active as possible in their day-to-day life which helps to maintain overall strength, flexibility, and range of motion.  Drivers need to be able to turn and look over their shoulder and move their head with ease.  They must be able to keep a firm grip on the steering wheel and legs need to be strong enough to apply pressure to the gas pedal or brake.

A senior’s peripheral vision can decrease with age or from certain medications and other eye problems may cause drivers to have trouble seeing in the dark or experience blurred vision.  Hearing problems can interfere with detecting sounds of sirens from emergency vehicles or approaching cars.  Be vigilant about scheduling vision and hearing tests regularly as part of your wellness care and follow your doctor’s advice as to how often they should be done.  Many problems can be corrected if caught early enough.

Remember that certain medications can cause drowsiness so make sure you know the side effects of your prescription drugs and do not drive if you are feeling sleepy.  It may be a good idea to limit trips in the car to daylight hours and when the weather is good.  Keep in mind that a person’s reaction time slows with age as do their motor skills.  You may need to re-evaluate your driving every few months, especially if you find yourself having incidents of accidents that almost happened.

The MedicineNet website has some safe driving tips for seniors:

Planning before you leave:

  • Plan to drive on streets you know.

  • Limit your trips to places that are easy to get to and close to home.

  • Take routes that let you avoid risky spots like ramps and left turns.

  • Add extra time for travel if driving conditions are bad.

  • Don't drive when you are stressed or tired.

While you are driving:

  • Always wear your seat belt.

  • Stay off the cell phone.

  • Avoid distractions such as listening to the radio or having conversations.

  • Leave a big space, at least two car lengths, between your car and the one in front of you. If you are driving at higher speeds or if the weather is bad, leave even more space between you and the next car.

  • Make sure there is enough space behind you. (Hint: if someone follows you too closely, slow down so that the person will pass you.)

  • Use your rear window defroster to keep the back window clear at all times.

  • Always keep your headlights on.

For exceptional senior living, we encourage you to consider MorningStar of Wheat Ridge, the perfect home to age in place comfortably and safely.  Our broad range of services and amenities include all-day restaurant-style dining, scheduled transportation, fitness center, wellness programs and activities to promote a healthy lifestyle for residents.
