Assisted Living Provides an Environment for Seniors to Thrive

February 21, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Way too often people have misconceptions about senior living communities and specifically assisted living. They think of the nursing facility where their grandparents may have spent their last years and don’t want to put themselves or an older loved one into something like that. After all, haven’t we all earned a happy retirement?

Today’s assisted living communities are just that – a community. They provide an engaged lifestyle, safety and the proper support a person needs to help maintain their independence. Many also offer resort-style amenities like all-day, full-service dining; housekeeping, fitness centers, salons, bistros and in-house theatres and chapels to give seniors a vibrant community to safely age in place.

Furthermore, many older adults living alone say they feel socially isolated and lonely, which can put them at an increased risk for depression, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and more. When seniors move to an assisted living community such as MorningStar of Wheat Ridge, they have opportunities to engage in wellness programs, activities and special events. Examples from MorningStar’s monthly calendar include Fitness with Forrest, Indoor Walking Club, Short Stories Book Club, Trivia W/ Professor David, Live Music with Steve Clement, Creative Crafters: Tote Bag Designs, Bible Study and more. Seniors also find it easier to eat healthy as they no longer need to shop, prepare, cook and clean-up meals.

Another reason assisted living can make sense is that seniors find their current home requires expensive modifications to make it safe for them. Throughout MorningStar’s community, the physical environment is designed to help residents stay safe and prevent falls. Suites are equipped with handicapped-accessible bathrooms and 24/7 emergency call systems; and have lots of lighting and large windows. Dedicated care managers are always available to lend a hand when needed, and provide compassionate help with the ADLs (activities of daily living).

To learn more about MorningStar’s assisted living in Wheat Ridge, Colorado and whether it is the right decision for you or a loved one, we encourage you to contact us to set up a tour. We look forward to hearing from you.

Cost Considerations of Senior Care Options

February 19, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

An article in the US News & World Report finds moving mom or dad to an assisted living community may be a bargain compared to paying for extensive in-home care. With an average cost of $25 to $27 an hour, in-home care can add up fast. For example, if you want someone with mom or dad while you are at work nine hours a day for five days a week, you are already spending $4,500 or more a month. This still leaves your parents without support on the weekends, and doesn’t include any support for problems which may occur during the evening and overnight.

An assisted living community includes room and board and housekeeping services as well as a variety of wellness programs and activities. It also has 24/7 staffing and suites with emergency call systems, handicapped-accessible bathrooms and other modifications.

If a family feels assisted living would be the best place for a parent but the cost is holding them back, experts say to thoroughly research all available payment options. This can include long-term care insurance and some private health insurance; or social programs such those offered by Veterans Affairs or Social Security Disability Insurance. A San Francisco based executive VP for A Place for Mom, Sue Johansen, suggests families consult with a financial advisor or a trust attorney.

Remember, once you find the assisted living community you want, ask about the difference in pricing regarding room size or floor plan, and/or location in the community (view, balcony, etc.). You will need to factor in annual increases so be sure to ask what those have been over the last couple of years. Also, does the community require a deposit, move-in fee or community fees; and what type of notice does your parent need to give to move out?

At MorningStar Assisted Living of Wheat Ridge, we are happy to answer all your questions. To get you started, our website offers lots of details regarding suites, activities and amenities as well as a whole list of answers to FAQs. If you like what you see, contact us to set up a tour to see firsthand our beautiful community.

Keep Your Brain Sharp With Games and Puzzles

February 14, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

While there is a long-held belief that memory loss and aging are inevitable, it is now known we can help keep our brains sharp. Studies have shown our brains continue to build new connections, and engaging in activities that challenge us can lead to sustained brain development and offer new ways to approach challenges.

The most effective puzzles and games linked to a reduced risk of dementia are those requiring critical thinking, problem-solving and memory recall. Patrick Porter, Ph.D, a neuroscience expert and founder of BrainTap, explains “These activities stimulate the brain by challenging it to find patterns, make connections, and think creatively. They require mental flexibility and encourage the brain to adapt and reorganize neural networks, enhancing cognitive reserve.”

To get the most benefit from mental activities, the experts say it is best to vary the type of games we play. Shifting from games that rely on speed, rapid decision making or memory help strengthen and tap into multiple ways to engage the brain. Studies show it is important to keep challenging ourselves and pushing the bar toward more difficult activities. Another thing to keep in mind are the studies linking socialization to a decrease in dementia. So before you jump on the computer for some brain games, think about gathering a group of friends to play a game of trivia or piece together a puzzle.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, we offer outstanding assisted living in Colorado Springs. Suites are available in a variety of contemporary floorplans which are equipped with a handicapped-accessible bathroom, emergency call system and private heating and cooling. We provide residents comprehensive care services along with luxury amenities, wellness programs and activities to enhance quality of life. Watch for Signs of Illness When Caring for a Person With Alzheimer’s Disease

February 12, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Caring for a person with Alzheimer’s disease can be a time-consuming job. As the disease is progressive and symptoms worsen over time, the person’s needs also evolve. Things they used to do for themselves may no longer be possible or safe. Moreover, experts say like many older adults, a person with Alzheimer’s is likely to experience health changes over time. Therefore, it is important he/she continues to get routine checkups with their primary care physician as well as with any specialists they may be seeing.

The National Institute on Aging (NIH) says some of the problems caregivers should look for are signs of fever, or sickness like the flu or pneumonia. They say a fever could be signs of infection, dehydration caused by lack of fluids, heat stroke or even constipation. When taking a person’s temperature, use a digital thermometer rather than a glass one as the person might bite down on the glass and break it. Let their doctor know right away if they do have a fever. To help prevent serious illness from flu or pneumonia, have the person get a yearly flu shot and a pneumonia vaccine if recommended.

Dehydration can occur in people with Alzheimer’s as they may forget to drink fluids throughout the day. Caregivers should look for signs of dry mouth, dizziness and rapid heart rate. Experts say dehydration can even cause hallucinations; however, they are also a symptom of Alzheimer’s disease.

As the disease progresses, the person will most likely need help brushing their teeth. It is important to look for any sores in the mouth or oblivious signs of dental problems.

NIH cautions caregivers to be on the lookout for signs of pain as the person may not have the ability to tell you. They recommend watching the person’s face for outward signs of pain, or sudden changes in their behavior such as yelling or striking out. If you are not sure what is happening, call their doctor for help.

Along with assisted living, Colorado Springs’ MorningStar at Mountain Shadows offers 19 suites for residents with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Our loving community is staffed by a team of individuals who understand the unique needs of each resident and deliver that care with compassion and thoughtfulness.  Please visit our website or contact us for more information.

How Assisted Living Supports Independence with Peace of Mind

February 05, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Many seniors fear their lack of independence when they think about aging and relocating to senior living. While this is a very serious concern and deserves to be treated with compassion, it is important to note that modern senior living communities have greatly evolved from what we might consider nursing homes or senior hospital facilities. Thanks to the dedication and research of many passionate senior care providers, senior living communities are more supportive than ever before. Assisted living communities provide support to seniors that enhances both independence while giving families a peace of mind.

Personalized Care Enhances Autonomy

Personalized care is developed for each individual at MorningStar based on their specific needs, preferences, health concerns, medications, abilities, and passions. Personalized care is individualized and custom-made, this ensures that each resident is receiving the correct level of care specific to them. By providing individualized care, seniors experience more independence and autonomy while feeling supported to explore the things they’re passionate about in the safety of their assisted living home.

Seniors can begin to feel suffocated and infringed upon when they are forced to participate in routines, activities, or methods that don’t align with their needs or healthcare. Similarly, seniors can experience neglect when a community is not satisfying their needs completely. At MorningStar, our managers are dedicated to creating the best personalized care plan for each resident. These plans can also be adjusted over time, with many check-ins and follow-ups.

A Safe Environment with Freedom

Seniors should always enjoy their independence, but their safety should be a top priority, too. MorningStar Assisted Living provides seniors with high-quality care and safety assurances, making it an excellent choice for families looking for a safe and secure senior living community. With their commitment to safety, experienced staff members, and state-of-the-art safety features, you can be confident that your loved one will receive the best care possible while exploring and enjoying their retirement.

Is Mom or Dad Doing Well Living Alone?

February 03, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

If you noticed a change in mom or dad or another loved one during a recent visit from out of town, you are not alone. Experts say when families spend time together after a prolonged separation many adult children realize their parents are not doing as well as they thought they were living on their own.

Some of the most obvious signs a parent is having problems caring for him or herself is an unintended loss of weight, change in grooming habits or signs of a fall. The ADLs or Activities of Daily Living are used by experts to evaluate the needs of a person and include personal care such as bathing, dressing and toileting as well as transferring (ability to get in and out of bed or chair), continence and eating.

Other important signs a person is no longer doing well on their own and could benefit from some sort of assistance are based on what experts call the Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs). These include things like paying bills, taking care of their home, preparing and cooking meals, being able to get out of the home, and socializing.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows we offer assisted living and memory care. Our assisted living is designed to provide the services residents need to maintain their independence with 24/7 care managers, medication management, access to licensed nurses and more. Moreover, all residents are treated to a delicious, healthy restaurant-style dining service, wellness programs and activities, and sponsored community outings and events.

Our beautiful home has assisted living suites in a range of floor plans including studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom.  In addition, we offer respite care, (short recuperative stays) or trial stays to see if we are a good fit.  For outstanding senior living in Colorado Springs, we encourage you to consider MorningStar.

Embrace Support and Independence in Assisted Living

January 29, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Everyday tasks can be really overwhelming for seniors struggling with health concerns or symptoms of memory loss. Unfortunately, there is a lot of stigma surrounding senior living homes. This stigma stems from misinformation. Modern senior living communities are active and dynamic spaces for seniors to enjoy. Negative ideas about senior living communities can prevent seniors from exploring positive environments where they can receive the support they need.

MorningStar Senior Living in Des Moines redefines assisted living for seniors. Here’s how we can partner together to change the narrative around assisted living to celebrate all the benefits it has to offer.

Recognizing the Signs

The first step in getting your loved one the care they need is recognizing any changes in their behavior or personality. Aging tends to bring natural changes in memory, mobility, and health that can make certain daily tasks more difficult. This can cause normal everyday things to fall by the wayside. Remain attentive to any of the following changes so that you can identify when your loved one needs help:

  • A lack of fresh food in the house

  • Overfilled trash or clutter

  • Unpaid bills or unchecked mailbox

  • Missed doctors appointments or empty pill bottles

If you are noticing these signs, it may be time to have an honest discussion with others about how to address these challenges in an empathetic way with your loved one.

Independence and Assisted Living

Needing help doesn’t mean losing independence. Seniors can adapt to life’s changes while still preserving dignity and freedom in assisted living. At MorningStar residents experience a balance of independence and support with personalized care plans and tailored activities with on-site care managers on stand-by if necessary.

Seniors Enjoy these Benefits in Assisted Living

January 27, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Finding the right senior living community means finding the right space where seniors feel comfortable, cared for, and at home. For many seniors, companion living provides the perfect balance of support and companionship. At MorningStar Senior Living in Des Moines, seniors can share their retirement experience with a spouse, close friend, or another trusted individual while receiving personalized care and attention from trusted staff.

Shared Apartments in Senior Living

Companion living at MorningStar is great for couples to continue sharing their lives together in their own suite filled with their cherished belongings and memories. For those interested in living with a friend or another family member, there are options for a bit more space that is great for mutual support and connection. Shared suites and apartments in senior living provide a sense of familiarity and comfort which helps to ease the transition into assisted living.

Companionship with a Purpose

While trusted senior living communities provide the best living care possible, it’s always great to have someone near that seniors can trust and rely on. This is why companion living isn’t just ideal for sharing space, but it’s a great way to extend care and support to one another. A trusted companion or spouse will often know your behaviors and routines better than anyone else. This makes it easy to identify any changes or health concerns early on.

A Vibrant Retirement Community

Beyond the benefits of companion living, MorningStar Assisted Living Des Moines offers a vibrant community filled with opportunities for social engagement and enrichment. Residents can enjoy a wide range of activities, including fitness classes, group outings, and social events, all designed to promote connection and well-being. The Move to an Assisted Living Community is a Big Life Change

January 27, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

No matter how old we are, change can be challenging. For seniors who have had just that much more time to get used to the way things are, a change in the status quo can be difficult. When faced with a change in lifestyle and residence, a person may mourn what they perceive as a loss of their independence and younger self, and the loss of a home filled with a lifetime of memories. However, regardless of how we long to keep things the same, change is a fact of life; and for many seniors, life could be better with a little daily help.

When mom or dad would benefit from the many services offered by an assisted living community, there are a few things families can do to help ease the transition. To start with, senior care specialists recommend making the effort to set up mom or dad’s new suite with familiar, well-loved furnishings and mementos rather than buying all new things.

Another important step toward a smooth transition is to give it time. Experts say it generally takes anywhere from three to six months to adjust to community life, but in some cases, residents settle into it quickly. If your parent is one to make a slow adjustment, remember why the move was necessary in the first place including a real concern for their safety and well-being as well as your need for peace of mind.

Some experts say it may be helpful to limit your visits and phone calls to allow your parent some time to find their own way. Also, if they want to vent about how unhappy they are, give them some space to do so. Validating their feelings can help them work through their fears and uncertainty about the changes they are experiencing.

At MorningStar of Wheat Ridge, our team is experienced in helping new residents feel at home and we work with both them and their family to help with the transition. Our beautiful community offers luxury amenities, wellness programs and activities designed to enhance quality of life. Contact us or visit our website for more information about outstanding assisted living or memory care at MorningStar.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. The Move to MorningStar at Mountain Shadows

January 22, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

No matter what age we are, moving can be a big deal. Whether as a high schooler changing schools, or a retiree embarking on a new chapter to an assisted living community, moving is a big deal.

For older adults, a move to assisted living may include giving up a beloved family home. In this case, they probably have a whole house full of things and will need to downsize. That alone can be tough, as the person will most likely need to give up possessions they have had for years. For more on downsizing, the Internet offers a variety of suggestions to help you get started.

The MorningStar at Mountain Shadows team understands every resident’s move is unique and recognizes it for what it is – a major lifestyle transition. This is why we approach each move-in with the utmost sensitivity, and sincerely strive to nurture a good relationship right from the start. We seek to reinforce the positive aspects of community life, and do all we can to help the person embrace their new adventure.

Once your family decides assisted living at MorningStar is a good fit, we request a deposit to secure your chosen suite. From there our “House to Home” process begins in earnest. This includes getting together vital information, agreements and permissions inherent to the move such as a medical assessment and a physician’s plan of care, along with other documentation.

Practical advice from us includes recommending moving companies experienced in senior transitions. Furniture carts and dollies are available to borrow, if needed. We also offer packing tips and suggestions on the best items to bring. Most importantly we keep the lines of communication open as we know it is vital to a satisfactory experience.

MorningStar at Mountain Shadow’s assisted living in Colorado Springs is designed to support and engage residents’ mind, body and spirit. Our wide array of amenities, care services, wellness programs and activities help nurture residents’ independence for the best quality of life. In addition, our beautiful community offers specialized memory care in our Reflections Neighborhood for those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and other memory impairments.  Please contact us or visit our website for more information about exceptional senior living at MorningStar.

Reduce Your Risk of Falls

January 20, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Many of us have heard about or know a senior who has had a fall that led to a serious injury. Each year statistics report one out of every five falls causes an injury, such as broken bones or a head injury; and approximately 3 million older adults are treated in emergency departments for a fall injury. Falls resulted in over 38,000 senior deaths in 2021.

The Harvard Medical School reports the highest risk factor for a fall is a previous fall. While a senior may have fallen or tripped and not thought much about it, as they only twisted an ankle or didn’t sustain a serious injury, the event may be a precursor to another fall.

There are things seniors in assisted living can do to protect themselves from a fall and it starts by being aware of any risk factors you may have including vision and hearing problems, which can make a fall more likely. Experts say stiff joints can hamper your gait and balance and make it easier to fall, as do certain medications for blood pressure and antihistamines. As a deficiency in vitamin D decreases a person’s bone mineral density and strength of the bones, it too can cause instability and raise the risk for a fall. Experts report even something as unrelated as a head cold or the flu can cause dizziness and increase your risk.

To help boost core strength and improve balance, talk to your healthcare provider about the best type of exercises to do. Other steps to decrease the likelihood of a fall are to keep moving to loosen stiff joints and help build strength, wear sensible shoes and remove home hazards. Finally make sure your home has plenty of good lighting.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, our community is designed to accommodate our residents’ every need and to see to their comfort as well as their safety.  Each of our suites is equipped with a 24-hour emergency call system and handicap-accessible bathroom. We also recognize the importance of exercising, and as such, provide a full calendar of activities that includes a variety of exercise programs.  Visit our website for more information about MorningStar’s assisted living in Colorado Springs.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. The Basics of Medicare

January 15, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

If you recently had a medical procedure or were hospitalized, you may be confused about a recent bill and are wondering what Medicare will cover, what your gap insurance will cover, and what you will be responsible for. It may help to have a better understanding of the four main parts of Medicare.

Part A helps pay for inpatient stays in hospitals and skilled nursing facilities, some home care and end-of-life hospice care that accept Medicare. Hospital services covered include a semi-private room and meals, general nursing, drugs and supplies, inpatient rehabilitation, and some blood transfusions. Skilled nursing services include care for things like recovering from hip replacement surgery or stroke. Part A charges a deductible for hospital stays (the fee for 2025 is $1,676) but your Medigap insurance may cover that expense as well as other deductibles. Hospital stays for up to 60 days and virtually most services are covered by Medicare; but the one exception is not in a private room.

Part B covers doctors and outpatient services, and together with part A make up what is considered “Original Medicare.” Part B pays for diagnostic screenings, lab tests, preventive services, some medical equipment and transportation. It covers doctor visits and other outpatient services. There is a monthly premium with Part B, and in 2025 it is $185. For those making over $106,000 annually it may be higher.

Part C is what Medicare Advantage comes under, and is privately held insurance rather than Medicare, which is run by the federal government. If you choose Medicare Advantage, you will still need to sign up for Medicare part A and B and pay the premium for part B. Medicare Advantage plans set their own deductibles and you typically need to stay in a Network and use your plan’s approved providers or pay higher out of pocket costs.

Part D is again from a private insurer and pays for some of your prescription drugs. Generally there is a co-pay for each prescription, and you may have a premium, and a yearly deductible. Check with Medicare regarding rules for higher yearly drug costs and your responsibility.

Remember Medicare offers an open enrollment period each year to allow recipients to make changes to their plan. The period starts on October 15 and ends December 7. Any changes you make during this time will go into effect the following year.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, our 55+ community offers luxury assisted living in Colorado Springs with a variety of floor plans, onsite amenities, wellness programs and activities. Myths About Over-the-Counter Medication

January 13, 2025 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Medical professionals worry far too many people do not use over-the-counter (OTC) medications according to stated directions. The most commonly used OTC medications are for pain management, allergy treatments and to reduce the symptoms of flu.

US News & World Report conducted a survey in March 2023 of more than 350 pharmacists nationwide from chain, independent and hospital pharmacies regarding their views on patients’ compliance with OTC drugs. The results showed 9 out of 10 pharmacists agreed consumers believe too many myths about OTC medications.

The list of some of the most commonly-held misconceptions includes:

  • It’s okay for children to take adult OTC medications as long as the doses are reduced.

  • It’s okay to double-dose OTC medications when I forget a dose.

  • Natural or organic supplements are safer than other OTC medications.

  • The bathroom is a good place to store OTC medications.

  • It’s okay to take OTC medications after their expiration dates.

  • It’s okay to cut, crush or chew OTC pills.

  • Brand name OTC medications or products are clearly better than their generic versions.

Debunking the first item, experts explain it is not okay to give infants and young children adult medications as they need smaller doses that are best measured using appropriately designated formulations. They remind the public there are many medications designed specifically for children. Hanna Phan, clinical associate professor at the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy in Ann Arbor, Michigan, says, “Substituting adult forms, which are often tablets or capsules, can be inaccurate and may increase risk for medication errors, such as overdose.”

Other myth busting information in assisted living is to store OTC drugs in a dry, cool spot as recommended for prescription medications. Pharmacists do say it is probably okay to take an OTC a few months after the expiration date; but much longer and the active ingredients may have lost their effectiveness. Also, they say for the most part generic versions of a product are as good as a brand name one. Another warning is to not double up on a medication even when you miss a dose. Moreover, just because something is labeled as organic doesn’t mean it is always safe for you to take. Rather check with your doctor in assisted living.

Making Lasting Friendships in Assisted Living

December 23, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Seniors can often feel anxious before moving into assisted living. For many, they have spent their life up to this point living on their own, with a loved one, or with their families. It can be intimidating to start this new chapter. But, you don’t have to do it alone.

Join Community Activities and Events

Events are another way you can meet new people. Holidays and other community celebrations are a great excuse to mingle with your neighbors and get to know our wonderful staff. Living with Alzheimer’s Disease

December 16, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

While a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s for yourself or a loved one is hard to hear, it is important to become informed because what we do early on can help guide future decisions. The Alzheimer’s Association is a great resource to become familiar with and offers topics ranging from Alzheimer’s symptoms to caregiving and medical breakthroughs. It is also one of the biggest fundraising organizations and supports the “Walk to End Alzheimer’s” and the “Longest Day” activities.

Experts say it is important to remember you are not alone. Over six million people in the US are living with Alzheimer’s and millions more know someone with the disease. Although everyone experiences the disease in their own unique way, understanding the major stages of the disease helps families navigate this unexpected journey.

Alzheimer’s five distinct stages include: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI); Mild; Moderate; Severe; and Very Severe. Symptoms can vary from person to person but the various stages of Alzheimer’s disease have some common characteristics and it helps to be prepared.

To help negate the feeling of being a complete victim of your circumstances, studies show there are lifestyle changes you can make in the early stages to help improve brain health. These include exercising and eating a healthy diet as well as avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. This is also the time to think about future financial, medical and legal decisions.

The early stages are additionally the time to build a support network and to stay engaged with friends and family. Get in the habit of using memory aids such as sticky notes or digital aids for your appointments and activities. If you find you are getting confused paying bills, keeping track of medications or having a hard time making appointments, ask for help.

Be sure to keep up with all your medical appointments including adding an Alzheimer’s specialist to your healthcare team. Ask your doctors about local organizations and services that may be helpful to you and your family now and later.

Along with assisted living, Colorado Springs’ MorningStar at Mountain Shadows has 19 suites devoted to the care of those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Our holistic care is individualized for each resident and designed to stimulate or calm in response to a particular mood or situation.  Each day is filled with activities that incorporate music, dance, art, aromatherapy, or animals to heal and comfort residents.  Visit our website for more information about our compassionate, loving memory care.

Assisted Living Provides Seniors a Vibrant and Supportive Environment

December 13, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Way too often people have misconceptions about senior living communities and specifically assisted living. They think of the nursing facility where their grandparents may have spent their last years and don’t want to put themselves or an older loved one into something like that. After all, haven’t we all earned a happy retirement?

Today’s assisted living communities are just that – a community. They provide a productive lifestyle with social interactions, safety and the proper support a person needs to help maintain their independence. Many also offer resort-style amenities like all-day, restaurant –style dining; housekeeping, fitness centers, salons, bistros and in-house theatres and chapels to give seniors a vibrant community to safely age in place.

Furthermore, many older adults living alone say they feel socially isolated and lonely, which can put them at an increased risk for depression, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and more. When seniors move to an assisted living community such as MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, they have opportunities to engage in wellness programs, activities and special events. Examples from MorningStar’s monthly calendar include Empower Me Exercise, Chair Yoga, Scenic Drive, Tea and Trivia, Holiday Card Making, Flower Arranging, Poker Club, Board Games and more.

To learn more about MorningStar’s assisted living in Colorado Springs and whether it is the right decision for you or a loved one, we encourage you to contact us to set up a tour. We look forward to hearing from you.

Treating Hearing Loss May Reduce the Risk of Developing Dementia

December 11, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

JAMA Neurology added to the growing body of evidence showing a link between hearing loss and cognitive impairment. The study found treating hearing loss with hearing aids may reduce the risk of developing dementia by up to 19%. In fact, researchers say hearing loss may be the biggest treatable factor for dementia. An article in AARP explains what may cause the link between hearing loss and dementia.

The first theory regards socialization. Scientists say once a person starts having more difficulty being in a group of people and following the conversation, they may avoid such social gatherings. This in turn can lead to isolation, which is problematic as less social engagement as well as less cognitively stimulating activities and depression are risk factors for dementia.

Secondly, coping with hearing loss means the person is constantly working to sort out sounds and make sense of what is being said. The brain now may have “fewer resources (brain power) to help preserve thinking and memory abilities.” Scientists also believe hearing loss causes the brain to be less stimulated with sound information, which is linked with parts of the brain shrinking and atrophying faster with chronic deprivation.

While experts agree we still need more studies regarding the link between hearing loss and a higher risk for dementia, they do know that addressing a hearing issue with hearing aids is beneficial for the person’s overall quality of life. Moreover, there are no negative medical issues associated with the devices.

MorningStar at Mountain Shadows is a senior community offering assisted living residents a broad range of amenities and services.  In addition, we provide care to those living with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia. Some Lifestyle Habits Can Increase Your Risk of Developing Arthritis

December 02, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Many people assume arthritis comes with aging, but experts say while joint pain is common in older adults, arthritis is not a normal part of aging. The CDC explains arthritis is a group of more than 100 conditions causing inflammation and swelling in the joints or nearby tissues with symptoms such as pain and stiffness. Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis and mostly occurs in older adults (about 70% are 55 years and older). Other common types of arthritis are rheumatoid arthritis and gout.

While there is not a cure for arthritis, there are treatments, medications and therapies. In addition, studies find healthy lifestyle habits can help manage symptoms of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout as well as lessen your risk for even getting it. For example, the CDC reports 40% of people with arthritis can decrease pain and improve function by being physically active.

Osteoarthritis is the breakdown of the cartilage of the joints causing bones to rub against one another resulting in pain and difficulty moving the joint.  Experts say millions of cases could be prevented by avoiding excessive weight gain. Exercising regularly and doing resistance training is another way to avoid injury to the joints.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic condition causing inflammation and swelling in joints. It can misshape, misalign and damage joints; and if it is in one knee or hand, it is typically on the other hand or knee. Recommendations to reduce your risk for RA include avoiding tobacco. Gingivitis, or gum inflammation, is linked to several health conditions including RA; and prevention includes improving oral health with good hygiene and dental visits.

Gout is another common form of arthritis and occurs when crystals of uric acid are deposited in one or more joints. People with gout experience pain, swelling and redness in the affected joints. Experts say eating a healthy diet, limiting alcohol, and staying well hydrated are good steps to reduce your risk. If you are overweight, lose weight and if possible avoid diuretics (discuss all medication changes with your doctor). Studies show regardless of what type of arthritis you have, early diagnosis and treatment can make a big difference in your future joint health.

Breaking the Stigma Around Assisted Living

November 27, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Sadly, there is often a stigma attached to needing help. This is especially true for seniors. As we age, everyday tasks can become more challenging, which can often make seniors feel frustrated and overwhelmed. Due to the stigma surrounding assisted living senior communities, elders may resist transitioning to a home that can provide them with more care and help. MorningStar at Jordan Creek in Des Moines redefines what assisted living means for many seniors and their families. Keep reading to see how you can help break the stigma around assisted living.

Recognize the Signs for Help

Certain daily tasks can become overwhelming as we age. Changes in memory, mobility, or health can make completing errands and tasks difficult. However, it is important to notice the signs that a loved one may require more assistance than they’re letting on:

  • Spoiled food in the fridge

  • Piles of trash around the house

  • Unpaid bills

  • Missed doctor’s visits

If you notice these signs, it may be time or an honest conversation about exploring assisted living options.

Encourage Independence

Needing help doesn’t mean losing independence—it simply means adapting to life’s changes. At MorningStar Senior Living in Des Moines, seniors can maintain their dignity while receiving the support they need through:

  • Around-the-clock Care Managers on site

  • Various levels of assistance for daily living activities

  • A holistic and contemporary environment that promotes safety and comfort

MorningStar redefines senior living by offering care that enhances a senior’s independence rather than diminishes it.

Have Open Conversations

For seniors who may still feel anxious about needing help, approaching the topic of assisted living can be challenging. Remember to remain calm and empathetic. Encouragement and honesty go a long way in breaking the stigma around aging. When discussing senior living options, be respectful and transparent about their safety and well-being. Reassure them that needing help is a normal part of aging and that you will be there with them every step of the way.
