Get Involved in Your Senior Living Community Through These Clubs

September 14, 2022 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Your retirement community might have everything you’ve been searching for in a senior living facility. The abundance of healthy and exciting food options, group activities and outings, and beautiful surroundings both inside and out certainly make senior living in these environments enjoyable. However, many seniors who have moved into a retirement home will still come to miss their friends and family members. One way to combat this loneliness and build connections with new people in the community is to start or join a club.

A book club is a fun and enriching way to get involved in your senior living community and keep your mind healthy. Bonding over the discussion of books is an intimate way to get to know others. Plus, the routine of reading a book over a course of time keeps seniors comfortable and encourages a sense of purpose and excitement.

A gardening club is a fun and active way to get to know people, too. Nurturing plants in a collective garden has been found to give seniors a feeling of calmness and aids in a sense of importance within the community. The group effort of growing and maintaining a living thing such as plants gives seniors in a retirement community the feeling of accomplishment when the long-awaited seed sprouts into fresh blooms.

For those interested in maintaining or reaching their fitness goals, participating in a workout group is a smart way to stay motivated and hold yourself accountable at the gym. Not only does this help with quality bonding time, but it is a safe way for seniors to keep their bodies healthy. Having others be available in the gym can be there in the case an accident happens, or to deter an accident from occurring.

MorningStar’s senior living actively looks for holistic techniques and creative activities to promote the well-being of seniors in their community. MorningStar at Jordan Creek offers modern retirement homes in Des Moines IA as well as assisted living with resort-style amenities such as a gym, community garden, and an elegant library all free for residents to use.

Music Bridges the Gap in Memory Loss

August 24, 2022 by Quinn A in Senior Living

We all have a unique relationship with music; our tastes in music genres, favorite lyrics, and memories specific to us become associated with certain songs. Music is a huge part of our culture; there is an understanding that music is deeply rooted in our conscious and unconscious brains. This makes music, and music therapy, a valuable tool in Alzheimer’s care that helps to better understand and relieve some of the effects of dementia and other types of cognitive loss in the brain.

Music awakens the brain and a rich supply of memories that are associated with familiar songs or beloved pieces begin to expose themselves. Published in The Journal of Prevention of Alzheimer’s Disease, "objective evidence from brain imaging shows meaningful music is an alternative route for communicating with patients who have Alzheimer's disease."  These findings mark a significant step toward music therapy as a holistic method in communication with dementia care patients.

It is revolutionary the way music unlocks memories in the brain. Music therapy is also a great way to calm or soothe a patient in memory care. Classical music avoids overstimulation of the brain, and the absence of lyrics helps to not confuse the individual. The best advice with music therapy is to pay attention to your loved one's response to certain songs or compositions. Their nonverbal communication can help you understand their preferences.

As specialists in memory care, MorningStar’s Senior Living in Littleton, Co is aware of the mental pain and frustration that is associated with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or other memory loss diseases. Regardless of the barrier within your loved ones' memory loss, they continue empathetic communication with their residents struggling with memory loss and do not shy away from difficulties. Incorporating holistic methods of care and treatment enhances the overall health and happiness of seniors in Alzheimer's care.

How Seniors Can Satisfy a Sweet Tooth

August 24, 2022 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Major changes happen to our taste buds as we age, and we may find ourselves unable to taste flavors as intensely as we once could. By the time we surpass 55 years of age, our taste buds begin to reduce. The average young adult has about 15,000 taste buds, whereas seniors, on average, lose over 50% of their taste buds. This frustrating olfactory change may be why our food cravings fluctuate as we get older and may answer why seniors gravitate towards more sugary foods. Try these foods to satiate your sweet tooth while also providing your body with essentially nutrients and minerals.

Sugar is much easier for our taste buds to detect than savory or salty foods. Not to mention, sugar causes our brains to release dopamine which generates pleasure throughout our bodies. However, large amounts of sugar can greatly impact a senior’s health. MorningStar Senior Living in Des Moines, Iowa, believes that through a proper diet and healthy choices, food is a healing medicine unlike any other. Our executive chefs prioritize the use of ingredients known to support overall health by their high concentrations of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory compounds.

Dark chocolate seems to always be the solution to any pesky sweet tooth. Did you know, dark chocolate with a high cocoa mass (over 70% cocoa), improves concentration and stimulates the production of endorphins for an uplifting mood lift? This makes dark chocolate a heart-healthy, antioxidant treat. Just make sure you’re reaching for dark chocolate that refrains from large amounts of added sugars.

A fruit smoothie is a great option for seniors. Smoothies are easy to consume and often easy to digest. We suggest creating a smoothie full of dark berries like blue, black, and acai. These “brain berries” contain anti-inflammatory properties and mega antioxidants which inhibit the damaging movement of free radicals in our body and add more sweetness than citrus.

Whatever your food preferences, MorningStar’s executive chefs are sure to prepare you a tempting dish that stimulates the senses. Dining is just one aspect of MorningStar’s signature wellness program, which thoughtfully creates daily opportunities for social, intellectual, spiritual, and physical health, all of which contribute to brain and whole-body vitality.

Seniors Benefit from Stretching Exercises

August 19, 2022 by Quinn A in Senior Living

If you are a senior who is having difficulty turning your neck to look behind you when driving, having problems getting up from a low chair or difficulty picking something up from the floor, you may find adding stretches to your routine can really improve these types of motions. Stretching exercises also help seniors improve flexibility and balance, both of which lower a person’s risk of falls and injuries. Experts explain stretching gives seniors a better range of movement in their joints, helps improve posture, increases circulation and releases muscle tension and soreness.

The Journal of Gerontology reported on the results of a 12-month stretch and flex program for older adults. It found “participants demonstrated positive changes in areas like physical fitness, self-efficacy, perceived functioning, and well-being. They also experienced a decrease in pain.” Along with the favorable benefits stretching provides, it can be done anywhere and does not require any special equipment. However, before beginning any new exercise routine, be sure to consult with your healthcare provider regarding your fitness level and the type of stretches most appropriate for you.

Another thing to remember is it is important to warm up before stretching. Experts say it can be doing something as simple as a walk around the block. Additionally, they warn not to stretch to the point of pain, only to the point of tension. A stretch can typically be held for 30 seconds, but do not bounce when you stretch.

Amazing Benefits of Art Therapy for Dementia

July 27, 2022 by Quinn A in Senior Living

When an individual starts portraying symptoms of memory loss or Alzheimer’s, often communication is a noticeable change that caretakers and family members first notice. When typical forms of communication diminish, such as speech, people may wonder how their loved one will be able to communicate with the world around them. Seniors with Alzheimer’s or dementia often enjoy and benefit from creative activities like art that give the opportunity for non-verbal expression and communication. Art therapy is a common activity in senior living and Alzheimer’s care as this holistic method of care has been seen to boost mood, stimulate the brain, and help with overall quality of life.

Art therapy encourages personal passion and helps to activate memory and familiarity. The idea of art therapy is to not overwhelm the individual struggling with dementia, but to encourage their independence and free creativity. Safe art projects that are on an adult level can create a sense of accomplishment and purpose. As is known, there is currently no cure for dementia or Alzheimer’s but there are activities to help curb symptoms and enhance happiness. For these reasons, forms of art therapy and other holistic methods of self-exploration are highly utilized at senior living facilities and in Alzheimer’s care, such as at MorningStar of Littleton, Colorado.

At MorningStar of Littleton, we feel it is our privilege as well as our calling to serve those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Our philosophy and approach to care is encompassed under the expanse of possibilities we call “Lavender Sky.”  Using holistic methods such as music, art, dance, aromatherapy, and animals, we thoughtfully “enter, embrace, and explore” the world of dementia.  Regardless of the extent of the memory loss, we know the essence of the person remains, and our job is to connect with and nurture that essence as we put our energies toward finding ways to celebrate and elevate life.

If your loved one is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia, please contact MorningStar of Littleton to learn more about our Alzheimer’s care or senior living in Littleton, Co. Unlike many memory care communities, our home was designed to promote independence and to give residents the freedom to safely explore their spacious surroundings. Our staff are trained to give loving, experienced care from the onset of the disease to its advanced stages.

MorningStar of Littleton proudly provides the very best in assisted living and memory care with our unique mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.” With a foundation built on honoring God, valuing all seniors, and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve, we create a true home for residents amid a beautiful setting. At MorningStar of Wheat Ridge, Our Goal is to be the Best We Can!

July 14, 2022 by Quinn A in Senior Living

At MorningStar of Wheat Ridge, our first and foremost priority is to give residents the finest quality of life possible by offering a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and security. Recognizing seniors as heroes, we acknowledge all of the triumphs and challenges they have faced throughout their lives and consider serving them to be our life’s calling – our privilege. Thus we feel honored to receive praise regarding our home and our care from residents and their families. The following are a few examples.

One daughter of a resident recently wrote in a Google review that she cannot speak more highly of the care her mother is receiving at MorningStar of Wheat Ridge. She adds, “The staff is coordinating continuous care. They are loving and conscientious. They are responsive to my Mom’s needs and requests from our family. MorningStar WR is going far beyond providing care. They are doing whatever it takes to keep Mom safe, comfortable, and happy. Our family is most appreciative.”

In another Google review, a daughter describes her experience with MorningStar. She writes, “We have had such a positive experience at MorningStar of Wheat Ridge. From the very beginning, the staff has been attentive to my dad's needs, and have kept in touch regarding his care.  The staff is kind and friendly. The community offers many services from in-house medical providers to regular social events for the residents. I have such a peace of mind knowing that my dad is in such good hands.

A son tells his journey with his parents over the last several years in his Google review. He says, “Morningstar of Wheat Ridge is outstanding. I looked at many facilities in the Denver area before we settled on Morningstar of Wheat Ridge for my parents, and I am so happy with our selection. The facility is beautiful, clean, and well maintained. The staff is passionately caring and helpful, the food is great. Chad, the executive director, is very down to earth and practical. He has done a great job in keeping the facility safe and well staffed during the pandemic. My parents moved into assisted living there in early 2019. When they needed memory care the staff moved them to the memory care wing during the pandemic. My parents were both in hospice there at the end and passed away one year apart in their room. I spent many days and nights there with my parents and observed, first hand, the care, dedication, and kindness of the staff. I am very grateful to have found Morningstar of Wheat Ridge and happy to give them a resounding endorsement.”

MorningStar of Wheat Ridge is conveniently located in a northern suburb of Denver, and we offer a choice of 45 private assisted living suites with spacious floor plans.  In addition, our Reflections Neighborhood has 19 suites devoted to the individualized care of residents with memory impairment.  Contact us or visit our website to learn what makes our community special and why our residents are happy to call MorningStar “home.”

Creative Activities Improve the Well-being of a Person with Alzheimer’s

June 28, 2022 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Activities that enrich the mind and encourage playfulness can reduce negative behaviors and symptoms that are associated with Alzheimer’s like wandering, agitation, frustration, sadness, or restlessness. Introducing regularly planned activities helps propel a sense of belonging and a sense of self that may have felt lost previously. Over time, continual practice and participation in an activity can induce feelings of mastery and comfort among individuals struggling with memory loss.

No two people show symptoms of Alzheimer’s in the same way. The needs of a person living with Alzheimer’s change, sometimes daily and sometimes hourly. In this way, treating every person with Alzheimer's, in the same manner, is not beneficial. Specialized and individualized care must be introduced when handling individuals with memory loss needs. It is important to find the different activities that appeal to each person, and not to assume that everyone enjoys the same things. Getting to know residents, regardless of their communication disabilities, is an important step to learning which creative pursuits will ultimately bring them the most joy.

At MorningStar in Littleton, Co, our senior living that also specializes in Alzheimer’s care takes the time to understand our residents in a holistic approach that we call “Lavender Sky.” Through this approach, creative activities are introduced that are specialized with each specific resident in mind. While we do offer many group activities such as music or art therapy, we also strive to find the other special things that light up our residents dealing with Alzheimer’s. Usually, these are things that the person participated in throughout their life and is the most familiar to them. Sometimes that includes helping to decorate sweets, participating in daily chores, or completing puzzles together. Doing the activities they find most exciting in regular intervals brings a sense of peace, familiarity, and completion to our residents’ lives.

To learn more about our specialization regarding Alzheimer’s care and senior living in Littleton, Co, please contact us. It is Important to Incorporate Stretching Exercises Into Your Routine

June 17, 2022 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Health professionals say it is important to incorporate stretching exercises into your routine especially the older we get as our flexibility naturally decreases. As joints become stiff, and tendons and ligaments tighten up, we become more susceptible to injuries as well as chronic pain and poor posture. In fact, studies show men’s flexibility drops sharply at around 70 years of age.

Stretching exercises are easy to learn, relatively easy to do, and should not take more than five to ten minutes. Urvashi Chogle, a physical therapist at Harvard-affiliated Spaulding Rehabilitation Network, says the shoulders, hips, knees, and spine lose the most flexibility.  He explains, "This makes many everyday movements more difficult, such as reaching overhead, squatting, twisting, and bending over."

Of course before you begin any new stretching exercises, you need to consult with your healthcare provider. He or she may have suggestions on how to safely get started or direct you to your local community senior center or other organizations for classes. Additionally, the Internet has a lot of information on how seniors can improve their flexibility with stretching exercises done in a chair, standing up, or if you can, on the floor. Regardless of your level of fitness, these exercises should help improve your range of motion, flexibility and joint stiffness.

At MorningStar of Wheat Ridge, we offer seniors a carefree lifestyle to safely age in place with a range of care services, luxury amenities, wellness programs and activities. Our programs include a range of exercise classes such as chair yoga, gentle stretching and others to help keep you moving. Our community has 45 stylish assisted living suites with a choice of spacious studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floor plans. In our Reflections Neighborhood, we have 19 secure memory care suites devoted to the individualized care of those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. Please contact us or visit our website for more information.

MorningStar’s “Lavender Sky” Teaches How Connection is Still Possible With an Alzheimer’s Diagnosis

June 17, 2022 by Quinn A in Senior Living

In our senior living facility within Littleton, Colorado, we see the devastation that comes with an Alzheimer’s diagnosis. Often, family members and close friends deal with high levels of grief and even anger in regard to this diagnosis of their loved one. It is difficult to watch someone so close to you change and often feel unrecognizable. Through MorningStar’s holistic approach to memory care, “Lavender Sky,” it can be seen that the personality of the person that you knew and loved may still be able to maintain a relationship regardless of their memory loss.

Cassidy Jones, an employee of MorningStar, started out as a server and quickly progressed to a concierge within our facility. Here, she met one of the residents staying in Memory Care, Elsie. Jones felt such a high calling to befriend Elsie and visits her whenever she is working. Watching Jones and Elsie, you can feel the joy radiating between them as they communicate in what looks like gibberish to the outside world. Jones tells us that Elsie began speaking a repetitive statement to her in a foreign language. When translated, Jones discovered that Elsie had been saying “I love you.”

Although Jones may not understand what Elsie is saying at all times, this sweet nugget of communication can be seen as a breakthrough in relationships of individuals dealing with Alzheimer’s and symptoms of memory loss. Jones states that she has fun communicating with Elsie and “jumping into that world is incredible.”

The jump that Jones describes echoes our mantra within “Lavender Sky” of exploration within a memory loss diagnosis, such as Alzheimer’s. Embracing the diagnosis allows caretakers to expand their knowledge and understanding of what it means to have Alzheimer’s and what we already feel we do understand changes every day. Through a “Lavender Sky,” we can fully “enter, embrace, and explore” the world of dementia, memory loss, and Alzheimer’s together. In doing so, we can connect more with our residents and provide better, personalized care in an extraordinary way.

While Jones’ story is unique, it is not singular. To learn more about “Lavender Sky” and the other specialized care regarding Alzheimer’s and memory loss, please contact us. Our staff is happy to answer any questions you have and our website also provides information on our company’s history, vision, and mission as well as what sets us apart from other senior living facilities in Littleton, Colorado.

Learn More About Memory Loss

June 15, 2022 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Many of us have been embarrassed by forgetting someone’s name when we unexpectedly run into them or missing an appointment. The Medical News Today (MNT) describes short-term memory as the brain systems involved in storing information for short periods, usually up to about 30 seconds. Short-term memory typically holds about seven pieces of information at a time. Our long-term memory is where old memories are stored.

Experts remind seniors not all problems with memory loss are caused by Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia but rather some are age-related or caused by outside factors. One example is sleep as research shows lack of sleep interferes with short-term memory and is vital to memory consolidation, which is the process of preserving key memories and discarding excessive or irrelevant information. Drinking too much alcohol and using recreational drugs also interfere with memory consolation; and overtime can cause irreversible damage to both short and long-term memory.

Other issues that cause memory loss can be medications (check with your doctor), infections such as Lyme disease, urinary tract infections (UTI), and organ failure, such as liver failure. Even a small amount of hearing or vision loss can interfere with a person’s ability to take in and process new information. Experts say once the problem is solved such as with hearing aids, memory problems should improve.

Chronic cardiovascular problems like hypertension and high cholesterol impair blood flow to the brain, leading to a condition called vascular dementia. Depression, anxiety, chronic stress and post-traumatic stress disorder additionally have the potential to cause memory problems but typically go away once the underlying problems are resolved. For any of these various reasons, it is important to consult with your healthcare provider if you are having memory problems as it could be treatable.

At MorningStar, our goal is to provide the finest senior living in the Wheat Ridge area, which includes specialized care to those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. Every aspect of our Reflections Neighborhood caters to our most tender residents with purposeful activities, trained caregivers, food service, and security. Family Orientated Fathers Day Ideas for Dads Living in Assisted Care

June 13, 2022 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Father’s Day falls on Sunday, June 19th this year.  If your special father figure is in assisted living rather than at home, it may seem difficult to come up with ideas to celebrate him this year. Instead of helping in the usual strenuous yard work, throwing an elaborate barbecue, or planning a fishing trip, show the dad in your life appreciation through spending some much-needed relaxing family time from the ideas below.

Senior living doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate Dad the same way you may have been accustomed to. Assisted living facilities, such as MorningStar in Des Moines IA, offer colorful and unique living arrangements and community involvement that keeps your father’s life full and enriched while continuing to keep him safe and healthy. Celebrating Father’s Day at MorningStar is special because family is what makes that day important.

He will be overly enthusiastic to introduce you to all his friends and neighbors as they have spent much time getting to know each other in the full-service dining room, getting some sun on the patio, or walking in the exercise room.

Spend time together listening to his favorite music albums. One thing parents appreciate is reminiscing on their earlier lives. Bringing some of their favorite music to play in their suite is one way to open them up and remind them of happy memories that they can share with you. If you have children, letting them dance with grandpa is sure to spark joy in the whole family.

Bring in dinner from their favorite restaurant to share as a family. A Healthy Diet for Those Over 50

May 16, 2022 by Quinn A in Senior Living

The government first published nutritional recommendations in 1941, which became known as the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDAs).  At the time, recommendations were more concerned with ensuring the population “as a whole was adequately fed and free from scurvy, rickets and other wartime diseases of malnutrition.”  These early guidelines did not address long-term issues such as heart disease and diabetes.

Since then, we have learned we need to focus on maintaining good nutritional habits well into our senior years to avoid or mitigate our risk for chronic diseases.  One example is type 2 diabetes, which occurs when the body’s muscle, fat and liver cells stop responding well to insulin resulting in consistently high blood sugar.  Doctors say type 2 diabetes can be caused by too much sugar and refined-carbohydrates in our diet, and to lessen our risk, we should maintain a healthy weight and minimize blood-sugar spikes as well as add more fiber to our diet.

Another thing an older adult should be aware of is muscle loss.  Along with resistance training, weightlifting, Pilates, and yoga, nutritionists say to maintain strength we need to include protein in our diet.  Christine Ritchie, director of research for the division of palliative care and geriatric medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, says older adults’ diet should include more protein than when they were younger.  A man in his 50s needs “about 25 to 30 grams at each meal (like a medium chicken breast or burger, a 5-ounce can of tuna mixed with mayo, 2 cups of cooked rice and beans, or a cup of low-fat cottage cheese).”

Government dietary guidelines report that we burn approximately 200 fewer daily calories after age 50, so if you keep eating like you did in your thirties or forties, you will probably gain weight.  Also, as bone loss starts sometime in our early thirties and continues into old age, seniors should consume foods with calcium and vitamin D. The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons recommends 1,200 milligrams a day of calcium for women and 1,000 mg for men.  Additionally, eat fruits and vegetables in a bright range of colors for heart-protecting antioxidants.

At MorningStar of Littleton, we recognize that good nutrition is especially important to the wellbeing of seniors. Our meals are prepared largely from scratch and feature the freshest ingredients from high-quality producers, locally sourced when possible.  Our beautiful home offers 65 stylish suites for assisted living and another 20 suites devoted to the individualized care of residents with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.  Visit our website to see what sets our community apart from other senior living Littleton, CO offers and why our residents are happy to call MorningStar “home.”

Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth with Healthier Options

May 02, 2022 by Quinn A in Senior Living

The U.S. News and World Report published an article on tasty treats designed to satisfy your sweet tooth and provide a healthier alternative to more sugar laden desserts. One suggestion from board-certified oncology dietitian, Kailey Proctor, of the Leonard Cancer Institute at Providence Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, California, is to grill pineapple, banana, apple or pear slices. Grilling concentrates flavors by reducing the water content, and further sweetens the fruit as natural sugars are caramelized by the heat.

Dark chocolate is a known powerful source of antioxidants as research shows it can help improve blood flow, lower blood pressure, and raise HDLs, reducing your risk for heart disease. One healthy, easy-to-make dessert is to melt dark chocolate and spread it over parchment paper. Then sprinkle dried cherries, chopped nuts or sunflower seeds over it; refrigerate for five minutes and cut into small pieces. Another variation is to dip fresh strawberries or other fruit into melted dark chocolate.

Yogurt parfaits are fun to put-together and can be customized to your taste. Using a parfait dish or small bowl, add granola, strawberries, blueberries, nuts, peanut butter or seeds, layering with yogurt. To cut down on fat, use nonfat or low-fat yogurt as it still provides a good source of protein without the calories.

How about banana ice cream made from frozen pureed bananas mixed with almond milk? If you like, add in peanut butter and nuts. Sprinkle some cinnamon on top, which is “thought to have anti-inflammatory effects and may help diabetics manage their blood sugar levels.”

How Prices are Structured at MorningStar of Littleton

May 02, 2022 by Quinn A in Senior Living

At MorningStar of Littleton, we regularly have questions about our community from area seniors and their family members.  FAQs include how our pricing is structured as well as availability.  In assisted living, fees are based on the level of care a resident requires.  For memory care residents, we offer all-inclusive pricing, which means suite rental and care, whatever the level of need, is one price.

To calculate your level of need in assisted living, you and your family will meet with our Wellness Director and go over your medical history and personal preferences to create an individualized care plan.  This sets the basis of your Care Level (we have five) and your monthly fee accounts for the costs and time to provide the needed services.  These can include help with daily personal care activities (grooming, bathing, toileting, etc.) and medical assistance.

If you are concerned the cost of assisted living may be too high for your means, we want to remind you that senior housing can be very cost-effective as there are many things you will no longer pay for out-of-pocket.  This includes the costs of your monthly utilities.  At MorningStar your monthly fee includes cable TV & utilities, laundry facilities, and three daily meals prepared under the direction of our Executive Chef.  In addition, we have scheduled transportation every week for rides to medical appointments as well as transportation to organized activities and cultural events.

Assisted living residents also have access to a full-time licensed nurse and our loving 24-hour care staff.  Our wellness programs and activities engage and support our residents’ mental, physical, spiritual and social connections for a healthier, fuller life.

MorningStar’s mission is to provide the best senior living Littleton, CO offers, and the comfort and wellbeing of our residents are the foremost considerations for everything we do.  Our dedicated team, the heartbeat of our community, delivers service that represents the mission and philosophy of MorningStar Senior Living - honoring God and valuing seniors as gifted and contributing individuals. Please visit our website for more information.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. Helping a Loved One Transition to an Assisted Living Community

March 25, 2022 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Many times, a move to assisted living for an elderly loved one is due to an event such as a recent hospitalization for a fall or a worsening medical condition. This means the person does not have the time to process the move from a beloved home, and the sudden change may be very upsetting. Even for seniors who have had the time to plan a move into assisted living, it may be challenging.

At MorningStar of Wheat Ridge, we know the many benefits assisted living communities such as ours afford to residents; but at the same time, we recognize any change is difficult and moving into assisted living is certainly one of those events. In addition to our own experience, experts also offer suggestions to families on how best to support their loved one during the transition.

It may ease the transition for the person to get as familiar as possible with the new community and staff before the move.  Also, after a decision is made, let your loved one decide what furniture and keepsakes they want to move with them and help them decorate.   If possible, arrange furniture and decorations in a similar way and display photos and other keepsakes to make the new place feel like “home.”

Keep in mind the person may feel abandoned, or frustrated with their perceived loss of independence and decision making, and have a hard time adjusting to a change in their routine. Give the person plenty of support during the first days and weeks at the community, but don’t overdo it. This could actually be counterproductive and prevent a loved one from making an adjustment. Instead, emphasizing the move is an opportunity to start a new chapter in their life.

In some cases, seniors make a quick adjustment and recognize the advantage of no longer worrying about their homes’ maintenance or preparing meals. They like the ease of a more robust social life and feel a peace of mind knowing help is around whenever they need it. For others it may take a little more time.

In addition to assisted living, MorningStar of Wheat Ridge offers individualized memory care, respite care (short recuperative stays) or trial stays (from a week to a full month) to see if we are a good fit.  Please visit our website for information on our company’s history, vision, and mission as well as what sets us apart from other seniors living in Wheat Ridge, CO.

Finding the Right Care for a Loved One with Dementia

March 21, 2022 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Searching for memory care for a loved one that suits the person’s needs as well as the family’s is challenging at best. Knowing the person is dependent on getting the level of care they need for both their wellbeing and safety makes choosing the right home essential. Experts say start by taking your time to think about your loved one’s needs including daily personal care required such as dressing, toileting, bathing, etc. as well as any on-going medical needs.

Additionally, do they have mobility issues and use a wheelchair or a walker; or do they need assistance eating? If the person is known to wander, you will want a secure home to keep him or her safe including alarms on the doors. Another thing experts say is to let the community know if the person is prone to angry outbursts or other aggressive behaviors.

Once you have a good idea of your loved one’s needs, now consider if the homes you are looking at are equipped to handle those needs. Ask about living arrangements, dining service, and the level of daily help the person will receive. Moreover, does the community offer exercise programs and other meaningful activities?

Now inquire about the homes’ experience with Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia, and the training the staff has in dementia care. What is the home’s philosophy of care and how do they approach difficult situations such as aggressive behaviors? Most of all does the staff seem caring and do residents appear to be content and well-looked after?

Along with assisted living, MorningStar of Wheat Ridge offers 19 suites devoted to the individualized care of residents with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. Every aspect of our Reflections Neighborhood is geared toward residents’ care from meaningful activities, trained caregivers, food service, and security. Please visit our website to learn more about senior living, our staff and our approach to memory care.

Quality of Life is Diminished if Seniors Don’t Get the Care They Need

March 21, 2022 by Quinn A in Senior Living

Most seniors wish to maintain their independence as long as possible by living on their own; and this is why many who encounter problems in their day-to-day lives are reluctant to tell their families. The problem with this is as a senior starts to have more difficulty caring for themselves, their quality of life can be greatly diminished.

Even if mom or dad seem to be doing well on their own, experts say a rapid decline in their health from an accident or illness can catch families by surprise and make living on their own dangerous. In addition, many health conditions affect musculoskeletal, neurological, circulatory or sensory systems and impact a senior’s ability to perform the activities of daily living (ADLs). Experts say other factors indicating a need for more help include social isolation, medication side effects and the physical characteristics of the person’s home such as a second floor bedroom. If after implementing a series of home modifications is not adequate, more measures need to be taken to keep your loved one safe.

Experts explain unmet ADLs can lead to serious health problems including “malnutrition, poor personal hygiene, isolation, illnesses like urinary tract infections (UTIs) and falls. In fact, studies show ADL disabilities are associated with an increased risk for mortality; and taking care of daily needs can help prevent new and worsening health problems.” They also report if family members notice a decline in a loved one’s overall health, taking steps now can improve their safety and forestall further problems. One solution is to make a move to an assisted living community, where a person can live as safely and as independently as possible. To ensure needs are met, homes use the ADLs as a measure of a person’s functional performance.

MorningStar of Littleton is a beautiful community with 65 assisted living suites offering residents’ peace of mind knowing compassionate help is readily available whenever they need it. We also have 20 suites devoted to the specialized care of residents with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.  For trusted senior living Littleton, CO families can count on, visit our website or contact us for further information.
