Assisted Living with Wellness and Fitness Options for Seniors

April 15, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Exercise is essential for seniors in retirement, as it can provide a variety of physical, mental, and emotional benefits for elders in assisted living. Regular exercise, no matter how seemingly small, can help seniors maintain their muscle strength and mobility, which can help them stay independent and active in the long run. Regular fitness also helps seniors maintain a healthy weight, reducing their risk or the impact of chronic diseases.

MorningStar’s Life Enrichment Teams plan safe and effective ways for seniors to tap into their unique talents and interests. On top of all the programs MorningStar Senior Living Des Moines has to offer, there are also the following popular assisted living wellness programs that encourage wellness and fitness for seniors in assisted living:

Healthy dining options

When seniors struggle to care for themselves, it is often their eating routine that becomes impacted first. Having healthy dining options available and easily accessible for seniors in assisted living is crucial in supporting overall wellness. Food preferences and nutrient needs change as we age, for this reason, MorningStar Assisted Living Des Moines offers plenty of healthy food options to accommodate changing needs.

Group Fitness Classes

While many seniors may at one point had a very active lifestyle, certain circumstances may have impacted their ability to work out on their own. Even if a senior struggles with decreased mobility, assisted living wellness programs in Des Moines at MorningStar can still help these residents move their bodies in a safe, but effective way. Gentle stretching like yoga, walking groups, and water aerobics are just some of the low-impact workouts for seniors in assisted living to enjoy.

Drugs are Frequently Recalled in the United States

April 15, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

We all applaud the numerous life-saving medications that help many people enjoy a higher quality of life than they may have experienced without these wonder drugs. In the US, the FDA is in charge of approving the medications that come to market in our country and ensuring they are safe and effective.

While each new prescription drug is carefully looked at by the experts at the FDA before it is granted approval, over the last ten years statistics show there were more than 14,000 drugs recalled. This adds up to an average of almost four recalls a day.

Experts say although the numbers sound alarming, in most cases, the FDA is aware of any side effects and risks the drug has before it is made available to the public. According to an article from the Harvard Medical School, there are several explanations as to why things are missed after approval, and a drug is deemed unsafe and recalled.

The most likely reason is drug clinical trials are typically done with at most a couple of thousand people. After a drug is widely used by tens of thousands, rare reactions may turn up. Secondly, clinical trial participants are generally healthy in order to produce better trial results. Once the general public is using the drug, it may not work like it did during trials. Problems can also crop up because people are using other medications as well.

Other complications resulting in a drug being recalled include poor manufacturing processes including bacterial contamination or problems with mislabeling and storage. In some cases, incidences of recalls are due to manufacturers adding additional drugs that were never in the original medication.

Thankfully most recalls are not life-threatening or dangerous to the user. Only 6 percent of recalls are Class I. This is where the drug is deemed dangerous and poses a serious health risk. The majority of recalls fall into the Class II category where a drug may present a less serious health risk or a temporary one. Many times it is a matter of a drug being improperly stored such as a too hot location.

To safeguard yourself, you can sign up for texts or emails from the FDA regarding safety alerts and recalls on drugs. Additionally, pharmacists advise patients to carefully examine their new prescription for the correct color and broken or crumbling pills. Contact your healthcare provider if you have any concerns regarding your medications.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, our well-designed suites come in a range of floor plans including studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom configurations.  Amenities include chef-inspired meals, restaurant-style dining, fitness room, salon, theater, fireside patio and more. What Should You Consider When Looking for Assisted Living for a Parent or Loved one?

April 12, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

It is not easy when it’s time to consider new living arrangements for your parent or loved one. Chances are you have thoroughly thought through the decision that assisted living will be the best arrangement for them. With so many assisted living options, it can be hard to know which assisted living community may be right for your family’s needs. While every senior is different, below are some of the most common things you should look for when looking for an assisted living community for seniors.

Independence and Autonomy

Seniors, like any adult, want to maintain their independence and autonomy, even if they struggle with completing some activities of daily living (ADL’s). While it is crucial to ensure their future assisted living home provides the necessary support and supervision for optimal senior living care, residents should still feel they have the independence to live out their retirement doing the things they want and enjoy. Staff should be present to support residents and provide care when necessary. No senior wants to feel controlled or lose their autonomy while in an unfamiliar home.

Access to Healthcare Services

Many assisted living communities are not affiliated with hospitals or medical providers. However, most senior living communities that offer assisted living will have registered nurses available. While some assisted living homes may not have doctors, seniors really value senior living that coordinates health care needs with providers. Assisted living that actively works with doctors and health care professionals ensures that seniors will receive regular health assessments, proper medication management, and other health care services.

Dealing With Age-Related Forgetfulness

April 12, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

The National Institute on Aging (NIA) reminds older adults mild forgetfulness is more often a normal part of aging and not a serious memory problem. They explain serious problems generally involving things like the person asking the same question over and over again and getting lost in places they know well. They may also have trouble following recipes or directions and find themselves confused about people, places and time.

If you are someone who is forgetting things, there are some steps you can take to feel more confident. These involve several simple things you can do, which will benefit your whole being like getting enough sleep (seven to eight hours a night), not drinking a lot of alcohol; and exercising and eating well. Managing high blood pressure is also important.

Other more practical tips to help with forgetfulness are putting your wallet or purse, keys, glasses and phone in the same place each day. Instead of assuming you will remember, write out shopping and need to-do lists and use a calendar or take notes. NIA says to get involved in activities that focus on using the mind and body and stay socially involved. If you feel depressed for weeks at a time, talk to your doctor.

Strategies to improve forgetfulness include challenging our brains by learning new things as well as using all our senses. For example, prepare a new recipe that requires lots of spices. If you are eating out, try to identify the flavors and seasonings used in the meal. To help remember new information better such as names, places, etc., try repeating it out loud or writing it down as this reinforces the memory. For example, if you want to remember a new neighbor’s name, say it out loud back to them, like “hi Jack.” Then an hour or so later say the new neighbor’s name out loud again.

At MorningStar Mountain Shadows we promote a healthy, engaged lifestyle, while providing comfort and security. Our beautiful home has 45 well-designed assisted living suites with a choice of floor plans. In addition, 19 secure suites in our Reflections Neighborhood are devoted to caring for those with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.  Please contact us or visit our website for more information about outstanding senior living in Colorado Springs.

Eat a Protein-Rich Breakfast

April 08, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

How many times have you eaten breakfast, and after an hour or two, you start to feel hungry? Many breakfast options involve foods such as cereals, breads and granola bars that are high in refined grains and sugar. To solve the problem, nutritionists say you should add protein to every meal including your breakfast.

When you eat a breakfast with protein, you feel fuller for a longer period and less apt to reach for high-calorie snacks mid-day. Registered dietician, Lisa Jones, explains an adult’s daily intake of protein should be between 10% and 35% of the calories consumed. She adds, “For example, if your nutritional needs call for 2,000 calories daily, you should get 200 to 700 calories from protein, or 50 to 175 grams.”

One suggestion for an easy-to-do, protein-rich breakfast is avocado and fried egg on a bagel or enriched whole-grain slice of toast. Omelets are also fairly easy and can be assembled with a variety of fillings such as mushrooms, spinach and bacon. You can increase the protein in a bowl of oatmeal by adding a scoop of protein powder and topping it with almond milk and berries. Try other creative options such as smoked salmon on a toasted whole wheat English muffin spread with cream cheese, or a Greek yogurt parfait layered with granola, nuts, and fruit.  Nutritionists say another incentive for eating protein in the morning is it may help you lose weight as you feel more satisfied for a longer period.

MorningStar at Mountain Shadows is a luxury 55+ community with 45 assisted living suites for residents who need help with the activities of daily living. In addition, we have 19 suites in our Reflections Neighborhood for those suffering with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Our all-inclusive community offers a dining service under the direction of an Executive Chef, a range of floor plans to meet our residents’ varying needs, and onsite amenities and care services to provide carefree retirement years.  We are committed to providing exceptional senior living in Colorado Springs, and invite you to set up a tour to see our beautiful home.

Experience Modern Assisted Living with Gourmet Dining

April 03, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

We all know our health and our diet are greatly linked, but did you know our age can greatly impact our relationship with food? As we age, our food preferences change, our mobility may be hindered, and we might not have the same energy we once did to cook and prepare some of our favorite meals. Knowing this, modern assisted living communities have prioritized dining options in assisted living to ensure that residents have access to healthy food options and recipes that remind them of home.

How Age Impacts Our Relationship with Food

So many things that can happen throughout our lives can impact our relationship with food. This is especially true for elders who tend to experience more lifestyle changes after 55. During this stage of life, children move out and begin families of their own, spouses may pass on or deal with life-altering illnesses, retirement happens, fluctuations in health may start, and close friends moving can all impact eating routines. A single senior, or a senior with medical concerns, may no longer want to cook for themselves, making it difficult for them to achieve all the necessary nutrients and health benefits freshly prepared meals have to offer.

Have a Healthy Life in Assisted Living

Assisted living is designed with senior health in mind. At MorningStar, we are aware of the challenges seniors face in retirement. Seniors with assisted living needs can struggle to feed themselves properly, meaning they are likely missing out on the core components of a healthy diet and lifestyle.

An assisted living dining experience should be inspired by the belief that diet is the centerpiece of holistic wellness. Food is a healing medicine unlike any other. “BrainWise” is a lifestyle at MorningStar where we prioritize using ingredients known to support brain health. Superfoods, like acai berries, Omega-3 fats, dark chocolate, and dark greens, supply your brain with vitamin K, anti-inflammatory properties, and antioxidants.

How to Know When It’s Time for Assisted Living

April 01, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

If you are an adult child of an elderly parent, it may be difficult to tell when it’s time to move your parents into assisted living. For many of us, we have always seen our parents as independent individuals who kept the family together, made all the tough decisions, and could handle anything. Age, health, and other factors beyond our control can greatly impact our parents’ ability to manage retirement and aging. It can be very unsettling to begin to notice things in your parents’ home fall by the wayside.

If you are concerned that your elderly parent may need assisted living care, look out for the following behaviors:

Behavioral Changes

Changes in behavior are often the first thing we notice about our parents when they age. Getting older can generally cause some changes in communication or personality, but drastic mood shifts may hint at a larger issue at hand that may worsen over time. If your parents are acting unlike themselves, they may be experiencing early symptoms of dementia, depression, anxiety, or another health care concern. If this is the case, you will most likely want to consider assisted living arrangements that offer personalized senior care with 24-hour professional staff.

Concerns about Eating Habits and Health

It may be difficult to know your parents’ eating habits and food shopping if you do not live close by or visit regularly. However, if you have begun to notice an absence of fresh foods in the fridge, expired food in the pantry, or a lack of available food in the home, this could be a clear indication that your loved one is struggling to feed themselves. The same can be said if you notice drastic weight gain or weight loss, perhaps they are eating out more than normal or eating less than recommended. Either way, it’s worth checking in with your parent to see if they have been struggling to prepare meals and go grocery shopping.

Are You Looking for Assisted Living in Colorado Springs?

April 01, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Several studies have shown that most seniors who move into senior living communities say they prefer it to living alone.  A Place for Mom reports that “while many seniors want to age at home as long as they can, research shows that senior living communities may be the healthier option; especially after a spouse passes away.”  Also, seniors are often unaware of the wide range of services and amenities available at an independent or assisted living community.

When a senior lives alone, they can become isolated, especially if they have stopped driving.  In addition, trying to maintain a house can be difficult for aging adults.  Housekeeping chores, preparing meals, and going up and down stairs can be challenging for the elderly.  Another problem faced by seniors who live alone is the fear of falling.  Having no one around to help in the case of an emergency can be scary as well as life-threatening.

If you are looking for assisted living in Colorado Springs, we encourage you to consider MorningStar at Mountain Shadows.  Our beautiful community has 45 suites with spacious studio, one-bedroom or two-bedroom floor plans. Apartments feature a kitchenette, handicap-accessible bathrooms and emergency call systems. Weekly housekeeping and linen service is provided.

Our community offers all the services, luxury amenities, programs and activities to ensure residents a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and security.   Starting with a five-star dining service that includes meals prepared largely from scratch using the freshest ingredients, restaurant-style dining and a private dining room, we have a bistro, theatre, salon and fitness room.  Other amenities include a life enrichment room, library, fireside patio, and strolling paths as well as scheduled transportation.

MorningStar at Mountain Shadows offers the kind of senior living area families count on.  Along with assisted living, we provide memory care in our Reflections Neighborhood for those with Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related diseases. In addition, we offer respite care, (short recuperative stays) and trial stays from one week up to a full month to see if we are a good fit.  Please contact us or visit our website for more information.

MorningStar at Mountain Shadows’ mission statement of “to honor, to value, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living communities. We have built a foundation on honoring God, valuing our seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Safe and Comfortable Assisted Living Options in Des Moines

March 29, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

When looking for assisted senior living options, there are a few necessities seniors and families have in mind. To experience the finest assisted living des moines has to offer, MorningStar recommends researching senior living communities that have a high reputation for great safety and luxury-style retirement homes. MorningStar Senior Living Des Moines has implemented a range of safety protocols to keep seniors safe and comfortable while they explore the community and experience their retirement to the fullest. Keep reading to better understand how valuable a safe senior living experience is for elders needing assisted senior care in Des Moines.

Secure Retirement Homes

Seniors want to feel safe where they live, and this is especially true for seniors who may struggle with mobility, hearing difficulties, or other health concerns. It can be hard to find the right balance of assistance and independence in senior care, but MorningStar has been able to balance safety and luxury in their assisted living retirement communities. 24-hour attended desks, surveillance, non-slip flooring, grab bars in the bathrooms, emergency response systems, and much more make MorningStar Assisted Living in Des Moines safe and comfortable for all seniors while giving their families peace of mind.

Preventative Fall Measures and Safety Technology

Disorganized living situations, mobility challenges, changes in vision, and even medications can contribute to fall accidents in seniors. The constant fear of falling holds seniors back from fully enjoying their lives, and can make families even more wearisome of letting their loved one do things on their own. MorningStar Assisted Living Des Moines is designed with safety in mind. A new partnership with MorningStar and senior safety technology, SafelyYou, brings a new step in assisted living care.

SafelyYou uses artificial intelligence, or AI, to detect and prevent falls. This technology uses intelligent cameras that are placed in residents’ rooms, upon your discretion of course, and throughout the community to monitor residents’ movements. The AI technology also helps team members and caretakers identify potential fall risks before they happen, allowing them to take preventive measures to ensure the safety of their residents.

Know the Signs of Parkinson’s Disease

March 29, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

The Medical News Today says too many people do not get diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease (PD) and related neurodegenerative diseases until they are in the advanced stages; thereby limiting their prevention and treatment options. Medical professionals say although the disease has typically been categorized as primarily a movement disorder, new research finds executive function may be a major factor in determining its progression. Executive function is defined as a broad group of mental skills enabling people to complete tasks and interact with others. Disordered executive function impairs a person’s ability to organize and manage behavior.

According to the Parkinson’s Foundation the top 10 signs of the disease are:

  • Tremors

  • Small handwriting

  • Loss of smell

  • Trouble sleeping

  • Trouble moving or walking

  • Constipation

  • A soft or low voice

  • Masked face (looking depressed or mad)

  • Dizziness or fainting

  • Stooping or hunching over

If you have any of these signs, you should see your healthcare provider. He or she may refer you to a neurologist, who specializes in the brain as well as other specialists. Experts say there is not a one-size-fits-all treatment, but rather your treatment will be tailored to address your own special needs and is usually a team effort. Based on your symptoms, treatment may include seeing a physical, speech or occupational therapist; medications and exercises.

Research also suggests a strong link between those who experience what is known as “minor hallucinations” early on in the disease to a more rapid loss of executive function as well as cognitive decline in the later stages. Minor hallucinations involve the senses – sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste. These include seeing someone who is not there or seeing a face or object in something like a cloud or a carpet. It is important to let your doctor know if you are experiencing any hallucinations.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, our goal is to promote physical, intellectual, spiritual and social wellbeing. Finding a Gift for a Parent or Grandparent in an Assisted Living Community

March 25, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

It can be difficult to find the right gift for a parent or grandparent living in an assisted living community.  We recognize that they have had a lifetime of gifts, and as they are no longer running their own household, they not only do not need as much but have a limited amount of space.

One suggestion is to give them a blanket or throw as seniors often suffer from the cold.  However, if you want to personalize your gift, there are several companies that will create a cozy throw using one of your family photos.  A talking photo album also lets you create memories through family pictures and when it has recorded voices of the grandkids, it is really special.

Another idea is to give them a lap desk that allows them to easily read a book or to write a letter from the comfort of their chair.  You could add a couple of adult coloring books illustrated with things they enjoy or places they have been along with some colored pencils and markers to complete your gift.

A personalized gift basket can be filled with all kinds of things such as their favorite soaps, lotions and perfumes or colognes.  You can also fill a basket with special treats including chocolates, cookies and a small plug-in teapot and tea bags, or do one up with slippers, grippy socks, and a couple of pairs of fashionable compression socks.

Furthermore, tablets and iPads make good gifts as their touch-screen technology and large print options make them easy for seniors to use.  If your parents are not tech savvy, set up the tablet before you give it to them with their email address, facebook page and other personal items.  It may be fun to pre-load a few games that you think they would enjoy and add some photos of the family.  Add to the gift the offer to be their “tech support” if they have any problems.

MorningStar at Mountain Shadows is proud to offer exceptional senior living in Colorado Springs with our distinct mission statement “to honor, to value, to invest.”  Our community offers 45 private assisted living suites and 19 suites in our Reflections Neighborhood devoted to caring for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. The Differences Between Alzheimer’s, Senility and Dementia

March 22, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

While most of us have heard of Alzheimer’s, senility and dementia, we may still be confused wondering if they are all the same thing or different diseases. Doctors explain the terms are often used interchangeably but do have different meanings. Dementia describes a syndrome with a wide range of symptoms that impact a person’s ability to perform everyday activities independently. While not an actual disease, the symptoms include memory loss, and difficulty with thinking clearly, making decisions and in some cases, controlling emotions. Dementia can be caused by a variety of diseases or conditions.

Alzheimer’s is a neurodegenerative disease and one form of dementia accounting for 60 to 80 percent of cases. The disease was formally recognized in 1906 and named after the German physician, Aloïs Alzheimer, who first described it. Advances in medicine have found the brain can show signs of the disease years before the person experiences any symptoms.

Dementia is typically irreversible but there are some conditions that can cause symptoms of the disease. These include vitamin deficiency, underactive thyroid gland, depression or stress; and when treated, can reverse the condition. Lewy Body Dementia and Parkinson’s disease, a neurodegenerative disease, may also cause symptoms of dementia as can AIDS, Lyme disease and stroke.

Senility is another term used to describe the type of memory deterioration associated with the elderly. Experts explain there are two major types of senile dementia: “those due to generalized “atrophy” (Alzheimer’s-type dementia) and those due to vascular problems (mainly, strokes).” Symptoms of senility include a decline in cognitive abilities such as problems recalling information and thinking clearly; and Alzheimer’s is the most common form.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, we offer experienced, compassionate care for those in the early onset of Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases right through to the most advanced stages.  The Reflections Neighborhood at MorningStar is unique from many other assisted living communities as it is specifically designed to cater to the specialized needs of those suffering from memory impairment. We provide our tender residents a safe, comforting physical environment, trained caregivers, daily health monitoring, meaningful activities, wellness programs, community meals and more. Please contact us for more information about our specialized memory care in Colorado Springs.

Seniors are Often Healthier and Happier in an Assisted Living Community

March 20, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Many seniors are pleasantly surprised to discover that moving to an assisted living community is not the worst thing to happen to them.  In fact, statistics show that for many seniors it is a healthier, more agreeable alternative to living alone.  The reason some seniors are initially reluctant to make the move is that they are unaware of the significant changes that have occurred in senior living over the years especially in terms of care options and amenities.

Today’s communities like MorningStar at Mountain Shadows in Colorado Springs offer assisted living that is geared toward meeting aging adult’s physical, emotional, spiritual and wellness needs.  Also, for many seniors, assisted living offers a better choice for those who require help in their daily lives than receiving in-home care services.  This is because assisted living communities offer 24/7 care and provide the security of knowing help is not far away in the event of an emergency.

For seniors living alone, assisted living provides the opportunity for socializing whether it is with planned activities or in common areas designed to encourage relaxed interactions.  Even if you are someone who values your privacy, community living offers the benefit of private suites with the comfort of having others around.

Another reason you may want to consider assisted living is that communities such as MorningStar are designed for the mobility and safety of seniors who may not be as sturdy on their feet as they once were.   To modify your own home to accommodate physical limitations can be quite expensive.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, we also provide scheduled transportation and planned outings to a variety of places such as shopping, parks or cultural events.  Furthermore, for many seniors cooking and preparing meals is difficult and we solve that problem by providing tasty, nutritional daily meals.  Please contact us to set up a tour to determine if assisted living may be the right decision for you or your loved one.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. Contact us to learn more about the finest assisted living and memory care in Colorado Springs.

Alzheimer’s Disease Affects a Person’s Physical Abilities

March 18, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Along with changes in the person’s memory and cognitive abilities, Alzheimer’s disease affects a person’s physical abilities. Experts explain dementia symptoms can change everything from the way a person walks, talks, and how their body works. Normal body functions such as going to the bathroom, carrying on a conversation and maintaining balance become more and more difficult.

While unfortunately we do not yet know the cause of Alzheimer’s disease, doctors suspect the symptoms are caused by a buildup of harmful proteins in the brain called amyloid and tau, which create clumps called tangles and plaque. These clumps get in the way of normal brain functions and kill healthy cells.

Changes caused by Alzheimer’s disease include loss of balance and coordination, which puts a person at a higher risk of a fall. A person’s feet may shuffle or drag along as they walk. Another symptom includes weakened muscles and fatigue that makes it difficult to stand or sit upright in a chair. Trouble controlling the bladder and bowels as well as seizures and twitches are other common symptoms.

While some people experience a slower pace of the disease and live up to 20 years after a diagnosis, the average life expectancy is 4 to 8 years. The most common cause of death in a person with Alzheimer’s is pneumonia, another infection, or a heart attack.

In addition to assisted living, Colorado Springs’ MorningStar at Mountain Shadows offers compassionate, loving care to those with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Our unique approach to memory care is all-encompassing and provides an environment in which your loved one is given the support they need to make the most of each day. MorningStar's Commitment to Senior Safety: A Haven for Assisted Living Residents in Des Moines

February 21, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Falls are a serious concern for families of a senior parent or loved one. Nearly three million elders go to the hospital each year because of fall injuries. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), falls may lead to serious head or hip injuries. Almost all hip fractures are due to fall accidents. When it comes to assisted living, senior living communities must reduce potential fall risks within their buildings while still encouraging an active community and independence.

While every senior living community is different, MorningStar Assisted Living Des Moines offers senior-approved services and amenities that focus on important aspects of safety and wellness. Foundational pillars such as physical health, mental stimulation, and a happy community are all held to high importance within our assisted living facilities which are supported by our dedication to safety and security in the following ways:

Assessing Potential Fall Risks

MorningStar at Jordan Creek assesses possible fall risks in elders who consider assisted living before they move in. By continuing to evaluate residents periodically throughout their stay as their health conditions and necessities may change, we can better prepare for possible risks or accidents. Once our staff understands a resident’s health and safety risk, we take steps to help keep our seniors safe in our assisted living care by implementing changes in their rooms, listening to healthcare providers and providing more support throughout the day.

Accessible Senior Living Communities

MorningStar Assisted Living Communities Des Moines are designed with accessibility in mind for all residents. In our communities, it’s easy to get to and from your amenities and activities with access to ramps, elevators, and handrails. Mobility support is essential for seniors to feel independent, regardless of their physical limitations.

Arthritis Facts and Myths

February 16, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

In an article in Medical News Today experts discuss some of the common myths and facts regarding arthritis, a condition that causes pain and inflammation in joints. Osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are the two main types of arthritis, and a national survey found nearly half of adults 65 years and older have been diagnosed with arthritis. OA, the most common form and leading cause of disability in older adults, is the result of cartilage between the bones in a joint wearing down.

Many people believe arthritis is only a disease of the elderly but RA, while not as common as OA, typically starts in individuals as young as 20 to 40 years old. People also mistakenly think if a joint hurts, it must be arthritis. Doctors say there are several reasons a person may experience pain in and around joints including old injuries, bursitis, and tendinitis.

Another myth is you shouldn’t exercise if you have arthritis; however, studies show exercise can actually help with range of motion and strength in the joint (consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new exercise or activity). The American College of Rheumatology says, “Exercise and arthritis can and should coexist. People with arthritis who exercise regularly have less pain, more energy, improved sleep, and better day-to-day function.”

Then there is the debate on whether heat is better than ice for sore joints. The Guy’s and St Thomas’s National Health Service (NHS) Foundation Trust in the UK, explains, “Used in the right way, heat can help reduce pain and stiffness in joints and muscles. Cold application can help reduce joint inflammation and swelling.” Moreover, experts say believing arthritis is unpreventable is only partially true as there are things people can do to mitigate risk or slow down the progression such as maintaining a healthy body weight.

Pets Offer Seniors Loyal Companionship and Unconditional Love

February 14, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

Over the last decade, there have been many studies done regarding the various benefits of pets for seniors including providing loyal companionship and unconditional love. They can help keep a senior active as even if you don’t want to go for a walk, you know your dog needs one. In fact, studies show seniors with dogs are more physically active than other older adults without pets. Another thing about taking a dog out for a walk is it is a great way to meet new friends.

However, before you rush out to get a dog or cat, veterinarians caution seniors (and their well-intentioned family members), to remember some animals are better suited to the energy level and temperament of older adults. They recommend several breeds of dogs that have a good disposition and are easy to care for. One breed making the list is the French bulldog as they are known as reliable companions and good walking partners. Poodles and Schipperkes are both loyal and intelligent and easy to care for. Veterinarians say a Maltese has a reputation for being an attentive dog to its owner. For a more active senior, a Pembroke Welsh Corgi makes a loving partner.

Experts say there are some breeds of cats that typically make better companions for seniors. The Birman cat is one. It is moderately active, affectionate, gentle, and a faithful companion known for its quiet air of dignity. Russian Blue cats also make the list as they are quiet, gentle, genteel cats and make very loyal companions. Persian cats are known as very affectionate. The Ragdoll cat is another good choice as it is known for its docile, placid temperament and affectionate nature.

At MorningStar at Mountain Shadows, residents enjoy carefree retirement years as we handle the maintenance and provide onsite amenities, hospitality services and a community of friends. Amenities include chef-inspired meals, bistro, salon, fitness room, library, and other indoor and outdoor venues.    In addition, We offer a broad range of care services, wellness programs and activities designed for residents’ physical, mental, social and spiritual wellbeing. Are You Taking a Medication Associated With an Increased Risk of a Fall?

February 09, 2024 by Quinn A in Assisted Living

The Center for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) reports millions of older adults fall each year—resulting in more than 36,000 deaths. Of those falls, 3 million seniors are treated in emergency departments for fall injuries; and one out of every five falls causes an injury, such as broken bones or a head injury. With these alarming statistics, experts say it is important for seniors to know their risk for a fall including whether they are taking medications associated with an increased risk.

The first step is to talk to your doctor to see if you are taking one of these medications, as medications are a common reason for falls. Furthermore, experts say adjusting or making a change in medication is the easiest thing to do to help prevent a fall. If it is determined you are taking a medication known to cause light-headedness, dizziness, sudden drop in blood pressure, or chronically low blood pressure or hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), you and your healthcare team can regularly re-evaluate your need and dosage.

Another way to mitigate your risk for a fall is to do exercises designed to improve leg strength and balance. In addition, be sure to get an annual eye exam and update your glasses as needed. Lastly check your home for trip hazards (keep clutter out of hallways and stairways) and install grab bars and better lighting where needed.

For exceptional assisted living, Colorado Springs seniors are encouraged to consider MorningStar at Mountain Shadows. At MorningStar we know your independence is important, and our goal is to help you maintain it as much as possible. Our maintenance-free lifestyle provides a chance to begin new adventures, meet a broader community of like-minded individuals and enjoy your precious retirement years.
