Specializing in compassionate care delivered by our distinguished team and guided by our proprietary program “Radiance,” we know the highest expression of living is when we are fully engaged in sharing with others our talents, time and energy.

Planning Your Next Visit to a Loved One in Assisted Living

August 09, 2023 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Especially on birthdays and holidays, many of us wish to brighten the day for a loved one in an assisted living community by letting them know they are very special to us. To help make our visit more meaningful, experts provide some tips to keep in mind when we visit.

You may want to plan in advance an activity your loved one would enjoy doing with you during your visit. Examples include bringing along a puzzle to work on, a Scrabble board or a trivia game. You could get prints of current photos of the family made to add to an album or start a new one. If they are a music lover, bring some new music to enjoy together. If they enjoy listening to stories, get an audiobook to listen to or buy a favorite family movie to watch together. If they like sending greeting cards to family and friends, buy a box of cards and help get them ready to mail. If they get pleasure from being pampered, bring along the supplies to give them a manicure.

If the weather is cooperative, take advantage of the community’s outdoor area to soak up the sun or take your loved one to a local park and plan to share a simple meal of sandwiches and a drink. Bringing your kids along automatically provides a more cheerful energy and will give the resident pleasant memories long after the little ones have gone home. However, do keep in mind that too many visitors at a time can be hectic and it may be better to spread out the visits.

If you do want to bring gifts, remember the person most likely does not have a lot of extra room for anything too big. Gifts of food are generally welcomed and can be shared with others in the community. Other tips include not visiting when you are ill, and be sure to wash your hands when you first come in to avoid spreading germs.

At MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care at Mountain Shadows, we provide lots of activities and programs for our residents, but we know they always look forward to seeing their family. Our community has beautiful and inviting common areas to enjoy with visiting family and friends. For assisted living Colorado Springs seniors can count on, we encourage you to consider MorningStar, the perfect community to age in place comfortably and safely.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003. We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. Have You Used the Internet for Medical Information?

August 07, 2023 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Let’s be honest, many of us rely on the Internet for medical advice. While it can supply good answers, doctors also caution you have to be careful what sites you trust. There are many websites providing good medical information but there are also sites with misleading or even dangerous advice.

Dr. Michael Langan, an internal medicine physician at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, cautions anyone with a blog can dispense information and advice; and a good way to avoid misinformation is to ask your doctor to recommend the sites they trust. Additionally, the National Institute on Aging recommends using health websites sponsored by Federal Government agencies. They say a good place for reliable, up-to-date information is the National Institutes of Health, but at the same time, remind everyone that the Internet is no substitute for seeing your doctor or other health professional who can give you advice that caters to your specific situation.

Other things to look for include name recognition such as the Mayo Clinic or the Cleveland Clinic. Moreover, remember sites that end in .gov, identity U.S. government agencies; .edu, educational institutions; and .org, usually designates nonprofit organizations (such as professional groups; scientific, medical, or research societies; and advocacy groups). A .com is a commercial site.

The NIH says to look for the date of the information (often can be found at the bottom of the page) and see if the authors and contributors are identified. If the author is listed, what is his/her background and what is their goal in writing the article or the intent of the organization it is written for. Is there any financial motive for the information? Check out the About Us or Contact Us pages as they provide background information about the organization.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows in Colorado Springs, we promote a healthy, engaged lifestyle, while providing comfort and security. Our beautiful home has 45 stylish assisted living suites with a choice of floor plans. In addition, 19 secure suites in our Reflections Neighborhood are devoted to caring for those with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Join a Book Club this Summer!: How Reading is Beneficial for Senior Wellness

July 21, 2023 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Reading, as we all know, is an excellent source of relaxation. However, no one is likely reading enough these days. Reading engages the mind and keeps the brain actively engaged. This is why a MorningStar Assisted Living Community near you advocates for book clubs in their assisted living communities. For seniors in assisted living that may have physical limitations or reduced mobility, reading provides a mentally engaging and fulfilling activity, especially in a group setting. Building community over a good book is a great way to keep seniors actively engaged and mentally stimulated in assisted living care.

Reading opens the door to continuous learning and personal growth. Through reading, seniors explore new topics and expand their horizons. Offering access to books through libraries and digital reading platforms is just one way assisted living communities grant seniors this wealth of knowledge. By encouraging and facilitating book clubs, MorningStar empowers seniors to continue their literary journey and make lasting, lifelong friends along the way.

By organizing and promoting book clubs in our community, residents come together to discuss and share their chosen books and love for reading. This group gives seniors something to look forward to and keeps their minds busy and engaged. For seniors that struggle with mobility and may be unable to participate fully in outdoor activities, book club provides a safe alternative to physical pursuits while still allowing residents to remain mentally active and entertained.

Engaging in regular reading has been shown to have positive effects on memory and recognition. Knowing this, MorningStar encourages seniors to maintain and improve their memory function through reading. With memory care being a priority for some residents in assisted living, joining a book club will help to reduce stress, improve memory, and benefit overall happiness.

Receive the Care You Need at MorningStar at Mountain Shadows

July 19, 2023 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Does your elderly mom or dad dismiss the idea of assisted living fearing it would end their independence and life as they know it? Do they think assisted living homes are more like nursing homes of the past? We want to reassure you and your senior loved one that assisted living communities such as MorningStar at Mountain Shadows are not nursing homes. In fact, we do not offer skilled nursing services but rather provide assistance with the ADLs (activities of daily living), along with engaging activities and other services intended to improve and enhance quality of life.

It is important to a senior’s overall health that they receive proper care as the website Aging.com reports, “Functional status and the ability to care for oneself have a significant impact on a senior's quality of life. Unmet needs for help with activities of daily living can lead to malnutrition, poor personal hygiene, isolation, illnesses like urinary tract infections (UTIs), and falls.” In fact, studies show seniors getting assistance with the ADLs allows them to feel like they are in control of their life again and helps them regain a sense of self-worth and purpose.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, we know seniors have a lot to offer and the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless. We act upon this truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. Our beautiful community offers 45 graciously appointed suites for assisted living in a variety of floorplans. In addition, the Reflections Neighborhood provides 19 secure suites devoted to the individualized care of residents with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.

We also offer respite care for those recovering from surgery or an illness, as well as short-term stays from one week up to a full month to see if we are a good fit. For trusted memory care or assisted living Colorado Springs seniors and their families can count on, visit our website or contact us for further information.

Since 2003, MorningStar has considered it a privilege and responsibility to “cast a new light” on senior living, inspired and empowered by our unique mission: to honor, to value, to invest. Our passionate commitment to serving seniors has proudly earned us a reputation for family satisfaction second to none. Keeping a Loved One With Dementia Engaged in Activities They Enjoy

July 17, 2023 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

The Alzheimer’s Association explains that a person with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia shouldn’t give up the activities they love. Rather they suggest the better option is to modify the activity to better fit their skill set and current ability.

However, even in the early stages of the disease, many withdraw from the activities they used to enjoy but experts say it is important to help them stay engaged. A modification can be as simple as reducing the number of people the person socializes with at a time. Smaller groups are less intimidating and reduce confusion. Also, it helps to let the person’s other family members and friends know about the diagnosis.

As the disease progresses, other changes will likely be in order. If you notice an activity that seems to make them restless or irritable, either modify so it brings them happiness or stop it altogether. For instance, while a person’s skills may decline, someone who plays the piano may still enjoy playing the simple pieces they learned years ago.

Dementia care specialists say setting up a daily routine is important and should include the things they like to do on their own such as setting the table or folding laundry and be done when the person seems to function the best. Remember to be flexible and include a range of creative, physical, social and spiritual activities that bring meaning and enjoyment into their life.

Along with assisted living, MorningStar at Mountain Shadows offers specialized care to individuals with Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related diseases.  Our secure and loving Reflections Neighborhood can provide the care your family member needs at the onset of the disease through to the most advanced stages where the highest level of care is required.

MorningStar’s compassionate caregivers use gentle, resident-directed methods to calm and awaken memories and to support each resident’s capabilities.  Common techniques include using multi-sensory cues such as aromatherapy as well as a range of meaningful and purposeful activities that incorporate art, dance, music, exercise and life skills. Please contact us or visit our website for more information about MorningStar’s memory care in Colorado Springs.

Stretching is a Good Way to Begin Exercising

July 14, 2023 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

If you are a senior who wants to start exercising again, you may not know how to begin.  For one thing, you probably realize you are not as fit as you used to be, and are not up to the same degree of physical activity that you once did.  And of course, before you begin any new form of exercise, you will need to check with your doctor to make sure you are fit enough, especially if you have osteoporosis, an injury, or balance issues.

Once you get the go ahead from your healthcare provider, stretching is a good place to begin.  In fact, studies show that as we grow older our flexibility decreases by up to 50 percent in some joints.  Another good thing about stretching is many exercises are appropriate for any level of fitness including ones that can be done sitting in a chair.  Stretching can help you maintain your flexibility and mobility as well as loosen up some of your stiffness in your back, neck and shoulder muscles.

Another plus about stretching exercises is that most of them do not require special equipment and can be done anywhere.  The Silver Sneakers website recommends that as you stretch, “to breathe deeply, and go slowly. Listen to your body, and never force a movement that causes pain.”  They remind seniors it is okay if they cannot bend very far as over time they will loosen up some.  Safety is always important and you do not want to hurt yourself.  Other exercises especially good for seniors include chair yoga, resistance band workouts, walking, and dumbbell strength training.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, our beautiful community offers a whole host of amenities and care services as well as wellness programs that include exercises geared toward our residents.  Beautifully situated at the foot of the Rockies, we are convenient to medical facilities, shopping, and restaurants as well as other services.  Contact us to learn what sets us apart from other assisted living communities and why MorningStar is a great place to call home.

Gardening is Both Fun and Healthy

July 10, 2023 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Research has shown gardening to be an effective low-impact exercise for seniors. Along with providing a moderate amount of exercise for aging adults, gardening can offer benefits to your mental and emotional health. To keep it accessible to the elderly for whom lifting and bending can be difficult; it is smart to incorporate a few modifications such as raised garden beds as well as using various ergonomic tools.

One of the best things about gardening is it stimulates all of the senses and offers an excellent excuse to get outside and soak up some vitamin D as well as boost serotonin levels in your brain. Serotonin is a chemical that improves your mood and helps you to feel calm and centered. In addition to relieving stress and anxiety, gardening gives seniors a sense of purpose and accomplishment with its beautiful or edible finished product. It also is an enjoyable way to use all of your motor skills and improve endurance and strength.

Working in a garden has also proven helpful to those with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. Gardening can help recall pleasant memories from the past and remind a person of healthier times. Experts advise not to give someone with dementia a sharp tool.

If seniors plan to get out and garden, they need to protect themselves against pests and the elements. It is recommended that seniors avoid the heat of the day and apply plenty of sunblock and wear protective clothing including sunglasses and a hat. They should have shady areas available with benches or chairs so they may easily take a break as needed. It is also important to remember to drink plenty of fluids as dehydration can be a problem.

Among our many amenities and activities at MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, we offer residents the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors through a fireside patio and strolling paths as well as resident garden beds. Please visit our website to learn more about exceptional assisted living in Colorado Springs.

Since 2003, MorningStar has considered it a privilege and responsibility to “cast a new light” on senior living, inspired and empowered by our unique mission: to honor, to value, to invest. Enhancing Brain Function and Well-being in MorningStar’s Assisted Living Facilities

June 21, 2023 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Among the many activities that can help seniors maintain and improve brain function, senior workbooks, puzzles, and board games have proven to be highly beneficial for seniors. At MorningStar Jordan Creek in Des Moines, Iowa, we understand the importance of incorporating engaging activities in assisted living that promote brain function and overall well-being for our residents. These activities contribute to a sense of purpose, achievement, and emotional well-being. In our vibrant assisted living community, you will discover the benefits of these engaging activities that support seniors' cognitive health and happiness.

Engaging in activities such as senior workbooks, puzzles, and board games can significantly contribute to maintaining and improving brain function for seniors in assisted living. These activities challenge cognitive abilities and can improve memory, problem-solving, critical thinking, and concentration. By regularly participating in mentally stimulating activities, seniors struggling with memory loss can enhance their overall mental health and work to keep their minds sharp.

Senior workbooks, puzzles, and board games are particularly beneficial for memory enhancement. These activities require memory recall, pattern recognition, and information retention. For instance, puzzles and memory games can improve short-term memory and promote better recall abilities. Seniors treasure these activities in assisted living who may be experiencing mild cognitive impairment or early-stage dementia.

Engaging in enjoyable activities significantly reduces stress levels in seniors and promotes emotional well-being. Senior workbooks, puzzles, and board games provide a sense of accomplishment, relaxation, and enjoyment. They offer a break from daily routines and can serve as relaxation therapy, reducing anxiety and promoting a positive mood.

Activities like puzzles, coloring books, or board games are a great way to keep the family involved in your loved one’s life. While adjusting to assisted living, seniors often miss family members or friends. Bringing a board game, they are familiar with or bringing other craft materials is an exciting way for the whole family to help your loved one feel mentally nourished and loved.

Good Nutrition is Especially Important for Seniors

June 16, 2023 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

As people age, many find their appetites have diminished or they suffer from physical or medical conditions that make eating more difficult. Also, their metabolism slows down so they need fewer calories than before. Therefore, the nutritional value found in the foods they do consume is more important than ever.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) advise that people over the age of 50 follow the USDA food recommendations, which should help keep older adults feeling more vital, and thus healthier. They also point out the earlier you start eating a nutrient-rich diet, the more effective it will be later down the road. Recommendations include a daily diet of fruits, vegetables, grains, protein foods, and dairy. It also includes eating foods with healthy fats such as olives, nuts, and avocados.

MorningStar Assisted Living& Memory Care at Mountain Shadows is proud to offer our residents daily meals that are full of fresh ingredients from high quality producers, locally sourced when possible. Our delicious meals are prepared largely from scratch and take into account seniors’ dietary restrictions. We offer a range of choices including low sodium, sugar free, no sugar added, vegetarian and low fat that allows our residents to self-manage. MorningStar’s food service is overseen by our own Executive Chef, who welcomes resident feedback and often tailors our menus per their suggestions.

The Benefits of Assisted Living Communities

June 14, 2023 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Many times, a move to assisted living is not only good for the senior but for the family as well. Mom or dad living alone, perhaps already experiencing a fall or another type of health emergency, is stressful for everybody involved.

Senior living experts point out the benefits of receiving attentive senior care along with services like nutritional meals, access to meaningful programs and transportation to and from appointments. At communities like MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, we sit down with in-coming residents to create a Personalized Service Plan designed to help with the ADLs (activities of daily living), which include things like bathing, grooming, transferring (such as from bed to a wheelchair), feeding and toileting.

Dee Pekruhn, director of life plan communities’ services and policy for LeadingAge, the association of nonprofit providers of aging services, says, “Whether they stand alone or are part of a larger continuing care campus, assisted living communities offer a wide variety of community and social activities.” These typically include arts and crafts, physical exercise classes such as chair yoga, live concerts and other entertainment, and educational and technology classes. At MorningStar, we tell our residents if we don’t already have a class addressing one of your interests, to start one.

Special outings and trips are another component of many assisted living communities including MorningStar at Mountain Shadows. Bus trips to local points of interest, shopping or cultural events are just some of the activities enjoyed by residents.

Another important service is medication management as statistics show the average older adult takes four or more prescription drugs each day, and as high as 39 percent of seniors take five or more. Medical management ensures seniors take the proper medication they need when they need it.

MorningStar at Mountain Shadows is proud to offer exceptional senior living in Colorado Springs with our distinct mission statement “to honor, to value, to invest.”  Our community offers 45 private assisted living suites and 19 suites in our Reflections Neighborhood devoted to caring for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. A Living Will Ensures You Get the Care You Want

June 07, 2023 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Many times people put off creating a living will, also known as a health care power of attorney, because they don’t understand how important it is to have one; or they fear they are giving up too much control over their life. The medical community explains the reason you need one is to ensure you get the type of care you want when you can no longer speak for yourself.

The Harvard Medical School says before you create a living will there are a few things to consider including separating fact from fiction. To start with, think about what quality of life means to you. Sometimes having extraordinary measures taken to save your life doesn’t factor in where such treatments will leave you. Having a living will can help guide your medical team on just such decisions.

Some people worry if they choose to refuse certain life-sustaining medical treatments to prolong life even when death is inevitable that it will invalidate their life insurance policy. Medical professionals explain there is no reason to worry as the recorded cause of death will be from the person’s underlying medication condition. Another common concern is if medical treatment is started, it can’t be stopped. This too is not true as treatment plans can always be updated and revised to address current circumstances.

Medical professionals want patients to know treatment can be started or stopped. Even if you refuse certain life sustaining treatments, it does not mean you won’t get other types of treatment such as intensive comfort care to help manage pain and symptoms.

Seniors especially should be aware a recent new directive has pretty much replaced a DNR (do not resuscitate), which only gives EMS permission to not perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). A POLST (physician orders for life-sustaining treatment) can include a DNR as well as provide more instruction regarding medical interventions such as intubation, antibiotic use and feeding tubes. Talk to your medical provider to learn more.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, we offer residents carefree retirement years with a range of hospitality and care services, luxury amenities and a complement of wellness programs and activities. In addition, our all-day dining service includes healthy, delicious meals prepared under the direction of our Executive Chef.

Situated at the foot of the Rocky Mountains and convenient to medical facilities and other services, MorningStar at Mountain Shadows offers 45 suites for assisted living in a variety of floorplans. Important Hip Fracture Prevention for Seniors

May 24, 2023 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

The risk of hip fractures becomes a growing concern for seniors and their loved ones. It’s hard to trust that your parents or loved one will be alright on their own at home or participating in routine chores or errands at an older age. At MorningStar at Jordan Creek in Des Moines, Iowa, we take proactive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of our residents with comprehensive safety measures implemented at MorningStar. From well-designed living spaces to personalized care plans and engaging physical activities, we are committed to preventing hip fractures and other injuries while creating a secure and active environment for our residents.

Falls are a common concern among family members who care for a senior parent or loved one. These accidents can have significant consequences on seniors’ health and well-being. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), falls are the leading cause of injuries and hospitalizations among older adults. MorningStar prioritizes fall prevention as a fundamental aspect of resident safety in our senior living communities.

Our community features carefully designed living spaces that prioritize safety and accessibility. We ensure proper lighting, non-slip flooring, handrails in hallways and bathrooms, and clear pathways throughout the premises. These features contribute to a secure environment, minimizing the risk of falls and subsequent hip fractures.

Personalized care plans are a simple, yet progressive way to regularly ensure that residents are receiving the care and supervision they need. MorningStar Assisted Living and Senior Living in Des Moines offers the best staff for individualized care plans. These plans are tailored to the unique needs and abilities of each resident. Our dedicated team assesses residents regularly, identifying potential fall risks and developing personalized strategies to mitigate them. By addressing specific needs, such as mobility assistance or balance exercises, we enhance resident safety and reduce the likelihood of hip fractures.

Helping Seniors Downsize for Assisted Living

May 19, 2023 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Helping seniors downsize for assisted living is a sensitive and challenging process. Through the many years, our parents and loved ones have accumulated many special items that have sentimental value. If it is time to move into assisted living communities, you may be stressed and wondering how to downsize your loved one's many years of irreplaceable keepsakes. At MorningStar Senior Living in Jordan Creek, West Des Moines, Iowa, we understand the emotional and practical challenges involved in downsizing for seniors when moving to senior living or assisted living.

When you and your family begin to consider assisted living, it's important to begin the downsizing conversation as early as possible with your parents or loved ones. Initiate this discussion with empathy and take the time to understand your loved one's concerns and preferences over what they want for their items. For this reason, MorningStar does offer 56 assisted living suites that we encourage seniors to fill with their own furniture and items from home. This helps seniors to feel like they are in a familiar and comfortable environment while they are adjusting to a senior living facility. At MorningStar, our caring staff will also be available to offer guidance and support throughout this process by working to make your loved one’s stay as easy as possible.

Downsizing can be an emotional process for seniors as they may be parting with cherished possessions or leaving a home they've lived in for a long time. Begin the downsizing process by decluttering and sorting your loved one's belongings with their supervision and permission. Encourage them to focus on items they truly need, cherish, or use regularly. Categorize belongings into three groups: keep, donate/sell, and discard. It will also be helpful to take breaks regularly and to check in with your loved one to ensure that they have not become overwhelmed or anxious. Remind them that they are not uprooting their life completely, but starting a new journey with like-minded individuals that are excited to meet them and create memories.

MorningStar Assisted Living Des Moines provides high-quality care and safety assurances for seniors, making it an excellent choice for families looking for a safe and secure senior living community. With their commitment to safety, experienced staff members, and state-of-the-art safety features, you can be confident that your loved one will receive the best care possible. Do not hesitate to look into MorningStar Senior Living for your parent or loved one and experience the peace of mind that comes with knowing your loved one is in good hands.
